N73 Backup

I have just ran Nokia software up dater for the first time, and as was suggested, I backed up my phone. However after I have restored it, none of my messages or contacts were put back onto my phone. Luckily I have a copy of all my messages on PC Suite, but now can't seam to get them back onto my phone!
Can anyone help?

I have the same problem, i can not back up contacts (ther is error in pc suite v.6.84) and when i am trying to restore contacts from a back up from another phone (N70) there is an error. This started when i first updated the firmware version 3 and now in version 4 the problem still exists. only when I copy the contacts to sd card, i can back up them. Is ther any idea?

How to retrieve N73 Backup?

Hello,
I lost my N73. Is there anyway to view the PC Suite backup files (such as photos, music and contacts) in MS Windows?
I will replace the phone soon with a new N73, N81 or 531 but for now I urgently need to access my contacts list if possible.

Failed N73 backup and restore

Since N73 keep on freezing on me while someone tries to call me or suddenly restart while I'm composing an SMS message . I tried to have my phone updated with the new firmware using my WinXP sp2 and this is what happend...
I backup my N73 phone and memory content using PC Suite 6.84 and it was good
I updated my N73 phone software from v2.06x to v4.07x using PC Suite 6.84 and it was good
Now I restored my N73 phone and memory content using PC Suite 6.84 and it failed.
The phone keeps on prompting me the memory is already full. I tried restoring the Settings only and same error that I get . even if I select "Settings" only while restoring my phone . it keeps on copying those mp3 . which i don't think those mp3 are part of the setting

phonehacker, N82 is perhaps the first N series phone to have the UDP (User Data Protection) enabled. So, a firmware update via NSU will not erase the contents of the phone memory. Not to mention that FOTA will also not erase the contents of phone memory as it simply downloads only the new portions of the firmware instead of the entire firmware binary, contrary to the NSU method.
UDP is not implemented in older phones such as N73. Therefore, a backup IS mandatory in order to preserve the data stored in phone memory. The backup before update is indeed useful regardless of whether UDP is enabled or not.

N73 Backup.arc

I went to a Nokia Service centre with a faulty speaker problem, and the phone was then backed up by one of the support staff. I requested this person to backup the phone on the PC, and then copy the backup to the memory card on the phone.
This person said it wasn't required, and that it can be done using the phone software.
He proceeded to take my phone and initiate this. Once the phone said "Backup Successfull" or completed, can't remember, I handed it in to the repair centre as per his instruction.
I received the phone back the next day, and on assembling the phone, (Battery, memory card, sim, cover) I tried to do a "Restore from card", which then started and two seconds later said the phone will be restarted. OK.
The backup was not restored, there is no info on the phone. The camera would not work either.
The backup.arc is the only backup I now have to restore the data.
The camera did not work, so I returned and requested them to see what the problem was. They then told me the phone had liquid damage, which I don't understand how that could have happened, as the phone hadn't been anywhere near liquid.
Not that this is my problem, but I'm not happy about it either way; I need the backup.arc information.
I cannot restore the information.
The phone was upgraded to 4.0839.42.0.1, which seems to be where the problem originates. I have two identical phones that had speaker problems, and both were repaired, and the software upgraded. Neither can restore the backup. Even a new backup with this firmware does not restore.
So my conclustion is that there is a problem with the firmware.
I need to recover the contents of the backup, and I know there is a third party app that can read the contents of the backup.arc file, but I don't see that I need to purchase someone else's software to read the contents of a file created by Nokia software. A Nokia agent backed up the contents, and not as I requested, which would not have caused this problem.
So Nokia, what are you going to do to help me recover the contents of this backup.arc?
I spoke to people at the service centre, and they cannot help me. They referred me to Nokia for assistance, and they suggested I try a couple apps from the internet. I have tried what I could find, but still cannot get my contents restored.
I will even provide the backup.arc file if you will recover my data for me. An email address to send it to @Nokia.com.
I just need to get all my info back (sms, contacts, MMS, calendar, etc...)

You're right, the .arc backup file is model-dependent and you cannot restore it on the 5800XM.
Your only options are indeed the two you thought of.

Nokia n73 backup file

sorry for my bad english.
i have been made a backup file long time ago cuz i couldn't copy the pictuers that i'v been captured.
so i took a backup file and now when i wanna backup it again it seems that the PC suit doesn't regocnize the file
but i'm sure that it is the correct file.
so what i'm gonna do? i had a very important files in the backup and i'm very worried about it.

I understood now. However, if you made a backup before you have formatted your computer without any backup for your PC, all files are wiped off and nothing left on the harddisk. Normally, it's not easy to get them back by any means. Professional data recovery services in your area may be able to help you out.
Or if you still have that particular backup file in hand, try to put it back on the default location. It would be C:\Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Application Data\Nokia\ContentCopier (on Windows Xp). The backup file has .nbu extension.

hi.. this is my first post.
After installing the new FW Version 4.0812.4.2.1 i can't return to my old skins and old setup.. i mean i can't repair old backup file into new version like contact messages skin and menu setup...
it's a problem by the new version of the firmware?

What happens when you try to restore the backup? Is there an error message?

I browsed through Nokia phone browser..there I opened inbox.its showing only inbox msgs...and most of the msgs I have stored in Myfolders by creating folders..but where can i find the Myfolder through Nokia phone browser or any other method ... ....

I need to restore telephone contacts to an N73 from a PC backup file:

My N73 was behaving strangely with full phone memory problems. PC Suite backup terminated with a "not enough phone memory" error.
I upgraded the phone software and was then able to perform a backup.
After the upgrade, all my contacts had "disappeared" from my telephone, but I am able to see them in the backup PCCSContact file.

This program will convert the PCCSContact.db file to individual vCard/vMsg files.
These files can, in turn, be imported back to the telephone using PC Suite -- piece of cake!
(The XML file was "empty" of contacts)

[ N73 ] Cannot backup SMS from NBU file

Dear all.
I have a N73 phone. yesterday, I want to up my firmware's phone. So I backup my data ( contact, messages, calendar,.. ) to a NBU file ( I use Content Copier in Nokia PC Suite ).
After that, I restore data from NBU file. But, only contact is backup, and SMS cannot be backup.( I use ABC amber NBU converter to view NBU file, i still view my SMSs ).
Who know what happend? And what will I do to restore my SMSs?

Since you save your SMS in the memory card, the utility will not backup the messages. It copies whatever is stored in your phone memory alone. After firmware update, your message application would have been configured to store messages in your phone memory (the default setting). Try changing the memory in use to your Memory card (Messaging -> Options -> Settings -> Other -> Memory in use -> Phone Memory), and you should be able to view the messages that had earlier been stored there.
Had you selected the option to backup your mass storage also when running the Content Copier utility, you would've been able to backup the SMS stored in your memory card as well in the NBU file. But the file would be quite large, for obvious reasons.
I doubt if the other options given in this thread will work for you.

Backup N73 with Suite

Hi!
I 've tried to backup my N73 (2.0628.0.0.8) with Pc Suite (ver. 6.81 Rel.13). After appr. 80%, I get a message form the Suite that another Software is using the phone and i first have to cancel this software for contiuing the process. But is is absolutly no other Software using the phone!!!
Any ideas??

Backup for N73 restore to N95

Hi Talal,
I strongly suggest NOT doing that. The back-up contains device specific content and settings which might affect your N95 8GB if you did a restore.

Nokia N73 + Pc suite (backup from phone mem to mem...

I've got an n73 with a 1gb mini sd card.
I used the mem card to backup the phone memory and now when I go to restore it back to the phone I get an error "start up failed please contact retailer"
I've managed to fix that error via a Master reset (3* and green button on power up). I think that the data on the mem car is corrupt, however I've got all my contacts on there, is there any way that PC suite can read the backup data on the mem card.
I hope this makes sense.

Access the Card using a Memory Card Reader Via PC. You should get the files on it. Copy the file from the Backup folder (make sure "show hidden files is set to On" in Folder Options under Tools in Windows Explorer) to a Safe Place on you PC. Format the Card with the Usb Reader & then format the Card again with the Phone.
Connect the Card via USB & select Mass Storage Mode. Transfer the File you copied earlier to the Backup folder on it. Click "Safely remove Hardware" Icon in the Taskbar. Select the USB Device & click Stop using this Device. Disonnect the Cable when Windows notifies you that it is now safe to remove the Device.
Again Connect the Cable in PC Suite mode. Use PC suite to restore your Backup.

all i care much is to backup my contacts, but when i checked it using my outlook i can only see one number per contact while some of my contacts on my mobile have multiple tel.#.
i realy need help..... i have a trouma losing my contacts twice!!!!

thanks manta! i guess ur right but what i want is to save all the numbers in one contact at once. its not easy to update all the contacts 1 by 1, it's almost the same as re-typing it all....... exhausting & time consuming.
is there any other program that can save the contacts in full rather than outlook?

N73 restore backup on phone problems

I made a backup using PC Suite and it was succesful, when I wanted to restore it back on my phone the process is also succesful, the phone then restarts but there is nothing there. None of the contacts etc is visible. Does anyone know how to restore the backup properly. I need help badly!

That's really weird 'cuz I clicked on restore and you see it restoring (it took almost 2 hours for a complete restore because of the number of contacts I have) but the text messages are not there. I can see them on the PC though so the backup was succesful.
I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Anyone else knows how I can restore the messages back on the phone?
