N500 Optical drive will not burn DVD's

When I try to burn a DVD +R with the internal Optiarc DVDRW DL in my N500, the drive acts like it is trying to read the disc and then ejects it and asks for a disc. I have tried several discs, each with the same result. I was able to burn DVD's from the same spindle with no problems on other machines.
The drive reads DVD's and will burn a CD.
Any clues as to what could be done to fix it?
If it's not fixable, can I get a replacement DVD drive. I cannot find one on the Lenovo parts and accessories web pages.
Thanks,
Tim Holmes

  • Combo drive will not burn DVDs

My original internal DVD Drive (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104) is not recognized to burn DVDs. I can burn CDs just fine. When I insert a DVD-R into the tray, the computer searches for the drive and I get the message " Waiting for the drive" followed by the DVD disc being ejected and the message "Waiting for the disc to be inserted." If I insert a CD, the drive works flawlessly. I have no clue where to begin to correct this problem!

Some of these SuperDrives (not a Combo) appeared to develop
defects, sometimes coincidentally after an upgrade to Tiger, but
not necessarily so related. Could be the optical drive has defects.
Will the computer boot from an OS X installer on DVD, so as to
use the Option key on boot to see if you can select the Apple
Hardware Test (as shipped with Macs whose original OS was
on a DVD boot install disc) - or if on CD, run the original Apple
Hardware Test to see if it shows any defect? There may also
be some cryptic log entries in the system reflecting the action
you observed; and that may be helpful in diagnosis.
And in a few cases, a repetitive cleaning of the optical drive's
lens may help it recognize DVDs; they are different than CDs.
There are third party replacement optical drives that can be
used to correctly repair, update or upgrade the older iMac.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My optical drive will not play Dvds..what can I do to fix it

Everytime I put a DVD into the optical drive it will not be recognized or play.  This all began to happen after the latest software update.

Do a SMC and PRAM reset at least 2-3 times for each. You may not be familiar with these resets, if not please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets for instructions.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

  • Optiarc DVD AD-7170A drives will not burn DVD's

My 2007 MacPro has (2) Optiarc DVD AD-7170A drives, and neither will burn a DVD. They each have Firmware Revision: 1.N8
I was able to find 2007 feeds regarding this problem - that I did not see get solved. Has anyone found a solution?
    Many thanks,

Solution: No, not really...  but you can easily replace the drives with )correct) new ones.

Optical drive will not open CD or DVD since upgrading to Lion.

My Macbook Pro has just developed the exact same problem within the last month.  Mine has been working fine since upgrading to Lion (upgraded when it was launched), but it has suddenly stopped playing any DVDs or CDs.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I book a genius bar appointment?

I've never had any issues with it either, I still think it's a good utility.
For burners, an external would be easiest to use as it plugs into a port on the machine. The lacie burners are ok, overall decent software & firmware support. I tore my apart to use the drive in a G4 tower, software all still works!
Get one that can use firewire & usb. the PPC will boot from a firewire external DVD & it could also be used later, if needed, on a machine that doesn't have FW.
Another option is macsales.com here in the States sells the exact same slot drive apple does for about $90. They do ship internationally, about $25 USD to London. If you want an internal solution this would be the way to go.

  • M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker

    Hi,
My M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker and other applications.
I have also had problems burning CDs (unbranded) from Windows XP, built in utility.
Does the multidrive have problems, with cheaper brand disks?
    Just to note,
The laptop has been back to the support guys three times so far with various issues.
    (1) The hard drive failed.
    (2) The multidrive failed.
    (3) The motherboard got replaced, because of power failures, it wouldnt charge the battery or recognise that the power adapter was plugged in.
Note: The harddisk, not the exhaust fan makes the most noise in mine!
    Thanks

    Hi
As far as I know the preinstalled burning software (i.e. record now, drag ndrop) disabled the Windows XP burning option. In this case if you want to use the Movie Maker or Windows media player burning option, you should to enable this possibility.
Please go to driver properties (right click). Please select the Recording tab. The option Enable CD recording on this drive should be marked.
I use the Nero burning software and in my opinion its a one of the best burning programs. Furthermore you should try different CD/DVD manufacturers because some CDs and DVDs are not compatible with some drives. Check the TDK CDs and DVDs. I never had any problems with these medias.
    Best regards

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

  • My optical drive will not read any music cds now or recognize a blank cd in the drive. it might read some data discs. what is wrong with it and how do i fix it?

My optical drive will not read any music cds or recognize a blank cd. it might read some data cds. what is wrong with it and how can i fix it?

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

  • Optical drive will not eject

My Satellite A205-S5814 optical drive will not eject when I press the eject button.
Before this problem started, the drive would eject, but sometimes a blank screen would immediately appear after the tray ejected and then the computer would restart itself and give me the option of restarting in safe mode.
Please let me know what may be wrong.
    Thanks.

Your machine is booting into a Windows partition.
Apple does not support Windows. They do provide "Boot camp" which allows a knowledgeable person to install XP in a drive partition on a Mac.
However "boot camp" still in "beta" status and some of the keyboard mapping is not the same as a Windows PC, because it's a Mac, not a PC.
Mac's come with Mac OS X standard, not Windows. The copy of Windows you got on the machine was likely put there for demonstration purposes, not for sale. If you know how to hack Windows, I'm sure you could bypass the admin password, that's a "store trick" to sell a product with a illegal copy of Windows.
All Mac's will open the c.d. tray if you reboot holding the mouse button down with a wired keyboard.
You can also reboot again holding "option key" to select a drive partition to boot from, there should be a Mac OS X and a Windows partition, however it's possible the Mac OS X partition was erased.
You can stick the Mac OS X installer disk in the c.d. tray, close it and reboot holding "c". It will boot off the disk. There you can select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and Erase w/Zero the internal hard drive. When finished Quit and install Mac OS X Tiger. Your "store copy" of Windows will be gone of course.
If your unfamiliar with Mac's, Mac OS X, "Boot Camp" with Windows, I suggest you have someone help you. Your in very deep too early in your learning curve.
You'll really need to learn Mac OS X first, then you can play around with "Boot-Camp" and a legal copy of XP in a drive partition.
With Mac OS X your machine will be very safe from internet threats, but when your in "Boot Camp" under XP, your just like any Windows PC, completely vulnerable.

  • My optical drive will not recognize cd's....but it will play dvd's.  When i insert an audio cd it spins but eventually spits it out.

My CD/DVD drive will only play DVD's.  When I insert an audio cd it just spins then ejected.  I checked my settings and it should open with Itunes.  I read something about messing with the language but that didn't seem to work.  HELP!!!

Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • SuperDrive will not burn dvds

I can burn CDs,play CDs and watch DVDs. I can not burn DVDs. I have iLife but I cannot run iDVD because it is not compatible with of my version of OS. Why I don't know. Why should I have to buy every upgrade that come out? I can live with that, sort of, but why can't I burn a data DVD? I looked for a new driver but there does not seem to be one for Leopard. will I have to buy iLife 09 to bun a DVD?

  • Tecra 8200: drive will not read DVD-R or DVD+RW

    I have a Tecra 8200 running on Win98.
It has an SD-R2002 Rev A combo drive with firmware 1324.
It reads commercial DVDs OK, but will not read DVD-R or DVD+RW (booktype set to DVD-ROM) disks (I don't have any other types to try).
Is this correct or is the drive faulty?
If it is broken I would like to replace it with a DVD writer. Is there a writer that will fit this laptop?

The drive is not faulty. It is just DVD-CDRW drive, as Gipsy said.
I didnt find any info about compatible DVD burner for this unit. Problem is that this unit has no firewire or USB 2.0 ports and you can not even use external one. Maybe if you use USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.
The unit is about 5 or even 6 years old and you maybe expect too much. ;)
