N78 asking to remove memory card

Hi there, i have bought my N78 just one month ago and find it amazing for almost every aspect except that it has a problem with the memory card. The fist time i turned on the phone, i have no notice that the Nokia microSD 2gb memory card was inserted as there wasn't any icon in the screen. So as i removed it and put it back in, the card was recognized but after a while the phone showed me a message asking to "remove memory card and press ok".
I replaced the original Nokia card with a Sandisk card and still have the same problem, which is quite annoying because it is a brand new phone and i can't count with the memory card to store any information because after a while the card icon dissapears of the screen and it is like i have no memory card inserted in the phone.
Any clue?? Thank you

There were a few similar issues with cards in other phones in the past - I thought Nokia had ironed these out, but maybe with the N78 still being quite new ..
I guess the most common issue was that the card wasn't formatted correctly. The way around is to format the card in the phone.
Another issue was that the firmware wasn't designed to work with larger volume cards. I'd be very surprised if this was the issue as 2GB cards have been around for ages, however it might be worth checking if you have the latest firmware. To do this you need to use the "Update phone software" option in PC Suite. This will install a newer version of the firmware is there is one available.
If neither of these helps, I guess you could try a factory reset. Not sure how that would help, but you never know.
NB: be sure and backup (and preferably synch) your phone before you attempt to update firmware or reset the phone as both of these erase everything in phone memory.
Have to say, the N78 I used didn't have any problems with it's 2GB card. It was SIM-free, though and SIM-free phones tend to be a lot less problem-prone than network-specific phones.

  • N95(not 8G) KEEPS ASKING TO REMOVE MEMORY CARD

I bought my N95(not 8G) about 4 months ago(second hand) and about 2 months after I bought it I started getting a message saying ,please remove memory card and press ok.
It didn't come with a memory card so I fitted one from my old Nokia 6110(1gig) .Anyway I reloaded the N95 software from the nokia website, and this fixed my hassel for about a month, and now the ""remove memory card and press ok"" is back again.
Also I can access everything on the card with no problems till this happens, then I have to switch the phone off and restart it.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

found this info on another part of this forum, does it work ???  and as I don't have the original card what can I do ???
This is a common issue...here how I upgraded my n95 to 8 gig
insert 8gig sd card into usb reader(thumb drive attachment comes with sandisk 8 gig)
    USE GHOST (disk image software)
make a disk image of old sd card
    insert 8 gig sd card
restore image to 8 gig and select the following options
    expand partition to fit drive
    and convert partition to fat32
This works perfectly and the phone thinks its the old sd card
    Kudos! Thanks!

    Hi nolimit966
Although of no help in your present situation, keep this in mind for future reference although you do need a memory card reader. I have always progressed through increasingly larger Sandisk cards (not even formatting) 4,6,8 and now 16GB by just copying contents (enabling Show hidden & System files) of existing memory card to desktop of PC and back to new card without issue.

try another memory card and see if you experience similar issues. you might have programs that are corrupted and hence make it impossible to use the card correctly, the card itself might be corrupted. you might want to also consider reformating your card. make sure you back up all your data.

  • Approved method of removing memory card from reader

In the past, I have just removed the memory card from the reader when I was finished with it, but I have since read that that is not good practice. The method mentioned in my book is "Click the tiny Eject button next to the card's name in the Source list, and then remove the card from the reader". The problem with that is that I have no such Eject button in my Source list, and no card name appears there, either. First of all, is it wrong to just remove the memory card without any preliminaries? Second, what do you do when there is no Eject button and no card name?

    <but there is a link reading "CANON,,,DC>
what do you mean by "link"?
    <....icons for 12 files appears>
are the 12 files =12photos or 12 folders?
if you see the photos, (usually DSC000143.jpg or similar) then create an empty folder on the desktop and drag & drop theses 12 photos on the empty folder. And that's it you now have uploaded the pics from card to computer.
Eject the card reader, drag to trash.
    Then you can launch iPhoto.
Drag & drop that empty folder over iPhoto et vloia all your pics are imported to iPhoto.
You can now delete the empty folder to the trash.
or it's up to you where you want to put them. In iPhoto or anywhere else.
    and that's it!

  • Turn off phone before removing memory card N95

i have removed the memory card many times to plug into the computer. but last time i did it, i plugged it into the computer and it told be it needed formatting. I tried putting it back into the phone and everything had gone!
This is just advice so you dont have to go through the same problem. Ever since i have turned the phone off first and i also click on eject before removing the card from the computer, everything has been fine so far.

that's a good advice, since the PC have a feature that says you can safely remove the mem card/usb flash!
removing w/o this procedure can corrupt directory of mem card.

  • Removing memory card (Micro SD) from Nokia 6700 sl...

I recently purchased a new Nokia 6700 slide.
I am having problems with removing the Micro SD card that came with the phone.
I tried pressing in the card as with many phones, and although the card does push back, it only comes out to its original postion.
Also, I cannot take it out by simply grabbing it with my fingers.
How am I supposed to take the Micro SD card out?
    Thank you very much.

I had a probable similar case with an earlier phone I had. The memory card seemed stuck and I couldn't get it out. I found a forceps which became my new best friend in getting the card out.
Not that you have to be careful with the forceps if youre going to use on. Don't damage anything.
If there's clearly a problem with your specific device, and it doesn't seem like it will become better after some wear and tear, you might just take it back to the store, or to a Nokia care point.

  • Remote lock & Memory card corrupted issue

Remote lock & Memory card corrupted issue
    Hi Dear Friends,
You might have experienced the "Memory card corrupted issue."
Don't panic! The solution is here!
Your memory card is just 'locked', it isn't 'corrupted'!
For sure, this post would be of great help to you, if:
    • You have enabled the "Remote lock" feature of your Nokia device.
    • You have sent the remote lock message to your device and locked it remotely.
Finding the solution really took me a lot of time. I was inspired by various posts on the Discussion, and decided to find the official notes on the issue. So would like to thank those who shared their tips, and helped us solve this problem.
I'm using E66, (you might use something else), and would refer to E51's and E65's User guide so often.
Of course, I'm not going to explain the instructions, and recommend you to refer to your user guides when needed.
On the contrary, I'm going to explain what may not be mentioned in your user guides.
    Let’s Begin
    What Has Happened:
In short, you attempted to test the feature, your phone was locked, you keyed in the lock code, code was accepted, you used the phone for a while, switched it off, powered it on, you were prompted the Lock code, you keyed in the lock code, code was accepted, you attempted to view some stuff that was on your memory card, you didn't find it, you tried to run a program that was installed on your memory card, the program icon didn't open, you put the memory card in the card reader and connected it to PC, it was not detected, you went to Menu> Tools> Memory card> You saw "Memory card corrupted"!
Don't, don't select the Yes selection key if you got the caution message, "Memory Card corrupted, reformat it?" because your memory card isn't corrupted, it's simply being locked!
But you can't find the unlock memory card command in Menu> Tools> Memory card> Options.
    So? What to DO?
    1. (This step is optional) Disable the Remote lock feature.
(Refer to your user guides) and change Allow Remote Lock> to no.
Then, while the unit is on,
    2. Press the power key briefly, and select Remove memory card.
    3. Remove the memory card from the slot.
    4. Press OK if prompted.
    5. Reinsert the memory card in the slot.
    6. Reopen Menu> Tools> Memory card.
Is your memory card detected? If yes!
    7. Follow tips number 2 & 3 of What to Know section below.
Did you get "Password removed" message?
If no, be careful of the case of the first character.
If you had changed the Remote lock message many times, use the one that was practically sent to the device via text message.
. In case you had set a password on your memory card before, you may also attempt to unlock the locked memory using your own password, not the first eight characters of the remote lock message.
Step seven would make the memory card detectable to the connected card reader to the PC too.
    8. The memory card is detected temporarily, but it is locked and the "memory card corrupted" issue reappears every time you switch off/on the phone, unless you successfully complete step seven.
    What to Know?
    Official User guide Tips:
    1. Remote locking also locks your memory card. (E51 page100)
. Yes, the one mobile phone that sends your device the predefined remote locking message, receives the confirmation message in response, indicating, "Mobile telephone and memory card are locked". But it isn't written in E66's and E65's.
    2. To unlock the memory card, select Menu> Tools> Memory> Options> Remove password, and "enter the remote locking message as the password". (E51 page100)
. Yes, quite clear, but the quoted part ("enter the remote locking message as the password") isn't written on my E66's User guide, and there's a vague precaution on E65's, (refer to number 4).
    3. If the message is longer than 8 characters, the first 8 characters are used as the memory card password. (E51 page100)
. Yes, quite clear good E51, but I don't own you; I have E66 your little sister. I owe my memory card's survival to nice users on the Discussion.
    4. The maximum number of characters allowed is 8. Using more than 8 characters could prevent unlocking the memory card and require reformatting it. If reformatting the memory card is required, all information on the card will be lost. (E65 page28)
. Quite interesting, but it contradicts what good E51 says in number three¡!
. And it contradicts my own experience of the issue (and some other users' on the Discussion) too, since my E66's memory card accepted the 'first eight characters' of the 'ten-character long’ remote lock message that I had previously used to remote lock it.
. The first three tips are quite important and shouldn't have been excluded from E66's and E65's user guides. I don't have the time to download and review all the user guides that support this feature, but at least I read some user manuals and also got the impression (from the posts on the discussion) that there had been not enough information on E66's, E65's, E71's, N96's, and some others.
You may like to do a simple search on Google:
"The first 8 characters are used as the memory card password" site:nokia.com
Since the content of the user guides on the server seem not be searchable for any reason, you won't find any official support result except those of the good users on the Discussions. And the 'Nokia Site Search" brings no result too. (At least on the date of this post).
¡ Terribly sorry for those who have selected Yes to the Reformat caution message. It wasn't your fault. But there's an idiom that says, sleep on it! "Think about it for a while before coming up with a decision".
But now that you have tested the feature and know its solution, don't be afraid, and enable the Remote lock feature again! God forbid, but it may be needed one day!

Dear, I guess, / This article doesn't suit your case. / • You have not enabled the "Remote lock" feature of your Nokia device. / • You have not locked your device remotely. / Because you don't know where the remote lock is and haven't played with its settings. / You need to explain what has happened. / The only thing we get is that your memory card doesn't open. / 1. your phone model, e.g., 5130. / 2. What did you do recently that might have caused this issue? / 3. What methods did you try to unlock it? / Use some of the tips provided above. (except number 1). / Yours

  • N73 automatically ejects memory card

My N73 is the Hong Kong IE version and I bought it in January. The problem is that the memory card just randomly removes itself during normal usage, once i even noticed that everytime I press the '3' key it just removes itself. Is anyone else experiancing this? Also when you select 'remove memory card' in the options menu, is the card information i.e space left, card size etc suppose to dissapear? Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't on mine.Since then I have had to replace the motherboard 3 times and also the memory card. What is the problem? Maybe the wires connecting the motherboard to the keyboard are damaged?

This sounds like a hardware fault - I know of no software which does this.
One thing you can try is to eliminate the software problem (if it is that) is to reset the phone using the instructions you can find in this post :
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=4007
However please be aware that doing so will wipe ALL the data from your phone such as information in your calendar, contacts and so on.
In order to save your data you can use the PC Suite application to save and restore the data from your phone - this software can be found here :
    http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite
If this doesn't work then it's likely you have a hardware fault and you should approach your local Nokia Service Centre to get your phone fixed.
    Hope this helps.
Please let me know how you get on.
    Regards,
    Edward
