N00b Question - Does my email use my iPad Memory?

I have my Gmail and work email linked to my iPad (16GB - received as a gift) and I am wondering if the emails - such as my sent, saved, and filed emails - use up storage space/memory on the iPad?

If you are using the Mail app (or one of the third-party email apps from the store) then yes, your downloaded emails and their attachments will use up space on your iPad. If you are accessing your accounts via a browser then they will probably use up some space in your browser's cache.

When I send emails using my iPad, some recipients are telling me that I am sending them blank emails.  I've had some of them forward the emails back to me so I can take a look and it seems that my message is actually there but the text is white.  Interestingly enough, I was a Windows user just a few months ago and I was on the receiving end of this same problem with someone who was sending emails from her iPhone.  I don't believe it is happening every time but if it happens even once it's a problem.  Any idea what's going on?

Oddly enough, having reported the problem it appears to have fixed itself. There may be some combination swipe gesture that triggers it is all I can think because I suddenly manged to zoom my display x3 by double tapping three fingers. Took me a while to sort this out but then when I got back home I could suddenly see all my emails again. Bizarre!

  • HT4865 Does iCloud email use 1024 bit or 2048 SSL encryption?

In Security Now! Podcast #441, http://twit.tv/show/security-now/411 they discuss the need for SSL encryption to move to 2048 bit to be more secure. What level of encryption is iCloud email using?

Sorry I didn't make my question specific enough. I'm referring to the encryption used in the browser while using the mail app on iCloud. I believe gmail currently uses 1024 SSL but will be changing to 2048 in several months. The reason being that a 1024 bit key can theoretically be broken my dedicated hardware (costing millions of dollars, I might add) in around one year. Listen to the link above for more details. This takes an extreme effort to crack, but given that it is possible I wanted to know what Apple does.

  • Why does deleted email reload on ipad

Frequently and irritatingly, my optimum online email reloads itself onto my mobile devices (ipad, iphone) even when i have deleted them and emptied the trasth.
    Any solutions?

This happened to me too when I started using my Ipad and downloading email from my POP email account.  I performed some tests to prove a theory and that is that using POP on the IPAD makes the email application "Mirror" the mail account on the ISP server.  So what that meant is that when I downloaded my emails to my laptop - I had that email package set to delete the emails from the server after download.  SO...since it appears that the IPAD mail app "mirrors" what is on the server - it sees that there are no emails on the server so it removes them from the IPAD mail innbox - effectively "mirroring" the server.  SO to fix this, I set my laptop mail application to leave my email messages on the server for up to 30 days.  I expect that after 30 days my Ipad email will disappear again.   I guess I can live with this but think it would be a good fix if Apple could figure out what the other POP compliant email packages do to keep from "mirroring" the email server account.  I also use a droid phone to download my emails from the same server and this disappearing act never happened with either the Droid default mail app nor with the 3rd party Droidmail application.
To fix the disappearing act - change your settings in your other POP compliant mail application to stop removing emails from the server.  Hopefully Apple will try to work out a change.

  • HT2534 How do I purchase an iTunes voucher delivered by email using my iPad ?

How do I purchase an iTunes voucher delivered by email on my iPad. Tried iTunes apple store and apple via safari

I don't believe that you can, though I may have missed something. Purchasing gift vouchers, to the best of my knowledge, can be done only through iTunes on a computer.

  • Why does the JRE use so much memory?

I know this question has been asked a million times in one form or another but I have not seen a complete answer yet. When I compile and run the following code under WindowsXP pro, it appears that the JRE is using 3.1MB or RAM. When I run a similar program using C++ the program only uses 630k.
    public class HelloWorld
    public static void main(String args[])
    System.out.println("Hello World");
Why 3MB to show "HelloWorld"? I love Java, it is much easier and more enjoyable to develop with but our applications appear to use large amounts of memory. I realize that making calls to the runtime object to check the amount of "heap" memory we are using will probably show much less memory being used but Task Manager shows 3MB. It is sometimes hard to convince my fellow developers of he benefits of Java when there are strange issues like this.
    Thanks in advance

Java uses that much memory because every time you start a Java program, even this small, it loads into RAM the whole Java Virtual Machine. Which is itself a very large C++ program - on the order of several hundred thousand lines. Compare that to your C++ HelloWorld program - and you see the reason for a difference...
So a real question is, is it possible to write a modern Java VM such that it uses space proportional to the size/complexity of the Java program that it executes. Partially that's possible - for example I understand that say native GUI libraries are separate from the main JVM dll, so when you don't use AWT/Swing, you don't waste space with related native code. However, for the core JVM it's probably very difficult to separate parts of functionality such as the interpreter, the dynamic compiler, the runtime system, the garbage collector, the serviceability stuff, etc. They are very interdependent, and thus, probably unless you have this goal from the beginning (and ready to sacrifice some performance/maintainability for it), you can't do that.
There exist, however, a bunch of other JVMs of all sizes, say those used in mobile phones (or even smart cards!), that consume a lot less memory. They, however, typically implement only a subset of the full Java functionality. On the other hand, the HotSpot VM that comes with Sun's JDK, that you probably use, is a full-fledged JVM that implements everything, can be used for huge server apps, etc. - no wonder its minimum memory consumption is a few megs.

  • Does photo stream use up physical memory

I have backed up my photos to my hard drive and deleted them from my camera roll however they are duplicated in my photo stream. Is this using up physical memory on my phone

Photo Stream photos are only stored in iCloud for 30 days...to give you time to save to your devices. Of course if you've already saved these to your device then there are no longer temporary storage.

  • While in safari , I can't print from aol email using my ipad air

Using safari on my iPad air , I was able to print my aol emails. All of a sudden, now I can't.

    Hello, Rawwong1.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try forcing all applications to close and power cycle the device.  Once this is done test tot see if you can print.
iOS: Force an app to close

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

I would recommend setting up your email account on your iPad and print your messages through the Mail App.

  • HT1694 Hotmail- cannot use the delete key to delete email using my iPad

I have the new iPad.   I use hotmail and everything was fine for a couple of months.   Today I tried to delete an email from the deleted folder but the delete button did not work.   Then I tried to delete an email from the inbox and that didn't work either.  Help!

    Hi joseph,
I too faced a similar kind of a problem since the event data_changed is not trigerred but when i again clicked on the button the event trigerred , what i am trying to convey is if you double click on the push button with 3 seconds gap between clicks then the desired functionality works ( It worked for me ).
Just try if this works for you.

Why Does My iPad Say "Cannot Connect to Server"?
    http://www.ehow.co.uk/info_8693415_ipad-say-cannot-connect-server.html
    iPad Mail
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/mail/
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Why does GROUP email using a gmail account crash while using MAIL on mac?

I use MAIL for all of my email accounts-aol, mac, gmail,rr, everything is working well.
BUT when I try to send an email from a gmail accoutn to a GROUP using the GROUP list in ADDRESS BOOK , the MAIL program says that the names are not recognized, and then its difficult to delete the email.
    What's wrong?
    THANKS!!!

First, make sure the group is recognized. It should add all the contacts in the group to the address field if it was recognized.
If that is good, then there might be a bad address in the group. I have seen problems with a single malformed address blocking the whole group from sending.
You'll have to just look through each address to see if you see anything.
If the whole group doesn't need to see all the others, you can try splitting the group in half, send the message. If it goes through, send the other half. Keep breaking halves into halves and testing. Eventually, you'll find the bad message.
I don't know of Mail's Connection Doctor or the log files in Console might identify the bad actor. Could be worth a look before trying the above brute force method.

  • Email using too much memory

My email usage is at 548mb although I've deleted most of the emails.  When I receive and delete emails, it still adds to the total usage.  I'm using an email account on a pop3server from my PC.  What can I do to dump the memory and prevent this from happening again.  Many thanks.

First thanks for the fast reply.
I check the email usage in ->general->usage
As for now its 681mb. Easier today it was 678 and then I deleted about 30 mails from one acounts sent box and then deleted the same ones from trash. After that it had grown from 678-680.
About afew weeks ago when i first noticed the big usage it was just over 500.
I often send emails with videos and it seem as for every mail sent and replied it grow fast.
I have about 10 accounts set up via pop3 and many important emails that I need in the phone and since I depend on emails daily I really don't want to mess anything up.
If I did delete all settings and imported them again would this issue not happen again?
And is there any other way to fix it without having to delete accounts?
Mail seem to work just fine in all other ways.
The reason I need a solution is because it takes up a lot of unnecessary space that would be much needed for other things. As for now I need to keep deleting music and apps if I want to capture video without emptying my earlier photos/videos.
