Mysterious disk space use?
I was surprised to notice today that my 211 GB partition for OS X was showing only 50-some GB unused, 160 GB used, as this was all on an 80GB disk not too long ago, and was still 70-some GB just a couple of weeks ago. Thinking cache files or some such, I restarted and ran Applejack and told it to clean cache and those things... When that was done, I'm down to 148 GB used, so something worked but still.
If I tell it to list folder sizes on the partition, the top line shows the 148 GB but all the folders below only add up to about 54GB and none of those sizes look unusual (bunch of photos and music files in the main user is responsible for the majority of the 54 GB).
So that means there is around 90 GB os something somewhere that is I guess invisible files? Surely I don't really need that? Or if I do I'd better start saving for a vastly bigger disk - or at the rate this is growing my own Amazon cloud?
Anyone have hints on what's happening? or tools I can use to deal with it? This is a Core 2 Duo MacBook running 10.6.2, with very very specialized add-ons. Haven't really changed anything in a while, so I don't see attributing this to any install.
Applejack did have some options to do cache cleanup for specific user, but I didn't understand that and couldn't figure out how to select one.
Thanks!
see this page on how to locate missing space.

most likely you have a phantom hard drive in /volumes
there are also tools like Whatsiz, Disk Inventory X and Omni Disk Sweeper which will show what's taking all the space but try the above page first. those other 3rd party tools often don't look in /Volumes.

How Can I Get the Amount of Free Disk Space using windows 7 please share example using GetDiskSpace i have already studied http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9958B8E473C4EF1786256BBC0053B64F
Reading your question a bit more in detail, I doubt whether you are using Win32 API GetDiskFreeSpace function (for which my previous post is the solution) of Programmer's Toolbox GetDiskSpace function.
With reference to the second one, it works even with disks larger than 2GB but you need to use the proper formatting code to display the returned value. I updated my example to show total free space in the debug output window and added a comparison with 3GB value using UInt64TypeCompareUInt from the Programmer's Toolbox. -
Twice as much disk space used on external HD for TM than internal HD
Disk Utility shows the amount of disk space used by TM as 86 GB whereas the HD only shows 45 GB used. Also, the number of files and folders have nearly doubled in size. This from only two days of using TM.
My Seagate FreeAgent Go External Hard Drive for Mac - 500GB, USB 2.0, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 external hard drive has been partitioned into two segments, one for TM, the other for SuperDuper.larry lund wrote:

Since TM keeps previous version of things you've changed or deleted, in addition to everything currently on your system, yes, it will use more space.
But to be twice the size in two days is clearly not right. Chris is probably correct, that TM has been backing-up the SuperDuper "clone" as well. If so, you can delete the backups of it -- see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that's not the case, see #9 there for a way to find out what's taking up so much space. If you find things being backed-up that you don't recognize, post back with the name(s) and location(s); somebody here will likely know what they are. -
Disk space used much larger than actual files
I noticed this morning that Terminal was giving a warning about running out of swap space, which I thought was odd, as /var/vm was only at around ~10GB, but later when I tried to install some updates, I noticed that it said I only had 1.8MB free on my hard drive. I ran a df -h and it showed %iused at 100%. I immediately deleted some logs to free up a few megabytes of space and started hunting for what could have been hogging all my disk space, I seem to remember having 60GB free last time I checked. I was deleting a few small files, when I noticed this
bash-4.2# du -h -d 1
6.2M ./.DocumentRevisions-V100
584K ./.fseventsd
583M ./.Spotlight-V100
0B ./.Trashes
31G ./Applications
2.1M ./bin
20K ./cache
3.8G ./data
5.0K ./dev
34M ./Developer
1.3M ./EFI
1.0K ./home
8.9G ./Library
1.0K ./net
0B ./Network

1.5M ./sbin
0B ./Shared Items
4.1G ./System
52G ./Users
4.9G ./usr
4.0K ./Volumes
117G
So apparently, according to du, I am only using 117GB of my hard drive. I immediately ran this
bash-4.2# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk1 297Gi 283Gi 14Gi 96% 74220526 3630455 95% /
devfs 200Ki 200Ki 0Bi 100% 692 0 100% /dev
map -hosts 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% 0 0 100% /net
map auto_home 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% 0 0 100% /home
So my question is how is it that all of my files combined are using 117GB, including swap, but according to df, Disk Utility and Finder I am using 283GB? I am using FileVault 2, if that helps
Here's some more data

The other Internal hard drive is the core storage physical volume, already mounted, mounted in the image. Recovery HD is the 650MB system recovery partition.
I rebooted to the recovery partition and used Disk Utility to verify the volume, it said everything checked out alright.
In disk utility, the top entry has this data

Disk Status : Online Used : 319.2 GB (319,196,397,568 Bytes)
However the other entry, right below it has this
Mount Point : / Capacity : 318.88 GB (318,877,626,368 Bytes)
Format : Encrypted Logical Partition Available : 202.18 GB (202,175,160,320 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes Used : 116.7 GB (116,702,466,048 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 241,519 Number of Files : 1,246,454
So I guess the reboot fixed my problem, df -h now shows 37% used, but the logical vomume group still shows only 16MB free. Anyways, things seem to be working now. -
New mac mini, why so much hard disk space used
Hi All
Just bought a new Mac Mini, 1.4 with the 80gb disk,
After powering up and setting up etc, i noticed that over 10gb of the 80gb hard disk was already used out of the box!!!
How come all that disk space is used, im sure the OS doesnt need that amount of room? I have found a folder of about 1.2gb with a load of garage band samples and loops in, but where is the rest hiding???? Seems a whole waste of space to me??
Thanks
Rich
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.3) Belkin USB and Firewire Hub, Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and MouseYou have heard correctly, most Mac software, including GarageBand, can be deleted by moving the application (or whole folder if it's in one) to the Trash & emptying the Trash. Some programs may install some support files, but usually not until they are run for the first time. Those few programs that do scatter bits around (can you say Microsoft?) should come with an uninstaller.
There are freeware/shareware programs to remove unneeded language files. DeLocalizer & Monolingual come to mind.
But, since you are setting this Mac mini up from scratch, you might want to do what I do with a new Mac. I erase & reinstall the OS & bundled software from the CD/DVDs that come with it, doing a custom install of both so that I get only what I want. For me, this was important because I don't need any additional printer drivers & I already had full versions of Office & iWork to install.

Monitor disk space using alerts
I need to receive an email when a disk space on a given drive (which has SQL DB files) falls below 3 GB:
- I need to use alerts (I don't want to use a SQL job to run some SP every x mins).
- SQL Server performance condition alert cannot be used, because SQL cannot access non-SQL performance counters
- if you use WMI event alert, please provide a query
- registry cannot be modified (I know what you were thinking)
Seems like a rather common DBA need, and I can't find a solution. Thanks in advance.Try this SQL Server alert .You need to use database mail and then the operator to send the mail ..Modify it as I have kept the > 800 value and you need to use < sign ...

Issue while finding disk space using df -k . , df -g . & statvfs API
Hi,
To find disk space:
If I use df -k . command to find available space, it gives
6927549 available space
Where as if I use df -g . command it gives
13855098 avaliable space which is exactly double of above (6927549 * 2) available space.
Also, I have used statvfs API to get free disk space and it is giving as,
f_bavail= 6927493 ----- which is equivalent to df -k . command's disk space.
f_bsize = 8192
f_frsize= 1024
f_blocks= 140918146
f_bfree= 8336674
f_files= 16959488
f_ffree= 16325903
f_fsid= 8388630
f_basetype= ufs
f_flag= 4
f_namemax= 255
So, my question is why it is getting doubled when I use df -g for current file system?Because df -g reports in 512 bytes blocks not in Kilobytes.
You'll notice the man page says that specifying the -g option overrides the -k (report in Kb) option.
Unfortunately for historical reasons all the internal interfaces like statvfs report things in blocks. -
Insufficient disk space using server103linux32 on Mac OSX
I am trying to install Oracle Workshop for Weblogic 10.3 on Mac OSX using the Linux version of the application. After extracting and executing "java -jar installer.jar", the GUI installer opens and appears to run fine, but after the last dialog, I get the following error:
Insufficient disk space! The installer requires:
617MB for the BEA Home at /Users/cburleson/bea,
548MB for the product at /Users/cburleson/bea/tools/eclipse_pkgs/2.0...
867MB temporary work space at /Users/cburleson/Downloads/server103linux32
There is only 868MB available at /.
"df" command in my terminal shows that I have only used 60% capacity on my volume. I clearly have more than 868MB available. Does anybody know what the deal is or how to get around this?jlarechiga, it does not work on my snow leopard system.
tried to install using : Erwin Morales' Blog
http://blogs.oracle.com/emorales/2009/06/weblogic_over_mac_os_x.html
server103_generic.jar gives the similar error stating only 1MB free (even when you run : sudo java to start installer)

Finding disk space used by FileVault
I have my home folder encrypted with FileVault but do not know how to find the total space used by files in the folder. Get Info just returns that it is a sparse image. Yet, I can do a get info on my backup copy of my home folder (done by a file by file copy to another disk) and see the total space used. Also, I can't drill down one level and then select all the folders together because when I do that I get an info window for every folder at that level. Incidentally, this particular behavior has always been a bugbear of mine - is there any way of changing it to just get one get info window, in the same way that you would with Explorer on a Windows system.
I have the exact same question.
Why is it copying all the files into another directory and then uploading to Photostream?
Can I just delete this directory and keep my Photostream OK?
It's sucking my SSD dry for no good reason. Why do I need several copies of my photos on my computer? What is the point of the cloud?
Someone chime in! I've been underwhelmed completely w iCloud, and now I'm thinking its worth that worthless, as it's needlessly duplicating stuff on my HD and taking up space.
Thanks! -
Allocating Disk Space using capture now.
FCE seems to freeze up with a messege that says "Allocating Disk Space" when using capture now.
If you have an anti-virus app running disable it.
Check FCE>System Settings>Scratch Discs. Make sure the Limit Capture Now has a value entered and the box is ticked. Default is 30 mins, it can be changed to suit the capture.
If you find a huge file with nothing in it this a probably a result of not having a value set. Delete it and start over.
When no value is set, FCE does not know how much drive space to allocate, so it grabs everything it can get it's hands on. That's why you can get that huge useless file.

Zones - reducing disk space used
We're currently looking at zones to consolidate our license servers, since fault management tends to be easier/faster when the license server is running in its own zone.
However, as of right now the "sparse" root model configuration requires 578M of space - 495M taken by packages. Having several of zones using the same size like this would eat up disk space quickly.
Ideally, I'd like the zones to be exactly like the global zone with a few changes under /etc
Does anyone know a way to reduce or eliminate the number of packages needed to be installed, or other ways I might cut down disk usage further?We're trying to figure out how to speed up patching as well -- it seems silly how long it takes to effectively just update the /var/sadm structures for a sparse zone...
One note though: to reduce space consumed in /var/sadm in a very safe way, you can delete the "obsolete*" files -- these are the backout information from patches that have been superseded at least once, so the only risk is that you will only be able to back out a single "layer" of patching. You can remove the "undo" files as well, but then you cannot backout the related patches.
Infodoc 14295 has a nice overview of what the files in /var/sadm are for those interested. -
Lack of disk space using "Capture Now"
aright here's the situaton.. evry time i capture footage using "Capture Now" it captures it for a while and then just stops and a window pops up saying: capturing ended due to lack of disk space.
How can i fix this?I'm thinking it might be closer to...
1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
Good luck,

My time machine backups are working great.
I have just noticed that my Mac HD has used 105GB of space but my external drive, using time machine, has used 168GB. Why the difference? Is this normal? Thanks.runningman5 wrote:

That is perfectly normal. TM does not just have your current HD data, but also everything you have erased and/or changed over the time you have been running it. You can recover a file that you deleted months ago because it's still on the TM drive; hence the larger file volume. -
Mysterious extra space used in Finder folder...
I have a large AVCHD folder from a Canon camcorder. I've copied the entire folder to two external hard drives. One is an OWC Mercury Elite, the other a Western Digital My Book drive. You have to copy the entire file, with all of the structure of its sub-folders, so that you can access the files later.
The file is titled "Private" (the title the Canon camcorder gave it). When I copy footage from the camcorder over to my hard drives, I always create a new folder that I put it in. So the "Private" folder, with all of its subfolders, is the only thing in the parent folder I create.
For some unknown reason, if I click "Get Info" on the parent folder I created on each drive, they are slightly different sizes. One is about 6 KB larger than the other, though they both list the same number of items (44). The folder is about 13 GB, so this is a very small difference.
If I click the "Private" folder itself that I copied over (instead of the parent folder I put it in), the sizes are exactly the same. Why would this be? There is nothing in both parent folders but the same "Private" folder from my camera. So why would they be different sizes? What are those extra KB being used for?
I've checked, and the contents of the "Private" folder on both hard drives both seem fine (I can import them into iMovie). But it still concerns me because I don't want to find out later, after I erase the contents of the camera's flash drive, that the files are somehow corrupt.
(Note: I copy files like this over to both hard drives all the time, and I don't think this has ever happened before. The parent folders I put the Private folders in are always exactly the same size.)You can also put things into List view, then go to Show View Options (Command-J) and tell Finder to display the Size column and to calculate sizes. Depending on your computer, how much stuff you have, and where you are, this can take a little or a lot of time. But as far as I'm concerned by far the best option is to get the free contextual menu item CalculateSize. Here's a review of it plus the download if you are interested:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/mac/CalculateSizeCM-Review-13041.shtml
I really like it.
