Mysterious lines and gradient when printing from Illustrator or pdf on PC and MAC

First of all I have to admit I'm not a big computer brainiac but this issue keeps on reoccurring no matter what computer I use. When creating files/layouts in Illustrator and either saving them to pdf and then printing or printing directly from Illustrator either from a PC or from Mac (I use both) the print outs come out with mysterious lines and gradient not matter what colour is used. The lines occur on solid colour prints, when gradient or transparency are not used and when they are used as well. Any ideas suggestions how to make them go away?

Monica,
Here's an image of a print out that was meant to be a solid black colour. This happens with other colours as well not just with black.

Every time Firefox opened

Go to the "File" menu, then "Print." The window that appears will have three drop-down menus at the top.
The first is labeled "Printer",
The second is "Presets".
The third is unlabeled but has "Copies & Pages" selected by default.
Click on that third menu and select "Firefox" near the bottom of the list.

• When printing from an online PDF, the page prints in extra large scale. How do I fix this?

when printing from an online PDF, the page prints in extra large scale. How do I fix this?

This can happen when Firefox has misread the paper size from the information supplied by Windows. Clearing it can involve finding some obscure settings, but here goes:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''print''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) For each setting for the problem printer, right-click and Reset it. The fastest way is to right-click with the mouse and then press the r key on the keyboard with your other hand.
Note: In a couple other threads involving Brother printers, the preference '''printer_printer_name.print_paper_data''' was set to 256 and when the user edited it to 1 that fixed the paper size problem. If you see a 256 there, you can edit the value by doubling-clicking it or using right-click>Modify.

• Lines in images when printing from anything but iphoto

When I print on my computer from anything but iphoto the quality is horrible and the print has very noticeable lines in it across everything. I recently did a layout in Adobe Illustrator and when I went to print it on regular 4x6 satin photo paper there are lines everywhere. This also happens when printing from powerpoint, photoshop, word, and whatever else that is not iphoto. I cant send out things that are printed at such horrible quality. Everything comes out fine when i print text in black but photos look pixelated and have lines in them no matter what paper I use if printed from anything but iphoto.
HELP DR.

Check the printer manual about calibrating. There is a solution in most drivers for inkjet printers which may call like paper forwarding or so. It seems, that your printer forwords the paper a bit to much before the line is printed.

• Prints too dark and contrasty when printing from IDCS3 to Canon IP4000 inkjet printer

I have a problem with colours when printing from IDCS3 onto a Canon IP4000 inkjet printer and Ilford Galarie smooth pearl paper. I cannot find a solution to it or maybe I am not looking for the right search terms. Maybe someone can help me here.
I am using IDCS3 on a Mac G5 PPC with 2Ghz dual processors running OS 10.4.11. I have an Eizo ColorEdge CE210w monitor which I profile regularly with a Gretag Macbeth eye-one device.
I have designed a 50 page document with about 200 images. Now when I print from IDCS3 the images are too dark and very contrasty. But when I print the same image from Photoshop CS3 the print is fine.
I have been using the canned ICC profile from Ilfords website.
The one difference was that in Photoshop I had a choice of rendering intent in the print dialogue which I set to relative colorimetric. (I have subsequently found that I have the choice of rendering intents in ID if I select each image and change the RI before I get to the print stage which can be a pain)
I would appreciate your help with this as I do not really want to redesign the layout in Photoshop all over again.
Thank you in advance.

You can change overall rendering intents for each document under Edit/Assign Profiles.

• Printer dialogue box hangs when printing from Illustrator cs3

OK... I'm not sure if this is Illustrator related or mac related, but it only happens from Illustrator. In our office we have an iMac (white, flat) running Tiger (OSX 10.4.11). Whenever we try to print from Illustrator CS3 the preint goes through to the printer immediately and prints, but the actual Illustrator spooling bar/printer dialogue box remains. The only way is to wait for about half an hour for the bar to finish or force quit the application and restart (even though it does not show as "not responding" in the Force Quit window.
Now I've tried reinstalling Illustrator. I've run disk warrior. Tried the fsck command on startup. our technical outsources tell us it might be a memory problem, but I'm not tsure as this only happens in Illustrator and no other programs.... any ideas?

I can vouch for the dock hiding solution solving the problem. It worked on three Intel Macs we were having problems with. Here are some links to articles about it:

• Transparency issues when printing from Illustrator CS5

I recently designed a flyer for an event that a group of artists and I are doing as a not-for-profit organization that we started, to help clean up the area and promote the arts.
When I print the file (saved as an AI), the colors are bold, the font is crisp, and everthing overall looks fantastic, apart from this "box" around some of the elements I have created/added to the file.
When being printed from an exported jpeg format, the boxes are not present, but the image overall is of lesser quality (i know it's from being compressed to a jpeg), and the colors are not as bold.
I only have a black & white printer, a Brother MFC-7220. I only found out this issue when my curiousity got the best of me, and printed it to see what it'd look like on paper (8.5"x11") before we sent it off to the print shot. This is when I noticed the problem.
The elements which have this box around them were edited in Photoshop CS 6 (trial), where I had (at least thought), disposed of each elements background, so I could import them into AI as objects, without any background.
The files were edited in PS in new documents with a transparent background, saved as a PSD, then "opened" in Illustrator where I simply copied the object and pasted into the AI file I was working in. I've tried recreating/re-adding the elements from PS back into AI with the same issue.
The image also looks perfect on my screen, no boxes whatsoever. I've tried playing around with printer settings, transparency/raster settings, but the only thing I can get close, is the low-quality jpeg file. This problem also happens when exporting to a PDF, which is what I typically use for my printing format from AI.
Any ideas what's going on here? The pictures linked below show a photo of the AI and the jpeg, and a screencap of my desktop as the AI stands right now. The jpeg export has a few minor changes to it, but are still otherwise the same. The only items that are "supposed" to have this, are the logos for our sponsors in the bottom-left corner.
I'm stumped, nothing is working that I've read about, and I need to get these printed as soon as I can! Any help would be appreciated - please keep in mind I'm a novice when it comes to AI/PS, I know mostly basics.
PICTURES

I, too am having the same issue printing from AI CS5. I have edited images in PS CS5 and there is a transparent background. I then placed (File>Place) the PSD files into AI and everything looks good on screen. However, I'm also getting a strange box that appears around my images—though the box itself isn't a solid opaque—it looks more like there's a overprint or screen and so it just shifts the colors behind it. I've tried saving the images as transparent PNGs with the same result. I've also tried playing with my transparency settings in the print dialogue to no avail.
Strangely this is only occurring when I print at 100% size. I came upon this by happenstance when I accidentally printed a copy at 75% and everything was fine. If anyone has any insights, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Xerox 7400 weird behavior when printing from Illustrator/Acrobat CS3

Hi,
Since I have Leopard, every time I try to print anything from Illustrator on the 7400N and doing more than one copy, it looks like the printer takes every copy as a separate print job (but in the print queue looks like one).
This is what it's going on:
- Illustrator takes much more time to process the same printout, let's say... if I want to print 20 copies, it looks like it takes 20 times the amount of time it does when printing just one copy.
- The printer takes much more time to print, and before it prints every copy I see the message "Processing Data - Please Wait" in the 7400 LCD Display. That message should pop up only one time at the beginning, not every time it makes a copy.
But all this happens when I print vector images, if try to print a raster image from Photoshop for instance, or a PDF document from Preview (which rasterizes the image before sending the printjob to the 7400), everything behaves normally.
It looks to me that the problem pops up only if If the printjob is sent using postscript language. I had CS3 and the same printer under Tiger and no problem at all, so I believe it has a to be a Leopard problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Gah!
Why the hell is that disabled by default???
The other way I fixed it was to change from "Times" to "Times New Roman" and that worked (even without the Download PPD Fonts option checked).
Thanks!

• I'm getting # marks when printing from Word to .pdf; what's going on?

I recently reinstalled OS and all software, including Acrobat 9.  (No virus, just like to freshen things up on the system.)  Now, when I print from Word to a .pdf file, I get # marks inserted near header and footer.  This never happened before.  I unchecked the box (under properties) that says, "rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" and that made them go away, but I never had to mess with that previously.  Is that, in fact, the solotion, or is there something else going on that needs to be corrected?
Thanks

The check box was checked by default.  I made no revisions to the settings after reinstalling Adobe.
As noted, this had never happened before.  The document was a letter with a letterhead graphic inserted (.png I believe).  When I pulled up various old letters I prepared using the letterhead template or even the blank letterhead template itself and printed to .pdf, the # marks showed up, whereas that had never happened previously.  Again, though, I made no changes to the default settings, so I'm wondering whether unchecking the check box really did take care of the problem or is just "masking" or "hiding" some other issue.

• Page numbers are not generated correctly when print from Word to PDF

Whenever I print my Word document to PDF, my page numbers do not reflect the page numbers shown in Print Preview.
For example, I have a Word document with 10 pages and after generating it as PDF, the page number shows Page 1 of 1; Page 2 of 2; Page 3 of 3; ......Page 10 of 10.
Please advise what may be the cause and how can I rectify this problem?
Thank you.

Thank you for your reply.
I do have some sections breaks on the pages, however the pages are all shown in running sequence even on Preview page.
It is the final generated document that has this problem.
I emailed my colleagues my WORD document and ask them to generate to PDF and they have no issues printing the WORD to PDF and every pages were in running order.
Any other advise?

• When printing from Illustrator the document prints Black instead of Blue

Computer is Windows 7 x64 running adobe CS6.  The printer is a HP laserjet 3800dn the driver for the printer is PCL5 but it does the same thing printing with the Postscript driver.  We have a navy blue color that prints out black for some reason. In the print options right before releasing the job we changed the use Illustrator colors to use Post script colors and it still does the same thing....Prints black where blue is supposed to go on the document.  Doesn't matter if it is a .jpeg or plain text.  Sending the job to a different printer works which is a Xerox workcentre.

Well, I thought perhaps I skipped over where you said yellow printed but blue didn't...all I see is blue prints as black. And from your screen shot, it was that grayscale checkbox I was thinking of might have been set.
Do you have another of these HP printers available? If so, does it print correctly?
Have you made sure there isn't a corrupt driver and or updated drivers on your system? Can another computer print to this printer correctly?
Seems that if the Xerox prints it fine, then it isn't Illy.

• When printing from Illustrator it prints Black instead of Blue

We have had this issue for a while now and cannot grasp it.  We have CS6 and Illustrator decides to print whatever it feels like.  Printing to a regular PCL driver prints black ink where blue is supposed to go.  We also tried changing the print driver to Post Script with the same black ink printing instead of blue.  Also in the print options right before releasing the job we changed the use Illustrator colors to use Post script colors and it still does the same thing.  We sent the job to a different printer and it prints out alright.  Why doesn't it work on our HP Laserjet 3800dn?  All other documents not created in Adobe products will print out blue just fine.  I want to know what is broken in Adobe Illustrator.

Ask in teh AI forum and provide more details like system specs, exact print settings, color management and so on.

• Some text not printing when printing from FM8 to Pdf

We have recently upgraded to Acrobat 9 and now have problems with some Helvetica text not showing up in the pdfs.  If we change the text to Arial it prints.  Changing/substituting Arial for Helvetica is not an option since these files are structure using modules built by a 3rd party.  This is obviously an issue with Framemaker8 and Acrobat 9 so my hopes are that someone else has had this issue and has a fix.

Thanks Art. Sorry, I looked through the forum and didn't see any Q&A on missing text in Pdfs.  We are on Windows XP working files from our desktop and our server.  Our normal method of producing pdfs is through File>Print using our minor customized pdf settings for screen viewing and hires printing (we've used these settings for years).  Since our upgrade to Acrobat 9 we are now using Distiller 9.2.0.124.  I've also found out since I first posted my question that we are not on the latest version of Framemaker8.  I will run the updates to get us to the latest version of 8 and see if that fixes what seems to be an incompatiblity issue between FM8 and Acrobat 9.  I say that because this problem started when we upgraded to Acrobat 9.  If that doesn't fix the problem, I'll get back to you to find out more about the Microsoft printer Hotfix.  Unless you know for a fact that FM8 is not compatible with Distiller 9.2.0.124, in that case we'll need to upgrade to FM9.

• Colors are appearing washed out when saving from Illustrator to PDF

Hey Guys,
I am working on a cover page for my office to go along with our bid packages. I have finished adding all of the elements that they wanted and added a little flare to it. Its a really basic document and when I save it into a PDF form, the colors appear washed out or like the PDF adds a lot of white. the Rich black appear gray, the red appears pinkish... and the blue is much lighter than it looks in AI.
I need this to be completed soon, and I have been having this problem for a while now. Im not sure if its just the way it looks on the screen, or if it will print like that. I am a self taught Adobe guy.. So I am a little confused as to how to make this all work
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Steve

Steve,
What the PDF ultimately looks like depends on the settings when you create it. If you open it in Reader, it may be somewhat off, but in Acrobat it should look right (if your colour management settings are the same as in Illy).
A rich black may be customized to match the artwork in question (such as no C if there is no C in the artwork), or you may have some of each, often with emphasis on C and maybe M; there may be different views on what a rich black should hold.

• Printing from Illustrator does not match Photoshop

I have CS3. The colorsuite is matched across all platforms so colour profiles are all the same.
I print pure cmyk colours in a document, so one square is cyan, another magenta and so on.
When I print from photoshop, it prints the colours correct. Each colour is printed from each printers colour cartridge directly. But when I print from Illustrator, its not printing purely. The colours are darker and have mixed colours under a magnifier.
Ive tested on different printers and with colour management off on their drivers so should use adobes.
Any ideas why Illustrator is coming out muddier? Many thanks in advance.

Yes the mode is definately CMYK in photoshop. See the images attached of scanned closeup of the print out of yellow.
Yellow below is how it looks when printing from Illustrator and Acrobat. You can see its added dots to it.
Yellow below is from Photoshop. You can see its pure yellow which is what I want.
Edit: Just tried Overprint: Simulate in Acrobat. No change.
Edit2: "I would like to know what's the definition of "correct"?" For a start Magenta looks like a dark red. Cyan is blue but a dark shade of it.
