Mystery HDD usage

hello all,
I haev an old Powermac G4/533 that i use as a file server, and it also does some light local stuff ( runs scanner etc.)
Has 10.3.latest on it.
Two internal HDDs - 40 GB main; 80 GB backup. Plus an external FW 2 TB that is used as a NFS.
Here's the issue: If i "get info" on the main drive it shows 35/40 GB used. But if i open it up and count up all the major folders, there's maybe 15 GB of stuff on it. /Users, for instance is only about 5GB.
I even made invisible files visible and saw the same thing.
Any idea what's going on? 20 GB of mystery files - or misleding index entries - exist somewhere.

Well, i did a lot of digging, and there are some mysterious differences. I'm using "du" as the final word. unfortunately that approach makes me plow through voluminus stuff, so i dont have an answer as to what it was per se. But even on normally working machines i am seeing differences betwene what du says, what get info says, and what i can add up, even lookign at "hidden" folders.
But nothing like that G4. Difference on my MBP for example is about 8%. See the delta below! (>> 100%)
So i wiped the G4 main drive (after cloning of course). And reinstalled from scratch, replacing all apps, drivers, docs, desktop crap, etc. Some weeding, but nothing of any size.
Old vs. new, same documents, music, apps (for the most part) etc.
Old: ~35GB used
New `13.346GB used
10.2 clean - 2.7 GB
10.3 clean - 5.7GB
Running faster, smaller.
Wish i knew what was going on, but it was something wrong and major (in terms of storage efficiency).....

Mysterious Data Usage

Hello,
My wife owns an HTC Thunderbolt. We are experiencing mysterious data usage.
The data log shows data usage during hours and at times when the phone is not being used. We have tried closing all apps and resetting the phone.
Still, these nickel and dime data used entries are adding up fast and bring us to the brink of our our plan which we have already extended.
We do not stream video, we do not listen to Pandora.... The phone is used strictly for texts, emails, and phone calls.
Any advice? Thank you for your help.

I've deleted the email accounts and re-added them to see if there was a looping email send issue that I've read about.
Funny though, when I review the data use on the phone, "photo" is the app indicating using the most data. So I've turned off and uninstalled everything I can think is tied to that.

GE60 ONC - HDD scratching all the time but HDD usage near 0%!

Hello to all!
I recently bought an MSI GE60 ONC.
I started the computer by running Windows 8 OEM. Then my nightmare began.
1/ Waited almost 2 hours to DL Windows Update (60 upgrades found)
2/ Extremely HIGH HDD usage was encountered 100% when using WU...
3/ After all updates where done HDD usage at 0% down to 100% so I tought the problem was solved.
4/ Now when starting my computer the HDD usage seems ok BUT my HDD is still scratching all the time as if he was working... I'm sitting on the desktop doing nothing but the HDD is always working.
And now I heard a litle weird noise every 5 min.

and yes HDDs are not much fastern and they N1 units which slow down systems.

Can anyone explain what the other section section in the HDD usage description is for ? I recently used iphoto to send a mail and this "other "section inrease the usage by about 1GB....any ideas why ?

All of your 'stuff' that is not Music Movies Apps Backups or Photos is in Other, that means all your emails, all your files etc, why don't you just leave well enough alone, this is not windows and doesn't need tinkering with,

Ntoskrnl - 20MB/s HDD Usage

My MSi GE60 was recently RMA'd to fix the problem of the laptop not starting up but was turning on. Issue was there was no HDD activity, but fan was spinning HDD was spinning, screen was just black forever
With the laptop coming back and is "working", I'm having serious issue with a few programs constantly having my HDD at 100% usage...

Seems to be the main culprit with AVG being less of the main culprit after removing of the crappy Norton stuff the repairer at MSi put on after they wiped stuffed.......
Currently I've managed to get it to stay down around 50-70% HDD usage with the removal of some Norton stuff, but there is still Norton PC Check remaining which is impossible to remove.... Although system still remains at a 20MB/s to 30MB/S read/usage.
Anywhere from here?

this issue is known to be a windows 8/8.1 bug make sure you done every windows updates to patch this bug to see if it stops if not try doing a chkdsk C: /R and then type Y and reboot your laptop that will then do a check disk for anny corrupt files by windows that might of caused a process to hang up by making hdd 100% and so on.

HDD usage report & utilization

after normal boot and setup of TimeMachine which went fine, my computer started to become sluggish. It's reading the HDD constantly slowing down everything.
I've quit all apps, rebooted, it keeps doing so.
I can look at the process, And I can see some busy, but CPU usage is just normal and prety low. I have no idea what's causing that, but it has been so for hours now.
My MacBook Pro has just become unusable. I can't see what to do to even guess what's at work here.
Moreover, I had report of full HDD where I knew I had at 20Gb free. Where there a lot of writing at some point? probably but not to the point to fill up the HDD.
I freed up 10 more gigs, and now Finder reports usage of 96Gb (which is way too much: it used to be 70Gb before this thing start). When I count what's on the drive, it just adds up to what I had before, i-e 70Gb.
any help just welcome. I'm totally at loss with what's going on here!

[SOLVED] Arch very slow at boot, high HDD usage

Hi,
After an upgrade today (I don't know exactly what packages I upgraded, but it had been around 2 days between when I did it last), my Arch install has been very slow booting up. There is VERY high hard disk usage while booting, and I get the following messages that I never used to get before:
1 - stalling at running cleanup hook
2 - A start job is running dev-sda2.device (/home)
When it has fully booted up into KDM, any keyboard press and the HDD is paging again and things slow to a crawl. I tried logging in, but 10 minutes in and things were still loading.
I suspect that I might have lost my journal or suffered extreme file system corruption, but I have done nothing of the sort, after the upgrade Arch had a clean shutdown with no out of place messages.
Right now I'm at school, so I won't be able do more debugging, but once I get home, I'll try and do fsck from the live USB.

EDIT: I looked at the systemd wiki, and added noauto,x-systemd.automount to fstab and now instead of saying "A start job is running..." it's now showing: "...recreate volatile files and directories..."; it came and went so fast I didn't have time to read the entire line.

So, after coming back home, I booted up the live USB and did fsck -fpv on both root and /home. After that I was at a loss so I restarted, and everything seems to be working now.
I will mark this thread solved, however if someone knew exactly why this happened and what to do in the future to prevent it, it would be eternally helpful!

760GM-E51 locking up on heavy HDD usage

Everything was running smoothly for quite some time with the WD and Seagate SATA HDDs using IDE emulation (no Hitachi at this point). Over the last month the system has been locking up unexpectedly, no useful error reports in Windows to suggest the cause. The main factor appeared to be transferring large quantities of data between those two drives. So I look arround, found out about the WD issues w.r.t sleeping after only 8 seconds and TLDR, increased the sleep time to 5 minutes, the drive didnt support TLDR so I could not enable it.
For my own personal needs, and to aid the fault-finding I purchased the Hitachi 2tb drive, which I installed last night. Then moved both SATA drives from IDE emulation to AHCI, incase the TLDR difficulties were causing the SATA controller to drop the WD drive unexpectedly if it took too long to respond - which with IDE emulation could cause serious issues. Moved some data between the WD and Seagate (~10gb, which was normally enough to trigger the problem), nothing happened, which was a good sign. I then left the Hitachi drive formatting, and during this time decided to stream a video over the WiFi connection. A few minutes in the video stops, the SAMBA shares are disconnected, and the machine no longer responds to ping. At the machine there is no response to keyboard or mouse, and the HDD activity light is solid red - the lock-ups are still occurring, exactly sa before. I should clarify that at this point if the TFT was not on, switching on the TFT tends to result in a large gray image, at supposedly the correct resolution.
I have run Prime95 for many hours, with seperate instances for all 4 cores (+ correct affinity settings), at both "In-place large FFTs" (max heat & power consumption), and Blend (max ram tested), with no problems. I believe I have also run memtest, but can double-check if necessary. I have also used the machine extensively for numerical simulation with no problems. It would seem that if this was a CPU or power issue there would be other side-effects, and more obvious crashes. I am left stuck with the situation that I believe it is either one of the harddrives behaving badly - and the SATA controller handling this inappropriately, or a chipset issue.
I do have a byte-for-byte copy of the OS, and could install it on the hitachi drive, but frankly something more light-weight might be preferable for this fault-finding exercise. Are my assumptions so far appropriate? How should I proceed? Please advise.

Ofcourse it depends a bit on the instruction, but be sure you will see BSOD's every time you hit that cell.
This does not match my own experience, the experience of others I know who do a fair degree of overclocking (and hence have to avoid these instabilities), or match my understanding of how the average OS works. This makes no sense, I have already explained that Memtest failed, by definition this means that an address in memory returned an incorrect value. According to your reasoning I should already be experiencing BSODs constantly. This is clearly not what is happening. Having said that, the memory returning the wrong value is clearly incorrect behaviour, and even if it were not causing the lock-ups, this is evidence of the system being unstable. Im not sure why you are so forcibly trying to argue with this.

Smart is a dumb as a duck, but for companies useful as when it tells you it's bad it's saver to replace the drive before it does go bad.

Mysterious HDD/SSD Problems

I have a problem, I can't explain:
I have a 2009 unibody MacBook Pro (A1286). I have replaced my optical drive with the original HDD and installed a SSD in the HDD slot. Everything worked fine for half a year. Yesterday I wasn't able to start my Mac. The blinking folder with a question mark showed up. So I started the Mac with the C key and started the disc manager. Only the HDD was displayed. So I put the HDD in the first slot and the SSD in the second slot. The Mac started without any problems from the SSD and the HDD was also displayed in Finder. I could access the data from both the SSD and the HDD. I switched back to the old setup (SSD in slot one and HDD in slot two). When I wanted to start the Mac the blinking question mark folder shows up again. Also the SSD isn't displayed in the Disc Manager. How is that possible?

2009 models are notorious for having bad SATA cables in the HD bay - sounds as if yours simply failed.
And I don't doubt that the SSD wouldn't show up when installed in the optical bay - some SATA connectors for the optibay just won't support a SSD.
I would suggest that you visit www.ifixt.com and search for the Apple part number for your main SATA cable. Armed with the part number you can probably find a replacement cable on eBay.
I'm 99% certain that there's a fault - just now failing - with the SATA cable.

Mystery HDD memory

I was on my finder 2day, and i noticed that my HDD space kept shrinking. I was not downloading nything, but it was shrinking. it went from 70 to 69.16 gb.
Also, i've noticed that my hdd size decreases everyday! how can i stop this and why is this happening. I have a 160 gig macbook. when i got it, it had 140 or something of that sort. i used up 50 gigs worth of memory w/ my personal stuff. This leaves me w/ 90 gigs. what has happened with the rest of the 20 gigs?
Can Onyx fix this?

When you say shrinking, have you lost 20Gig right from the start and that's it, or is it actively and currently shrinking in size while you sit and do nothing?
Unformatted hard drives may have a physical size of Xgb, but when you format them the size becomes X minus a little bit, gb. I'm not up on my hard drives, hopefully a more learned user will read this post and help you out, but I imagine that a lot of space is taken up by the routing table information, and when each block is allocated this must take space? (Someone who understands please help out here)
Either way I know you loose a little bit, though I must say 20Gb seems like a lot. Post an answer to my first question and this may help someone who has a greater knowledge help you out!

Finder showing inaccurate HDD usage - Terminal conflict

We have 6 iMacs (10.5.8) and Mac OS X Server. Two of the iMacs have started showing 'start up disk almost full'. E.g. in the Finder window for one, it states 802MB left. On the same machine I've used Finder to work out where all the memory is being used so I can go ahead and delete stuff - but there is only about 100GB accounted for in total (from 297GB). I ran sudo du -hxd1/ in Terminal which shows that the folder /Users is using 195GB but Finder is telling me that this is only using 4.33GB. So I think I've found where all the memory is but even unhiding reveals nothing I can work on. Users are created via Workgroup Manager on the Server. I believe some of the users may have been deleted on individual machines later but that hasn't deleted their space too.
Any help will be most appreciated!

Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

KDE 4.7: very slow and high disk usage

Since upgrade to KDE 4.7 on my i686 laptop, my system behaves weirdly. I noticed a slow down caused by a very high disk usage: when the HDD spins the cpu usage reported by the CPU monitor plasmoid is very high (~ 50%), while top reports a very small CPU load. Another strange symptom is that, when I try to close the session, the system freezes for about 15 seconds before the logout/shutdown/restart dialog window appears, again with HDD spinning furiously. If I exit the dialog window and then try to close session again it works smoothly, so I think some caching is at work at second try.
This is very painful since it slows down my workflow. Since now I tried to:
- disable nepomuk, strigi and all that using the nepomukcontroller plasmoid
- disable compositing
- delete .kde folder
- uninstall and reinstall all kde packages
without any benefit. On the same laptop I have dual boot with a 64 bit arch installation, which does not have the same problem, nor has it my 64 bit desktop pc.
Does anyone have similar issues? I don't understand what is it that makes the HDD spin so much, nor how to eventually track it down (are there som HDD usage profiling utilities?). Moreover, why top and CPU usage plasmoid report so different CPU usage stats?
I'm very confused, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Although I'm not having any of the issues as Snack, I have found KDE 4.7.0 to be a very horrible release. In fact, I'm sick and tired of the KDE release notes bragging about killing thousands of bugs each release, when in actuality the first few revisions of each stable release are horrible. When I first upgraded, I ran into at least four really nasty bugs. Although I've worked around some of them, it left a really sour taste in my mouth. Here is what I've experienced:
1.) With a new user or fresh install, there is no wallpaper by default, even if I install kde-wallpapers before I log in, it makes no difference.
2.) Sometimes kwin will crash during log out.
3.) Worse yet, if I exit a full screen game, it will more than likely crash Kwin. This is a problem on my laptop (which has intel video) and not my desktop (which has nvidia video). If I don't remember to disable desktop effects before opening a game, I may run into a problem.
4.) Although my performance is good, it's not great. I would think a laptop with a Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM would run faster than it is.
I have tested XFCE for a bit, and I do like it alot. However, with XFCE I am unable to browse Samba shares, and that is a huge problem. In addition, I find KDE's applications to be much better than what ships with XFCE, but I question whether they're worth the performance hit. I really love Kate, Gwenview, Digikam, and Amarok. I know you can install those in XFCE, but they feel out of place and then my desktop pretty much becomes a mutt. Not only that, but KDE is full featured, whereas XFCE is not. It's like I have to choose between a stable desktop or a desktop with full of bugs.
I hope that KDE 4.7.1 fixes everything, but historically it's usually the 4.x.2 release that really does the trick.

All Windows versions past 7 uses 100% my HDD

Hello, I have an old Lenovo B560 bought in February 2011. I had Windows 7 installed and it used to work well until Windows 8 was released and i couldn't stop myself upgrade my OS. Since then i have troubles with my HDD usage which is 100% most of the time and if i go to task manager ->performance ->disk in use, the average response time is sometimes more than 10000ms. Thats causing serious problems of slowness on my PC. Since then, i've installed Windows 8.1 and WIndows 10. These days i've disabled the service called BITS and my HDD usage is about 10% most of the time, but there are still many situations when my PC become extremely slow due to high HDD usage. Today i've opened task manager and analyze all those proceses and i've discovered about 40 proceses that are related to services. Did any of you had this situation and managed to overpass it?

1. I am not sure about Windows 10 Technical Preview, I wouldn't recommend if you are using on your main machine.
2. Have you installed the latest BIOS and drivers for your B560 when running Windows 8.1? At times, Windows default driver may not work well on some hardware.
