Mystery quaratined mailbox

Hi folks,
I have some kind of mailbox corruption in my Exchange 2013 mailbox database that is causing Exchange to hang every day for the last couple of days. The problem is I can’t figure out which mailbox
is involved.
I get following sequence of errors:
MSEchangeIS Information 1015
The mailbox with mailboxguid "14b36edb-51b8-4159-a506-735895f6c8eb" has been unquarantined. Access to this mailbox has been restored.
Then these next two are repeated three times
MSExchangeIS Error 1013
The mailbox with mailboxguid "14b36edb-51b8-4159-a506-735895f6c8eb" caused crash or resource outage on database (GUID="be4f5450-e7cd-422f-b72d-5705f3fdbb68")
MSExchangeIS Error 2008
Microsoft Exchange Information Store worker process (21084) has encountered a fatal database exception (Microsoft.Isam.Esent.Interop.EsentBadParentPageLinkException: Database corrupted (followed
by a very long stack trace)
finally
The mailbox with mailboxguid "14b36edb-51b8-4159-a506-735895f6c8eb" has been quarantined. Access to this mailbox will be restricted to administrative logons for 1.00:00:00 since the
last report.
The problem is that my users get disconnected from Exchange every time this happens and are locked out for the duration of the sequence—about two or three minutes. I know this isn't such a
big deal, but I have users who get very nervous whenever anything unusual happens with email.
I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find any reference to the mailbox GUID mentioned except in the quarantined mailbox record in the registry. I’ve tried finding the GUID using get-mailbox |
list and some other cmdlets in PowerShell as recommended in Tony Redmond’s ‘Microsoft Exchange Server 2013: Mailbox and High Availability’ book and tried some other things I found in a Technet blog about searching Active Directory but so far nothing has turned
up.
I have a feeling that this might have something to do with a calendar in a public folder, but I can’t be certain.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Please refer to the following article to find this mailbox:
Recreate Exchange 2013 Health Mailboxes
Running Get-Mailbox –Monitoring will list all the health mailboxes in your 2013 organization.
There will be two health mailboxes created for every mailbox database – one is used for mailbox and the other for public folder.

  • Mystery forced mailbox imports

This has happened to me three times now over the past couple of months since I moved to Leopard. For no apparent reason Mail.app pops up a dialogue box telling me (if I remember right) that it needs to rebuild the indexes and forces me to quit. On restart it wants to import all my emails all over again. That's currently more than 23,000 of them (work emails mostly, going back to 2002).
I can't figure out why. The only clue is a single entry in system.log at about the same time this happened (maybe exactly the same time, I'm not sure) which reads:
    Mar 27 16:30:31 Dino Mail[292]: Moving database to /Users/john/Library/Mail/Envelope Index-1... no errors
Since then I've googled for "Envelope Index" and understand what it's there for. But the strange thing is that looking back through my Time Machine backups, I didn't have an "Envelope Index" prior to this error. It simply didn't exist. It was there in the 16:38 backup, but not in the 15:38 backup, or any backup before that.
Anyone got any clues what might be going on here?
BTW, the other pain in the butt about importing all my mail again is that it insists on re-caching all my .Mac attachments, which takes ages and generates gobs of network traffic. This time I'm at home. The last time I was on a hotel WiFi network. If this ever throws a fit when I'm stuck somewhere on my 3G data card, I'll be in trouble!

Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail.
Do you have more than one Envelope Index file?
    Mar 27 16:30:31 Dino Mail292: Moving database to /Users/john/Library/Mail/Envelope Index-1... no errors
This seems to indicate that you might - Envelope Index-1.
There should be no -1 included with the file name. It should be Envelope Index only.
Since this has occurred 3 times over the past couple of months - I've never experienced the same before or since upgrading to Leopard, I suggest deleting the Envelope Index file. If there is an Envelope Index file and an Envelope Index-1 file, I would delete both - with the Mail.app quit before doing so.
This will require re-indexing all mailboxes once again, but may resolve the problem.

  • Mystery icon in Mailbox column headers

For no apparent reason, now when I create a new mailbox, the first column header contains a mystery icon consisting of two arrows, one pointing northwest and the other pointing southeast. When I right-click on the headers, there is no corresponding item in the pop-up menu (e.g. Attachments, To, From), so I have no clue what it is, nor can I hide it.
Mailboxes I created prior to whatever it is that changed do not have this icon. I have not changed my OS, nor the version of Mail I am using. Can anyone tell me what this icon/column is for, and how I can get rid of it??
    Thanks!

  • Exchange 2013 - Mailbox DB disk drive mysteriously full

We have an exchange 2013 server with a second drive for storing the mailbox DBs. The drive itself is 115GB, and the mailbox DBs only total about 41GB when I analyze the properties of the folders. We have the DBs being backed up with DPM, with a full backup

  • Creating Smart Mailbox Folders in Mail.app (Lion): they do not save and disappear every time the application closes....

    Hello there -
Hopefully someone can help, because this is just frustrating and weird.  In Mail on Mac OSX Lion, I can create all the Smart Mailboxes I want, but if I try to create a Smart Mailbox folder, it shows up just fine in the sidebar.  But, as soon as I close Mail, then re-open, the Smart Mailbox Folder is gone as if it never existed.  This happens whether or not I actually put any Smart Mailboxes in the folder.  Anyone else seen this issue and have suggestions?

Okay, I think I just discoverd a workaround. This will work if you're lucky enough to already have a smart-mailbox folder that persists after close. (Somehow I had two such folders that already existed and weren't subject to the mysterious disappearances on closing the app; perhaps I created them in a previous OS X release?) Anyway, here goes:
Locate an already existing smart mailbox folder that's working properly. Select the folder (in the sidebar).
Duplicate that folder using the "Duplicate Smart Mailbox" Command. (It's on the contextual pop-up menu or available via the gear icon in the lower left of the window). This should produce and exact copy of the folder and the boxes inside, appearing at the bottom of the smart mailbox list.
Edit the duplicate folder to put the smart mailboxes you want in it, and delete the previous mailboxes (duplicates) that you don't want.
The new folder structure should now persist between launches of the app.
There you go. Not the most elegant process, but workable. Don't know if there's a method if you don't have at least one smart mailbox folder already though.

  • EWS Managed API - 1. BindToItems returns ErrorAccessDenied error, 2. appointments created in one mailbox show up in others

    Hi,
I know there are other questions about ErrorAccessDenied but they are not exactly describing my situation and all are pretty much old and mostly not answered so forgive me for creating my own.
Also, wall of text coming so please bear with me.
We have an application that synchronizes Exchange items into our internal systems. Items created on Exchange are stored in that system and vice versa of course with a lot of business logic and rules, etc. Application uses EWS Managed API and impersonation
to access users mailboxes. Everything works fine but now we have this one customer that has a lot of strange things going on with main 2 problems mentioned in subject.
    1. To ensure both sides (Exchange and our system) are in sync we have a functionality that allows users to decide that items no longer existing on Exchange should be removed also from system database. Since in our record we store id of original Exchange
item internal system simply sends us list of those ids to confirm items still exist. What application does is a BindToItems method call with BasePropertySet.IdOnly as requested property and depending on server response we notify internal system about state
of items. There is some semi complex logic behind what exactly is done on system side but in general NoError and item returned means item exists, ErrorItemNotFound means item doesn't exist.
For this one customer suddenly we started to receive ErrorAccessDenied and ErrorBatchProcessingStopped error codes which is very strange because seconds earlier there were events read from PullSubscribtion, items read from server, items created on server
and bunch of other stuff going on which basically makes me sure that impersonation is working. For some reason during execution of this particular code ErrorAccesDenied is returned and it messes up whole BindToItems call.
But what is really strange is that for first id in list of ids we get NoError and correct item returned, for second id we get ErrorAccessDenied, and rest of responses is ErrorBatchProcessingStopped. So is it really about credentials or there is some
completely different reason AccessDenied is retuned? According to customer those items exist in user mailbox for whom those errors are showing up. It doesn't happen for all users, only for some - who have exactly the same configuration of mailboxes as rest
    (according to customer).
    2. For same customer another problem started to occur since 1st of January, at least that is a date when they noticed it for the first time. Again, it happens for some users and there is no scenario that would guarantee to reproduce it.
When new record is created in our system or its data change it has to be created/updated on Exchange. With same impersonation as for problem described above I simply create new item or find existing item using id provided by our system, set item properties
according to whatever was sent and save/update item on Exchange. Simple and it works in multiple installations without problems.
But this customer reports that appointments created for one user show up in other users mailboxes which I find really strange because as far as I know when I impersonate [email protected] everything I do is executed in context of this one user only. So if
I create appointment in his calendar I cannot create same appointment in userB's calendar without explicitly switching impersonation to userB. What is worth mentioning during our sync process we store on Exchange items bunch of custom properties that help
us verify whole process and do various filters, etc. All of those custom properties are visible in outlook in that design form view or whatever it is called. And I have screenshot from user that claims to have one of those "not his" appointments
and basically half of our properties is not there and some have no values while they definitely should have otherwise whole sync would fail and everything is logged as successful.
Sorry for this wall of text but I really have no idea what can causing those strange problems so I tried to describe as much as possible without breaching NDA and such stuff. We added a lot of logging around areas where impersonation is changed, Exchange
items are created/updated, etc. Logs show nothing, of course.
So, for first issue: is it possible that items were moved on Exchange in such way that user still can see them but for EWS API call we get ErrorAccessDenied? I'm not sure where exactly could be such location because if id of an item would change we should
rather get ErrorItemNotFound or even something about id being not properly formatted, right?
For second issue: is it possible that there is something running on Exchange server and does some kind of simplistic mirroring of items between mailboxes? Customer claims there are no such things on server nor user side but can it be something that non-IT
people wouldn't know? Like some kind of script that admins like to run to keep server healthy or something innocent but lethal for our scenarios? Anybody has any hints what we should even ask customer about to get closer to solution of those mysterious problems?

Were you able to figure what was going on with your first problem? we're seeing the exact same issue with one of our customers.

  • Sending mail smtp vs exchange without outlook mailbox opened

We have an application published via Citrix Xenapp 6.5 on win2k8r2 servers which uses server-side Outlook for composing/sending mail.  The user does a one time setup of the Outlook profile through a Citrix published Outlook.exe.  After the setup
their Outlook profile is then retained in their Citrix/roaming profile and Citrix published Outlook.exe is no longer opened directly.  When the user clicks an 'email' button in the application, an Outlook send/compose window from the server appears with
the contents attached and ready to be mailed.   Up until now employees were using Exchange mailboxes and this functioned perfectly.  Hit 'send' on that compose window and the message would get sent.  We are now migrating most mailboxes
to IMAP and have found that in order for the Citrix Outlook instance to be able to send its mail via SMTP, a server-side session of the Outlook.exe mailbox has to actually be opened and not just the compose window otherwise the messages appear to send but
are actually just sitting in the outbox.  No errors.  Once Outlook mailbox is opened, the messages get sent out.  We dont want users to have to open up a separate Citrix Outlook instance as this creates confusion with their usual client-side
Outlook and it's unwanted for limited resources in Citrix sessions to go towards sync'ing mailboxes.  Seeing the same behavior with Outlook 2007 sp1 and Outlook 2013 sp1 x86.  Why would this work with Exchange but not SMTP and can anyone suggest
    workarounds?
I'm not knowledgeable with vbs/vba but i was considering whether it's possible to launch outlook hidden from the user or to script initiation of send/recv session on the mailbox at scheduled intervals without outlook open, thinking that might send what's
in the outbox.  these are some areas i've looked into but havent gotten results yet -
Email remains in the Outbox when the StrictAccountOrder registry value is non-zero
    The mysterious Outlook Outbox
    Launch Outlook Hidden
Force outlook to "Send/Receive All" using VBA
    http://discussions.citrix.com/topic/332666-need-workaround-for-running-an-old-application-as-a-published-app/
    Thanks

When you use a SMTP server, you need Outlook open to send mail - the spooler has to have time to load and send the message. When you use Exchange, outlook hands the message off to exchange and exchange sends it.
It's not possible to launch outlook hidden using a different profile - you can only use one profile at a time. There is a utility called ExtraOutlook that can open two profiles that might work for you - most people say it works, but AFAIK, it won't open
the second profile in a hidden state.

  • How to get accurate count of contents of smart mailbox?

I have a smart mailbox defined as "sender is a member of a group x" and "date received is within last 2 days." When I click on it, Mail indicates "(8 messages)" -- but there are only 7 listed. I've tried the sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum command in Terminal, I've rebuilt the individual mailboxes making up this count (and the smart mailbox itself) and I even deleted the smart mailbox itself and recreated it, to no avail.
Any other suggestions for getting a correct count?

Is it possible that mysterious 8th message is one you deleted, but is still registering as being there, even though you can't see it? Have you tried enabling the View > Show Deleted Messages command to see if it appears then?
If that command shows you nothing, then you can completely rebuild your Mail index to see if that solves your problem:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove (+*do not delete yet*+) the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
    3. Restart Mail and let it import your existing mailboxes. When that's done, your index will be brand new and with any luck that message should no longer show up in a count. Now you can delete the Envelope Index file you removed previously.

  • Mysterious "junk mail" problem

For the past couple of days, each time I open Mail (2.0.5); aside from fetching mail, takes a random, recent email (sometimes sent, sometimes received) and places it in the Junk Mail folder. It does not mark the mail as junk (No 'Mail thinks this mail is Junk' header).
The mail (always Ham, often mail which I have sent) which mysteriously moves from the in-box or sent items is always recent (though not always the last received/sent); there is never more than one.
This is hardly earth-shattering in its ramifications, but it means I have to carefully check the Junk mailbox before quitting (as I have Mail set to erase Junk on quit)
    Any thoughts, people?

  • Smart Mailboxes empty / dumb

I'm syncing Mail over four computers using my mobileme.com. All running same version of OS 10.6.8. Periodically after I MERGE my "Mail Rules, Signatures and Smart Mailboxes" they still appear, but no longer function. When I go to edit the smart mailbox, the criteria have all disappeared and I get four blank windows. I have had to recreate smart mailboxes twice and reset sync data from one computer to mobileme to reverse sync to the other computers. The mail server is Exchange 2007. Could that have something to do with it?

I guess if you wait long enough, you can answer your own questions. I realized that at least one of my computers had an older version of Mail.app (4.4) and none of the computers were running the program in 32-bit mode. I didn't even know that was an option. However, I have since updated all versions of Mail (on 3 computers) to 4.5 and am running them all in 32-bit mode. This has fixed the mysterious empty smart mailboxes problem. In short, my smart mailboxes are, once again, my friend!

  • Mail suddenly closed and mailboxes gone

    Hi...and help!
I was just sending an email and when trying to cut and paste, Mail closed suddenly. I reopened, repeated my email including the cut and paste, and it closed again.
The second time, however, it gave me a message like, there are new settings or the original settings, which do you want? Thinking the original settings meant the blank slate that Mail came with and new settings were the ones I had set up, I selected new. Then when I tried to open Mail, it wanted me to set up accounts. It seems like there are no mailboxes. I had about 10 mailboxes when they all disappeared.
I looked a few posts here and saw that I should check my Library folder...lo, there is a Mail folder that has my mailboxes in it.
How do I get the info from those files into Mail?
    Many thanks.

    Hi aflipflopper.
What’s the capacity and space available on your startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Even if there is enough space available on the startup disk, for some reason that remains a mystery to me, Mail sometimes “thinks” it must discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. As a result, all your non-Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves), which are stored in that file, are lost.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    1. Restore com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    2. Set up your non-Mac accounts in Mail again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    3. Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try moving the new com.apple.mail.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences/ (e.g. to the Desktop) and rename the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Since Mail decided to discard it, I would expect this file to be corrupt (I don’t understand why would Mail discard it and create a new one otherwise), but apparently that often is not the case and the settings can indeed be restored by just renaming the file.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Legacy vs User mailbox

I understand the difference between the two. My question is; why would some moved, 2003 mailboxes' recipient type be Legacy while others, also moved from 2003, are User Mailboxes?

    Hmm well technically that shouldn't happen and;
I take it that no one converted just some of the mailboxes and forgot to do others?
All mailboxes are 100% moved to 2010?
The mailboxes were all migrated via mailbox move, i.e. you didn't by chance create a mailbox for a user on 2010 and then export to PST from 2003 and import into 2010?

  • How could you create 'Last Time Contacted' Smart Mailbox in Mail app Lion?

    Hello!
For the purposes of maintaining regular contact with a large group of contacts in your address book:
How could you create a smart mailbox in the Mail App (Lion) which contained that last unique sent/received email from each individual contact?
So ideally just the last email per contact. For my purposes I would then sort by date and find the contacts I havent emailed in a while and re-initiate conversation.
I also thought that perhaps it would be possible through Automator? (I am not very familiar with how to use this app)
Any ideas/solutions would be very appreciated!

  • Deleting Mysterious Email

I received an email out of the blue - no sender, no subject.  I can't delete it.  Swiping doesn't work, "edit" key won't let me "check" it for deletion.  Am I stuck with this in my inbox forever?

Wow,now that's weird.  I solved my own problem by going to the main mailbox "tree" ('cause I have a bunch of different folders), scrolled down to the Junk folder, opened it, then closed it.  When I went back to my Inbox, the mysterious email was gone.  Go figure!

  • Mail disappearing from mailbox

One of my hotmail account keeps disappearing from iphone 6 mailbox and then returns after sometimes.
Any help on this issue is appreciated.

To add to the mystery, it seems as though it is not just the IMAP files on our server that are being impacted. This morning I copied about a dozen messages (via Mail.app) from his [email protected] inbox to a folder on his [email protected] IMAP account in order to make sure that he could use his iPhone while out and about to read those messages while out and about. A few hours later those messages on MobileMe were altered - a few disappearing for example. Meanwhile, a folder on our IMAP server ceased to exist, including a few dozen old email messages from 2009.
Maybe there is something bizarre going on with his Mail.app setup that is doing something evil with the IMAP servers? Mabye it is time to create a new account on his computer and see if using that will stop the weirdness?
