Mystery: Thinkpad's bluetooth range suddenly reduced

Tl;dr: My Thinkpad's Bluetooth broadcast range suddenly dropped to a mere few feet. Afaik it's not about the headset, not about the drivers and not about the antennas.
Hello, I was hoping somebody could help me with a problem that has left me completely puzzled.
I have a Thinkpad S531 which has been upgraded with Intel centrino N 2230 wireless card - the rig has worked flawlessly for more than a year. I often use a wireless Bluetooth headset to listen to music, not wanting to annoy my neighbours.
Recently however the range of Bluetooth dropped dramatically. I can still connect and pair devices no problem -  and the headset functions if I sit in front of the notebook -  but should I step a few feet away from the audio starts breaking and dropping. (Previously the Bluetooth had range in my entire apartment.)
So far I have tried..
- resetting and recharging the headset, they work perfectly with my phone and SO's thinkpad
-uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
-reinstalling Win7 (was overdue anyway)
-popping open the maintenance cover to see if any antenna wire has come loose (unlikely as Wi-Fi performance remains unchanged)
All in all I have no more ideas. What could cause the range to be reduced so suddenly and decisively, without affecting other wireless performance?
Thanks in advance!

  • Bluetooth range suddenly drops 80% on PowerPC G4 laptop

It's been flawless for 2+ years. Then yesterday, upon awakening from a 2-hour nap, the laptop's Bluetooth went bad. It will only see the (recommended) Kensington Si670m mouse when the mouse is physically located ON the laptop case. When mouse is in its usual place 10" away, the onscreen response is jumpy, erratic, useless.
The Apple bluetooth keyboard also has less range than it had, but it's good for 4 feet, far more than the mouse. It used to be effective from more than twice that distance.
No change when I put in fresh batteries, re-install mouse, reboot, or power down. A tech friend said it sounds like the Bluetooth circuit board needs replacing. Is this what someone handy with microtools can do with a 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4? Can I buy a Bluetooth circuit board? Do they come with installation instructions? Are there choices and guidance about these boards?
    Thanks. Appreciate any help.

  • Battery Life suddenly reduced

Hi. Beginning a little over a week ago my battery life suddenly reduced by about half. My iPhone is warmer now, even when it's not in use. It wasn't coincident with anything I noticed, e.g. no new iOS release, no change in application use. I've reviewed my Location Services, no unexpected grey GPS symbols (and no purple of course). Does anyone have any ideas as to what might cause this?

  • Lost Bluetooth range after 10.4.7 update

Using salling clicker and basic browsing and file transfer in OS X, on my 15" powerbook 1.25ghz
I used to have the normal 30 foot average range. I could work in the kitchen and control itunes via salling clicker.
after the update my bluetooth range is now no more than two feet.
also to connect from computer to phone or vice versa, I have to turn off/on bluetooth on my powerbook.
    what gives?
the update isn't worth the frustration. Is there a way to reverse update?

On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM reset:

I'm trying to use Nokia N9 with long range bluetooth headset (Motorola HX550).
It doesn't seems to me that it works up to 100 m.
Motorola stated that the phone must be BLUETOOTH® RANGE Class 1 compatible.

  • Limited Bluetooth Range in 15" Al PowerBook- fix or USB workaround?

Recently picked up a used 1.5GHz AlBook (2 years left on Applecare). Just discovered that the built-in Bluetooth range is VERY limited- less than 2 feet. I can take it in for Applecare when I have the time to do without the machine for a week, but in the meantime, is there a way to turn off the internal Bluetooth so I can use my (more reliable) USB bluetooth key instead?
Has anybody run across this issue before?

Wow! That's an incredibly short range! I understand that parting from your computer is something hard, especially if that the only computer you have.
Anyway... if you go to System Preferences>Bluetooth>Settings you'll find a way to turn it off.
But never mind what the built-in bluetooth is, just connect your dongle and it should work right away. You will notice, if you keep an eye on the settings (route above mentioned) that the button to toggle Bluetooth on and off will change for an "unclickable" message as long as the dongle is plugged in.
I bought one of those for my brother's HP laptop, and tried it since it claimed to have a 100-meter range.

regarding limited bluetooth range on the 15" Al powerbook g4.
i have this same problem. has anyone else had it and determined the source? i still have time left on my 1yr applecare from when i bought this powerbook, but i have had bad luck with them. basically, i'd rather hold it under the kitchen faucet and look for a replacement than have apple bumble my hardware again.
i am a computer engineer. i'm hoping to find some prior knowledge before i open this up and start probing with my O-scope. i'll post what i find here regardless, but if you've had this problem as well, i'd appreciate the added knowledge of your experience.

15" PowerBook G4 Al   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   never once been happy with Airport range, now bluetooth is bad too

    A few of things…
    1) Are you using wireless network connections as well. If so, oes you Bluetooth range increase if you turn it off?
    2) Do you have any sources of interference…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58543
… that can be causing issues. Even though the Knowledge Base Documnet refers to Airport intereference the principles are the same. If yu do, again, turn them off to see if things are any different.
    3) How many Bluetooth devices are you using? If you are using more than one does your range change when using ONLY one?

  • Thinkpad 10 Bluetooth issues

I am having a big problem with the Thinkpad 10 bluetooth peripheral devices.
I am using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse which I have used with other devices without issue.
The mouse is very laggy and jumpy and difficult to make precise controls even for just selecting menus or placing a cursor in MS Word.
The bluetooth keyboard also seems to sleep too quickly and is slow to wake from sleep. Additionally the keyboard will sometimes type a key repeatedly.
I did not have any of these problems with the same peripherals on a different tablet.
I have re-installed the latest drivers and bios updates but the issue remains.
I went into device manager and changed the network adapter advanced settings to disable bluetooth collaboration and now the keyboard is not repeatedly typing keys but still sleeps too quickly and is slow to wake from sleep.
The mouse is still extremely laggy and frustrating to use.
I have also gone into device manager and tried to disable the option to allow the computer to turn the bluetooth off to save energy but that did not help the mouse lag.
I also disabled the option to use minimum power consumption in the network adapter settings in device manager but it did not help.
I use this connected to an external monitor and need the mouse to work well.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is very frustrating.
    P.S. I have the 64gb 2gb ram model.

This is apparently a very common problem even by MS SUrface(expensive) tablets. I did read a LOT of forums and also I came up with using a Lenovo USB Y cable for charging and Microsoft ARC keyboard, which is USB dongled. And I kept the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook mouse 5000 which works great now. When I connected any BT keyboard along with the mouse, the mouse cursor was sometimes fine, but mostly very laggy and unusable.
I believe, there is nothing you can do to use both BT keyboard and BT mouse without problems. Interesting was, that sometimes I had no lags and everything worked well. It seemed very random to me and very extraordinary thou.

  • Sony Xperia Z3 very poor bluetooth range

Hi, I own a Sony SRS X5 personal speaker which connects trough bluetooth to my Xperia Z3. The problem is that it disconnects when I have the phone 3 feet away, or sometimes less.. Is there a problem with bluetooth range on the Xperia Z3?? I had an Xperia ZL which had great range and worked well with said speakers. Anyone else have this problem???

Do you experience bad bluetooth range with other accessories as well? It would be great if you could try some headset or something to see it the problem is related to the phone, the speaker or a combination of the two.

  • SBH-70 very low bluetooth range

Hi. I bought the new SBH-70 Bluetooth Headset. I like this item very much. But the bluetooth range is really bad. Already at 2 m or less distance from the phone, the connection gets really worse and the Headset starts to have noise interferences. Before I used the SBH 50 Headset and the bluetooth connection was much better and mor stable with this model. You think there is something wrong with my SBH-70? Or has it really such a poor Bluetooth range? Thanks for your help. Reimer

  • Any way to boost bluetooth range

Now I know this is not a typical issue, but I was hoping some of you may have some solutions. I just purchased an iPhone 4 for my brother. He loves it, but the problem is he works in harsh environments (namely, on top of roofs in FL needless to say in sweltering heat). What he would like to be able to do is keep the phone in an airconditioned place like a car or home at a workshop where possible, and use a bluetooth headset for music and calls. Of course, this runs into the problem of range. I have looked, but I haven't been able to find any type of 'bluetooth signal booster' for something like an iphone (although there are apparenly such things for Macs and PCs with USB ports).
Anyone know of anything like that, or any other ideas for solutions?
BTW, he's got the toughest case we can find on the market yet and the film, but he's still not comfortable taking it with him on some jobs for obvious reasons.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately even if there was a Bluetooth Booster, it wouldn't reach the headset. In most first floor to second floor to another measurement is 20 feet give or take. Some documented as 10 feet each. We'll say 20 feet each
Depending on how many floors to the roof (say two/three floors from level 1) it's 40/60 feet.
Bluetooth signals reach up to 30 feet in most devices other than the i4. You can equip a sound out to a bluetooth ranger but that varies in how wide it can without messing with the i4. But you'll lose controls on the i4.

  • I would like to AirPlay mirror my iMac and be able to use both my magic mouse and wireless keyboard, but the bluetooth range won't let me. Is there a way to extended its range?

I am buying an iMac to AirPlay mirror on my big screen TV with AppleTV (2nd generation). But my TV is located far away from my iMac and I won't be able to use my magic mouse or wireless keyboard via bluetooth connection. I know I can use an app to simulate both mouse and keyboard, but I really need to use the actual devices.
I wish there was a way to pair them to my iPad or iPhone, via bluetooth, and control my iMac via network. It is a cheap solution, as I wouldn't need to buy any other device. I believe all these devices, without modifications, have enough technology to be able to work as I've imagined. The only need was to adapt the software.
Is there a solution simple as this one, or do I have to buy a Bluetooth extender in order to use my magic mouse and wireless keyboard? If so, which BT extender do you suggest and what is its range?
    Thank you!

  • Loss of bluetooth range on mac mini (lion x/memory upgrade)

I have a mac mini 2009. I just upgraded to lion x and added 3GB of RAM.  For some reason my bluetooth mouse and keyboard have lost their range.  They both work but I have to use them within a foot of the computer.  Ive replaced the batteries.. any help is greatly appreciated

I fixed this last night (Mac Mini, Late 2009). If you have upgraded your RAM there is a strong possibility that the bluetooth antenna came loose while reassemling the mini. I was very careful installing ram, but last evening when I dissassembled the mini I found that one of the bluetooth antennae was disconnected. Popped it back in, reassembled, and my reception went from 1 foot back up to the full extent of the room. If you are having range problems, take it apart (ifixit.com) and check it.
