N100 Will Not Boot - Motherboard problem?

Hi - I have N100 and it seems that the notebook will not boot at this time. Power Button is pushed with battery light blinking red momentarily to geen and then notebook shuts off while display of boot screen is not shown, could not hear hard drive spinning, or see CPU fan moving.
I've opened many covers on the bottom to make that everything is tight with still no success.
Does another have a similar problem? It seems more like a motherboard issue, which is very serious but would like to confirm someone elese's experience.

If black screen comes with power light on and no beeps, it is mostly likely motheboard. You can cofirm it by removing memory or hard drive. If you hear beeps, then motherboard is fine. Otherwise, it is failure of MB. I called Lenovo and was told MB replacement costs $475. The cheapest MB from ebay is $200. So it is not worth to replace. Time to buy a new laptop.

U410 will not boot - SSD problem?

6 month old Lenovo U410 owner here. The laptop has been at Lenovo service in Poland in its first month with a similar issue. I got the laptop back with the papers saying they only reinstalled Windows. As I opened it up to upgrade RAM memory, I discovered that the battery connector was damaged (half of the plastic wasn't there), and that the screw which originally had the warranty sticker on it was in a different hole (you can see remainings of the sticker on it).
Few days ago my laptop started having problems with hibernation and sleep mode. First I tried to update the video drivers, then to "refresh" Windows using Recovery Mode. After this the laptop wouldn't start anymore (BSOD).
I then downloaded Windows 8.1 from my MSDNAA account, and tried to install Windows in RAID mode and did not succeed (I loaded RAID drivers from an USB stick, but the drives wouldn't show). I managed to reinstall Windows in AHCI mode, but only after deleting all the partitions on the HDD.
The laptop starts only if I choose AHCI mode (compatible mode causes BSOD and RAID mode makes the laptop restart and show me the boot menu).
Intel Rapid Storage Technology - shows my SATA HDD (466 GB) and internal empty port 0 (here it would normally show the mSATA SSD 24 GB). Diskpart also shows only the SATA HDD. BIOS shows both devices.
I removed the SSD and the laptop starts faster (20-30 seconds instead of 2-3 min). Sleep and hibernate mode are also working again. I suspect that the mSATA SSD is broken. Any advices?

Welcome to the Forums.
Your findings about the mSATA SSD being faulty is most likely possible but one way to find out is to run a diagnostics on it. Having both drives inserted and running Windows in AHCI mode, download and install HD Tune and run an error scan on the mSATA SSD. If you get an error or if the diagnostic hangs then you may need to get the mSATA SSD replaced.
Alternatively, you can also try to using a USB to mSATA adapter to run the test. If you get no errors, check this guide as other users find it helpful in restoring their U310/U410 unit.

Will not boot - motherboard 6531 V1

My system unexpectedly stop booting, the status LEDs on the back indicate it is stopping at the memory tests. I have changed out my SDRAM and experience the same result.
Anyone have ideas?

2 DIMMS of 256MB is what is installed. The system has been running for 2 years without errors. ;(

I have recently built a system with an MSI KT4V-L motherboard, 512 PC2700 Ram, Athlon 2GH Chip, the system works fine with the FSB set at 100MHz, as soon as the system is set to 133MHz then the system will not boot to either windows or a boot disk, is this a problem with the motherboard or a conflict with the ram modules

Has this board got a jumper to toggle 100/133 - if it has you need to set it to 133 and also - set the clock frequency in the BIOS to 133.

Macbook Pro will not boot up normally ***Not Normal Problems***

Ok. I have an older 17" Macbook pro 2.33 (10.6 fully updated) that will not boot up in normal mode. When I boot it shows "blocks" of different colors and will not get past the blue screen sometimes. When it does get passed the the blue or grey screen it is a split screen of white back ground with large black blocks seperating the sides. I have tried swapping out harddrives with a known working one with an OSX image on it-no good. I have tried swapping out ram-same thing. I reset the SMC and PRAM-only colors changed in the blocks. I have ran disk utilites disk and permisions with no problems. I can't boot into a restore disk using the c key during boot, It locks up at the same screen. Nothing works except safe mode. I can boot into safe mode and everything works just fine with normal screen and all. Now I tried runing the Lion installer thinking it is and driver issue but I can't get Lion to boot to the hard drive and Snow leopard just reboots back to the same screen. So how can I get Lion to install or Snow Leopard?
What can I do? I noticed this last weekend when I tried to reboot my MB Pro and it started this. Well Apple pushed and update last friday - I needed to restart it again and this happends. I thought it was a logic board at fist until it booted fine in safe mode.

Sorry. What I mean is I selected the SL boot up in the start up panel and it would not boot into the cd. The CD rom sounds like it just keeps reading with it slowly loading from grey screen to blue screen to the Block screen. Almost like it is booting into normal mode from the hard drive.
What I can't understand is why it runs fine is Safe mode?
Also why do I get a " this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" message on my hard drive when trying to install Lion in safe mode? Well why not it's the only hard drive in the computer?

Last night, I was doing a lot of custom file sharing settings using the include enclosed folders option at the bottom of the Get Info window.
Question 1: Could that file sharing process have messed things up?
In an effort to get things going........ A few weeks back, I used Disk Utility to create a 2nd partition, with the intent of installing Ubuntu Linux there. I never attempted the install, as far as I can remember, while playing with the Ubuntu Live CD. So, I thought I would install 10.5.6 from the CD in the 2nd partition. But I get an error message that says "The installer could not create the folder "/Volumes/Ubuntu 9.10/BaseSystem.pkg.161nDNDdQ.""
Question 2: I also shared that partition, could that have caused the OS install failure?
Question 3: If I understand the book correctly, I can try to install the OS from the CD on the 1st partition, and not lose my data, correct? Unfortunately, I don't have any backup for the data, as I don't own any drives large enough yet to accommodate the data on the drive.
Question 4: Anyone have any other thoughts as to what ent wrong?

Sometimes, it just pays to think on a problem. I awoke thinking, if it will boot the OS X install CD, it ought to boot my Ubuntu Live CD. And then, maybe I can change permissions on the first partition. As soon as I thought that, it occurred to me, if the problems are with the permissions, what if I used the OS X disk, and erased (formatted) the Ubuntu partition. That should set all the permissions on that partition back to default. Would OS X install then to the Ubuntu partition?
You better believe it did!! I'm typing this from the Mac after updating my 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 in the 2nd partition, and I'm booting from the 2nd partition.
I then did as you suggested, and from the Mac, I repaired the permissions to the first partition. But, the result was the same, there are a few permissions that do not match, and Disk Utility cannot, does not, or will not correct them.
I'm currently downloading the 10.5.8 combo update .dmg file. My thought is to burn that to a disk, and then install it over the version in partition 1. And trust that the current installation on partition 1 does not have any cross linked files that will destroy some data.
I do have some old ATA IDE drives I can hook externally to the Mac, and copy some of the information I have from the Mac to those drives before doing the 10.5.8 install.
Can you think of a better solution?

From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update. I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying. The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk. Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R). Run Disk Utility. Click on the upper left disk icon. Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”? If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced. Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk. If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk. If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up. Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable. A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so. If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one. Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk. (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode. Start Disk Utility. Plug in the new disk. Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
Apply
Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk. If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more. If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally? If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

It sounds like a hardware problem since you are getting no boot, no video and no DVD eject. Make sure that this is a computer problem and not something else. Remove ALL attached devices to the computer, including printers, USB devices, external keyboard and mouse. Remove the main battery. Remove one of the RAM memory modules, so that there is only one RAM memory module in the computer. Try turning on the computer. If there is still no boot and no video, exchange the RAM module and try again. If it still doesn't work, disconnect the power cord, reinstall the main battery and try powering on computer using just battery power. If the computer still doesn't work, you are looking at having the computer fixed at Toshiba-authorized repair center. There is a listing for the repair centers on this website. If there are no repair centers in your area, you can always call the Toshiba Call Center at 800-457-7777 and arrange to have the computer sent to Toshiba's repair depot.

Will not boot up on 1st try

I am having a strange problem, My computer will not boot up on the 1st try after it has been shut off for 2 hrs or more. Here are my specs and then I will go into more detail. I like to use pictures because some of the terminology escapes my vocabulary.

Problem:
After being shut off for more than 2 hours my computer will not boot up on the 1st try. It goes to a message that says"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I shut it down using the power button, wait for the hard drives to stop spinning, and then hit the power again and it starts up just fine. It will restart just fine also as many time as I want to restart it, after it has been running in windows. Once it is running, it runs terrific, no problems at all.
If you go right into the bios after sitting for a while you see this in the boot sequence, notice there is no hard drives(Nvidia Stripe)in the boot sequence.
After shutting it down and starting right back up this is what you see in the boot sequence. This pic is from a different time, thats why the boot sequence is different.
Here is a short youtube video (2:10 sec) made to help show the problem. (I called it a Cold boot Storage problem for another thread) just ignore that.
Things I have done to try to solve the problem:
1. Update the bios
2.I have moved the boot sequence around, Foppy1st, or CD 1st, ect. and even disabled the [USB:HP Photosm] in the boot sequence, Hard Drives are 1st now.
3.Replaced the Mobo Battery thinking that it was not remembering the boot sequence
4.Checked that the Hard Drives are connected to the correct plugs (6-7) on the motherboard, and that the raid connector JP1 was shorted out for Raid 0 and the blue indicator light was flashing.
* Just a note in this area. I did set up the Raid 0 with a tech from MSI because I was having an issue with the initial set up, and I did use the Nvidia raid drivers that came with the motherboard. Pchas01 in another thread thought that this could be part of the issue because it is not necessary to load the drivers when you set up the Motherboard in the Raid mode.
F10 and look in the Raid Array
5. Pulled the jumper off of JP1 and it just went to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" screen much faster, but would never boot up after 5 tries. Put the jumper back in and started up on the 2nd try like the normal problem.
6.Went into the On-Chip ATA devices in the bios and Changed the Raid Mode to an IDE, I cannot F10 and get into the Raid Array now, but I guess that is normal.
Now this is what my boot sequence currently looks like.
That is the point that I am right now. It runs great, games are awesome on it. Its just does not want to start up on the 1st attempt.

I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.

I do have another question. Why is my HP Printer showing up in the Hard drive test, and also why is it showing up in my boot sequence, is this normal?

Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk

Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.

Just what size HD and is the drive Sata II or Sata III?
Vista 32bit .iso You must have a valid installation key, which should be on the COA sticker on the computer, to activate the installation once it completes. ImageBurn to create the .iso disk. Driver page Vista (not 64 bit)

HP A1620N will not boot up

I asked for help last year with my computer that would not boot up. I have finally returned to work on it. It is an HP a1620n with windows xp. I had to install a new ps. Computer still will not boot up, it just gives me the blue hp invent screen. bought and used new thermal paste. Still nothing. Removed and reinstalled memory. No luck. Tried constantly tapping f1, esc, f8, f10, f12 while computer is powering up. No good. Removed hard drive and put it in an external case. Can look at some stuff but not everything. Not sure if its a hardware problem or a software problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

I did go back and look at your previous post about what you have done; I did read where you took the original motherboard out but ended up putting it back in because another board did the same thing. Also see where you have worked on the processer, ram and replaced the power supply, about the only other you really haven’t tested is the hard drive and I would say that would probably be you’re next step.
What is kind of odd is that you haven’t been able to access the bios on the startup that been the most worrisome thing to me. Have you been able to access the bios menu and I’m just not aware of it?
