Mystery Podcasts Keep Showing Up in Smart Playlists

I use Smart Playlists to listen to Podcasts on my iPod Shuffles. It worked fine literally for years, but recently something changed.
Now when I make a Smart Playlist (I enter "Media Kind is Podcast")I get all my newly downloaded Podcasts, but I also get a list of about 50 podcasts that I deleted a long time ago. They are marked in the Smart Playlist as unavailable - iTunes says that it doesn't know where these Podcasts are located.
The problem is that they really don't exist at all. The original files are gone. They don't show up in Itunes (of course). They are also nowhere on my computer. I've done manual searches - looking through hundreds of folders where they might be located. I've also used the Windows Explorer Search feature to try to locate these files. They simply aren't anywhere on any of my hard drives. Therefore, I can't tell iTunes where they are located and I can't delete them. I can't delete them because they have already been deleted.
Yet, there is a reference to them in my iTunes library database file. There must be, or why would they keep showing up in a Smart Playlist? This is a real problem for me because it means I can't use Smart Playlists for my podcasts anymore.
Can anyone suggest a way to remove these podcast filenams from the iTunes database?
Thanks!
Doug

Hi, Katrina.
I just wanted to report back on what happened.
I created a new Smart Playlist with the parameters "Media Kind is Podcast", and just like always, I got a list of all my curent podcasts plus about fifty or so of these phantom podcasts.
I selected one of these phantom podcasts and tried Alt-Delete, but that didn't do anything. Just hitting Delete didn't do anything either. Nor did Ctrl-Delete. However, Shift-Delete worked like a charm. I got this message:
"Are you sure you want to remove the selected podcast from your iTunes library? This podcast will also be removed from any iPod or iPhone which synchronizes with your iTunes library."
I clicked on the "Remove" button (my options were "Remove" and "Cancel"). The podcast name vanished from the playlist and apparently it was also removed from the library database, because when I created another podcast Smart Playlist, that phantom podcast did not reappear.
I then went through the entire Smart Playlist and selected all of the phantom podcasts. I hit shift-delete, clicked on "Remove" and they all vanished and none of them returned. My Smart Playlists are back to normal and the problem is gone.
Apparently, Shift-Delete is the command for deleting podcasts (and songs, I assume) directly from a playlist. This works even if the orignal file has already been deleted and the listing is just a phantom listing in the database.
Whether Shift-Delete to delete directly from a playlist works on all computers, I don't know. It certainly worked on mine, which is a PC.
Thanks again, Katrina!

  • Phantom songs showing up in smart playlists

When creating a smart playlist for a podcast recently, i noticed two songs showed up with that icon that says the file can't be found. I want to get rid of them, but I can't figure out where they are in my library. Apparently itunes still has these records in my library... somewhere, but the only place they show up is by matching the smart playlist search. Normal search, as in through the search box, doesn't turn them up.
Has anyone else had this happen? I would really like to "delete" these records, if for the sake of cleanliness than anything, but I can't find them except in the smart playlist, and you cannot delete through playlists, as far as I know.

    Hi,
I'm not sure about the odd files showing in Smart playlist and not in the library issue, but you can delete songs from the library via a playlist - just hold the alt (option) key and Delete key

  • How do I add specific podcasts to the Recently Added Smart Playlist?

    Well,
I guess the question is very self-explanatory, still; I subscribe to several podcast, most of them are news and I have a couple of them that are music that I'd like to add to the Recently Added Smart Playlist.
By default the this playlist has the criteria Media Kind is not Podcast, so when I specify a podcast it'll not appear and if I remove this criteria, all the podcasts will appear which of course I don't want. I could just specify every single podcast I don't want but the problem would be that I'd have to keep editing the playlist everytime I subscribe to a new one; a thing I don't feel very comfortable with.
I tried using subcriteria but the Media Kind is not Podcast just overrules everything I add afterwards.
I'll really appreciate any help you can give me. I'm attaching a screenshot with the lastest config I put in–which doesn't work–so you can give yourselves an idea of what I'm doing.

It is a mixed playlist and finally I came up with an answer; it might sound strange but I woke up from a nap with all correct settings figured out.
    This is what I did:
I had to specify a subset for every podcast or I would end up with every episode available on my library which in turn would reach the limit I set but that's OK. I noticed though, that podcast won't sync to iTunes Match, which is a bummer, but still they sync over Wi-Fi. This is what I got finally:
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Deleted podcasts keep showing up in front row

So I have older podcasts which have long since been deleted from my computer that show up in front row and my xbox 360 through connect 360. When I search my computer for the files, they are no where to be found. It's very annoying cause it adds numerous artists and files which aren't even on my computer. When I go to play them it says your computer does not have permission to play this. Are these podcasts cached somewhere on my hard drive? Is there a way to get rid of this? please help me! I've also re-installed osx to try and fix it but somehow they are still there!

I am having the same issue. Although, my deleted podcasts are showing up under Movies instead of Video Podcasts.

  • The new "unplayed" tab under Podcasts keeps showing episodes I've deleted

It seems that every time I remove a podcast episode from my computer, if I go into the "Unplayed" tab and hit refresh the same episode reappears as an undownloaded episode (with  a "cloud" icon next to it). Usually I can make the undownloaded episode go away for good by just deleting it from the tab, but that's annoying. Once I remove the actual podcast file (and yes, I'm using iTunes to remove the file), it should not show up again under "Unplayed". Also, there's one podcast in particular that for some reason periodically displays EVERY episode I've deleted as undownloaded episodes in the "Unplayed" tab. This is the most frustrating part. There are 36 episodes of this podcast that I downloaded once and then deleted, but they keep popping up under "Unplayed" as undownloaded episodes no matter how many times I delete them. No other podcast does this. It's bizarre.

I am in a similar boat and can't seem to find an answer searching through discussions. About 3 months ago one of my podcasts NPR: This American Life started acting all strange on my iPod. I had it all set correctly and worked fine for nearly a year. Then the podcast episodes wouldn't automatically load onto my video iPod. They are not in my Podcast section on the iPod. On iTunes it works fine - no problems. When I try to transfer the podcasts over manually in their NPR: TML folder it shows it transferring but when I disconnect they are not there. If anyone knows or has an idea please post. I have made a Playlist for this podcast but episodes mysteriously disappear after a week or so with no consistency. Weird! Thanks.

  • Can a TV show play in smart playlists on iPod?

I have a 80G iPod Classic. Apple released a free song video from Ryan Adams as a TV show. I like the song and would like it to play in my smart list music rotation. The TV show syncs to the iPod, and I can play it manually (I do have sync settings to transfer 'all' TV shows).
When I look through the iPod content on my Mac, the song shows in the playlist, but it does not show up in those exact same playlists on the iPod, only in the TV show list. It will come up in the normal rotation on the Mac.
This is a very minor annoyance, but am wondering if I have missed something in the settings or if this is just something that the iPod sees differently than the Mac and is not possible to accomplish.

Duh, just change the format to music video. Just found out this was unanswered while checking out another post.

  • Podcasts & Music not mixing in Smart Playlists. Only music is played.

First- this is not the Podcast order problem. I mix my music in with a couple of podcasts- KCRW song of the day and The Onion, a 1 minute funny spoof newscast. I like to listen to a mix of music and these short podcasts.
Since the early days, I have been doing this. It works just fine on my old iPod Photo. However, it does not work on my Nano (3rd gen) and iPod Touch (2nd gen, 3.1.3 update).
I have set Podcasts to sync in iTunes in the profile of the Touch, and if I click the down arrow in iTunes on the iPod, and display my playlist, it shows the Podcasts all visible on my iPod (818 items, of which 675 are songs and 143 are Podcasts). And, if I go to my Touch, and select the playlist and scroll down through it, I can see all the Podcasts. But- the frustrating part- when I hit "Shuffle" to mix up the songs and play that playlist, they are missing, and the song count says "1 of 675", so it is clearly not counting the Podcasts as part of the playlist, even though the listing shows them present. Ditto on the Nano.
Does anyone have any clues what to do here? I have tried "Genre contains Podcast", etcs... If I put in "Playist is Music" which I have seen elsewhere, all podcasts disappear from the list, as they are not actually music, so I don't really understand that particular tip.

Very cool- that worked, thank you! I didn't know that was even an option, and it must have popped up sometime after I bought my iPod Photo in 2005. And I would guess that the iPod Photo ignores that setting, since it worked just fine on that device, but nothing since then.
One question- I was able to bulk-edit my three Podcast groups by clicking on the group header and applying to all. But will each subsequent Podcast (I get at least 2 new ones each day) default back to Skip, and periodically I'll have to go back and re-edit the groups? Or since I edited at Group level, does iTunes make that setting sticky for that category?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

The only remedy is to erase all contact and settings, then restore as a new device.  If you restore from a backup whether it be on iCloud or iTunes, the iMessage/text history will also be restored.  Just backup what you want to save then re-sync after the restore.

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • IPhone 4, iOS not syncing my SMART playlists of Podcasts

    So weird...
I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and I have several smart playlists, with live updating.
I can rate them, and group them by theme, etc. And I don't have to put the whole podcast list (from "Podcasts") on my phone, if I don't want to.
So far, for years, it's been awesome, and flawless.
But now, with the new iPhone, and new iOS, the playlist is no longer on my 1st-Level in "playlists" on my iPhone, it's tucked into a "Smart Playlists" folder (which is where it is in my iTunes, but it didn't next folders before).
Okay. That's fine. It helps fight the clutter... but there's NO SONGS IN THERE !
I have a "Smart Bands" folder, with several bands, and THOSE sync just fine. Those songs are all THERE.
Does this have something to do w/ Podcasts specifically?
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    AAGH !

    Okay, I tried something.
I changed the TYPE of file from Podcast to "music" and now they sync...
But not being able to alias Podcasts in Smart Playlists? That's not cool

  • Smart Playlists not updating on iPod

    Hi,
I have a couple very simple smart playlists, basically one for each podcast i listen to the smart playlist picks out the podcasts of a specific name that are unplayed.
if I look at the smart playlists in the platlist pane of iTunes they contain the proper contents (say 3 episodes of TWIT I haven't listened too) but on my Nano they will be empty or cotain only a partial list of correct content.
I have Itunes set to auto sync, even tried manual sync still no luck.
    Any ideas?
BTW, I'm using the latest version of iTunes and OS X on a dual 2.0 GHz G5

    Well -
    - I was being polite. It's not only "not cool", but its goes against Apple's Terms of Use. It is also not necessary to bump after just two hours. This is a worldwide forum and it's possible that someone with the answer to your question is asleep on the other side of the world to you at the time you posted and repeatedly bumped.
If you had browsed throught the other threads here, you would have noticed that you're not the only one to be having issues with Playlists changes not transferring to your iPod. In fact, the number of posts about it suggests to me that there is a problem as a result of iOS7.
So you can do two things, should you wish:
    Look through recent discussions about Playlist update problems (rather than the "more like this" section, which will give you results prior to iOS7) to see if anyone has figured out a solution;
Wait for the next update to iOS7 and see if that fixes it.

I've installed the update, confirmed that my iPod is now running v1.2.1 and I've done a reset, but no Smart Playlist live update lovin'. I played a few tracks on the iPod and none of them showed up in my Recently Played Smart Playlist. )c:
Has anyone gotten this to work? And if so on which model? Or am I just doing something wrong?

From Article 301910 in Apple's Knowledge Base Smart Playlists stop updating dynamically on iPod
If you have an iPod with a Click Wheel, Smart Playlists may stop updating dynamically after you update your iPod with iPod Updater 2005-06-26 or later. For example, if you rate a song on your iPod, the rating appears, but that same song won't appear in a Smart Playlist based on the same rating on your iPod. But this can happen with a Smart Playlist based on any criteria.
Use the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 or later to resolve this.
Note: This issue does not affect iPod nano or Fifth Generation iPod.
Tutackhamen's comments are correct. There is a bug in that smart playlists do not recognize "podcast is true". Instead, you need to use a condition like "genre contains podcast". Apart from this, smart playlists are working. Nested playlists also work correctly, but all playlists must be on the iPod, since you won't match the updated conditions until these playlists complete.
