Mystery forced mailbox imports

This has happened to me three times now over the past couple of months since I moved to Leopard. For no apparent reason Mail.app pops up a dialogue box telling me (if I remember right) that it needs to rebuild the indexes and forces me to quit. On restart it wants to import all my emails all over again. That's currently more than 23,000 of them (work emails mostly, going back to 2002).
I can't figure out why. The only clue is a single entry in system.log at about the same time this happened (maybe exactly the same time, I'm not sure) which reads:
Mar 27 16:30:31 Dino Mail[292]: Moving database to /Users/john/Library/Mail/Envelope Index-1... no errors
Since then I've googled for "Envelope Index" and understand what it's there for. But the strange thing is that looking back through my Time Machine backups, I didn't have an "Envelope Index" prior to this error. It simply didn't exist. It was there in the 16:38 backup, but not in the 15:38 backup, or any backup before that.
Anyone got any clues what might be going on here?
BTW, the other pain in the butt about importing all my mail again is that it insists on re-caching all my .Mac attachments, which takes ages and generates gobs of network traffic. This time I'm at home. The last time I was on a hotel WiFi network. If this ever throws a fit when I'm stuck somewhere on my 3G data card, I'll be in trouble!

Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail.
Do you have more than one Envelope Index file?

This seems to indicate that you might - Envelope Index-1.
There should be no -1 included with the file name. It should be Envelope Index only.
Since this has occurred 3 times over the past couple of months - I've never experienced the same before or since upgrading to Leopard, I suggest deleting the Envelope Index file. If there is an Envelope Index file and an Envelope Index-1 file, I would delete both - with the Mail.app quit before doing so.
This will require re-indexing all mailboxes once again, but may resolve the problem.

Mysterious forces changing backlight brightness

Some mysterious forces are changing my laptop's brightness and I can't seem to figure it out what it is.
For example, if my battery gets below 10% (also, why 10%?), it automatically changes brightness to something very low.
Similarly, if battery gets fully charged, it changes brightness. It also happens when I plug it into the AC or remove the adapter.
I've looked everywhere, tried changing settings (I really don't remember which ones anymore), but nothing seems to work.
Also, I've xfce4-power-manager installed, but closing it doesn't seem to effect this backlight changing.
Laptop-mode-tools is also set up, but backlight control is disabled.
My only idea is that it's changed by the driver, but how can I control it?

Also, changing backlight to vendor doesn't fix this. Instead it messes up xfce4-power-manager's backlight control.
Forgot to mention, I'm running a simple Openbox installation.

Alright, an update.
The same thing happens even without running X at all. Even the brightness control keyboard hotkeys work without an X server running.
So it seems that they interact directly with hardware and it's not related to software at all. I think it's safe to say that the brightness change events happening on charger plug/unplug are related to this as well.
So if there's nothing in BIOS (I checked) I guess it's not fixable. I could set up an dirty hack using acpi handler scripts although it seems like an awful solution.
Or have you guys any other ideas?

Mailboxes imported from Thunderbird have missing messages

Relatively new to Mac -- not a month, yet. After discovering that Mail has two of the features I've long wanted in Thunderbird -- signatures and selective quoting -- I decided to make Mail my email client. I am able to send and receive mail, however, all but a few of my mailboxes imported from Thunderbird are missing significant numbers of messages. This is surprising because I thought both Mail and Thunderbird used the mbox format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have to say I'm more than a little disappointed in the technical support I got on this. The first individual I spoke to had no solution. He said he'd research the issue, and possibly consult with a Mail specialist. Five minutes later I got a call back and was told Apple doesn't support Thunderbird.
When I explained that I was asking for support with Mail, and that Mail explicitly provides for importing from Thunderbird, all I got was, "Sorry, we can't help you." Not what I expected form Apple.

I got help solving this problem from a little application that cleans up Eudora and Thunderbird mailboxes and the automatically imports them into Mail.
Very nifty application. You just drag your mailboxes -- your complete mailbox folder if you want -- on to the application's icon and it takes it from there. That is literally all there is to it.

Mailbox Import Request Looping Transient Error

Created a Mailbox Import Request with the following command:
New-MailboxImportRequest -BatchName "Import3" -Mailbox "JCool" -BadItemLimit 50 -LargeItemLimit 50 -FilePath "\\EX1\Export\1\Stage_1_2\JCool.pst"
The limits for my send and receive connectors are set to 50MB. But I included the LargeItemLimit paramter in my command because I don't care to import messages larger than that. My hopes were that it would just skip over the items.
My import gets to the point where it hits a large attachment and then the following happens:

[SOLVED] Mailbox import requests stuck in 'queued' state

We have a small Exchange 2013 environment with one server having all roles. I try to import archive mailboxes from an Exchange 2010 environment. It has worked quite well for a while. However, all import requests are now 'stuck' in 'queued' state. Restart
of Replication service, transport service and even server reboot didn't help.
When I run
get-mailboximportrequest | Get-MailboxImportRequestStatistics -Includereport | fl
I observe that PositionInQueue value tells me that there are 85 import requests waiting :

CompletedRequestAgeLimit               : 30.00:00:00
PositionInQueue                        : 85/90 (Position/Queue Length)

There should be no requests waiting as I removed all requests in advance before I issued new import requests:
get-mailboximportrequest | Remove-MailboxImportRequest
How can I really reset an import queue by zeroing PositionInQueue ?

Mail crashing on mailbox import...

Hey All,
I just switched to a new user on my mac 'cause the old one was buggy. So I transferred all my mail info from the one account to the other. When I open mail (in the new account) it recognizes that there are mailboxes and asks to import. I click continue and while trying to import it crashes. I've tried all the tricks I know, trashing prefs and so on. Not sure what the problem is. Any help would be awesome! Here is the crash log:

Thanks... my lack of common sense never ceases to amaze me. When leopard installed mail.app, it did so to the main /Application folder. However, under Tiger, I had moved it to the subfolder Internet (which groups all my i-net apps). I replaced the Tiger version under Internet with the Leopard version and, viola, no error.
Amazing what happens when I run the correct version of the app, huh?

Workaround for IMAP mailbox import bug.

The Import function in Mail doesn't work properly with mailboxes created using an IMAP account. It will refuse to import them. After some fiddling, I discovered that's its the mailbox's file extension that chokes the Import function. It expects ".mbox", and IMAP mailboxes have ".imapmbox". The workaround is to manually change the extension on them to ".mbox", and then Import will be able to read them.

Huge mailbox imports - but cannot split into smaller mailboxes

Hi .. transferred all my mailboxes from Outlook Express on a G4 to Mail.app on a new Itel iMac ...
Then I read about Mail 'choking' on large Mailboxes ... when I got the message 'has not been downloaded from the server, you need to take this account online in order to download it.'
Mai.app doesn't seem too bad with me at all having a lot of messages.
In one of my two main accounts I have 2766 messages in my inbox and they all display fine, but I have already transferred 71 from 2003 into a newly created folder to start and split the messges up .. even the SENT folder for that account has 4854 messages and they display fine without the 'has not been downloaded' error...
HOWEVER, in my second main account I have 8881 in the inbox from my import from the other machine ...and it is choking and won't display the messages.
My question is this: I have created five new folders 2001 /2002 etc. and have tried dragging the messages from those years into the newly created folders to help things along - but Mail.app won't let me - it gives me the error " messages could not be moved to the mailbox “AQ PUBLISHING INBOX 2001 — On My Mac” .. and this is whether I try to drag one or ten or 500 messges.
I thought about dragging them into the individual boxes from the Library.. but on double clicking on the messages to display them they are not in any order at all ... 13456emix from 2001 and 13457emix from 2006 etc.
How can I proceed to continue to use Mail.app and seperate these messages from my one account which is having a problem - my other account after all DID let me move 71 messages into a new folder....

Hi Ernie .. thanks for sticking with this ..... I have spent about the last 16 hours looking up and experimenting about this problem and I'm ready for bed soon .. but I think we are starting to pin things down and I've got some observations that other people who have had a similar problem have not mentioned on the internet until now.
First of all the 'has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.' problem is not new... it has been part of Mail.app / Max OSX for at least three years.. there's never been a fix as far as I can see...
I have completed what you told me to do .. and I already did it this morning too after reading elsewhere about possible 'fixes' ...... the Mailboxes rebuilt as you would expect .. but everything in the largest mailbox remains: 'has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.'.
If I go into users/library/mail/POP-dirk.vanderwerff@*********.com, all the messages are there .. and I just double cklick them and they all display wonderfully........
SOMETIMES ... If I open Mail and thgen immediately open the top message in the mailbox I'm having problems with, the messsage displays .. I have to be quick, because even though I have message checking to 'Manual', Mail.app downloads / attempts to download messages from the server .. it says in the activity Viewer 'Routing Messages / Evaluating Messages / Getting Messages'.

Mysterious Photos want import

I have iPhoto 6.0.6 and am having an issue upon opening the application. I recently imported some photos off my Canon A530 and now when I launch iPhoto it says "49 photos were found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported. Would you like to import them?"
If I select YES, it begins to import them but crashes halfway and I have to force quit the app. If I select NO the library loads normally and the photos it says haven't been imported are there in the library.
Something is obviously not right. Where are these photos and how can I stop this annoying message every time I launch iPhoto. I need to get this straight b/f installing iLife 08'.

Use the Finder to look just inside your iPhoto Library folder. If you see a folder called "Importing" or "Import" then drag it out to your Desktop. Launch iPhoto and see if those photos are still in the library. If the Importing folder contains anything you need then you can import into iPhoto.
If you don't find an Importing folder then don't worry - it shouldn't be in there. Be careful when looking in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. Don't make any changes to the items in there or you can damage the library.
It might also help before upgrading to do a database rebuild. Hold Command and Option while launching iPhoto. Select all 4 options in the dialog, then rebuild. For more info about the rebuild, read this Apple article.

Attachments problems with eudora mailbox imported to apple mail.

i am considering moving from eudora to apple mail. i've done a test of importing one of the eudora mailboxes and am having a problem with the attachments.
the attachments to the messages in the eudora mailbox appear to be recognized by the apple mailtool. however, apple will not display the attachments. my test is with a mailbox i keep messages from a friend who travels a lot and sends me jpegs of his trips. the import gave no error messages.
after the import, i can see all the message are in the new mailbox. i can open them fine. however, when viewing messages in apple mail that had attachments, mail shows the message and also shows a list of the pics attached, but it doesn't display the jpgs.
"This message has the following attachments:
.../Library/Mail/Attachments/xxx.jpg, etc..."
i can go to the attachment directory and find the jpegs there. they open fine in preview... but there seems to be no way to view or double click the filename to open it.
i've searched the local help and this forum and haven't found this thread yet...
does anyone have any experience with importing email with attachments?
is there some setting i need to change in mail to display the attachments or open them?
i appreciate any suggestions or pointers to the solution if somewhere on web...

this software seems to bypass apple's "import" and does it's own method of getting the mail files into apple's mailtool... in addition to allowing apple's mail to display the attachments (jpgs, pdfs, etc) this also looks like it preserved the message status... the read messages are marked "read" instead of "unread" also...
i wonder if there is a way to transfer them back, if i decide to go back to eudora after trying apple's mail... my next quest... i will be very flexible to try apple's mail if it is not a 1 way journey, since i'm looking for some solutions in apple's mail... thanks for reading-

Mystery quaratined mailbox

Hi folks,
I have some kind of mailbox corruption in my Exchange 2013 mailbox database that is causing Exchange to hang every day for the last couple of days. The problem is I can’t figure out which mailbox
is involved.
I get following sequence of errors:
MSEchangeIS Information 1015
The mailbox with mailboxguid "14b36edb-51b8-4159-a506-735895f6c8eb" has been unquarantined. Access to this mailbox has been restored.
Then these next two are repeated three times
MSExchangeIS Error 1013

The problem is that my users get disconnected from Exchange every time this happens and are locked out for the duration of the sequence—about two or three minutes. I know this isn't such a
big deal, but I have users who get very nervous whenever anything unusual happens with email.
I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find any reference to the mailbox GUID mentioned except in the quarantined mailbox record in the registry. I’ve tried finding the GUID using get-mailbox |
list and some other cmdlets in PowerShell as recommended in Tony Redmond’s ‘Microsoft Exchange Server 2013: Mailbox and High Availability’ book and tried some other things I found in a Technet blog about searching Active Directory but so far nothing has turned
up.
I have a feeling that this might have something to do with a calendar in a public folder, but I can’t be certain.

Mailbox Permissions Exchange 2010 forcing mailbox on outlook profile.

Hi,
We currently have a user that uses outlook 2010, along with exchange 2010. He currently uses two mail profiles on his outlook.
Profile 1 & Profile 2.
Profile 1 consists of his primary inbox. Profile 2 consists of a few shared mailboxes, along with 3 staff members.
When we add full permissions to the user to another 3 mailboxes 2010 makes this automatically appear for the user, casuing it to show on profile 1. Is there a way to stop this auto mapping and only add them to the second mailbox?

Apple Mail can't import mailboxes after switch to new Mac

I just purchased a new iMac (running Yosemite 10.10.2) and imported the Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro (running Mavericks 10.9.5).
When attempting to launch Mail I am forced to import all mailboxes, there doesn't seem to be any way of skipping this step. In the second mailbox (Googlemail IMAP account) I can import 98% of the over 38,000 emails yet import stops at the same place every time. There seems to be something wrong with the file from which Mail is importing.
Is there any way to force Mail to skip this mailbox? Or replace the file Mail is attempting to import from?

Import POP mailboxes

I am running OS 10.7 Lion on a 2011 MacBook Pro.
On a Mac Pro, in the Mail.app, I have a POP account in which I have made many nested folders. I would like to set up the same POP account on the 2011 MacBook Pro. But, I do not know how I can import these nested folders from the Mac Pro into the new POP account on the 2011 MacBook Pro.
Please advise.

When the importing process was completed, the imported mailboxes showed up in ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/Import.mbox
Now, let me cite the following example within the Import.mbox.
Prior to the import, I had a mailbox named publishers. And, within the publishers mailbox, I had several subfolders such as Pearson, Wiley, etc. There were no subfolders within Pearson, Wiley, etc.
In the Import.mbox/publishers/Pearson, I was expecting to see the messages that I had saved. Instead, the import process has created a subfolder called Messages.mbox within the Pearson folder. So, instead of seeing the original messages in the Pearson folder, I now see them in Import.mbox/publishers/Pearson/Messages.mbox.
This is driving me crazy. Is there a way to force the import process to import the original messages into their original folders?
