N500 with Vista blue screen/crash

Hi there, I bought a N500 (5ZG) with Vista Home Basic three months ago, and generally I'm happy. Unfortunately, every now and then, the system crashes with the blue screen coming up. There's no specific reason that I could identify, meaning it happens independent of what software/application I run
I've upgraded to Vista service pack 2 hoping it would sort it out; it didn't. I also have the latest BIOS update from Lenovo. Has anyone any idea what's going on here? Thanks.

Thanks, Harm. It will help in giving the shop some kind of direction because they miss things even though it is their actual job to know these things.
I've felt that it was running hot, they had mentioned re-appling thermal paste to the processor a couple days ago but didn't stress it.
There are 2 different blue screen issues and one is solved:
1. The original irreparable crash which prompted me getting a new HD.
2. The blue screen crash... on the NEW harddrive.... whenever I tried to open Premiere.(which apparently was solved when they re-installed
Windows a 2nd time on my brand new HD because my computer no longer Blue screen crashes when Premiere loads.
Addressing the heat issue could prevent future BSOD crashes and may have prevented the original crash.
Also, does BSOD refer to the irreparable crashes which render your HD useless or ANY crash where a blue screen appears?   I have been using BSOD to refer to a complete/total/final HD crash.
I don't smoke but these series of mishaps may get me started.

    Hey Ishland,
You are not alone. I'm getting the same thing I'm running Vista. I'm reading that Windows 8, 8.1 preview, Vista and XP.
I'm thinking this has to be a Apple update to iTunes 11.0.4.4 fix.
    Cheers,

    Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Preferred sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers, download managers, etc.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
After doing that, to learn how to share the link to the file if you are unaware, please visit the following link -
Share files and folders and change permissions and view 'Get a link'.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUpUtilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use. With this said, if you've run such software, you will need to allow the system to crash once again to generate a crash dump.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
    drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
    log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.

  • Blue Screen Crash with CS3

Seems to me I've been through this in the past but don't recall the solution.
After a harddrive failure on my laptop I installed CS3 on my newly installed harddrive.
I then tried to open Premiere, it crashed with a Windows blue screen error message.
Then, I installed the latest CS3 patch and opened Premiere. While the files
were being cached(or whatever it's called) Premiere crashed again, same blue screen.
The blue screen went by pretty quickly, something about must shut down to prevent harm to computer.

  • Encore CS4 Missing Frames/Stops Starts  and Blue Screen Crashes During Playback

I'm opening Premiere Pro CS4 with the default presets of HDV Capture, HDV 1080i30 software only mode. I'm capturing from my Canon HV20 using firewire HDV out 1440 x 1080. All goes well during the editing process but when I Dynamic Link and playback in Encore CS4 I observe dropped frames or stop and starts in Encore timeline sequence. At times I may even crash Encore with a Blue Screen. While still running Encore I can go back to Premiere Pro and play the timeline sequence with no issues. I will mention that I have the Matrox RT.X2 installed. But when starting a project I'm doing software only and disabling RT.X2 hardware playback. If I remove all effects in the timeline sequence and then Dynamic link to Encore the playback is normal with no effects. I did exported the Premiere Pro CS4 project using Adobe Media Encoder CS4 with a setting of MPEG 2 Blu-ray 1440 x 1080i 29.97 High Quality. I than import this MPEG2 back into Adobe Encore CS4 and it plays without dropping frames or hang-ups.

    Try to remember this:
Encore "Tries" to playback from premiere pro.  If you have a full set of previews available, it will play those, but you are probably seeing a lot of dropped frames and choppy video if your previews in premiere are set pretty low.  What you can do to combat this--in my experience--is export your video from premiere into a whole file in full format (in a non-lossy format with full frames, and in it's proxy equivalent;  I use Prores LT for many projects, and export that as a final output from premiere), then have that encode in an h.264 format (which will maximize smooth motion and quality playback).  Now... ...In your encore project, you should be outside of your original formats and in the intermediary that encore will recognize, so you should have it "Locate transcoded file".  Once you have done so, it will playback that movie in the preview.  I've done it.  With CS6 and 4gb ram with a vidcard at 256mb and a core2duo 2.16ghz, it plays fine.  With CS4 the encoding takes a while, and if you go to dvd, even longer for compression to work properly.  I use Compressor to output AVCHD .264 stream and an AC3 file.  When I locate the transcode for BD, I locate the .264 file first, then I get asked for the AC3 file.  This allows me to import them both, and have Encore encode them into the transport stream without transcoding.  I use Distributed processing to get the job done quickly, as I have minimal access to several computers and have connected them by that method for a Render Farming setup.  It works well.  With a hardware based device playing back your files, you won't see the same performance in Encore.  It has to make two hops already to get to your video, and adding a third (goes from encore to Premiere, then to codec, then plays normally;  third step is to external hardware, which eats up processing like crazy when it has to come all the way back to an encoding output to screen through encore, adding more steps for the system along the way) really can slow down the performance in Encore.  IF you take the Steps out by encoding a finished playback stream, Encore will handle it quickly with it's own processing.  It really does work well.  If you don't like it, make your changes in Premiere, then re-encode with your hardware and make an h.264 file for encore again.  You can use AME, but you'll always get standard Blu-ray (old file-stream format; lesser res and quality).  You can use Compressor to make AVCHD which allows for 264 output that is PSF or progressive that is interpreted as simultaneous fields (fake interlace), or even solid progressive formatting for AVCHD compatible players, and you can render-farm it to speed up the encoding process.

  • Every time I have tried to install firefox 6.0, it has blue screen crashed my system - can you help?

I am using an old computer but it has dual processors and 4 gb of ram. I am using Windows XP home edition, sp2 atm. I have a Galaxy 200 vid card, sound-blaster X-Fi, Gigabyte mother board. Atm, all I have is IE 6.
After the blue screen crash, I had trouble rebooting my computer. When I was able to reboot, the firefox 6.0 would not run and I could not uninstall it. I did a restore system and was finally able to uninstall it - at the time I still had the 5.0 installer on my desktop so I installed it- I don't have it now.
I tried the firefox 6.0 before I had gotten all the updates for sp3- as I have had trouble getting the last windows updates to install.
I am not a techie - what I have done is trial and error to try to get my software to work. I would either like to get a working version of firefox 6.0 or a safe download of firefox 4.0 as that worked and I had no problems with it.
    Can you assist?

Can you attach a screenshot or link to the instructions you are following?
You are on the 3.6 release and Firefox 7.0.1 is out. You can download and install the latest release from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ if you would like to update now. The 3.6 version will be maintained for a while longer, but you should update when you can.

  • CS 4 installation causes blue screen crash when printing

I installed CS 4 successfully and used it for months with no difficulty at work.  This weekend, I brought my computer home to do some work, and everytime I send something to my printer/scanner (a Canon MP780), my computer (IBM ThinkPad laptop running on Windows XP) crashes with a blue screen error.  When I try to use the scanner, I get the same problem.  I have reinstalled printer driver and USB port drivers, with no change to the problem.  I finally uninstalled CS 4, and was able to print and scan normally.  When I re-installed the Adobe software, the crashing began again.  The crashing does not happen when I am using the Adobe software, only when I try to print or scan any document from any software - then it happens consistently.  When the Adobe software is off, no problems.  Anyone have advice?

  • Cisco VPN Client causes blue screen crash on WindowsXP Pro (Satellite M30)

    Hi there,
I've got a Satellite Pro M30 running Windows XP Professional.
After starting a vpn Tunnel via a Cisco VPN Client (Version 4.6 and 4.7) the system crashes with a blue screen.
I can see that the key exchange is successful, but immediatly after the vpn connection gets established Windows XP crashes with a blue screen.
Has anyone an idea, how to solve this problem?
Maybe by device driver update? And if so, which driver should be updated?
    Kind regards,
    Thorsten

    Hi R2D2 (and anyone else)!
1st of all (concerning your link) - I'm not using the wireless adapter.
I am connectet via 100Mbit via network-cable to my hub (all RJ45 TP Cat.5)
I found several other Notebook users by google'ing who have the same problem different vpn-clients but most of them with a centrino processor inside the notebook.
Almost all of them solved the problem by installing new drivers. But I can't use driver-patches from other Notebook to fix my Toshiba Drivers.
What could help is information about which driver is responsible for the crash by vpn clients on centrino notebooks. Maybe there is an Intel driver for it, but when I do not know which one causes the problem it's like seeking a needle in a haystack... :(
Disabling ALL other network devices (wireless, 1394-network adapter, modem, etc.) did not solve the problem.
I used the Cisco VPN clients several times on my old Compaq Notebook without any problems, but here it just doesn't work.
An idea which driver should be updated is kindly welcome!
    Thank you, Thorsten

  • Access to istore causes blue screen crash

I am running an ipod and itouch - PC is Windows XP.
With the newest version of itunes, everything works fine between itunes on the PC and the devices, EXCEPT trying to access the store for music or podcasts. I see the headings of the store displayed, then I get a blue screen crash. This happens with the devices attached, or not.

The first thing to do is get the error codes from the crash.
Here is an older post from b noir that explains how to find the error codes.

  • Clicking on firefox icon causes blue screen crash

This began Friday, Feb. 25, about mid day. The only changes to the system that morning were an update to an Adobe plugin, either Flash player or Shockwave, I'm not sure, and an update to the Scottrade Elite desktop trading app. Both of those changes occurred about 0900. The problems began about 1130 when the system, Windows 7 Home Premium had a blue screen crash. From that time on, I have uninstalled each of the apps mentioned. I cannot open Firefox to work on the plugins becuase every time I click on the icon I get a blue screen crash with the words "Page fault in non paged area" at the top. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the Firefox app with no apparent beneficial effect. The Scottrade trading app has been reinstalled and works well, causing no further probs.

    Hello mrcart,
i think it is unlikely that firefox itself is causing an operating system crash, i had some time back an similar issue where a system of a friend of mine was crashing while using IE - thats the only app he used ... the system in his case had faulty ram, and i suspect you are facing some sort of hardware problem or faulty device driver.
Please read this (also lists steps what you can do):
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc957625.aspx
(personally) I would suggest you start by checking your ram, you can do this in two ways:
Search in your Windows 7 Start Menu for "ram", you should find something like "Diagnose your computer´s memory problems"
... Or, you use the memtest86+ tool from here (e.g. download the iso, burn it and boot from the cd):
    http://www.memtest.org/
Check your eventlog for errors (e.g. disk errors, timeouts, etc).
If you cannot track the problem down (i would suspect a hardware problem or faulty device driver ... e.g. it could be your video card driver doing something wrong) you should seek help at your computer manufacturer, an experienced friend, or using some forum.
    kind regards,
    John Kirk.

    Joey, welcome to the forum.
Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome?  Sometimes a glitch will occur during the original install.  This can cause the problem that you are experiencing.
Also, you may want to try Internet Explorer or Firefox to see if you receive the same error message.  This will tell you if it is a problem with Chrome or a system problem.

  • Total Blue Screen Crash

Just had a really nasty crash, almost like a kernel panic except that there was no panic message.
Had been running without a restart since installing 10.5.6. Woke up the computer from sleep and plugged in my iPhone 3g (running 2.2). It had apparently synched and was simply charging at the time of the crash (but see below).
Several other applications had been running since the day before, including Entourage, Excel, and Word (all 2004, last updated a few months ago; there is a new 11.5.0 update I have not installed). Had checked mail a few minutes before with Entourage and it was hidden. Word was visible on my external monitor (which has the menu bar), and I was actively using Excel on the Macbook screen, editing a formula in a newly-added column. A few keystrokes back Excel had lost keyboard focus (as happens every five minutes or so, apparently a known problem for Rosetta) but as usual clicking on the desktop and then in Excel brought it back.
Between two keystrokes, total crash. Both screens went pale blue with no messages of any kind, and a few seconds later I found myself at the startup login screen with the generic space background. Login completion seemed much faster than after a full restart, so probably some things were either still running or in a state that let them be used without reloading. But all applications were gone; I checked with Activity Monitor and nothing was running except system tasks and my login startup items. When I restarted Excel it loaded a recovery file that was nearly current; I lost only a few minutes of work.
The console log makes it look as if the trigger may have been a failed iPhone synch operation of some kind. Just after it was logged (with a crash report sent automatically) there are a whole series of termination messages (WindowServer event port death, and a whole series of Exited: Terminated events for various applications.)
Is this a known crash? If not, what's the best way to report it? It could be helpful to the OS team to have my logs. It may be relevant that Paragon NTFS was running (though not in active use), and posted some error messages to the console log during the crash and restart.

This is an old thread, but I'm replying in case anyone can shed more light on the subject -- or if my experience helps.
I've had the same blue screen crash a couple of times with my new MacBook Pro (which replaced a MacBook Pro with an apparent hardware problem about a week ago). Though I had problems with the first machine, I never had the blue screen issue with it (and it had a virtually sound-free trackpad click, which is sadly not the case on the replacement machine). But those are stories for another day.
Anyway, I also have Excel 2004 installed on my machine (I also have Excel 2008 installed). But neither app was open during the last blue screen crash, a few moments ago. I only had a few applications open at the time: Mail, Microsoft Entourage 2008, Firefox, TextEdit and possibly Microsoft Word 2004.
I was composing an email in Entourage when the computer screen simply became blue. A few seconds later I was returned to my desktop. All of my applications had closed, and when I reopened Entourage, I found a recovered version of the email I'd been composing, with just a sentence of recent typing unsaved.
This has happened at least one other time on this machine -- again, just a blue screen that functioned like a very quick restart, with no accompanying kernel panic or error message. This machine also was giving me kernel panics the first few days I was working with it, but something -- a Firefox reinstall, a few trashed prefs and library files -- seems to have resolved that.

  • Blue screen crash reinstalling quicktime on notebook

Can anyone help? for a month and a half I have been trying to reinstall quicktime and itunes on my toshiba window xp laptop. Everytime I get a blue screen crash at the end of the quicktime install around where it says something like initializing quicktime types. When I submit this error to microsoft the report says it is due to Antivirus software, I am running Window onecare live. I have tried every fix I can find out there including removing onecare and I still get the crash. I really do not care to rebuild the system. Please help, I am getting tired of the music on my ipod! Thx

I have been having this "problem" since running a QuickTime update in January 2007. I've spent countless hours de-installing anti-virus software, minimizing my hardware footprint (removing printers, scanners, etc.), detoxing my system with Microsoft Uninstallers, Registry Cleaners, and running Windows XP in a minimized manner.
On Thursday April 10, 2008 I spent four hours on the telephone with a competent, qualified Microsoft XP engineer (plus an XP supervisor in the background). Microsoft was very diligent and completely hospitable working with me to resolve this issue. In the end, Microsoft recommended I talk with Apple directly.
On Friday April 11, 2008 I spent one hour with an Apple engineer. Once again, the customer service was excellent, but the results are the same. Microsoft and Apple engineers are "Befuddled". We've tried eliminating all Apple software from my PC via files and the registry, rebooting, and then attempting a fresh install. The PC reboots when "Initializing Quicktime Types" is displayed towards the end of the installation process.
We've even set up a new user and attempted to install Quicktime on a USER with no associated "software overhead". No success.
I've tried the Quicktime Only install, and Quicktime with Itunes installation. Same results. I am taking my PC to Baybrook Mall (Friendswood, Texas) on April 20 for the MAC Genius Bar people to review this problem on my PC. My expectations are very low... since I'm usually much more PC and XP competent than most people. My background occupation is Information Technology from 1975 to date. I evened owned and operated computer stores with "New Build" and "Repair" shops. I'm very seasoned working on PC's and associated software, and this is the first problem where I join the "Befuddled".
If anyone has a solution for this problem, please contact me and make a posting for everyone else.
    Thanx.
