Mysteriously unreadable Unix/JPEGs

I have scores of JPEGs that I removed from my late mother's 1st gen. iMac running OS 9.2.2. They were perfectly readable/viewable when they were on her machine, however now that I am trying to see them on my PPC G5/OS10.5.5 they have morphed into "Unix Executable FIles" that, when double-clicked, launch the app Terminal. A little window of gobbledy-gookcomes up and the only real info contained therein says: "cannot execute binary file." If I drag/drop the file onto the Photoshop icon I get a warning saying PS does not recognize the type of file.
The odd thing is that hey would appear to contain all the original data since most are in the over-1 meg file-size range.
Are these photos lost to me forever or is there some other app out there that can crack 'em open?

Take a look at the name: does it have an extension? Thus, when you do GetInfo on the file is its name "somepicture" or "somepicture.jpg"? If the files are missing the extension ".jpg" simply add the extension, you should then be able to view the pix.

  • Mysterious Unread Message

My Gmail account on my Iphone keeps telling me that I have one unread message in my inbox but I do not. I searched all the forums and nothing has really worked except touching the home button for 10 seconds which restarts the mail app. But I don't want to have to do that every time I read a new message!
I thought it was because of the recent update that Iphone came out with, but my sister is having the same problem on her blackberry. Can anyone out there figure this one out?

A couple of things you can try to resolve this issue.
    1. delete the email account from your iphone by going to settings>mail.your gmail account and tap the red delete button at the bottom of the account screen.
    2. once the account is deleted, go to settings>general>reset and reset network settings.
After the iphone restarts, add the email account back to the iphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • CS 5 won't open images from Lightroom 3

    Hi,
I just upgraded to CS5 from CS3, and I've been using Lightroom 3 since it came out. The installation went fine. After working on some images in Lightroom 3.3, I tried to open them in CS5 12.02, and strange things started to happen. Some times the images open, some times they don't. This applies to NEFs, TIFFs, and PSDs. Sometimes when I try to open an image from my Lightroom catalog, CS5 mysteriously opens small jpegs of photos that are not even in my catalog. In fact, they are images I don't even recognize and did not even know were on my computer.
I called Adobe Customer Support. They were helpful, and they had me set CS5 as my external editor as well as being the primary editor. They also helped me reset my preferences for both Lightroom and CS5. This seemed to work, but when I opened Lightroom and CS5 the next day, the problem started happening again, even when I open images in CS5 using the second external editor.
I spent over and hour on the phone with Customer Support the first time, and I'm trying to get help elsewhere before I call again.
I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8 with 4 GB of RAM.
Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Another expirience is, when I try to open directly from Photoshop any other image, Photoshop ignores the XMP and opens the original file without any modification.
That's normal if the raw files were originally edited in Lightroom. Lightroom stores all edits in the catalog, not the xmp sidecar. You can set Lightroom to write to xmp as well, but that slows it down a little and so it's off by default. The Lightroom shortcut ctrl/cmd+S will also save to xmp.
I do have a warining at several images in Lightroom = "metadates have been changed - would you like to overwrite data or import ?"
That's related to the above, and also normal if you go the other way - edit in ACR and then move to Lightroom. It'll then be in xmp, but not the Lightroom catalog.
As for the missing on-screen image, that's a common video driver bug (although I suppose other causes are possible). For Windows you can download updated drivers directly from the manufacturer's website, but that's not possible with Mac. You'll have to wait for Apple to fix it.

  • PSCS3 won't open Nikon D7000 RAW files

I just purchased a Nikon D7000. Shot some RAW files and tried to download to iPhoto, not possible. SO, installed Nikon VIEW NX2, and Transfer 2. RAW images downloaded to my computer (late 2008 Macbook Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, Camera RAW plug-in 6) into ViEW 2. But showing the followiing format:   _DSC001.NEF
    Normally, it should read:  DSC_001.NEF
SO within the Nikon software, I can work on the image, but I cannot export it into PS.  It comes up with an error that the image format is unreadable.  (Nor can I find how to get it out of VIEW NX2 , but that might just be my lack of reading all the info there, will see)
I contacted Nikon and they told me to change something in Image Capture in my MAC apps. I went there, but Image Capture was already set to the change they asked me to do.
I tried to download again, but same problem. I tried to download into iPhoto, in order to try and get it into PS,  but it wouldn't. All files were unreadable.
JPEG, however, does download, with both file formats, and opensin iPhoto and PS, whether there is a _ first or a letter first.
SO, I don't know what to do. I am assuming all my plug-in's are up to date.
My D70 RAW transfers fine!!! The D7000, not.
Any info out there??? Nikon has not replied back a second time when I responded to them.
Thank you for any help. I welcome it all.

    Thanks, all of you.
I downloaded Adobe Camera Raw DNG 6.4 (Not 7.1 as I read it worked slow and had some bugs still in it) and backcomplied it to open in a 4.6 format. It works to open RAW in my PSCS3 now. Great! Of course I definitely will be checking out PSCS6 Extended for an upgrade, but for now, I can use this.
I have 3 questions that I am not clear on.
    1) When I converted, I included the 'original raw file' within the DNG, as opposed to NOT incuding it. They say you can open it later, that it is inside the DNG. Please someone explain to me how this can be when I am adjusting and cropping my files after opening in RAW.? (OK I know nothing about this). Where do I find the file???
    2) I did notice a little bit of color loss, or maybe it is in the Adobe 1998 color space, but it seemed to transfer fine. Is this the case?
    3) If I save in Tiff, would the embedded file still be in the DNG ??It would no longer be a DNG file. I am asuming that I SHOULD be saving an original conversion in DNG for archives and to make copies from.  I really do not understand this. I am saving the original NEF file in the Nikon VIEW NX2 for later use as a backup.
    Thank you again.

  • Importing into iphoto from disk

    hey...
I saved my family photo library to a cd before i reinstalled my OS, and now when i put the cd in, i can only access the photos in preview. If i try to import (drag) into iphoto, a message pops saying that they are unreadable files (jpegs anyhow). So if i export the photo from preview into my pics folder, i can then drag it into iphoto and it shows up, and in the process i think it becomes a tiff. I do have about 950 photos on this cd however, and i don't really want to do this process 950 times. Any shorter cuts?
    thanks
    josh

    Joshua,
You didn't really answer my question. Insert the CD and see if it contains a folder named "iPhoto Library".
The most convenient form of backup is a copy of the entire iPhoto Library folder. If it begins getting too large for a single CD, then consult iPhoto Help and learn how to create new photo libraries. If you go that route, then also learn about switching between libraries. You can also make iPhoto CDs from the iPhoto interface. When you pop those in the drive, they will appear near the top of your albums pane -- think of it as an external album. Copying (or moving) your iPhoto library to an external disk drive is another good alternative.
Alternatively, if you have a special group of pictures (or pictures you want to view outside of iPhoto), you can back them up by exporting them to their own folder. The answer to your question depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

  • One of those annoying reconnection problems

Problem is with one particular quicktime file. File is "missing". FCP ignores my attempts to reconnect it. (No error messages).  "Matched name and reel" tick makes no difference.
There are three possible causes I can think of. (I've been assuming it's the first one).
    1. The file had to be professionally retrieved from damaged drives. The file is apparently completely fine when played in Quicktime, but it now has the .mov extension which it didn't before. If I turn the extension off, it turns into an unreadable unix file. Hiding the extension makes no difference.
    2. While the file was away being retrieved I upgraded from FCP 5 to 7.
    3. Before the drives failed, the file could not be copied, presumably due to corruption.
I'm by no means an expert on reconnecting, but I managed to reconnect all the other files without a hitch, (when it was still FCP 5).
Any ideas, including obvious things I may not have considered, will be greatly appreciated.

    1. Extensions are required if there's no application icon suc as FCP, that's typical of OS10. If the file plays in QT, export it.
    2. Upgrading in the middle of the project was a bad idea. But shoudl have no effect on your ability to reconnect.
    3. Drives failed? P.ural? Bummer. There are many reasona file canot be copied or moved. Damage or corruption is not usually one of them. Most likely permissions or the file was never any good to begin with.
Back to 1: You're probably never going to reconnect it so assume the worst. Export the file from QT player using a conventional codec. Reimport it and start hacking it back into the program, one piece at a time.

  • In PS6 when i" save as" i lose the jpeg suffix and new image is unreadable, anyone know resolution?

In PS6 when i" save as" i lose the jpeg suffix and new image is unreadable, does anyone know a resolution ?

jpeg is a lossy image compression. Try seeting the "quality" input to 100 (default is 80).
I would recommend to use PNG instead, it's a better format for this purpose. (jpeg is for photographs).

  • Mysterious Unix Files

Ever since upgrading to 10.4 I seem to be getting an increasing number of my files converted to Unix Executable File types. The file Icon is a black box with "exec" in the upper left corner. The files are rendered useless. What is causing these files to appear/be converted to this type?

Couldn't the problem also be that for some unknown reason the executable bit for the file has been set? I seem to remember that if the resource fork is missing AND the executable bit is set, Finder assumes the file is a UNIX executable. I believe this has happened to people who attempted to copy fonts from an OS 9 machine to a FAT 32 disk or Windows Server, and then into OS X. Instead of a font they have a UNIX executable file that does nothing at all. I think I've seen this happen with material archived to ISO 9660 CDs and then copied to OS X. While my recent pdf docs do not have the executable bit set, some of my old ones do, however they still have their resource forks and so open with Preview (my default pdf application). For example, when I do a "ls -l" command on a new pdf file, I get this:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 francine francine 39449 Aug 14 2002 smug.pdf
    An old file shows this:
    -rwxrwxrwx 1 francine francine 120176 Apr 15 1999 2dedits.pdf
If I strip the resource fork and delete the pdf extension from that file, the Finder slaps a UNIX executable icon on it, since it no longer has a clue as to what the file it is supposed to be, and Preview will no longer open it. If I add the pdf extension back it opens in Preview just fine.

  • Mystery.  jpeg stills require rendering on FCP timeline??

I'm co-editing a film with a partner on the other side of the continent. We are using a lot of stills. I use GraphicConverter to re-size the 300dpi stills to 72dpi. (300dpi stills slow down FCP considerably, and take a lot longer to render.)
My 72dpi versions are working just fine. Do not require rendering on the timeline (the green line above) ... so I can set keyframes and plan movements, requiring rendering only when I'm satisfied.
My partner has done the same thing, with the same still in fact, in GraphicConverter ... but when he brings that 72dpi still into his FCP it requires rendering (red line) before he can even work with it. Ironically, the 300dpi original stills DON'T require rendering (but will, I'm sure, slow down his work to a virtual stall when he gets a number of those stills on the same timeline).
A mystery? Is there perhaps something we are missing in the FCP preferences, or the timeline settings? The timeline settings are set exactly the same on both systems (HDV 1080i60).
Any help would be most appreciated,
    Ben

I had a somewhat similar problem once and it turned out to be some bizzare naming scheme a PC used to name files sequentially.
Try taking picture A and making your GC version. Have him take picture A and make his GC version. Have him zip the image, email it to you and then you open both in GC and compare their specs. Off-hand I can't think of anything in FCP that would affect this but I'm not sure.
It could be something innocuous like a resource fork for a thumbnail or his are RGB and yours are CMYK or something.

  • Mp3 files mysteriously converting themselves to jpeg's

a very weird thing has been happening to my music collection in itunes. some of the files (mainly, mp3, but other formats also) seemed unplayable. when i clicked on the track and "get info", it shows that the file - although keeping the same track name - is now a jpeg file of a family photo in my iphoto library. moreover, on just about every album i loaded into itunes, at least a couple of tracks are showing up like this with no discernible pattern as to which ones or why.
is this a bug, a virus, or have i done something silly?
    thanks...

  • Email inbox showing (a mysterious) ONE unread

And yet I can find NO unread messages!
Clicking on all the little triangles (HOW does one get RID of those darned triangles anyway!?) .
Does anyone know HOW to get the inbox to show without the little red circle on the stamp at the bottom of the screen?
Even when I sort to 'show unread' ... nothing 'unread' or 'new' shows up!
    Thanks!!!!!

THANK YOU!  (How odd ... it was an OLD message from February ... and had never shown up before!)
    That's ... uh... weird.
Anyway, that darned red indicator on the MacMail stamp is gone.
I REALLY appreciate your help here!!!!
And the 'little triangles' are not the ones in the extra mail boxes ... but the (sigh) 'new and improved' Mac Mail triangles, indicating a thread.
I would LIKE to get rid of those and just have to use my (gasp) brain to remember the conversation(s).
Any ideas on how to do that?
    Thanks again

  • Case of the Mysteriously Missing Unread Messages

Mail claims I have unread messages, but none exist. This happens with multiple servers using both POP and IMAP. I can select 'Mark all Messages as Read' from the inbox, and it will still claim there are some number (currently 7) of unread messages. I have an unread messages smart mailbox, and it is empty. Sometimes restarting mail will make them disappear, sometimes it does not.
It has been going on for months, and may be connected with the PGP plug-in.
Obviously this is not a show stopper as I still get my mail, but it is extraordinarily bothersome. I cannot at a glance tell if I need to look at mail based on the badge, so I spend time opening the app and checking manually. I am considering switching to Thunderbird...
    Please help.

I have already rebuilt the mailboxes, but I'll try again.
I actually really need the PGP plug-in. I've looked on the message boards for PGP though, and I don't find any other people with the same issue so it seems unlikely it is the culprit. I mentioned it anyway because it seemed to begin around the same time I installed PGP and another ancient post here about the same problem had PGP too.
Either way, I'm going to try removing the plugin temporarily to see if it is the problem.
    Thanks.

  • Signature jpeg unreadable

I use a jpeg of my business logo as my signature, but some recipients write back that they can't open the attachment -- which is just the signature. I just found out that it screws up the entire message and makes it a MIME file.
This has only happened with a couple of recipients that I know of, but it's annoying. I believe they are using PCs (the poor saps), but I would like to avoid anything on my end that exacerbates the problem.
    Thanx for any input!

More than likely, the recipients with the problem are Windows Outlook users and if so, Outlook is known to have problems with Mail's RTF especially when incorporating such a signature.
Since the signature is an attachment and if you are using RTF for message composition, try using Plain Text instead. If everyone used Plain Text for message composition, the majority if not all problems experienced with sending and receiving electronic mail would be eliminated.

  • Mystery: XP display color scheme : silver can result in black on black unreadable controls

My setup is a Dell PC running XP Professional.  Display Dell 1901 (also does this on Default Display).  Intel 82856G Integrated Graphics driver. LabVIEW 7.1.
The color settings for the 5 controls on the attached .vi are foreground: 179 179 179 and background 255 255 255 yet some appear as black on black in the XP display color scheme : silver and some appear as black on white.  By setting the XP color scheme to default, you can use the color sample and color fill tools to change whether a control will be black on black or black on white in the color scheme : silver view.  It appears like there is some "magic property" that is not foreground or background color that is being copied with the color sample and fill tools.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
I was a bit puzzled by this myself until someone suggested I use the "color sucker" tool to find out what the current colors of the enums were.
The color sucker tool (aka eye-dropper) can be used by selecting the paintbrush tool and holding CTRL on the keyboard.  Now left-click the item you want to check the color of.  Right-click any object to bring up the color picker, and look at the colors in the history.  The one furthest to the right (that isn't "empty") is the color you just picked up with the color sucker.
You'll notice that on the problematic enums, the background color is "Hilight Text".  This is a system color that will change depending on the theme you use.  On the silver theme, it is black or near-black.  On the others it is white or near-white.
When picking colors, you might want to be careful to watch the text next to the curently selected color box.  If it has RGB values, this is safe (theme-independent).  It's also safe to use named colors in the "User" list, such as "Control Background".  But if the named color is a system color, it can change depending on your theme.
Disclaimer: I don't know if color sucker or eye dropper is the "official" term for this tool.

  • Unix mystery; error status = 1 and 2;

    In a terminal:
    $ cat nonexistantfile ; echo $?
cat: nonexistantfile: No such file or directory
    1
    $ cp /usr/include/sys/errno.h /usr/include/sys/abc.h; echo $?
    cp: /usr/include/sys/abc.h: Permission denied
    1
The error messages are correct; the numeric values are the same, even though they are different errors. One of them should be a 2, no?
    Why?

Most (but not all) C tools and many C routines will use zero as a success code and non-zero as failure, though that can vary. Outside of the ERRNO stuff, there's no particular agreement on individual errors, and there's no particular uniformity on whether you'll get ERRNO or some other value.
Check the man pages for the return values for the various commands.
"The cp utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs."
"The cat utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs."
Beyond that, there's not a particularly dependable consistency. Sometimes from one version of the tool to the next, unfortunately.
