Mysterious ticking noise comming from what appears to be fan

Ok, so I own a MacBook Pro 13" and I've had it for maybe a little under 6 months.  Yesterday, I discovered a mysterious ticking noise comming from the upper-left bottom of the MacBook.  I presume it is coming from the fan, as right now, my CPU temperature ifs 142F and the fan is running at 000rpm.  Running Apple Diagnostics confirms my suspicions as it comes up with an error that ends in Exhaust, which I believe is the fan.
I have tried resetting the SMC with the SHIFT-Control-Option-Power combination with no success.
I have scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar on monday but I was wondering if there are any known solutions at the mean time.
Thanks.
(PS: I have the latest version of Snow Leopard: 10.6.7)

What was the error message exactly ?  If it's the fan motor then it would show MTR, if it's a temperature sensor error it would show SNS.
The fact that fan isn't running implies the motor has failed and you're right to get that fixed a.s.a.p.

  • Does the noise come from harddisk or fan?

    Hi all,
My powerbook 17'' always has this noise come from left side of the powerbook. I am unable to determine the source of the noise coz I am not sure where is the exact location of the noise. (I read that the fan supposed to be in left side of keyboard and harddisk is in the left side of the palm rest; please correct me if I am wrong).
The noise is like something spinning all the time in a constant speed. Is the harddisk supposed to be spinning all the time when we turned the powerrbook on?
The noise starts after booting up and I always can hear it (even in idle) until I turn the powerbook to sleep.
I usually work at night with my powerbook, so my surrounding is really quite.
Does your powerbook have this noise too? Or is it really silent (and only has some clicking noise when accessing/writing to the harddisk). I just wanna know if my powerbook behaves normally.
    Thanks

Is the harddisk supposed to spin all the time (even no read/write activity)?
There is what has been called a sizzling sound that constantly emanates from this computer, and, depending on the combination of your sensitivity to it and the presence of ambient noise, is clearly audible in a silent room, but this is easy to differentiate from the fan, which is quite a bit louder. If you haven't done any processor intensive tasks, then it's possible that you have never heard this fan, which doesn't go on, I believe, until the CPU has reached a temperature of about 145F. On the other hand, the 'sizzling' sound has been a frequent topic of discussion in this forum. Over the course of the first two revisions of the PB 17, one thread on the subject grew to around 300 posts in length.
If you are dubious about the state of your HD, run the Disk Repair tool in Disk Utility while you are booted from your installation DVD to check the drive's SMART status. If you want to investigate this further, boot into the installation DVD again holding down the Option key and run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Having eliminated any applications or startup items as the cause of the problem, your last troubleshooting step might be to reinstall your OS. Before you do that, see if you can find another 1.67GHz machine to listen to so you can compare the sounds you hear from both. It may be that there is really nothing to worry about....
    Good luck.

  • Strange loud noises comming from speaker

    Hello,
I owned Nokia 2730 Classic for a few years...
One night, i was almost asleep when suddenly, a loud noise comming from my phone alert me (the phone was in stand by on my desk). The noise was comming from the speaker, i recon. In background a documentary was playing (consider the difference of the volume between the phone and the PC -> the noise comming from the phone was very loud).
This is an isolated incident; not repeating.
    http://youtu.be/8eF56cOviyw
So please tell me if the problem could be related to a hardware issue or not.
    Thank you,

So you don't say which year your MacBook Pro is from or the size.
This is from the late 2011 MBP 13"
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Late+2011+Battery+Repla cement/7649
This looks like your machine. So step 5 shows where that battery screw is. It's a triwing and requires a special screwdriver. That tab could have broken if the computer was dropped like straight down. Not too much of a problem.
    So the fan:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Late+2011+Fan+Replaceme nt/7654
When you take the fan out, you'll closely examine the grill at the top of the fan in step 6. It's most likely filled with lint like in a dryer.
So with the fan out examine it carefully. Spin it and see if it makes the noise you're hearing. There's probably something stuck in there. Use compressed air to blow it out. Or if it's bad you might have to replace it.

Why would you need to do anything at all?  The machine is under warranty, if there's something broken, that's what the warranty is for.

  • Strange noise come from my Mac Pro

    - When I add a second Graphic Card, the noise is strongest.
Do you have an idea ?
PS : My Mac Pro, is the First generation mac pro, with 2 Xeon @2.66Ghz, 6 Gig of Ram, Two 500Go Hard Drive, The 7300 Gt graphic Card.

Its like a tiny buzzing sound when the screen is refreshing. I seems come from the RAM. but i have remove the Ram and its still here.
    Its really anoying.

  • A noise comes from my ear-phone

    Hi,
If this post is in-appropriate for any reasons, please let me know, and I am sorry for that.
But I did google and follow the instructions on the wiki, and nothing helps.
A noise, sounds like electricity, just comes.
And another buzz sound comes together while moving the mouse.
    My system is:
    Mother board= ASUS P4P800 (ICH4-Inter ICH5, 82801EB/ER, AD1985)
    Kernel=2.6.27.10-1
    alsa-lib=1.0.18-1
    alsa-utils=1.0.18-1
Does anyone use the same mother-board without sound problem?   or
anyone has a clue how to check out the problem?
    thx

    Thank all of you.
I tried Ubuntu Live CD, and the noise still comes out.
So how can I be sure if it is a "hardware" problem?
I mean... the noise comes out while "udevadm settle" (in /etc/rc.sysinit) had finished.
If it is a "hardware" problem, shouldn't it comes out even in.... BIOS (or GRUB) ?
Besides, udevadm settle is used to load kernel modules, so it is quite reasonable to say that
there must be some modules which cause this problem, right?
Also I tried to remove kernel modules used by none, but it doesn't help, neither.
    Those modules still loaded are:

  • I was laying in bed, using my phone last night. Without dropping it, applying pressure or anything, I heard a "pop" noise come from my phone, and when I turned on my light I saw that there was a crack across the top part of my screen. What are my options?

I need to know what kind of support apple has for this sort of problem, and if I can get it fixed or replaced free of charge because I didn't do anything to cause it. It just cracked while in my hand.

Take it to an Apple store genius bar and see what the techs suggest.  Some Apple stores in the US are now able to do repairs on the iPhone 5 series, including screen replacement.

  • Noise comming from the right side of my MBP

Hi, i have a new 2012 regular 15" mbp. I had the Retina at first, it was completely silent, but this macbook i can hear, especially the right side. Both fans are running at idle 2000RPM. Is this the 7200RPM hard drive making noise? Its not terribly loud, but compared to the Retina its definitely audible.
    Thanks in advance.

    Call Apple Care.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • I received a bulk email from what appeared to be my fiance, but the Outlook preview pane opened it automatically and now there are issues

The origin address was <[email protected]>. Whatever happened, it sent the bulk email to her entire address book, so I may not be the only one with issues. If Firefox crashes again, I will continue to feed the error reporting. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Do you mean the Outlook that is part of Microsoft Office, or the Outlook online email site (mail.live.com)?
If you think this message may have infected your system or installed an add-on in Firefox, then I suggest these clean-up steps:
Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This should bring recent items to the top. Take out as much trash as possible here.
You can "mop up" remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools suggested in this support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Finally, in Firefox, open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    (1) In the left column, click Plugins. If you find a plugin that you don't recognize or which doesn't sound essential, try setting it to "Never Activate". (The most essential Plugin is Shockwave Flash. You can use most sites without the others.)
    (2) In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Does that clear it up?

  • I have a load noise from what sounds like the fan.  MBP 15" 2009

My MBP 15" makes a grinding sound that will go away and then come back.  If it is the fan, how difficult is this to have replaced?

13 screws. 10 for the bottom pan and 3 for the fan. Takes 3 screws longer than upgrading the RAM, with the advantage that the fan is not static-sensitive.
If one fan is bad, the other will follow shortly thereafter. Under warranty, Apple always changes both, you should follow suit. www.ifixit.com has the procedure and the parts you need.
For diagnosing if it IS the fan, use an Old Mechanic's Trick: get a short, thin metal rod. Place one end against the bony area right in front of your good ear. Place the other end against various spots on the Mac to determine the nature of the sound and its exact location. Use iFixIt's photos to see which component is the noisemaker: on the 15" MBP there are 4 candidates: 2 fans, one HDD and one optical drive. No other moving parts inside.

  • Awk returns different string from what appears to be the exact same?

Hey, this is more of a general awk issue.
I'm running Arch on an x200 Thinkpad tablet and trying to improve on the rotate script in the wiki.
Currently, the wiki's script has predefined values for the stylus/eraser devices that don't work for all systems (mine for example).  I would like to make it so that these device names are discovered by the script at runtime so that the user doesn't have to edit the script to make it work.
In order to do this, I'm using
    stylus="$(xsetwacom --list | grep STYLUS | awk '{$NF="\b"; print}')"
    and likewise for the eraser.
The problem is that when the script runs, it says "Cannot find device 'Serial Wacom Tablet stylus'." even though that's the exact thing I had in the script before messing with the variable assignment.
What makes these strings different? Is there some nuance of awk that I'm missing?

Like I said, a slight modification of the original wiki script.
    xsetwacom --list returns
    Serial Wacom Tablet stylus STYLUS
    Serial Wacom Tablet eraser ERASER
    Edit:
I whipped up a short script to illustrate my problem
    #! /bin/bash
    therightthing="Serial Wacom Tablet stylus"
    stylus="$(xsetwacom --list | grep STYLUS | awk '{$NF="\b"; print}')"
    if [ "$therightthing" = "$stylus" ]; then
    echo "Equal"
    else
    echo "Not Equal"
    echo "$stylus |"
    echo "$therightthing |"
    fi
The vertical line is my check for trailing whitespace.  When run, it returns that they're not equal, but the strings look the exact same.
    Output:
    Not Equal
    Serial Wacom Tablet stylus |
    Serial Wacom Tablet stylus |

  • Where Does These Handles Come From In Color v1?

When i add handles in Color where are they coming from?
    i.e.
if the clip goes to color as a say 3 second clip. I then grade it and add a 5 frame handle.
Does the 5 frames come from the clip in motion or doe it come from the footage before an after the fcp edit points?
if it comes from what i sent then how do i maintain my edit/style rhythm of cuts?

    in@ 00:03:20 and then out@ 00:04:20...
If those numbers are the source time code *at 23.98 fps*, there would be 24 frames in that clip. If you did not add handles, a new clip (#_1.mov) would be rendered and placed in the COLOR project render directory of your choosing. On Send To FCP, a new clip with the old reference name (but pointing to the new media) will appear on the FCP sequence and it will be 24 frames starting at 3:20 and ending at 4:20.
If you request the addition of 4-frame handles, the clip will be rendered with a duration of 2444=32 frames. The clip "#_1.mov" source time code will be 3:16 to 5:00 (remembering this is 24 fps). When it appears on the FCP timeline, a one-second clip will show up and it will be In/3:20, Out/4:20, but you will be able to slip it +/- 4 frames or add up to a 4-frame transition outside the
    selected pickup points.
It has not much to do with the master time code of the edit sequence, the handles only get added to the "source" clip, but it does not affect its pickup or duration on the master sequence. On the Master sequence, you would still only see the 24 original frames... but if you wanted to trim the edit a couple of frames, you would have them.
You must understand that COLOR generates new independent media, usually ONLY the selected footage on the timeline. Handles are a way of generating extra media in an attempt to build in some post-lock flexibility, and they do not affect the edited sequence selection in any other way.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430 ticking noise

    Hi all,
My Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430 has started making some ticking noise coming from the left corner of the laptop. If any video is on sometimes the voice disappears for a few seconds after the intensified ticking. Slightly pressing down the speakers helps stopping the noise for a short while. Any idea what the issues could be and how I could solve them?
Thanks a lot for your help!!
    Maria

All I can say is that it's an error in the marketing material.
I'm 100% certain that this feature does not exist on any ThinkPad Edge system, including your S430.  There is not any possibility to add this feature because the hardware that makes it possible does not exist on ThinkPad Edge.  It's not a case of providing some new software or BIOS to enable the feature.
If this is a feature that you require, and you bought your S430 based on this faulty marketing material, I suggest that you call the sales support phone number in your country and ask them how they want to handle it.  I'm very sorry for this trouble caused by wrong marketing material.
