Myths of required versus not required maintenance for Mac OS X

Many people come in here claiming to have run maintenance scripts and other addons thinking they are doing a good thing for their computer. Turns out Mac OS X requires very little basic maintenance. Here is a true false listing of maintenance that Mac OS X requires:
1. Backing up your data. True. Definitely required unless you don't value your data, or wish to spend thousands on data recovery when your hard drive fails, or when you make a mistake about deleting a file that you shouldn't have.
2. Repairing permissions. Partially false. Most times it isn't required. Occasionally though it has been discovered that after a system is updated with new security or new operating system update, that issues disappear when permissions are repaired via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
3. Repairing the directory. Partially false. Only required if your data is backed up, and access to your files suddenly is limited even after Spotlight indexing is complete. More true if you get a flashing ? disk, though zapping the PRAM sometimes fixes this issue as well.
4. Deleting cache files. False. Corrupted cache files can create more harm than good, but system maintenance utilities which attempt to delete those files frequently do it when some system applications are running, creating additional corrupted cache files. If you suspect corrupt cache files, often only restoring your backup will fix those issues. If you must try to fix corrupted cache files, backup your data first.
5. Updating prebinding. Partially false. Some applications may not launch properly if their update doesn't update prebinding in the process. Some Mac OS X system updates do updating prebinding when they are optimizing the system. Other times permissions, cache, preference, or incompatibility issues can cause applications not to launch. Backup your data before attempting.
6. Keeping your system not overflowing with data. True. Check your capacity of your system hard drive, and how much space is used. If over 85% is used, it has been arbitrarily found that the system may slow down. Deleting unessential files can help. Ask here what those are.
7. Logfile cleanup. True. Required at least once a month. Some third party utilities will do this manually whenever you choose. It can also be done by the operating system if your system is allowed to run in Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver overnight.
8. Spyware and virus cleanup. True to an extent. While there are no viruses in the wild as of the writing of this article for Mac OS X applications, if you share data with Windows users, you wouldn't want to become the Typhoid Mary affecting those users. Vigilence in understanding that you shouldn't open attachments from unknown e-mail sources and not falling pray to attempted identity information gathering by e-mail is always wise. If uncertain about a source, contact them first to find out if an e-mail really was sent with an e-mail, snail mail, or phone call sent to their known address, and not an e-mail replying to the message you received! The latter may be spoofed.
Mac OS X security updates will keep you even safer, though sometimes a system update is required to get them. Basic good security practices though are always recommended, even if you can't apply those updates, in event your application that you can afford isn't yet updated for the new system.

It is not strictly true that there are no viruses for Mac OS X applications. MS Office applications are Mac OS X applications, as are OpenOffice etc., and my understanding is that Word documents etc. can introduce macro viruses. Even though these may not be able to do the harm they would do on a PC, I believe they can do things such as infecting other documents, templates etc.
Given the number of users who are now also running Windows on their Macs via BootCamp or what have you, should a note about vulnerability to Windows viruses in such cases be added? It sounds otherwise as though only non-Mac Windows users are vulnerable.

I've tested it, and they don't. I don't know where you're getting your info.
I'm getting my info from several sources:
-By reading my daily.out, weekly.out, and monthly.out log files, which confirm that they are running as often as they are supposed to, even though my Mac is asleep all night long, and I don't have Anacron installed
-From the Anacron home page, where the developer himself says that Anacron "is not needed, as the Leopard launchd will run skipped jobs when the machine is next awake."
-From this Apple Developer Connection page, where Apple says that "In Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier, cron(8) is responsible for starting periodic jobs. In v10.4 and later, launchd(8) starts the jobs. As a result, if your computer is asleep at the scheduled time, in Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier, the job does not run; in Mac OS X v10.4 and later, the job executes automatically when the computer wakes up."
Can you tell me where your claim is documented?

  • Myths of Required Maintenance Item 7

Item 7 of the user tip "Myths of required versus not required maintenance for Mac OS X" states that "7. Logfile cleanup. True. Required at least once a month. Some third party utilities will do this manually whenever you choose. It can also be done by the operating system if your system is allowed to run in Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver overnight. With Leopard, it may do this later if your unit is left on overnight even if asleep."
According to the last message in this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1239749&start=15&tstart=0
"OS X 10.5 runs {maintenance scripts} automatically. It is also NOT necessary to leave a computer on 24x7. The system will run the routines when it is able to do so."
Perhaps that item 7 should be rewritten to clarify that starting with OS X 10.5 it is no longer necessary to run log file cleanup scripts manually.

The system will run the routines when it is able to do so.
The key word here is "when". Some people process so much information on their computers, and then immediately shut down, it may not have a chance to do it.

Since yesterday all my usual .xls files will not open (Office for Mac 2011). CAN open .xlxs files. Default 'open with' is Microsoft Excel.app. No software updates done yesterday or the day before (or maybe a Silverlight or an Acrobat one by accident?). Have repaired disc permissions. HHD name is still same as it always was. What next? Thanks
PS I'm not a great techie so assume I don't know what you're talking about!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Best Note Taking Software for Mac?

I'm a current college student and will soon be going to grad school as well. I Use my laptop all the time to take notes in class. On my pc, I was nuts over Microsoft OneNote 2003.
What programs for Mac do all of you students use to take notes with? Anything like OneNote? Anything better that I'm unaware of? Calling all students!!
    Thanks
Emachines M6811 AMD 2.2Ghz. 512 MB RAM   Windows XP

The best I have found is actually Microsoft Word. You may not know this, but in the Project Gallery select Notebook, and you will be greeted with a page and abilities very similar to OneNote. The best part is, it's free with MS Office, which I assume you have since you are a student. I haven't looked around a whole lot for otehr programs, but as far as I'm concerned there isn't really any reason to.

  • Know how to automatically sync iCloud notes on Outlook for Mac 2011?

    Hi People,
I've decided to use Outlook for Mac 2011 instead of Apple Mail. Does anyone know how I can setup Outlook notes to sync automatically with my iCloud Notes?
    Much appreciated
    Kind regards
    Doug

    You can't.
Outlook for Mac is not compatible with iCloud except for email. See Microsoft's statement here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2648915
Until Microsoft decides to start supporting the industry standard protocols iCloud uses, Outlook for Mac is useless.

  • Not Many Apps for Mac

I just got the new iMac and the lack of apps for this computer is dissappointing.  I have an ipad and I have many apps on there that I would like to be able to use on my Mac, since most of my day is spent on the Mac.  By syncing my ipad on the Mac, would that grant me access to those apps?

Nope. The iPad Apps are not compatible with the Mac.

  • Is Notes syncing only for Macs?

I am not able to see how to sync Notes with my PC. Is it perhaps meant only for Macs?

""Sync notes in the Notes application on iPhone with notes in Mail on a Mac"
I opened Mail on my Mac and looked in Mail and also checked Mail Help under the word 'Notes' and got nothing. Is there a definitive way to accomplish syncing Notes on a G4 10.4 Mac?
    Thanks,

  • Javascript works on Safari for Windows but not on Safari for Mac (2.0.4)

One part of our mail's web-based interface is not working properly when I use Safari on Mac (2.0.4). However, it works on Safari for Windows and Firefox. I browsed through a lot of the forum entrees with java/javascript on the subject and it seems that java processing is a common problem. I have checked all the necessary settings suggested on the forums but it still does not work.
We tried using the new Safari on another machine and it works. However, I also see lots of forum entrees asking how to uninstall Safari 3!
I also have a window on the open-source SugarCRM not working properly on Safari 2.0.4. Any fix coming?

I noticed that as well. I have to wonder if it's due to not making note of the the different end of line characters between Mac OS X and Windows in code.

  • Problem with Import Computer Information Wizard not doing check for MAC or GUID already in database

    Hi,
My client is using SCCM 2012 RTM in a standalone site.
Yesterday, a technician was preparing computers to deploy OS. He was in a replace scenario and mistakenly mixed the MAC address of the source computer with the one of the new computer.
So when importing computer information for the new one, he entered the wrong MAC address; the one of the source computer already existing in the SCCM database.
I expected the Import Computer Information wizard to generate an error, but no, the import was successful resulting with the source computer DDR being overwritten...
We spent (and lost) time recreating the DDR for the source computer so we could create the computer association for USMT migration.
2 years ago, I opened a call with Microsoft for the exact same issue with SCCM 2007. At that time, they told me that no hotfix would be developped for this bug since there was a workaround (overwritten DDR will re-create itself with Heartbeat
discovery over time) and SCCM 2012 was coming up.
It seems to me that they forgot to fix the issue in 2012. It doesn't seem to be fixed with SP1 as I didn't find anything about it in SP1 doc..
Can someone confirm this bug and can Microsoft do something? Or is there a hotfix already available for it?
    Tnx
    Patrick

Well you could always remove the Delete Resource permission from the technicians User Rights :P
The option to not overwrite the existing computer object, is right there in the SDK.
So it's anyone's guess, why they haven't added an checkbox in the Import Computer Information wizard and why overwrite is set as the default.
Anyways...you can use the following PowerShell script instead of the Import Wizard.
Just open up a PowerShell console, type in . X:\Path\To\Script\ScriptName.ps1 and
    then type New-SCCMComputer
Or you can create a shortcut with the following target %SystemRoot%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -NoExit -Command . X:\Path\To\Script\New-SCCMComputer.ps1; New-SCCMComputer
You will need to change the default values for $SiteServer and $SiteCode to your environment
    Function New-SCCMComputer
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param(
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$False)] $SiteServer = "Server.Domain.Local",
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$False)] $SiteCode = "PS1",
[Parameter(Mandatory=$True,HelpMessage="Please Enter the Computers Name")] $ResourceName,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$True,HelpMessage="Please Enter the Computers MAC ")] $ResourceMAC
    #ImportComputer
    $WMIConnection = ([WMIClass]"\\$($SiteServer)\root\SMS\Site_$($SiteCode):SMS_Site")
    $NewEntry = $WMIConnection.psbase.GetMethodParameters("ImportMachineEntry")
    $NewEntry.MACAddress = $ResourceMAC
    $NewEntry.NetbiosName = $ResourceName
    $NewEntry.OverwriteExistingRecord = $False
    $Resource = $WMIConnection.psbase.InvokeMethod("ImportMachineEntry",$NewEntry,$null)
    if ($Resource)
    if ($Resource.MachineExists) {
Write-Host "ERROR: MACAddress allready exists" -foregroundcolor red
    } else {
Write-Host "Succesfully imported the computer information" -foregroundcolor green

  • I can not download FlashPlayer for MAC

I am trying to download Adobe Flash Player for my MAC.
I have created my ID on Adobe site, I made a confirmation and I really know my password.
But, I have initiated the download and the password was requested, I put all the information: ID and password, but it was not acceptable.

    Hello juliana,
The password being requested is your Mac password.  It is not your AdobeID password.

  • Add to library not working iTunes for mac 11.1.5

I am not sure whether I've had a need to add music to my iTunes library since the Mavericks upgrade but I've discovered that I cannot add to Library by any of the usual methods (add to library, drag dropping etc). I've tried folders, individual files and different music formats but with no success.
Nothing happens atall - it's like I didn't even select the command.
I see a number of old threads on this but nothing recent on this version. Has anyone else had this problem and can point me towards a fix. Do I need to downgrade or apply a patch or give up?

Hi Limnos  (your reply has now appeared it must have been a time delay!)
I've tried this and it has now readded all the old mp3 & M4a files but is not adding the new AIFF files any more.
I then tried using apple encoder to covert the files and import as M4a but that doesn't work either.
It's like it doesn't like any of my new folders.
I've tried applying the 'share'/'permissions' to all subfolders of my music folder where the music is stored but this didn't work either.
Any other suggestions v welcome as I'm running out of ideas

Hi Eliot, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
