N00b mac user - dvd ripping & burning help please

Hi
I have got Mac the Ripper and bought Toast Titanium for my iMac but cant manage to get a copy done yet.
I have tried to rip 2 DVD's using Mac the Ripper and on both it has come up with a warning at the end saying the video has 'bad sectors"
I then open Toast and using the DVD_Video from Video_TS option and drag the Video_TS folder from the DVD I have ripped to Toast as instructed it starts compressing and then brings up a box saying
Quote:
" The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x24
INVALID FIELD IN CDB
I have also tried using Handbrake to rip the dvd's but that scans the dvd saying its scanning the titles but then just freezes
Anyone have any ideas please?? Its an Intel iMac.
BTW purely legal, making copies of ones I've bought for daughter so she can take on holiday with us
Thanks

Some DVDs especially those made by sony and disney are mastered with bad sectors on purpose as part of the copy protection process. Mac the Ripper is not very good when it comes to these discs. I have to use my wife's pc with dvd fab decrypter to copy these discs. It is not the fault of the imac by any means. Every disc I have copied except for those made by sony or disney since I got my imac have been perfect. Toast could be giving an error because the file from Mac the Ripper may not be playable. Try playing them first with the dvd player or VLC player to see if they work. If they do, make sure you have updated toast to the latest version. Good luck>

  • Only hear 8 mins of audio after dvd being burned. help please

i keep trying to burn an avi file to idvd, but once its burned only the first 8 minutes of audio can be heard after that video looks fine but it becomes a silent film, i called apple and they said to go to advanced and click on delete encoded assets and that should fix the problem, but it didint. Has anyone had this problem and if so did you find a way to fix it?
    id appreciate any help!
    Thanks in advance

There's a known issue with 12 bit audio and iDVD. But its issue is syncing when encoded. It's unlikely that's the issue but it might. That's out of my area. See these topics: Re: Audio not in sync, Re: Audio sync problem when burning to DVD and So many audio problems.
They might have a suggestion you can try. Have you tried the disk image route yet?

hi guys i have 2 ? 1 my daughters iphone is trying to update on my mac cant get it off help please ,,, 2 i have an old apple id and when i try to up date it keeps looking for the password how do i delete this old apple id help

    Hi.
I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID.  Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine.

  • On external monitor: GOOD.    after render & dvd: BAAAAD.   help, please!

Hi, I edited a 60i NTSC video from a canon XL2, and it looks fine on the external monitor (TV), the FCP preview and everything. It even looks good when I export a QT mov with no compression.
But as soon as I burn it on iDVD and play it on a DVD player, the whole interlacing business goes terribly, terribly wrong.
I've tried all possible exporting settings, but it doesn't work. Should I de-interlace the clips? I've gathered from reading the forums that it might help, but it sounds like a desperate solution, since the text should be interlaced but not the video?
I mean... what did I do wrong? Isn't ot supposed to just work straight-through with the NTSC DV Easy Setup and changing only to "None" on the compressing settings at export?
    Any help, please? Anybody?

    oh, OK.
For exporting, I used the Export>Quicktime movie, just like you said, using the current setting (i.e. Compression:None)
The DVD player was connected to a PAL TV, but it's OK because the DVD player can read anything. I know because I've watched NTSC as well as PAL dvd movies before.
The Canon XL2 the Mac is connected to, via Firewire, is NTSC, connected via RCA to the PAL TV. Which means the signal I'm watching is Black & White... (I know this sounds WEIRD)... but it's O.K. because what I'm really checking as I edit is the interlacing problem that I got when playing the DVD on the dvd player.... : the BAD problem.
How bad? Really bad. Any sudden movement, or panning of objects with vertical lines, like a painting or a building looks all wobbly and curvey and blurry and wrong, which is unnacceptable for the project I'm doing, as it is a professional work (Meaning that I'm charging money for it, despite the crazy assemble of different products and formats I'm using).
I've gotten things that look good before, but never on Final Cut Pro.. I'm new to the program, and to Mac, and this is the first video I'm exporting to a DVD on this platform.

  • I think I killed my Mac, trying to install XP - Help, please!

I am at a loss. I cannot boot my computer in OSX, but when I try to boot it will the install disk....it comes to the first screen for what language, but then says OSX cannot be installed on this computer.
Perhaps it is still on the computer and that is why...but I cannot find it, though I am not that savy with this stuff. I tried holding down the option key and it just lists a windows start up disk...but that is not working as it just recycles trying to install windows xp.
    oh my, I am sick.
If anyone can help, please let me know!!

It is common when installing Windows for the install disk to have to reboot the machine to proceed to the next step. People familiar with Windows installation are not thrown by this - but a person new to the task might be confused.
In Boot Camp this can throw you off because it does not prompt you as to your job in the procedure.
If you don't do anything your Mac will boot back to OSX and Windows will remain un-finished. Here it is: if you are installing Windows and the machine closes down and re-boots, always hold down the 'option' key (or if you like - the 'c' key) so you can avoid an automatic boot to OSX - choose the 2nd hard drive icon. Windows always wants to boot back to Windows - to finish the job.
If you want to erase your Boot Camp error - just boot to OSX, open Boot Camp Assistant (found in "Utilities" which is found in the Applications folder) and choose to create one partition. Your OSX install will not be hurt by this.
If you want to wipe your computer completely (as if factory new) in order to install OSX from scratch then first install your OSX DVD and boot (holding down the option key or else the c key - then select the disk icon) - after language selection wait for the tool bar at the top to appear, select utilities > disk utility and click the hard drive (listed at the top of the list) and then click 'partition'. Then under 'volume scheme' select 'current' and create a 3 or 4 partition (takes a minute) and then undo this and create a one partition. This should blank-out the computer hard drive completely for you to start fresh - all will be erased.
If your Mac will not boot properly and you happen to have materials on your machine that you MUST save or recover, then you will need different help than I describe here.

  • The Best DVD ripping/burning/converting software

I have herd alot about this Mac the Ripper deal but am having real trouble laying my hands on it. Is there perhaps other software that may allow me to Rip/Burn/Convert at my leisure, or will I have to resort to boot camp and Alcohol 120%? Thanks y'all

I certainly hope you're ripping your own DVD's, and not those belonging to, say, your friend, NetFlix, or your local video store.
Anyway, I very highly recommend using HandBrake to convert the DVD video into something more suitable. Just pop in the disc and play with the settings. It comes pre-loaded with presets for creating video for the iPod, tv, and PlayStation 3. (An XBox 360 preset is in the works.)
I personally recommend AVC/H.264 video (set to constant quality: 64%) with AAC 5.1 sound (set to 384 Kbps). It's a slow encoding process, but you'll be impressed with the output -- more so if your Mac is hooked up to an HDTV and home theater system.
If your legally-purchased DVD has encryption that HandBrake can't handle, then download MacTheRipper, and use that to extract a clean VIDEO_TS folder; then point HandBrake to the VIDEO_TS folder.

  • New mac user needs imac g3 help

hi iam a new mac user.i just picked up a used snow imac g3 600mhz from a garage sale, and i was trying to figure out a couple things with it.when i turn it on it boots too mac osx 10.3.5,but the screen color is all grey, but readable.i tried too change the colors too default but it still stays grey.i know though when it boots and shuts down it will change color.from what i read it could need a firmware upgrade to fix this?or is this common with the imac series?
the only thing i could find out about it is that it needs mac 9.1 installed too do the firmware upgrade.another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2? also how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks

Hi Caddy and welcome to Apple Discussions,
how do i check my current firmware version on mac osx?any help would be great thanks
There are a couple ways to do it.
The easiest is boot the computer up and click and hold on the Apple slide down and release on "about this Mac". Click on the "more info" button. A window will open up and "hardware" will be selected. If not select it. Look down that window for "Boot ROM version".
    It should say "4.1.9 f1.
    If not go here:
    http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm
The definitive site on this problem.
and there it says one of the symptoms:
"S2 -- iMac starts up normally but with dim or strangely coloured display."
So that sounds like your problem.
another question is can i dual boot 9.1 and osx and be able to switch bewteen the 2?
Yes that will be no problem at all. !0.3.2 actually supports booting into Classic.
BTW congratulations that 600 Snow is like the Jaguar of iMac CRTs.

  • PE3 crashes when I click "burn dvd". Any help, please?

Hello. My PE3 works just fine, except for one problem, that has plagued me for some time. When I finish editing, then complete the menu (title) page, I click "burn dvd". Invariably, PE closes. When I re-open the project and redo the menu- the forced closure didn't save the menu- it works fine, every time. I tried saving the project and re-opening before burning, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm running XP, Service Pack 3, with 2.80 GHz and 1 Gig of ram. Any help would be appreciated.

  • DVD Studio Pro won't burn - HELP please

I have DVD Studio Pro 4.0 and I've exported a sequence from FCE 4.0. I've set my preferences (HD), imported the sequence (or asset) and then I selected burn - "Format Successful" comes up and nothing else happens. Am I doing something wrong? I know it works because I've done it before.

Are you trying to build an HD DVD rather than a standard defintion DVD? I've never tried to build an HD DVD... does that format also use the VIDEO_TS structure?
A simple alternative to finding and removing the troublesome VIDEO_TS folder is to select a new location for the build -- an empty folder on your desktop, in your documents folder, wherever.
Or, if the contents and/or design of the disc hasn't changed since the last time you built it, find the current VIDEO_TS folder and use that to burn your disc rather than building it anew.

  • Switching iTunes from mac to pc - having problems - help, please!!!!

I have an iPod and a Shuffle and all my music is in iTunes on my mac.
I want to now have my iTunes on my pc instead. I understand my iPod is not compatible, so I plan to re-format it once I get iTunes all squared away.
I downloaded iTunes onto my pc and...
Issue #1: When I open i Tunes I receive an error (no code) that says: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." I can hit "ok" on the message and iTunes opens up.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same message. True, I have other CD burning software on the computer but don't want to delete it. Don't know if this is really an issue except for having to bypass that error message every time I open iTunes....
Issue #2: I Exported my iTunes library from the mac onto an external hard drive formated in fat32 thinking I could either import the music into iTunes on my pc, or, even better, use the external drive to store the music for use with iTunes on my pc.
Ideally, I'd store the music on the external hard drive and use iTunes on my PC with my iPod and Shuffle.
BUT, after searching the support site and discussions and trying the suggestions I found, I stil have no music showing up in iTunes on the pc.
Can anyone help me? I've spent quite a bit of time on this already and I really can't keep wasting the time. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

First you will want to look for updates to your other CD burning programs that will possiably fix this issue or try uninstalling reinstalling both iTUnes and quicktime.
Im not that mac savy, but on the windows side of things, iTUnes is very picky on what is where.you can recreat the Library on your PC if the file you saved from the mac is a "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file but that would be a hard thing and a mess cuz iTUnes for windows doesn't "Watch" folders. So if that Nickelback song you have was on C:/Mac/Music or however a mac does folders, then it would have to be in the EXACT location in windows. If not your going to have a very sloppy library full of ! marks.
But if you want you can recreate the library following these instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

  • Locked out of my user account - can anyone help please!?

    Hi all
I have a rather annoying issue that only happened a few hours ago and I have come here to ask for help if I may because I do not have the experience to resolve it on my own.
Here goes.. Using my 2009 mbp, running snow leopard 10.6, computer hangs with spinning ball, try to shutdown and it just hangs. So I shutdown with the power button and when I power up I find I cannot access my standard user account with everything in it - I get a message saying " cannot access account at this time due to an error" .
The mbp I'm using has two drives : one intel ssd for osx and program's and a hitachi hdd for storage. The hitachi drive is in a caddy in the place of the SuperDrive and the SuperDrive is now in an external enclosure and the intel ssd in the hard drive bay.
    Things I have tried :
I have booted in safe mode - same error message.
Cleared PRAM - same error message.
Booted from system disc and tried to reset password - same error message.
Ran disc utility from cd and I see that the hitachi hdd is not mounted - it will not let me mount the volume, first aid sees that it's still alive but that's all it will do.
The intel ssd checks out just fine in disc utility first aid - I repaired permissions.
I suspect the hitachi hdd is at fault but would really like someone's educated opinion if that's ok? As all my data is on it and stupidly I have not backed all of it up.
I am having to send this from my iPhone !
    Many thanks
    David

It sounds like the Hitachi with your home folder may have died or become problematic, in one way or another. This won't solve that problem, but it may help to get you to be able to at least log in. These instructions are for resetting a password with a CD, not your issue, but it will allow you to create a new admin account, so at least you will be able to login. Not sure what will solve the problem with the Hitachi, if it won't mount because, for all intents and purposes, it's dead. If that's the case--and can't be certain it is--you might need some kind of recovery software. (Google that for Mac. There are many available programs.) That booting in Safe Mode doesn't fix the issue is not a good sign.
Make certain you give this new account admin privileges.
Reset Mac Password – without a CD or Boot Drive
reset mac password Using a pretty nifty trick you can reset a forgotten Mac password without a Mac OS X installer CD/DVD or any kind of boot drive or recovery partiton, and without having an Apple ID. This is basically the be-all-end-all approach if nothing else works, because it’s guaranteed to get you back into a Mac when the other options are available, and it works in literally all versions of OS X. The steps may seem a little intimidating at first but I assure you it’s easy if you follow them exactly, here is exactly how to do this in three stages:
Stage 1) Boot into Single User Mode and remove a setup file
Restart the Mac holding down the Command+S keys, this will take you into Single User Mode and it’s Terminal interface
You’ll need to check the filesystem first:
        fsck -fy
Next, you must mount the root drive as writeable so that changes will save:
        mount -uw /
Now, type the following command exactly, followed by the enter key:
        rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
        reset forgot mac password
After removing the applesetupdone file, you need to reboot, type ‘reboot’ and hit enter
Stage 2) Create a New User Account upon System Boot
You aren’t finished, but the hard part is now over – no more command lines, you’ll now be in the familiar Mac OS X GUI to finish the password reset process. In this step we just create a new user account as if you just got a new Mac:
Upon reboot, you will be presented with the traditional “Welcome Wizard” startup screen just like when you first get a Mac
Follow the welcome wizard and create a new user account – making the account name different from the account whose password you want to recover
Continue on and boot into Mac OS X with this newly created user account, this new user account is an Administrator and has administrative access

  • Need a great mac compatible DVD-BluRay burner

I have a late 2011 iMac, 32 GB memory, with a LaCie 4tb external thunderbolt hd.  I burned finished DVD's on the mac's 'super drive' or whatever it's called, but I can only burn regular DVD's that won't hold more than 45 minutes or so of any quality, plus the peeps said some wouldn't play on their t.v..  I need to purchase a DVD (bluRay also would be great) burner that can burn layers or large files with high quality and dependability.  Also, I purchased a quikie el cheapo DVD creator for menu's because I don't need the complications right now of big programs, but am wondering if it really matters what authoring/burning program you use (please say no).  It would seem that if I export my files in the proper format for DVD or BlueRay, the quality should transfer?  (Shouldn't the NTSC,H.S64, AAC 48kHz do for DVD, or H.264 Blue-ray 1080i 29.97 format options as supplied in PP work?)  Learning, ever learning.
    Thanks much in advance.

I have mixed HD (Panasonic P2 cards) and SD media in my sequences, so I need to stay with MPEG-2 until I get to the point of all HD content then.
If you are mixing HD and SD footage it is best to stay in an SD sequence (unless you absolutely must go HD for some reason) and author a regular DVD. If you up-scale SD content to HD you will loose quality.
    nadinefromwa wrote:
I, for some reason, thought the faster the burn the better the quality but not so.  I will stay slow.  And the bitrate has always been a mystery to me.  It seems like if I leave everything at the default in PP and Encore, I'll be okay.
The burn speed itself has nothing to do with the video quality of the final DVD. Lower burn speed simply means that will avoid write errors during the burn process. The video quality is determined by your encoder settings; The bitrate in general should not exceed 7.5 mb/s and you should use a constant bitrate for content under 60 min and variable bitrate for longer videos. Adobe Media Encoder certainly has more settings but I'm not that familiar with this particular piece of software.

One question - I found I could bring in my mxf files and size them to fit the frame in premier pro with the SD footage. Do you think that would create an issue for the final product?  (Although I didn't do that on the previous DVD's that didn't work)  I haven't attempted a burn yet from this mixed bag.
You would be better off asking Adobe-specific questions either in the Adobe forums or maybe over on the COW. I personally have very little experience with either Encore or Premiere Pro.
As is the case with most authoring software Encore will create DVD Images that can be played on your machine prior to burning. That means you can do tests to try out your workflows and settings without having to physically burn a DVD.

    nadinefromwa wrote:
Also then, it sounds like I shouldn't need to worry about the new burner until I reach the point of wanting to burn bluray?  The iMac super drive should be fine for the regular DVD's for now?
Absolutely. Blu-ray is for HD and DVD is for SD.
