N240GT MD1G - Resetting resolution

I need help...
I've gotten myself a new graphics card, a MSI N240GT-MD1G to be precise. Not a heavy thing by a long shot, but way better than my integrated piece of  that doesn't even have OpenGL support.
Anyways, I'm having some problems getting the resolution to work properly...
I'm used to running my desktop at 1280*1024 (the max my monitor can handle), but for some reason this graphics card doesn't like anything but 640*480. I've installed several drivers now (it's supposed to use the nvidia ION drivers), and when using a clean install things work great... UNTIL I do anything that requires either a reboot or running in fullscreen.
If I do run a fullscreen application I'm reverting back to 640*480, and it stay that way until I clear the driver and reinstall from skratch. Same if I reboot; When I boot back up I'm at the ugly ol' 640*480.
Can easily be fixed by reinstalling again, but it's a bloody hazzle.
I've also started in Safe Mode where I have removed all old drivers, rebooted back into Safe Mode andreinstalled drivers, but with no more luck. I've also tried various versions of drivers with no noticable differences.
If I enter the nVidia Control panel I get a popup saying it recommends 1280*1024 and whether I want to activate that. If I say YES I get the 15 sec countdown asking if I want to keep the "new" resolution, even if it's still 640*480.
Here's a little DxDiag info:
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.100427-1636)
Language: English (Regional Setting: Norwegian (Bokmål))
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Dell DM051
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A05
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page File: 775MB used, 3162MB available
Here's the link to my PC model
What can I do?!??

1) Go into device manager and uninstall the entry for the monitor/s. Reboot and let Windows install the driver or install the manufacturer's driver from their website.
If still no luck:
2) Type regedit into the run box under the start menu, click the edit --> find and type DefaultSettings.XResolution. Double click the entry called 'DefaultSettings.XResolution' and change the value to 500. Find the entry for DefaultSettings.YResolution and change the value to 400. Reboot your system and see if that sorts it.
If you're worried about editing the registry, make a backup first.

I am not able to run presentations from my ThinkPad W530 while duplicating the monitor to a beamer. The monitor will flicker and reset its resolution every minute. I have already tried updating drivers, setting BIOS mode to discrete, using different resolutions, but nothing helped. As such, the device is useless when I would need it most importantly, to give presentations.
Thanks in advance for any help in resolving this really disturbing issue.

Are you attaching it via VGA or DisplayPort?

  • Windows XP Pro Desktop - Screen Resolution and Color Quality

When synchronizing my Zire after many successful and no problems the XP Pro screen resolution reverted to the lowest profile.
I can reset the resolution to the True color 1024 x 768 but after a minute or two it reverts again.
    1. Reinstalled driver for Intel video on Compaq D510C motherboard and get same problems as well as corrupted looking graphics on screen.
    2. Switched to a known good monitor and same problems (which I did not think was the problem but did to verify).
    3. Installed new gForce5200fx graphics card and video still reverts and is corrupted looking even when in higher reset resolution.
    4. Created new user to see if user profile was corrupted and still reverts and is corrupted looking even when in higher reset resolution.

  • External monitor resolution problems with Mountain Lion

I have a problem with my external monitor (Samsung LS19B150NS) and Mountain Lion (running on unibody Mac Mini). Each time I reboot OSX the resolution get reset from native 1366 x 768 to something lower. The display is connected via DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. Some observations:
    - I tried selecting "Best for..." option or "Scaled" (set on 1366 x 768 or 1360 x 768). The problem is still there
    - Sometimes resoltuion might stay alright for several reboots, but then the problem re-appears again
    - Sleep mode doesn't reset resolution
    - Other monitors work fine via the same adapter
    - The Samsung LS19B150NS work perfectly well with other Win PCs
Any suggestions how to fix it?

  • Apple TV starts, and then TV loses HDMI signal

I moved my ATV 2 from a newer 1080 HDTV to an older 720 tv, and now the ATV starts and displays apple logo and after 30-45 secs I get a message on the tv that the hdmi signal is not detected.
I suspect that the ATV is sending a 1080 signal that the tv can't use, is there a way to reset resolution or to defaults via remote?
    Is it something else?

I ended up reconnecting the ATV2 to the original TV and had to change the resolution to 480. I was then able to see the main screen, and change the res to 720p 60mhz.
It is odd though, the ATV was set to Auto for screen, and displayed during startup, but was unable to display main screen.

  • Dumb misstake

How to reset resolution on a G5 with Windows keyboard?
Accidently left it in projector resolution, my display now says it doesnt accept resolution.

    yacinexm,
One humble comment about Don's instructions.  You do not have to wait two hours after pulling the plug to test your machine.  If you rob the motherboard of power for a couple of minutes and then try a reboot, it might just work.  If that does not work, then by all means, give it the two hours or more to discharge all capacitors and guarantee that no residual power lurks behind to maintain the undesirable parameters held in RAM chips.  His comment did not imply that two hours before testing was manditory.

  • Mac Air 13 running Windows 7 not properly recognizing external monitor

My Macbook Air 13 running Windows 7 Pro through Bootcamp is no longer properly recognizing an external Apple 27 inch monitor since the latest package of windows updates. When plugged in, the external display duplicates that of the laptop (both being identified as screen "1") and both at resolution 800x600. Attempts to reset resolution to appropriate levels fails. Also function to restore to an earlier date/update point won't oblige, claiming unatohrized and "catastrophic failure." Any suggestions?

This a work around and its work for now untill Parrellel provide a fix for thier programe.
CPU throttle will work for this issue by scalling down the process for your Parrellel for mac. Just remember anything you want to use your parrellel you have to run cputhrottle script in your terminal
Start Active Monitor on your MAC and pay attention to prl_vm_app CPU usage
Note that when you start using your windown on your mac via parrellel the prl_vm_app cpu usage runs over 100 and when that happens your mac start to get hot and by keeping this down using cpu throttle your mac stay cooler and doesnt get hot.
Downlaod CPU throttle from this website and install.  http://www.willnolan.com/cputhrottle/cputhrottle.htm
Open a terminal on your mac and run ./cputhrottle pid 50 (you can check your PID for prl_vm_app running active monitor on mac)
The value 50 can be decrease or increase but remember the more you increase value your mac will start to run hot so keeping at 50 is recommended.
I know this issue have been around for a while and this will help keeping your Mac cooler when running parrelle on mac

  • IMac 5.5, OS 10.6.8 During startup, the screen aspect changes so that the image is larger than the screen; I have to scroll to find top, bottom, left, right extremes.

Screen display aspect ration suddenly changed while I was online so that I have to scroll to see the edges of the display: up, down, left, right.  I rebooted the computer and the problem persists.

System Preferences->Displays->Display and reset resolution to desired size. Don't know of anything that would change that except possibly a failing graphics card.

    Controlling the Post-Startup  Environment
Most Macintosh users know about holding the Shift key down to prevent extensions from  loading, but there are numerous startup modifiers that affect  the state of the system after the boot process finishes.
    * Shift causes the Mac to boot without extensions, which is  useful for troubleshooting extension conflicts. If you hold  down Shift after all the extensions have loaded but before the  Finder launches, it also prevents any startup items from  launching.
    * Spacebar launches Apple's Extensions  Manager early in the startup process so you can enable or  disable extensions before they load. Casady & Greene's  Conflict Catcher, if you're using it instead of Extensions  Manager, also launches if it sees you holding down the  spacebar, or, optionally, if Caps Lock is activated. Conflict  Catcher also adds the capability to configure additional  startup keys as ways of specifying that a particular startup  set should be used. Choose Edit Sets from the Sets menu, select  a set in the resulting dialog and click Modify. In the  sub-dialog that appears, you can specify a startup key and  check the checkbox to make it effective.
    * Option, if held down as the Finder  launches, closes any previously open Finder windows. On stock  older Macs, holding down Option does nothing at startup by  default, although some extensions may deactivate if Option is  held down when they attempt to load; see below for Option's  effect on new Macs and Macs with Zip drives.
    * Control can cause the Location Manager to prompt you to  select a location. Although Control is the default, you can  redefine it in the Location Manager's Preferences dialog, and  since Control held down at startup also activates Apple's  MacsBug debugger (see below), you may wish to pick a different  key combination.
    * Command turns virtual memory off until  the next restart.
    * Shift-Option disables extensions other than Connectix's RAM  Doubler (and MacsBug - see below). To disable RAM Doubler but  no other extensions, hold down the tilde (~) key at startup.
    Choosing Startup Disks
Not surprisingly, many of the startup modifiers affect the  disk used to boot the Mac. A number of these are specific to  certain models of the Macintosh.
    * The mouse button causes the Mac to  eject floppy disks and most other forms of removable media,  though not CD-ROMs.
    * The C key forces the Mac to start up from a  bootable CD-ROM, if one is present, which is useful if  something goes wrong with your startup hard disk. This key  doesn't work with some older Macs or clones that didn't use  Apple CD-ROM drives; they require Command- Shift-Option-Delete  instead (see below).
    * Option activates the new Startup  Manager on the iBook, Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), PowerBook  (FireWire), and slot-loading iMacs. The Startup Manager  displays a rather cryptic set of icons indicating available  startup volumes, including any NetBoot volumes that are  available. On some Macs with Iomega Zip drives, holding down  Option at startup when there is a Zip startup disk inserted  will cause the Mac to boot from the Zip disk.
    * Command-Shift-Option-Delete  bypasses the disk selected in the Startup Disk control panel in  favor of an external device or from CD-ROM (on older Macs).  This is also useful if your main hard disk is having problems  and you need to start up from another device. (On some  PowerBooks, however, this key combination merely ignores the  internal drive, which isn't as useful.)
    * The D key forces the PowerBook (Bronze Keyboard and FireWire)  to boot from the internal hard disk.
    * The T key forces the PowerBook (FireWire)  (and reportedly the Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), though I was  unable to verify that on my machine) to start up in FireWire  Target Disk Mode, which is essentially the modern equivalent of  SCSI Disk Mode and enables a PowerBook (FireWire) to act as a  FireWire-accessible hard disk for another Macintosh.
    Seriously Tweaky Startup Modifiers
Only programmers and the most geeky of users will find these  startup modifiers useful.
    * Control activates Apple's MacsBug debugger as soon as it  loads. If you rely on this frequently, you may want to redefine  the default key for selecting the Location Manager location at  startup from Control to something else.
    * Shift-Option disables extensions and virtual memory but still  loads MacsBug, which would otherwise be disabled by the Shift  key.
    * Command-Option-O-F puts you into Open Firmware mode on  PCI-based Macs and clones. Open Firmware is a cross-platform  firmware standard for controlling hardware that all PCI-based  Macs use. It's mostly of interest to hardware developers, but  it can be a fun way to freak out a new user who's not expecting  to see a command line on the Mac. To exit Open Firmware and  continue booting, type "mac-boot" or "bye" (depending on  Macintosh model) and press Return. For a list of commands you  can enter while in Open Firmware mode, see the  Tech Info Library article.
    Just for Fun
Although Apple has moved away from relatively frivolous  "Easter Eggs" connected with startup modifiers, there are a few  available for old Macintosh models.
    * Command-X-O, when held down at startup on a Macintosh Classic  boots the Classic from a built-in ROM disk.
    * Command-Option-C-I, when held down at startup on a Macintosh  IIci whose date has been set to 20-Sep-89 (the machine's  introduction date), produces some sort of graphical display  that I can't check for lack of a relevant machine. A different  display appears if you hold down Command-Option-F-X at startup  on a Macintosh IIfx with the date set to 19-Mar-90.
