Mystery Message from Time Machine

Can anyone tell me what this message means. I used Disc Utility to repair permissions and ran disc repair because of probelms with my iphoto library hanging up. now I keep getting a message: Time Machine counld not back up: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/John Scott’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
What do I do to sort the problem?

If you have the Time Capsule, first restart your iMac and the Time Capsule. This should solve that problem. If it doesn't work, read > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html
If you have an external disk, disconnect and connect it again

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?"  I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.

This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
    Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

  • How to manually retrieve mail messages from time machine in Lion?

I just did a clean reinstall on Lion and want to import things from time machine piecemeal.  As far as I know, in order to access the mail documents on the computer's hard drive, in the Finder I need to go to Go-->Go to Folder... and then type ~/Library.  Then I have access to the "Mail" folder with the data.  How can I access this folder that's on my external harddrive?  I don't have the "Go" function and I don't know how to get there manually.  My hidden files are shown.

The best way to restore mails is to use Time Machine.
    1. Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk, select the external disk and see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
    2. Open Mail and open Time Machine. Navigate and restore the mails you want

  • Removed account - cannot restore messages from Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I'm using Mail 4.4 on Mac OS 10.6.6. I removed a Mail account today, knowing I could recover all my received messages from the server, but failing to realize that the sent messages were not on the server. On the road, I didn't panic, as I've been using Time Machine for well over a year, and knew all would be well upon my return home.
I returned home, plugged in my Time Machine Backups disk, and Time Machine ran. I then attempted to restore the lost messages, only to find that, in quite Orwellian fashion, Time Machine had retroactively altered all my old Mail folders and had erased any trace (at least as far as I can tell) of the existence of the old account. I cannot find those lost message anywhere, in any backup of Mail, going all the way back.
I've been looking in ~/Library/Mail. Should I be looking elsewhere? I don't think so, because all my current accounts are listed there...along with a new account that I didn't create until today! How could a new account have existed months ago? Answer: It didn't. Something very creepy is going on here.
    Can anyone help???
    Thank you
    Jason

Perhaps it was my late-night, jet-lagged delirium, but for whatever reason, I was able to restore the messages today using the application-specific Time Machine recover tool: made Mail the current application, then ran Time Machine. The messages were there, just as they should have been. (I swear they weren't there last night...)
My apologies if any of you spent any time on this.
    Best,
    Jason

  • Recovering Mail messages from Time Machine drive

I recently deleted some important Mail messages do to my iPhone and iMac Mail sync via the Cloud. The messages are likely (for sure) on my Time Machine drive, but I don't know a simple way to find them. Right now enter Time Machine and can go User> Me> Library> Mail and the into the inbox of the related Mail account and then I am arbitrarily looking in subfolders with # labels, and seeing lists of xml (or whatever they are) files. The are in no order, and when I open them I find messages willy nilly from past dates.
Is there an easy way to actually find these messages, to search or read the messages in the Time Machine drive to recover specific ones. The method I describe above is simply not workable.
    Thanks.

Note that you have to open the Time Machine app while you are using the Mail window. If not, a Finder window will pop up and it will not work. After opening the Time Machine app, you should see a screen like this one:
Then, use the arrows to navigate through your backups, and when you have found the mails you want to restore, select them with the Command key and press "Restore". Note that OS X is in Spanish in my computer, but you should see the text in English.

    Hi Norm,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    (Repair both Drives)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Error message from Time Machine : "Disk Image ... is already used"

Time Machine was working well till today. I receive an error message saying that the disk image «Volumes/Time Capsule/ ... sparsebundle» is already used.

It just means Mountain Lion is so stupid it cannot remember its own name.. let alone the TC or when it last connected..
Reboot the network to give it a swift kick.. restart in correct order.. modem .. router/TC... clients.. 2min gap.

  • Mail gets stuck importing messages from Time Machine when setting up new Lion Macbook Pro

I just used time machine to set up my new 13-in mid-2012 Macbook Pro and am having trouble setting up the Mail application. It opens fine, asks me to import my messages, takes about an hour and a half, then gets stuck at "less than a minute." I then have to cancel out, and restarting causes the whole process to start over.
I've tried deleting the Envelope Index, but that didn't help. I also tried restarting the computer. Hitting "Cancel" instead of "Continue" to try to set up Mail without importing my messages just exits the application.
Any ideas why it hangs at the very end, and how I can avoid this?

Did anyone find a solution here?
This has happened to me after numerous crashes over the years and just did again. Seems to be a recurring problem when dealing with lots of mail messages.
Today, after 3 attempts, it still hangs up on 50,951 of 166,972 (yes there are a lot and for a reason).

  • I get a message from Time Machine ""/Volumes/Data/Don's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is aready in use.   Please tell me what this means and what I should do because of it.

I get a message in a box on my desk top saying "/Volumes'/Data/Don's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is alreadyin use.  What does this mean, and what should I do because of it if anything?

You should do a restart. That often fixes such problems.
    AND You should tell:
    System preferences > Spotlight > Privacy ...
not to index the backup drive (it does a special index already).
Does that message mean you are NOT keeping your backups on a separate drive? Backuops should be on a drive with nothing else.

  • Why I cannot assess deleted Apple mail messages in time machine after installing mountain lion from snow leopard.

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, I cannot retrieve my deleted Apple mail messages from Time Machine.  I could do it in the past using Snow Leopard.  The effective date for the the non-retrival of deleted messages is the date I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard.  Any thoughts?

I'm still not sure what you mean . . . is it listed in the "On My Mac" section in Mail's sidebar, like these?
Mountain Lion appears to have given it an icon very much like an Archive box and put the "on My Mac" folder within that "Box" on both the back ups and the new Mail program - in fact it did it 6 times, which was the origional problem.
    Can you post a screenshot?
I could restore inbox messages although they came in as a new mail box called Time Machine rather than into their origional mailboxes (there are 7 different addresses)
Yes, that's how Time Machine restores Mail messages, so it doesn't erase the current contents of an existing mailbox.  You can then move them into the desired location.

  • Can't restore from Time Machine backup error message

My hard drive on my Macbook failed a few days ago. Just makes a clanking noise and won't boot up etc... I installed a new drive, formatted it, and selected restore from Time Machine backup from the installer screen. It started restoring from my backup I had on an external drive and everything was fine untill it got about 6% done then get a message that says "An error occured when restoring from the backup" It is pretty non descriptive. It also says please restart your system and try again or something to that effect. I tried again, same problem.  When I try to copy files over manually I eventually gets some error that says there is a problem with a file and it will quit. Any ideas on how to get my data? I can see all my files on there, but can't get them. My backup disc is just used for backup on this one machine nothing else, so it shouldn't have a problem. Help!

Good to hear MA is doing something!

I had to restore my iMac from Time Machine. After the restoration all programs are functioning except my Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. When I start any program in the suite the error message, "Licensing for this product has stopped working." I restarted the computer and tried again to run Photoshop and the same error message appeared. The message was followed by a message that stated that I needed to contact Adobe technical support and mention Error: 150.30. I need Adobe technical support to provide me a solution for my problem so I can continue using my Adobe products installed on my computer.

Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.
