Mysterious forces changing backlight brightness

Some mysterious forces are changing my laptop's brightness and I can't seem to figure it out what it is.
For example, if my battery gets below 10% (also, why 10%?), it automatically changes brightness to something very low.
Similarly, if battery gets fully charged, it changes brightness. It also happens when I plug it into the AC or remove the adapter.
I've looked everywhere, tried changing settings (I really don't remember which ones anymore), but nothing seems to work.
Also, I've xfce4-power-manager installed, but closing it doesn't seem to effect this backlight changing.
Laptop-mode-tools is also set up, but backlight control is disabled.
My only idea is that it's changed by the driver, but how can I control it?
edit:
[soz@arch ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Also, changing backlight to vendor doesn't fix this. Instead it messes up xfce4-power-manager's backlight control.
Forgot to mention, I'm running a simple Openbox installation.

Alright, an update.
The same thing happens even without running X at all. Even the brightness control keyboard hotkeys work without an X server running.
So it seems that they interact directly with hardware and it's not related to software at all. I think it's safe to say that the brightness change events happening on charger plug/unplug are related to this as well.
So if there's nothing in BIOS (I checked) I guess it's not fixable. I could set up an dirty hack using acpi handler scripts although it seems like an awful solution.
Or have you guys any other ideas?

  • I would like to force keyboard backlighting to stay on -- How?

    Hello,
I have pretty bad eyes and I would like to force keyboard backlighting to stay on--all the time, at the brightest level possible. I compute in low light conditions, but it seems that sometimes the brightness of the screen will cause backlighting to die and then it's hard to get it back on again.
I'm not a very experienced user with back-lit keyboards, but it's one of the features that I really would like to have on all the time (early a.m. and late at night).
When it decides to turn off, it seems the F8, F9 and F10 keys really have no effect...
I'm virtually always plugged in, so power is not an issue.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks, I'll look that over and maybe give it a try.
Yeah, definitely give it a spin. I downloaded it and it's pretty slick. I'll definitely be using it when I'm at work. I sit next to a TV monitor and in the afternoon, as the room darkens, the keyboard on my PowerBook goes on and off as the brightness of the TV monitor changes.
Odd that you'd have to go elsewhere to get this kind
of functionality, but I guess that's why someone's
    writing that kind of thing.
Perhaps it never occurred to Apple that someone would want to force the backlight to stay on. Or they kind of got caught up in the coolness of using the sensor to control the light, they didn't think of just bypassing it.
Sometimes the hardest things to see are also the most obvious. Back in June, I read the same article by Amit Singh that Alex says helped him, and even played around with some of the code. But until you posted your question, it didn't occur to me to put that code to practical use. I came across Alex's program because I was thinking that you had given me a good idea for a programming project and I was checking to see if anyone else had done it.

  • Satellite L855-124 can't change display brightness after Win 8 upgrade

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite L855-124 PSKACE laptop.
After upgrading to Windows 8, I can't change the brightness backlight of the laptop screen.
There seems to be an error in the graphical driver.
When I install the Windows 7 graphical AMD driver under compatibility, it works again but bugs out on other areas.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Even after using the upgrade assistant provided by Toshiba it does nothing.
Also the drivers for my laptop are poorly updated. Dating back to 2012.
I have also called tech support, they told me that a driver team will be fixing the issue.
    That was 2 months ago.
Is there anyone from Toshiba that can help me with this please?
    Thank you.

  • Satellite L850: Cannot change display brightness in Ubuntu 12.10

Screen backlight brightness doesn't change in ubuntu 12.10

    Hi Alex
Does your unit have Intel-only graphics or does it have AMD or Nvidia graphics too?
    Intel only should definitely work.
However, since Toshiba has rearranged the hotkeys, and even changed how the work along with the FN-key, you may need to experiment a bit to find the proper keys / combos.
If your unit has a non-intel video, please try a live version of a distribution with a later kernel than Ubuntu.
    Maybe Fedora or Chakra.
Both use very late kernels and drivers may be more recent, supporting more hardware.
Preferably, use a live version so you don't need to change your installed system.

  • W700ds Second Display backlight brightness

Is there any way to adjust the brightness of second display on the W700ds?
When I got the laptop I'm not sure if it was working or not, now I have the laptop for 2 weeks and I removed many apps from startup and services (when I'm not using raid I don't want the programs to be running all the time, this way I disabled lot of system tray application which were running on default)
And now I'm pressing FN + HOME and END to change backlight but the second display is working on maximum all the time.
I would be very thankful for any information about adjusting the backlight of the secondary display.

im runnin win 7 64bit with lenovo nvidia driver with the hotkeys driver installed, and i can adjust the brightness of the secondary lcd, using Fn HOME-END both brightness on the first lcd and secondary lcd changes.
im guessing your missing the hotkeys/onscreen display driver. i used the auto driver installation its called "ThinkVantage System Update"  and select the onscreen display/hotkeys or whatever its called

  • Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

I have a ThinkPad X240 which came with a 1366x768 TN panel, I hated it and so after a while I upgraded it to an IPS 1080p display. It works great and looks fantastic except it's stuck on max brightness inside of Windows 8.1. I cannot change the brightness inside of Intel HD graphics settings or inside of programs like Display Tuner. It doesn't work in Windows 10 either. The weird thing is, I can change the brightness just fine inside of Ubuntu. I've tried uninstalling the Intel HD drivers and reinstalling them, I've tried switching the drivers to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and none has worked. I feel like I've installed every single version of Intel's Graphics Drivers and that I've done everything and it still won't change the bloody brightness. NOTHING has worked except to just use Ubuntu, which is not an adequate solution. I've even gone as far as to update my BIOS and reset it to defaults, I've even pulled the CMOS battery. I've tried the version of the Intel HD driver from Lenovo for the X240 and I've installed the monitor.ini files. I've also just learned that during the Windows Boot Logo, the FN keys WILL change the brightness, but as soon as Windows is done booting, it stops working. This, coupled with the fact that brightness control works in Ubuntu means that this must be something related to Windows right? Brightness control works in BIOS. I've even gone so far as to try and change the brightness through CMD using powercfg according to this post. http://superuser.com/questions/472081/can-i-force-a-greater-screen-brightness-from-windows-command-prompt I'm really starting to lose patience now as it has been like this for 3 weeks and I can't be using Ubuntu all of the time, I honestly do not know what to do, it seems like this problem is completely unsolvable. Edit: I even got so frustrated that I switched off the laptop, installed the old screen, booted up Windows, and the brightness worked. Then (I know this is a bad idea) WHILE IT WAS ON, I pulled the old display and put connected the new one. And lo and behold, the brightness **bleep**ING worked in windows on the new display.

  • Zen Xtra Backlighting Brightness Prob

The backlighting on my new Zen Xtra seems to be woefully dark. I have changed the contrast again and again, but it does nothing to brighten up the screen. It does adjust the contrast between the background and the text, but the lighting itself is very dim. I have gone page by page in the cd manual and there is nothing that addresses backlighting brightness.
Is there something I am missing? Or is the screen very dark for everyone?

Well, it's not as bright as an iPod's screen, for example.
I searched around for some pics about what it should look like (since I don't have access to a digital cam to photograph mine)
http://www.dui'verman.nl/upload/images/28_ZenXtraAndTravelSound_0lowres.jpg Looks about right to me<
http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/images...-Zen-Xtra_.jpg Should normally appear this when in a moderately dark area<

  • Backlight brightness acting strange after 10.5.3 update...

After I upgraded my MBP to 10.5.3 the backlight brightness has been acting very strange, is like it has its own life and change the brightness when ever it feels like. Its very annoying from have full brightness and then all of a sudden it reduces to half.
Anyone got any idea what could be the problem? I've tried without the "automatically adjust brightness as ambivalent light changes but its no good.
Also Safari.app is acting very slow and crashes all the time after the 10.5.3
    Thanks in advance

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.

Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro. It is stuck on the lowest level in which i can't view the screen without a flash light. Please i need help how to solve this. The screen on my macbook has malfunction. When I change the brightness to zero and return to the first level of brightness it works briefly but then the screen starts to flicker brightness and quickly extinguished. It seems to be a bad contact, it would not be normal for a quality product that should have, he has less than two years of use. Not because of the bad use or crash. Someone with the same problem or can help me? It's really a contact problem? I've done all the procedures recommended by the online support. Thanks.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Laptop won't let me play any video or change the brightness of the screen at all.

I got this new Laptop a few months ago and it has just recently started to play up slightly and not let me change my brightness settings at all and now it won't let me play any videos.

    I got a solution
First check out your performance settings and if u dont know where to find it just right click on my computer and enter to propreties then click on performance and tools, then if the gamming and desktop aero system are 1.0 then you have three solutions.
    1) Install a new windows
    2) check out your computer driver and install tge latest version
    3) or simply you can download DRIVER PAC SOLUTION and install it then after installation is done you might wanna restart the system and check performance again then it should desplay NEW HARDWARE DETECT REFRESH NOW then click on refreah and the rating is gonna go up from1.0.to higher than 4.0.

  • My iPhone 4 has recently started to flicker. I've changed the brightness settings and for a short period of time it was back to normal, but now it is much worse! What am I to do?

Three days ago I was trying to take a picture, but I couldn't see what I was taking because of the flickering white lines that covered the screen. But when I looked at the image after taking it, it was perfectly fine. So I knew it wasn't the camera playing up. The next day my phone wouldn't allow me to view images without the lines appearing. The following day I changed my brightness settings, and it went back to normal. But now it is much worse. No matter what I try to do the flickering lines are all over the screen! I don't know what to do. I would appreciate any help, thank you!
These images don't really show the extent of the flickering, but it may give you an idea

I'm not a fan of DFU mode because I've never seen it recommended by Apple.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • [SOLVED] Broken backlight brightness adjustment on x220 after recent-

    Hi.
I'm no longer able to adjust backlight brightness with hotkeys and xbacklight.
I believe issue appeared after update to linux-3.16.
Brightness adjustment keys are detected correctly in xev.
Echoing brightness value to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness does adjust brightness.
But xbacklight and hotkeys won't do a thing.
I already tried some magic I don't understand: acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_osi=linux. No luck here.
Anyone else with the same issue? Are there any fixes for this?
    Thanks in advance.

I saw a brief mention in the arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight
that says the kernel parameter: video.use_native_backlight=1 is now default in 3.16,
so I added video.use_native_backlight=0 to my kernel parameters and my backlight functionality is back.
awesome thx, worked for me as well. I used the -u option of efibootmgr
    efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L Gentoo3.16.3-rev1 -l "\efi\boot\kernel_3.16.3-rev1.efi" -u "video.use_native_backlight=0"
