N660TI 2GB PE/OC - increased temp after cpu upgrade

so its like this, i recently upgraded my cpu from an old 3-core Athlon II to an i5-4690k, and i find that my gpu is running much warmer than it has as long as ive owned it, both in terms of peak temp and average load temp. ive had to adjust the fan profile to keep it cool, which of course makes much more noise. ive also noticed that the outboard fan (closest to the bracket&video out connectors, doesnt even spin unless the fan is set to 86%, which undoubtedly conttributes to the heat problem.
i DID take a can of compressed air to the heat sink and fans while i had my system apart installing the new cpu, but it still has a bit of dust on the underside of the fans that i cant get too, unless i take off the entire heatsink, which im not about to do. case has dustfilters on all the major intakes as well, so its not like suddenly it grew dust bunnies in the past 3 days
settings and such here: hxxp://imgur.com/a/ykjm8 (replace hxxp with http, duh)
i bought this 660ti the day they came out, so its about 2.5 years old or so. generally speaking, load temp was mid-50s C, or low 60s if its really hot. the absolute peak ive seen in all that time was 76, which is what the scale on the afterburner graph is set at. after installing the i5, load temps (guildwars 2 for sake of exmaple) are are mid-60s, and ive seen a peak of 78.
specific model again is teh msi N660TI power edition/over clock 2gb, (which i guess is one of those that had a voltage regulator bypass, according to tomshardware), gpu bios is stock, latest nvidia drivers 347.52 WHQL, msi afterburner 4.1.0, no overvolting, stock clocks (athlon couldnt keep up with overclocking anyway and it runs too warm to overclock now) graphs are shown under load with guildwars 2, high quality settings at 1920x1080 windowed, vsync@60fps, in characters home instance. the fan profile shown is after i bumped it up, high mark was around 70%/70c at the time.
droping the power level in afterburner to 57% helps the temp a bit, as does underclocking it as far as it'll go. i also have a 12cm fan i could install in my case's side panel, right next to the gpu, to draw air out (cause thats where the gpu exhausts at), i also have another 12cm fan installed at the bottom of the case blowing up towards the gpu roughly in line with the inboard gpu fan.
anything i can do about that one fan? i dont really want to have to run at 90% fan speed all the time to keep it cool (especially with summer comming up, no A/C here, gonna get hot as balls) or is it time to upgrade?

Hi,
I might be wrong here, as I don't know much about AMD CPUs, however I think that your old 3 core Athlon was bottlenecking the GPU which did not let it use its full power.  Now with your i5 Haswell Refresh, it uses its full potential which cause slightly higher temps.
You could reapply thermal paste on the graphics card (done at your own risk) if you don't have warranty on it any longer. If you do, then contact MSI in your country and ask if you can do it (obviously if you damage something then warranty is void)

  • No output to HDMI (but ok to VGA...) after CPU upgrade

    Hi there,
I have a very strange problem... hope you can help!
I wanted to upgrade my Mac Mini to use it as an HTPC, so I passed from 1.83Ghz CoreDuo/512Mb to 2.00Ghz Core2Duo/2Gb.
The CPU and RAM upgrade process went OK, so I tried to connect the Mini to my HDTV (TOSHIBA 37A3030D) via a DVI->HDMI cable, but the screen was blank.
I thought I had somehow damaged the digital video out of the Mini during the upgrade, so I tried to plug a 17" monitor with a VGA-VGA cable and a DVI-VGA adapter: no problem there.
Then I thought about a cable issue, but the very same cable works perfectly when I try it with my MacBook Pro, and in the same TV.
So I played a little with SwitchResX and finally resolved: after few tries and some reboots everything worked.
But then I noticed that CPU temperature was a little too high, so I decided to re-open my Mini and put a better thermal compound.
All went well, or so it seemed: in fact since this last intervention the CPU temperature went ok but I couldn't get HDMI output from my Mini any more!!
Output to VGA still works, tried with the monitor I mentioned before and with my TV's VGA input ... too bad I can't reach 1080i via VGA!.
    I tried almost everything:
    - Playing around with SwitchResX, with no luck this time...
    - Resetting PRAM and NVRAM with various methods (the little button on the motherboard, CMD-OPT-P-RE during the boot, etc... )
    - Resetting SMC
    - Resetting firmware (keeping the power button pressed when turning on the machine 'till it beeps)
    - Reinstalling Leopard
    ...no results.
The weird thing is that if I VNC to the mini I notice that the TV is correctly recognized (screenshot: http://www.matteo.ge.it/vnc_mini.jpg), and EDID data seems ok (link: http://www.matteo.ge.it/TOSHIBA-TV_macmini.txt)
Do you guys have any idea?
Thank you so much, I'm getting desperate

I tried to connect the mini to the TV just after the upgrade. After some tweaking with SwitchResX it worked. The problems began when i decided to re-open the mini to put some better termal compound over the CPU.
I agree with you, I have probably screwed up something during this operation, but I really can't say what!!! I tried both TechToolPro and the hardware tests from Tiger DVD, and all of the tests were ok...
I phoned to the Apple tech support here in italy, but they proposed me to change the entire logic board, which would cost me almost the price of a brand new machine!!
The ultimate test I want to do is to hook up my Mini to a DVI monitor with a DVI-D cable.
If it doesn't work, It is almost certain that I have damaged digital video out (even if I would like to know how I could did that!!)

  • No post after CPU upgrade?

    Hi
I upgraded my processor to a XP1700+ In an Msi K7T266 Pro2 Mb It had the older Athlon 1 Gig CPU. After I installed it all I would get is 3 lights on the D bracket and no monitor or post. I have already updated the BIOS before the CPU upgrade. I have an Antec 430 true power PSU, cleared CMOS, doublechecked Heatsink and all connections still wont post (not even a beep code) Installed old CPU and Viola it booted fine has anybody ran into this? Another post said something about a modification needed on this board to support the newer 0.13 micron CPU,s but the post never reached a conclusion if so is there a way around this?
Thank you in advance for your help.............

    Go bare bones.
    1) Disconnect everything.  IDE cables, FDD cable, take out all PCI cards, only leave videcard  :P .
    2) Clear CMOS (you may have to remove battery or switch PC on/off without plugged in to discharge capacitors).
PC should post now.  If it doesn't post I wonder if CMOS is really cleared.  Assuming CPU XP 1600 is okay (have you checked?) it means that BIOS doesn't recognise CPU.  Did you flash with correct version?

  • Satellite M40x will not boot up after CPU upgrade test

I have an M40x Laptop. I took the CPU out of it to replace it with another to test the computer booted up fine so I shut down and took it out and put it's original CPU back in, and it would not boot. Now it will not boot up at all with either of the CPU's all. When I turn on the power all I get is a white screen for a few seconds and the laptop shuts itself back down. Both the CPU's are good because I have since tested them in other computers to make sure that was not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this??

    Im not surprised.
As far as I know Toshiba does not support any CPU upgrades and it's not advisable to do something like that.
Its a fact that the CPU replacement on the notebooks is not easy and mostly not recommended.
The processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturization and heat dissipation.
Did you assign the new heat paste? Its necessary and important if you want to connect the CPU again.
So possibly this is a reason for the no booting.
I think more details you will get from the service guys in your country

  • Increased temp after moving to 8GB

MacBook Pro 13", had 4GB from factory and recently upgraded to 8GB. I find the temperature of the case to be much higher than previously. Is this normal? Or do different manufacturers of RAM produce different operating temperatures? (The ram is 3rd party but seems to be fine in other ways)
My cpu temp is around 80deg and the bottom of the case ranges from 32 to 39deg C. The fan isn't on in these cases either (i'm testing the temp with temperature monitor)
    would appreciate any comments
    thanks
    pual

Hi, Paul. If your MBP's single fan isn't running, there's a hardware problem. The fan's default (idle) speed is 2000RPM; it should run at least that fast at all times. If it doesn't, take the machine in for service under your one-year warranty.

  • Wierd issues after cpu upgrade

    Hi Guys,
I have an MSI K9N6SGM-V mother board it had an
    CPU: amd athlonx2 3600+
RAM: 2 sticks 1GB and 2GB different brands
    GFX: Nvidia gt520
    windows vista basic
I'm at work so cant check the rest but if you something specific let me know and ill find out.
OK so i updated my CPU to amd athlonx2 5000+ and this has caused a whole heap of problems.
the first thing which happend is that it would only show up in task manager as i have 1gb of ram this made me think that one of my sticks had died.
so i messed around changing the ram and took out the 2gb stick but it still wouldn't work so then it appeared that it was a slot had died.
so i moved to 2gb to the working slot and still only recognised 1gb in taskmanager.
so i thought it may be CPU so i took it out and managed to get thermal paste on some of the pins after cleaning it off i replaced CPU and it wouldn't boot.
after taking the mains out and the cmos battery i got it running again but still only 1gb of ram and now it will only boot if i first take the cmos and mains power out.
my bios was the newest one available so i took the forum tool which by the way was fantastic and loaded an older bios so i could try the newer one again.
after doing this twice flash and reflash still only boots if cmos and mains taken out.
i replaced my old CPU and now it works fine again. it boots without removing cmos and shows 3gb of ram in task manager.
both CPU say they are rated as 65w so i cant really see it being a psu fault as they the same wattage i guess the old CPU could draw alot less but i dont know.
I'm not sure i think i have a 300-350w psu could it really be a psu issue or does it sound like something else?
thanks you for looking and i hope my post isn't to annoying to read I'm happy to help you help me any way i can
    thanks again in advance

do you think it could be compatibility issues with my original 1.9ghz cpu they have worked fine never had a problem and once i put this cpu back in i still dont have a problem.
AMD 3600+ and 5000+ have different core architectures. Also mixing DDR2 memories with different sizes and chips can be painful to get it working but as you said it worked with the 3600+ it might need only some tweaking with the timings or voltage. Also if you had the opportunity to test with a better Power supply just to make sure that's not the issue here you might want to try.
Quote from: Thestien on 01-August-12, 17:34:55
i have a matched pair of 512mb sticks at home i could try later to rule this out but im scared of bending pins and getting more paste on the new 2.6ghz cpu lol.
Why taking out the CPU, do you have big CPU Cooler?
Quote from: Thestien on 01-August-12, 17:34:55
could compatibility issues cause me to have to remove cmos to boot? im sorry my knowledge isnt very good but im learning
Yes, for numerous reasons Bios settings might be corrupted or either not detecting the hardware changes during boot, one of 1st things to do when the system doesn't boot properly.

  • Stability problem after CPU upgrade

    I just replaced a 2.93GHz celeron D with a 3.0GHz P4 (SL8JZ, prescott core, I believe stepping is G1), on a PM8M-V MOBO. Has 2Gb of Ultra memory. OS is win XP prof, sp1, sp2.
System boots to windows the shuts down with a blue screen, which is in and out to fast to read . What I have done so far is.
    1. Mark the drive as dirty and rebooted. Chkdsk ran ok.
    2. Boot to safe mode check device manager and system events in the MSC console nothing interesting there and device manager reports all is well with the new cpu.
    3. Still in safe mode ran memtest, which failed after only 1.4% and continued to fail.
    4. Cleared CMOS, posted and reset BIOS to optimized defaults.
    5. System again booted, but again became unstable and shut down.
    6. Flashed new bios w7104vms.220 (latest verion @ 2007). Windows behaved similarly after startup.
Not sure what to do next. I once had to up the dram voltage on a newer system, when overclocking a pentium D using PQI memory, before it would pass a memtest audit, but if I remember that system did not fail to a blue screen and if it did i managed to supress the memory. No pun intended.
I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. At this point I am inclined to focus on hardware things like re-seating the memory, although I never removed it during the operation and the system had been stable for some time before this.

A nice list of specs would be good. Use my sig as an example.
Without much more system info, I am going to guess the memory is not compatible with the board. But i am not sure because I do not know the type of memory. Try using 1 stick of memory or upping the memory voltage 1 click at a time in the bios and see if that helps. Be carefull.

  • Blank screen after CPU upgrade for CQ60-119 series

    Hi all.
    The model:
I recently decide to upgrade my Compaq Presario CQ60-119TU purchased in 2008.
    The upgrades:
My son will use it to play some games on it. Yes I know - it only has an integrated 4500M graphics chip - but this should be fine for Spore.
Apart from changing from 2 to 4Gb of Ram I will swap out the 250Gb to a 640Gb hard drive. The CPU is also being swapped out.
Existing CPU: Intel Celeron T1600 (1M Cache, 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)
Replacement CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
The laptop manual states this CPU as the best spec'ed replacement CPU I can put in the laptop.
Prior to this I upgraded to the lated bios which is F.65. All was working well with the T1600 at this time.
    Problem:
After replacing the CPU and pressing the power button the laptop boots up briefly for a couple of seconds and then powers off for a couple of seconds. It reboots and stays on (CPU fan is running) but there is nothing on the screen at any time.
If I replace the old CPU and the machine boots up with the screen displaying text  so video  appears not to be the issue (well ...not broken at least)
Any suggestions on how to get this CPU to work or is the CPU defective? Thanks in advance.

Have a look here and you'll see that having the wrong mobo northbridge chipset (not compatible with the FSB of the processor) will cause the T9600 not to work. If you have the GL40 chipset forget trying to get this processor to work with your existing motherboard. If you have the GM45 chipset then your issue is probably something else.
Don't know what your chipset is? Download the free utiliy CPU-Z and run it.
FYI - The same model motherboard with the GM45 chipset is a 485219-001.

  • Tecra A11-11N does not boot after CPU upgrade

    Hi,
I would like to do a processor upgrade for my Tecra A11 11N from the i5-430M to a probably much faster i5.I thought the i5-580M would do, but the laptop did not boot when i installed this processor.
I reverted back to the 430M, did some research on the internet and found out that the 580M has a very high FSB speed and that is what probably made it not to work/incompatible with my machine.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/43537/
    http://ark.intel.com/products/49653
    http://ark.intel.com/products/49652
    and also at http://ark.intel.com/
Now i went back to the computer shop, returned the 580M and got an i5-560M as i compared it's specs and saw it would be compatible as it has the same FSB speed with the 430M.
I then later on in the day tried to install this cpu as an upgrade BUT alas!
    It STILL WON'T BOOT ALSO.
I was left dumfounded.Processors in the same familly line are supposed to be compatible with one another provided:Lithography, FSB and socket type are similar.
Or what am i missing here?
I have done processor upgrades in many instances for both desktops and laptops and this is the first one that has left me with no words to say!
    please offer some help/advice.
    Simon
    +Message was edited+

I solved this processor upgrade problem on my own.
I did some little research on what limits processor upgradability on computers and i
found out that BIOS was one of the factors that play a key part.
    So,i went on a mission
to see if i could upgrade my BIOS and whether it would solve my problem.
I found this link to be very informative:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=66624
I then downloaded the latest BIOS version for my laptop from this link:
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_bios.jsp
The following link gave me proof that the BIOS update would not bring any problems to my
machine and that there is already someone who had done it and not encountered any problems.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=62459
Just to make sure that you are on the safe side, before carrying out the procedure to update
your BIOS,make sure you have a fully charged battery in addition to the AC plugged in.A power
outtage during this procedure would instantly kill your machine.
The BIOS installation took less than 3 mins.I copied the executable on the desktop and run it
    from there.
On rebooting, the new BIOS was installed. The new BIOS version was 3.40 dated on 05/18/2012 while
the older one was version 2.0 dated on 04/03/2010.
    From Intel's website,the i5-430M was released on Q1 2010 while the i5-560M and i5-580M were
    released on Q3 2010.
It is pretty obvious that by the time BIOS version 2.0 was release, these two newer processors
had not been released and that explains why they were not being recognized when i installed them.
I finally swapped the 430M with the 560M,assembled back the machine and powered it.
Voil!,the machine booted to it's new life.Everything is as was before!
So far i have not seen any problems even to do with overheating or the cooling fan spinning any
faster that before. It is all the same as before. There is considerable performance gain with the
uprade.I am a software developer and my various development enviroments including compilers,
debuggers, database and deployment servers have all been running way way faster than they were!
I believe the 580M can also work but unfortunately i had returned it back to the shop.
There is no reason for buying new machines when we can upgrade the ones we have. What will
happen to the older ones? This means more electronic waste and so does new machines.Let us try
to make better use of the ones we have a in turn,SAVE OUR ONLY PLANET EARTH FROM GLOBAL WARMING!

  • R12.1.3 - Patch Wizard no longer working after CPU upgrade

    R12.1.3 on RH Linux x86_64.
Just upgraded my R12.1.3 environment to get to the Jan 2013 CPU level and decided to setup Patch Wizard to see what it shows now.
Previously I had to apply patch "10629956 - Oracle Applications Patch Wizard" to get patch wizard to work with our proxy server.
Initially I just went ahead and applied that patch again to my new config but still couldn't get past this error:
Validation Error. Please check the indicated fields below.
Unable to connect to Metalink. Please enter a valid Metalink userid and password.
Please also check if the Web Proxy Setup information is correct.
Now upon further investigation I see there is an updated patch:
Patch 16357991 for the latest version of Patch Wizard in Oracle E-Business Suite (Release 12.1)
This Patch has been Superseded.    Reason 16357991 included in 11071638
I applied patch 11071638 but I still get the same validation error.
    Pre-req patches R12.AD.B.delta.3 [9239089] and R12.ATG_PF.B.delta.3 [8919491] had been applied.
I still have an older instance running and patch wizard works properly with the same credentials and proxy server settings there.
So how do I troubleshoot this?

Did you bounce the application services and see if this helps?
Please also review (New Required Patches for Patch Wizard, Patch Manager, and Oracle Application Change Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 11i, 12.0, and 12.1 [ID 1267768.1]) and make sure you have all the patches applied.
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • Performance drop after CPU upgrade.

    Hias,
    I got a new CPU.
I expected some performace gain icw the old one.
    However...it is a lot slower
I went from 64.000 to 47.000 in aquamark. Didn't record the values axeactly, but it seems like the CPU part is the one that is lagging behand.
I did need to reinstall and upgrade vid.card drivers and sound card drivers and CPU drivers.
Any1 have a clue the cause of this.

Sorry, should have it a bit more clear:

    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=68314 <-new CPU (Opeteron 148)
    I upgraded bios from 3.3 to 9.2.
I didn't change any other HW, As u can see (follow the links) memory settings are about the same.

  • How do I understand and manage my OTHER ?  my impression is that it increased dramatically after ios5 upgrade.

I have successfully upgraded my iphone 4 to ios5.
However I noticed an apparent large use of my 16g storage, 3.3g as "OTHER".   Whether this occured because of the upgrade or I'm just noticing it for the first time, how can i manage this usage?   what is driving it?   how can i correct this?
i checked my email, and there is no large demands apparent there, and while i have my calendaring set up, i'm not really a user of this.  the only app that might drive load is the audio version of the economist, but i don't see this driving more than a few tens of mb.

Some people I've talked to speculated (but could not confirm) that this "glitch" would be fixed once someone registered their own iCloud account to the old device; this would force the old device to be removed from my iCloud account and transferred to the new user. How long have you been experiencing this "glitch"? I'm guessing if Apple calls it a glitch on iCloud, it won't be fixed any time soon...

  • Imac not responding after mavericks upgrade- black screen

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks 2-3 weeks ago ....if I leave my mac for a while and then try to wake it up with a touch of mouse or keyboard, the screen remains black. The mac is still on as its warm .The only way to recover this is to :
    1. Pull out the plug - gives fresh reboot
    2. Keep the start button pressed for approx 5-10 secs, then press it again and the mac powers up...to the state it was when left ie not a fresh reboot.
This is very annoying , has my wife yelling at me and no longer gives us the instant access from sleep we used to have ...
    Any help appreciated !
    Thanks Jon.
I have a 27" iMac from August 2010 (ie v soon after CPU upgrade) , core i3 processor

OK I appear to have fixed this ...after the Mavericks upgrade the screensaver was reset to loading photo's from "national geographic" which it did after a few mins...i have changed this to another option photo's of earch/space etc..now i can wake the imac from sleep immediately as before ....so now fixed !

I continued researching. When my server gain cpu and memory in Catalina.out, I can to see this output:

    INFO: fragment is Facturacion.jspx:_id4
    Feb 28, 2008 10:25:53 AM oracle.adf.view.faces.webcache.component.UICache getFragmentFromCache
INFO: fragment (Facturacion.jspx:_id4) fetch: cache missIn this example, I belive that user is resuming the Facturacion.jspx page. In my code I have this line:
    It’s corresponding to menu.
    I have looking this documentation:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B25947_01/web_cache002.htm
In this documentation, first access, the cache miss, but the following times the cache could hit. . When my server gain cpu and memory I look that the following times the cache always miss in all pages. Subsequently tomcat no reply and the malicious thread, execute Armageddon trace. This behavior of the cache is strange, right?
I’m sure that I’m making anything that fetch in queryCollection make big loop.
I have redefining getRangeSize and CurrentRow of my CustomViewObject (all viewOjects about my applications extends CustomViewObject and CustomViewObject extends viewObject) and I looked correct rangesize (not -1). I got system.out.println(getFetchedRowCount()) in createRow and obtain 13 or 15. I belive that It’s correct.
Another example of problematic trace is (in this case is in preparemodel):
