N73 Forced Software Update

Ok...here's the deal...I installed Nokia Beta Maps 2 and its messed up my phone and now it's acting up.
I need to do a software restore on it. I remember when connecting the phone to the PC and using the Software Updater program from Nokia, it would allow you to upgrade to the latest software Or if you already had the latest software, it would let you do a restore anyway, wiping the phone clean.
Problem is, I don't see that option anymore, any ideas as how to do a software update??
thanks in advance.

I know it won't take the firmware back to an earlier virsion, but, what it will do is reset the phone to an out of the box state, which, it seems, is what the OP is looking to do.

Can someone please tell me why Nokia thinks it is ok to release software updates for a product, but only make it available to a select few? My product code is 0545039 and there is no update for me. However the same phone with a different codee can update?

Software updates provide bug fixes and enhancement of a product. It's selective due to possible localization and manufacturing differences.

  • Forcing Software Updates

We just finished our patch cycle.  Now we had a client update MSIE to version 11.  I see in WindowsUpdate.log that he applied the update to MSIE version 9 during our patch pilot last week. We run software updates using Task Sequences, so our deployments
have no deadline.  How can I force that client to apply the MSIE 11 patch without re-running an advert\TS?  I'd prefer to do this via PWS and WMI.
I see there are various WMI triggers, but I'm not sure how they apply here.
    Software update scan is {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000113}
    Software update store is {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000114}
    Software updates deployment is {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000108}
Do I need to run these in some kind of sequence? If I just trigger a scan (113), I can see the scan take place, but the missing patch is not applied.  I want the client to realize it's missing a patch, download it from SCCM, and then apply it.
Note I'm not really asking how to apply this one specific patch, I'm trying to understand this process and how I can control it.

If the deployment has no deadline, then the updates will never be installed automatically. There is no way to do what you ask without using a TS or (possibly) a script. That's the whole point of using deadlines and is how updates were designed to work.
Using a TS, while technically valid, is more or less working outside of the workflow as designed for the product.

  • N73 Nokia Software Update Problem

Having this problem right now, trying to update to the internet edition, the update stops at around 80% says connection the phone is lost, I can restart the phone by removing the battery when it restarts I seem to end up with a cross between the music edition & the internet edition, ie. I get the update player which is on all the time but can still use the media key to select various apps and don't get any of the msn messenger stuff, firmware reports itself as the current uptodate.

    Update:
    The firmware version is now:
    V 3.0638.0.0.43
    30-10-2006

    Nokia N73 (14)
Everything seems to work okay so far (apart from some missing apps like xpressprint) anyone know where I can download it?
I can also shutdown the music player by selecting exit in the equaliser settings.

  • Safari 5.0.5 is now showing up on my Software Update list

I know I can download it on Apple's website, but that doesn't solve the problem. Is there anything I can do to "force" Software Update to find new updates?
The funny thing is the same problem is happening on 2 different Macs: a 24" late-2009 iMac and a 13" late-2009 MacBook Pro.

OK, that's how I solved my problem:
Since both of my Macs were having the same issue, I started to wonder if the local network was to be blamed. In order to test if that was the case, I connected my MacBook to the internet using my iPhone 3G connection. Suddenly, Software Update found the newest version of Safari.
In a nutshell: somehow my local network was blocking the access to some Apple servers. That's annoying and I just don't know what to do about it.
Is there anything I can do on that matter?

  • Software Update download lock up

I've tried 3 time to download the latest GB Software Update. Every time my PowerBook G4 locks up. I can move the cursor but that it. I can't click on anything and I can't force Software Update to quit. There were several other updates when I checked and I was able to get the rest with no problems.
Anyone else have this problem or an idea of what's going on?

I hate to ask (but have to because it's come up so many times) but what version of GB are you running right now?
If it's not GB3 (the reason I'm asking), then you have to purchase iLife '06 to be able to update to GB3 to 3.0.4.
If it is GB3, then carry on and ignore this post.

  • Software Update stuck !!!

The Software Update on my iMac doesn't work! The progress bar (scanning the installed software) gets stuck almost at the end and I can't even click "cancel" any more. The program stops responding. I have to force Software Update to quit! I installed Leopard as an "erase and install" two days ago, so it's a fresh as OS...
Apart from that annoying bug, not being able to update I would like to know if it could harm my newly installed OS or the application "Software Update" when I force it to quit.
    Your answers are much appreciated!

    Hi WMR,
Try leaving it as long as you can. Sometimes, when the computer is installing/scanning stuff, and you start pressing around on it, it freezes. So try and rn it again, and leave it to do whatever, for as long as it needs to. If, say after 2/3 hours it is still not moving, then there is a problem.
Also, what type of internet connection do you have? If you're wireless, you may have some packet loss/disconnection that causes the download to time out?
I',m not sure, just throwing some stuff out there.
    Cheers and good luck,
    Julian

  • Force SW Update to reinstall??

I have a very quick (I hope) question at the bottom of this background info.
The other day, I ran SW Update, and saw the update for Java R6 1.0, Quicktime 7.3.1 and the latest Security Update 2007-09.
In the middle of this (during the Quicktime install), I did something I know I'm not supposed to do <DOH, slap to the forehead>. I plugged in a Flash Drive. Instant Kernel Panic occurs here....
So... after rebooting (successfully, with no warnings other than the standard "your mac crashed, send a log to apple?" dialog, I ran SW Update again. It says there are no updates available. Log shows that Java was installed, but not QuickTime or the Security Update.
If I launch Quicktime, it shows a version of 7.3.1, meaning that it thinks it got updated. But I'm not sure it got completely updated (if that's possible)
Here's the question: Is there a way for FORCE Software Update to reapply those three updates completely, so I can make sure they're applied correctly?
    TIA, Steve

No. Download them and install them again.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
Last but not least, you should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.

I don't know if your phone supports Firmware over the air, but you can check here anyway: http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update
I've also no overview if there are any more recent update that you already have. But I guess you know there is a more recent one since youre asking...
If it is released a more recent fw for the n73 and you cannot download it:
It's likely because your phone is branded from Orange Romania and they haven't approved the most recent update yet.
So what you can do is call Orange romania and ask if or when they will release the most recent update.

iPhoto just stopped working. It loads pictures, but then goes into rainbow wheel forever. Then I try to force quit it, and then the whole Mac hangs up (had to power cycle it to get it back). I am using OS 10.5.8, and when I run software update, it assures me I have up to date software. I have not added any photos since the last time I used it, probably less than a month ago. What gives?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Software update forcing constant reboots

    Hello,
I recently have to reinstall OS X on my MacBook Pro after a failed update to Lion.  I have installed OS X 10.6 (snow leopard) and preceded with the software updates.
However, due to my slightly dodgy Internet connection it looks like the software update process has jammed itself halfway.  The symptoms I am is the machine try's to reboot itself every 1/2 an hour, to install software that doesn't exist. The only way to prevent this from happening to run terminal have something open in vi, as the reboot process can't kill the terminal if it has a application open inside of it.
I have looked everywhere that I know off to find what is triggering these reboot request but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where I should be looking?
    Cheers
    Adrian

Tony G was describing a way of NOT having to use Software Update, a way of "forcing" a re-installation - but see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1593428

  • HT1338 Can't force a software update on my Mac book

I can't seem to force the software upgrade needed to have the app store on my mac book. Now that all updates are driven by that, I'm really stuck. I followed the steps: click the apple symbol, go to software update. It performs the check but it comes back with "no updates available at this time." I definitely don't have the app store so I'm not sure what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're in rural VT and a Mac genius is not so close.

App Store only works in 10.6.6 & up.
There are likely no Software updates for 10.5.8 anyway, but what is it you need?
