Mystery Mirror DMG File

Alerted by a warning that my 45 gig hard drive was nearly full, I used WhatSize (thanks to a posted suggestion to another inquiry) and discovered that there was a 13.5 gig DMG file in USERS>MY NAME>LIBRARY>MIRRORS>WEIRD NUMERIC NAME folder.
There were a few small files in this folder with strange numeric names, but the large DMG file had my .MAC account name - MYDOCMACNAME.DMG I have no idea how or why this file was created.
13.5 gig is approximate the total of the free space I had last time I looked, which I believe was also after the creation date of all these files on the same day in May.
Further confusing was that the Modified date showed a date and time in the future. I've deleted the entire numeric name sub folder to Mirrors, regained the space on my hard drive and the system seems stable.
Can anyone suggest what action might have created this DMG file or the sub folder in the MIRRORS folder which had the numeric name? (I do not have any software like SuperDuper on my machine, but I do backup to .MAC using Apple Backup.)

So is it OK to delete this Mirror Image file? Will iDisk sync be affected if one deletes it?
Or even better, is it possible to point this file in another direction? I want to back up my Library using BackUp but this single Mirrors folder makes the Library abnormal in size and therefore not manageable from a back up to .mac `perspective

Huge .dmg File in Library

I've got a .dmg file, same name as my .mac account name, sitting in my users/library/mirrors/001b639659db folder: patrickfifth.dmg
It is 20GB in size! I tried to throw it away and it says it is in use.
Any idea what this is and why it showed up?

That would be because you have turned on mirroring for your iDisk. Open your .Mac preferences in System Preferences, click on the iDisk tab and turn off mirroring the iDisk. If the mirrored file doesn't get deleted automatically you can safely delete it after you've turned off iDisk mirroring.

.dmg file is using 20+ gigs!!

I am trying to figure out what is using up so much space on my had drive. Getting info on files and so on. Not to bore you, but my user folder was 32 gigs, in ti, my apple folder 31.5, in ther the library folder 25.5, in there the mirror folder is 23, and in the mirror folder is a .dmg file at 20+ gigs! Can you tell me is this something I need? Thank you so much for any assistance. ( I store all of my photos, music and data on an external hard drive).

A dmg file is a "disk image" file. It may be a file downloaded from the internet or one created by Disk Utility. Before deleting it, find out what's on it by "mounting" the image file (double-click the file to open it and it will display as a disk in the finder). Once you have determined what is in the file, then decide whether to delete it, copy it to a cd/dvd, or keep it on the hd.

Need help booting from DMG file without DVD drive

okay so i have 6 computers with me right now. i need to use one that has a dvd drive to install it on a comp that doesnt via firewire.
1- macbook with superdrive and os 10.5 (cant even open tiger install because its a new macbook
2-iBook g4 with DVD drive BUT the firewire port is broken
3-iBook g3 (one that needs tiger but only has a cd drive)
4-ibook g3 (without dvd drive)
5-powerbook g4 with dvd drive and firewire (for some reason will not read the tiger discs i just burned, even though ive already used them on the ibook g4
6-mac pro with firewire and dvd drive, but the dvd drive is broken.
so seems to me, every computer i have has a weakness for exactly what i need. what i need to know now is if i can boot the powerbook g4 from a DMG file of tiger install disc 1 and install is to the target ibook through firewire. if you have any suggestions on what i should try with the supplies mentioned above, please inform me. thanks!

You can't unless the PowerBook is running Mac OS X Server, in which case the NetInstall feature can be used.

The difference between a .dmg file & a .cdr file (using Disk Utility) ?

Hi,
In particular, I created both from a DVD using Disk Utility.
When I chose "read only" a .dmg was created.
When I chose "DVD/CD Master" a .cdr was created.
They are exactly the same size.
Is there any difference ?

From Wikipedia: A file with the extension .dmg (an abbreviation for disk image) uses a disk image format commonly found on Mac OS X. The format allows secure password protection as well as file compression and hence serves both security and file distribution functions. The dmg files have downloaded to the wrong folder - not finished with the install process

The dmg files have downloaded to the wrong folder - I am at the part of the download/install process where the "Welcome" screen appears asking for me to agree to the license agreement. Somewhere on your site, I read that they should NOT go to the applications folder but to the "Users" folder. Can/should I move/drag the folder with the dmg files into the "Users" folder"? If so, before or after I complete the install? I am running MAC OSX 10.7.4 on a MAC Mini.
Also, when the trial period is over, I will use the license number for the purchased software disks, should the dmg's/folders then be moved to the application folder or stay in the "users" section? I have Purvhased Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Adobe Premiere Elements 10, but somewhere on your site it was suggested to download them instead and use the license code at the appropiate time. If someone can help with these questions, I would appreciate it. Thank you

Hi,
In the Welcome screen, you can accept the license agreement and can go ahead with the installation. You will be asked for the serial number. If you don't have one, install it as a trial application. By default, it's installed in the Applications folder. However, you can change the installation folder in the third screen, if you have a reason. Please see the screenshot below:
After installing, you can't move application to a different directory by dragging. You need to uninstall and install it again in the folder of your choice.

I am having trouble with replacing my old Firefox version 3.6.3 with the new 9.0 version on my Macbook. I have it downloaded as a dmg file, but I keep getting a message that the opertion cannot be completed because the item Firefox is in use...HELP!

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Files disappearing from mounted .DMG files

Hi, I've had this issue occur a few times in Tiger and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there's a known workaround. Sometimes, when browsing a disk image, or, less commonly, a physical disc like a CD, files in the Finder will seem to disappear from the image/disk when clicked on. First the filenames will go, then the files themselves, and evidently those files then become unreadable in general as applications can't access them. I don't get any error messages; it's just like the filesystem on that disk eats itself away and vanishes. I can unmount the disk without any issue.
I'm having this problem right now with any disk image I mount on my XServe -- it goes through the "Verify" step just fine, shows up on my desktop, I can browse and even open files, but inevitably within a very short period of time the above occurs, and it becomes useless. I KNOW it can't be the .dmg file that's the problem, because if I share the .dmg over Personal File Sharing and mount it from another Mac, this problem does NOT occur. It's just on the one Mac hosting the files. Any idea what this could mean, and what could solve it?
Also, I know a lot of times a restart will cure this weird little glitches, but I would really like a solution, if you know what I mean... particularly on a server, I cannot afford to restart whenever I have a problem.

Sounds like you have run into a very strange, and unfortunately no uncommon, bug involving file systems from either servers or FAT 32 mounted external drives. See this discussion:

I am trying to upgrade iPhoto 9.4.2 to 9.4.3 on a Mac Mini with Mountain Lion. When I run the iPhoto9.4.3Update.dmg file, I get the alert:
The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available.
When I close the alert, it shuts down the update.
Since at our location our only option to get on the internet is via a 3G modem with a data cap of 5 GB per month, we take a laptop into the local library, hop on their wifi, and download dmg files for large upgrades like iPhoto (in this case, 766 MB). This has always worked before - what is different here?
Since we were near the end of our data month and still had a GB left, I then tried the software update route from the Apple menu on the Mac mini. It started downloading the 9.4.3 update which was only 177 MB. 2 hours later it had just finished the download and suddenly continued onto another download (still in the iPhoto upgrade) of a 1.2 GB file. So I aborted. So my 2nd question is what was happening here.
And my 3rd question is what to do next?

Evidently there was more than one update listed for your Mini. Next time launch the App Store app in your Applications folder and log in with the Apple ID used to purchase your Mini. Click on the Updates folder and look for available updates. There you can select one at a time for installation.
Look in the Download folder in your Home folder to see if the 9.4.3 update is there.

I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.

Select the .dmg file and double-click it. FWIW, there's no DiskImage thing in Utilities on any of my boot volumes.

Select your hard drive in the Finder and choose File -> Get Info. What is the available space?

Where did you get this "dmg file"? To install the newest version of any Apple software, including iTunes, all you have to do is use Software Update from the Apple menu. This doesn't download any dmg, it automatically installs the software for you.
Maybe try repairing your permissions from Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder).
Also - What version of OS X do you have? Please update your forum profile so we can help you better.

so i dont know if i would be spanked or something but i downloaded a windows xp sp3 from the internet through torrent
it was originally an iso file so i changed it to a dmg by using disk utility
now heres the problem:
after that, i opened the dmg file image and mounted the virtual drive
then when i started up the boot camp installation and clicked the "Start Installation" after about fifteen seconds it said that it couldn't find any disk installers!

it would be awesome if someone could help me
and this other question that i did not mention above is:
when you run windows xp on Parallels, is it slower than when you use windows on a PC or through boot camp?

The BootCamp Assistant requires Windows to be on a bootable CD/DVD and will not work with any kind of images, iso or dmg.

Yes, since it is not running 'natively' , using the real hardware, but it is running on a virtualized environment.
How much slower really depends on the kind of programs you use in Windows, with typical Business/Office programs you might not even notice any slower performance, but with programs that depend on having access to the 'real' hardware, you will notice the slowness often right down to be un-useable.
