N70 Orange Firmware

Hi there, I'm on Orange, and I suffer the same problems as everyone else:
1) Orange Home Screen is devilspawn
2) My ringtone keeps reverting
3) Battery and speed is godawful compared to unbranded firmware
I want to flash the firmware (the salesman at Orange basically said that then if anything ever goes wrong, I should smash it into little pieces and report it as lost before claiming on my insurance) but there's only one place in Belfast I can do it.
So I have a few questions
1) What is the possibility of the firmware flash going wrong?
2) I'm going back home for a week to Cambridge - isn't the national service center somewhere in Huntingdon, near by?
3) What do I need to say to the Nokia Service center to persuade them that it's ok to use the nokia firmware, not the orange firmware?

because of the way in which the nokia service centres flash the phones it means they have to change something in the update process to enable the generic F/W to be loaded. all my local service centre claim its impossible to do. your best off searching the net for an independent store willing to debrand. i know of a couple NSC's that will do it but it means sending them the phone. i would say who they are in here but i don't want nokia finding out who they are and removing there ability to supply the generic firmware.

  • Can I replace my Orange Firmware without hacking?

I want to use the Orange Tsunami homescreen with Nokia icons. However, as I'm with Orange I can't get rid of their horrible orange coloured icons - they are buried in the firmware. Is there a way to replace the 'Orange' firmware with 'Nokia' firmware to get round this problem?
This might be a silly question but I'm still quite new to this technical stuff. But I need to do something to make using my X6 slightly enjoyable.

Any methods that would allow you to do that would also void the warranty.
Unfortunately discussion of warranty voiding issues is not allowed on this forum.
You may want to ask your question again on an unofficial forum, such as the one at www.dailymobile.se

  • N70 - Upgrading Firmware - Pros & Cons?

    Hi All,
I've been using an N70 for a couple of months now, and it's been suggested I have the firmware updated, but I've seen a couple of posts in here and heard from other people about the possibility that my network (o2) won't support the updated version... This seems really confusing as the firmware's only on the handset and shouldn't be anything to do with the network...
Could anyone let me know if there's anything I may need to worry about?
    Thanks,
    Rick

If you upgrade to the latest O2 version of firmware then O2 and Nokia will still provide you with full support for your handset. So no need to worry there. Any of your warranties will remain unaffected.
The discussions you have been reading relate to when you upgrade a branded handset with Nokia generic firmware in order to de-brand the handset. Most discussions centre around the fact that the majority of owners who are on the Orange network that post here are desperate to rid themselves of Orange's additions to the standard user interface. Their only two options are to return the handset to Orange and buy a SIM free version, or take their existing hanset for a firmware upgrade to generic Nokia firmware. In the latter of the scenarios, they will invalidate any warranties that they may have with their network provider but rather surprisingly they would also void any warranty from Nokia too.
In summary, in your case if you upgrade to the latest O2 firmware, then you would have no problems so you can rest easy

  • Problems with Orange firmware when using 6301 on O...

I have bought and unlocked an Orange-branded Nokia 6301 handset, and it seems that the Wi-fi and Email functions are tied to the Orange configuration settings (in Settings> Configuration). You can add O2 configuration settings, but they only seem to be applied to MMM and Web browsing, not the other functions, which remain 'tied to' the Orange config. settings, which of course I cannot use as I am on O2.
This in effect makes the phone pretty useless, I have tried updating the firmware (with same version as was on latest), but the Firmware Updater in the PC Suite seems to be wise to the branding - it updates with the same network firmware that the phone was on before (not the SIM card one).
I have also read elsewhere that the Wifi only works on Orange if the phone is Orange-branded, so I suspect I might have a problem here unless I can overwrite the firmware with a non-Orange/O2 version - can anyone advise how to do this, or how else to solve the above problem? Even getting the email working would be great...

The only legitimate way to remove operator branding is:
    1) Get the phone SIM unlocked (already done apparently)
    2) Get written permission from the operator to remove the branded firmware (this is the hard bit!)
    3) Take phone, proof of ownership and written permission to your nearest Nokia Care Point, who will make the necessary changes to the phone, install generic firmware onto it and print out a new battery compartment label for it.
    Good luck with step 2...

  • N70 Russian firmware

    Hi,
I was wondering why there isn't any new firmware for my phone (Russian, N70, product code 0533691)? The latest software is v.5.0705.3.0.1. While for other areas (Italian for example, PC 0547341), the latest version is 5.0737.3.0.1. Could someone from Nokia staff tell me, what is prospective date of release? Thanks in advance.

You won´t be getting answers from Nokia staff here, this is a user2user help board.
But you could contact Nokia via:
    www.europe.nokia.com/contactus
There you´ll find a detailed selection of your country.
By clicking the "Kudos!" or the "Solution?" button on the right you can say "Thank You" and you´ll show the author and others that the post is useful.

  • N70 New Firmware

    Hello,
I have heard that NOKIA has released a newer firmware version than 5.0638.3.0.1 a few days before. Is it real?

i'm not sure yet, but from what i was told (a friend managed to update) the Music Player is imporved, now it displays a Now Playing header, the camera quality, etc.
My product code is 0529297, and i couldn't update via NSU.

  • N70 reinstall firmware

how can i reinstall the firmware on a n70 . I don`t want to restore factory settings or anithing else. i just want to reinstall the firmware. thanx

Nokia Software Updater doesn't help in reinstalling firmware - it only checks whether firmware is of older version and then updates. If, "unfortunately", you have got the updated firmware on your phone then it is of no use i.e. you can't reinstall firmware through NSU.

  • N70 original firmware

i have recently upgraded to latest firmware but is there anyway i can go back to the original firmware.

It might be an issue of the new firmware. But the best thing which you can do is to change ur phone, its too old and i think nokia is never gonna fix it. Buy an N96 or some other latest phone.

  • What's new in this N70's Firmware ???

    I want to update my Firmware to V.50638.3.0.1 - 18-09-06 - RM-84, but I don't know what's new in this Firmware ?
In old Firmware, I saw the countdown time to turn off light is not correct (always 35 seconds and more although I changed it to 5 seconds), and I want to ask everyone that: Is that correct in new Firmware ?
Sorry for my English, it's not good, I'm Vietnamese !

    Hi Neil,
you are correct. The Custom HTML Store that we have developed worked just fine. What about Custom HTML Libraries?
I compared the file AdobeLibraryAPI.js from r23 and r25 and they are quite different.
Up to r24, the Custom HTML Library was incompatible with Custom HTML Store. Apparently, the Store API (adobe.dps.store) was replaced by the Library API (adobeDPS.libraryService). Can you confirm if this is still the case?
Also, I really need a way to switch from one application state to another, something like adobe.dps.store.goToLibrary() or adobe.dps.store.goTo('library'). Is there anyway to achieve this? Maybe using the Library API?
Thanks a lot for your help. Cheers!
PS: I'm from Amsterdam. The time difference is just annoying.

Your N70 has the same language-package as mine: EURO2; I'm afraid, that your N70 was "grey-imported" from one of those countries! NSU looks for the production-code of your N70, which is I think 0523987 (can be found under the battery)!

Thai is hardly alone in lacking support currently. Others are Arabic, Hebrew, all the languages of India and Pakistan, and all the rest of S.E. Asian including Vietnamese.
The languages which are supported are listed very clearly in the tech specs for the iPod. If you must have Thai you should buy something else. For the benefit of other readers, perhaps you could recommend a similar device with good Thai support?

  • N70 - Use of the # key to swithch profiles

I used to be able to switch Profiles on my phone between General and Silent (a really useful idea) by pressing and holding down the # key for 1 to 2 seconds.
Since updating the software last week this functionality has been lost.
Can anyone recommend how to get it back?
    Regards,
    pacman

The Orange variant firmware uses the # key to switch lines... there's no way around that apparently
I believe the most recent version of the Orange firmware allows you to switch off the variant features though... so that could be something to look in to.

Unless you have Orange firmware in which case a long press of the # key activates line 2.
