Mysterious folders showing up in /var/spool/imap

I recently noticed some new folders in /var/spool/imap that were not added or generated by any means I know of. I first noticed them in my IMAP account which now has a folder called "Shared Folder" and these new weird sub-folders (e.g. ".-verlendens" — In the file-system they show up as "^_-verlendens").
That folder-name is not any user account on the server, either. I also found mention of the same name in the SPAM logs:

Any ideas how they were created? Or how to get rid of them safely? Would a simple rm -r do without breaking cyrus/IMAP?

/var/spool/imap and Time Machine

Hi,
after upgrading my G4 Mini from 10.5 Server to 10.5.1 Server, the machine didn't boot any more.
When trying to restore from my Time Machine volume, I figured out that /var/spool/imap is not being backuped up by Time Machine.
I double checked on another 10.5 server, same thing here.
Any ideas to make Time Machine also copy /var/spool?
Since /var/imap is on Time Machine - the db files in that directory do not contain eMail bodies, right?
Thanks for any help - I don't want to lose my 5 year email archive...

Before anyone gets interested in reinstalling with Standard mode just to get recoverable Time Machine backups, I should point out that this SBSBackup has some "interesting" side effects. Because Time Machine runs hourly and the SBSBackup stops services, occasionally it's noticeable that something isn't running. Clients running Mail will frequently get the grey lightning bolt when they go to check mail and the service is down during the backup. Also, I think one of the times my server was corrupted was when the machine was rebooted while a /.ServerBackups was being created just before a backup. After I rebooted, some configuration files were missing and I suspect that the boot process checked this directory to automatically do restores of certain services then failed halfway through.
To summarize, anyone using Advanced mode will have to rely on something other than Time Machine for full system backups.

Manually moving contents of account from var/spool/imap

We rebuilt a mail server recently and although we asked all users to download their mail, two users did NOT. Now they are complaining that they missed a day of mail. We made a backup of the server prior to the rebuild so we have the contents of the accounts. I've been able to open the users folder and examine the contents which show the E-mail is there.
My questions is: How can we move the 2 users contents from the backup into the new accounts?

Since their mail has not been moved at all, there is not much risk trying:
-Stop mail services
-If they have any mail on the new server, make a backup of it.
-Copy the contents of those 2 users' folders from the backup to the server. (If there are existing files, make sure you do not overwrite them with files having the same name/number
-Download and install mailbfr from here http://osx.topicdesk.com/downloads/
-Issue mailbfr -o (fix permissions)
-Issue maibfr -m username (reconstructs mailbox of username)
-Start mail services
With a little luck you are up and running. There is however a chance of this not working (many factors like slight changes in configuration when rebuilding your server, etc.) Also your users will probably have to resubscribe to their IMAP folders.

/var/spool/imap not backed up with Time Machine

So, here we have a *very annoying* issue, of which I read in many places: Time Machine *is not* a backup solution for Apple Servers
Thus, I'd like to ask for some suggestions on:
1) which software solution is better to adopt?
2) how to backup critical services running on my server (IMAP, OpenDirectory, DNS, DHCP, etc.)?
I need to step away, FAR AWAY, from Time Machine backups!

I use BRU (tolisgroup.com) and run the backups of my users files and changed system files (ldap and OD files) to a desktop 1TB firewire drive. I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to make complete bootable copies of the system drive onto a portable carrier 320G (my user directories are on a 4TB ISCI Drobo Pro).
There are a couple of other similar backup systems similar to BRU, but you are going to want something designed for a server. If you pay, the cost will be north of $100.00

Error /var/spool/cups incorrect permissions

Does anyone know how to fix this error I get when printing
The file `/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/012c5512ac322' can not be printed because of incorrect permissions
The print file spools and then errors and nothing prints. It is happening with my HP Laserjet 400 M401dn monochrome printer, but not any other printer.
It will print some files but not emails or PDFS
I've upgraded the printer driver and firmware, uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it. Rebooted everything.
I'd be VERY grateful for any help

Ok I finally fixed it.
I have upgraded the firmware, downloaded from the HP site
Then reset the printting system:
In System Preferences>Fax & Print, Right click or Control+click on the Printers list Sidebar, choose Reset Printing System.
if you hold option and click the "-" tab it resets the printing system.
Yeay!

I had this issue posted in September and didn't get back to it 'till today so I found it archived. I don't think I got any answers the first time around. When a post is archived, are replies archived also?
Here's the problem:
Spotlight works for me the way it’s designed to work. It finds what I’m looking for if the item is in the computer.
But what are showing up in most of my searches, are long columns of files, all with the same names, sometimes as many as forty or fifty identical items. These files have the same dates and sizes. Some are located in different folders, including Trash, but most are complete duplicates
I do occasionally save as the same document in different places, or make a duplicate/copy to put in more than one location. But I have never created more than a few duplicates. In Spolight, there are hundreds
Any suggestions?

oh and if you use a creative cloud version of Lightroom it could also be that the logon to the cloud is messed up. Logging out and logging back in from preferences in the creative cloud app will fix that. Due to the release of Lightroom CC it appears that adobe's servers have been overwhelmed a bit And many people have strange problems that are solved by logging out and back in.

No folders showing in Mail?

Hi guys,
The title pretty much sums this post up – I'm using Mail on my laptop and it syncs (and works) on my iPhone 3GS. Problem is the folders I have set up don't show. I've just set up my work email on it and that also works with folders showing and that is a Kerio mail server set up through Exchange!
Any thoughts?

I may have misunderstood what the original poster was trying to achieve but...
As I said, I have several folders (mailboxes) set up in Mail for keeping things organised and all of these sync with both mobile me and my iPhone.
When you create a new mailbox you're given the option of it being on the mobile me 'cloud' or on your Mac.
Mailboxes on the Mac will not sync with mobile me but, obviously, those on the cloud will and appear on both the mobile me web site and the iPhone.
If you have mailboxes on your Mac that you want to sync with other devices just create a new one on the 'cloud', move the contents of your Mac folder into the new one and use the new one in future.
I think that's what the original post was trying to accomplish.

Printer: can't create PDFDocumentRef for `/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/'

Just moved from Tiger to leopard 10.5.2
Using an Hp deskjet 3650 which worked last week in Tiger. Now, no matter what I try to print, I get errors like the following:
can't create PDFDocumentRef for `/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/480cbc6235144'
To the best of my knowledge, I installed every possible printer driver from the DVD

tried same print and get same failure:

How to fix the "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop" error?

I keep getting the following message in my console:
com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master): Failed to count the number of files in "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop": No such file or directory
I searched but could not find the solution and the only one that had a solution can't be replied to anymore, and unfortunately that solution didn't work for me.
Anyone have any suggestions?

"Make sure Server Admin is not running.
Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf and change:
smtpdclientrestrictions = permit_mynetworks zen.spamhaus.org permit
to:
smtpdclientrestrictions = permit_mynetworks rejectrblclient zen.spamhaus.org permit
When done issue:
sudo postfix reload"

Mysterious folio showing up in app library

we cannot figure out what is happening here. We're getting a mysterious folio showing up in our app's library. It doesn't show up in our Folio Producer as a publication but it's showing up in our apps library as an available download. But there is nothing to download. Any ideas on what's happening?

As you can see, News Updates does not appear in the Folio Producer. I have no idea where its coming from.

Hey Bob. Yeah, I tried that. It just comes back. I even deleted the app entirely and reinstalled it. Same thing.
I logged in through the Adobe Content Viewer and it even shows up there. I don’t understand where it’s coming from.
I rebuilt the viewer and need to send the updated binary to Apple for approval but I’m afraid this phantom folio is going to cause them to reject it.

I´m using hp photosmart c309c under Mac OS 10.5 via wifi-network. Till yesterday everthing went correct. From today I get a message:

Try restarting your Mac, then reseting the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

"/var/spool/postfix/maildrop" Missing After Time Machine Restore

Hello,
After performing a full restore via Time Machine, the following error message appears constantly in my console:
3/8/08 9:48:00 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master) Failed to count the number of files in "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop": No such file or directory
After performing a Google search and reading the Apple discussions, it appears that Time Machine excludes the /postfix/maildrop directory from its backups. While this seems to be the problem, I can't find a solution as to how to fix it. I suppose I could create the directory but I don;t want to do this before I am certain as to what its purpose is.
Any help or point in the right direction will be appreciated.

THE FIX:
Open terminal make sure you are at root directory and type:
sudo mkdir /var/spool/postfix [enter]
<password> [enter]
postfix stop [enter]
postfix start [enter]
The postfix folder is created and the directories are rebuilt.
This seemed to work for me. Be sure to read the original post for more information.

The folder 'private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss' is referenced quite a bit on Google regarding a common privileges warning that occurs for many people. Yet nothing that touches on what the files in this folder do.
What is the function of this RSS folder in OSX?

My final question has been asked dozens of times, yet I've yet to find an answer that satisfies my curiosity.
The common permissions error:
"Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
occurs for many. The popular opinion is that this is harmless and should be ignored. Fine, yet I'm still wondering why and how it happens so much.
The change from drwxr-xr-x to drwxrwxr-x reflects a group write privilege that does not exist in it's default state.
Why and how does this happen?

Yes, but like all Solaris releases you must use the crontab command to edit them, as cron will not monitor for changes, but only re-reads when crontab signals it that you have made a change.
