N8 Anna Won't play BBC News Flash

I have searched and theres seems lots of messages on here but nothing conclusive. My N8 less than 24 hours old but won't play flash found on BBC news site. Also visited www.techradar.com and at some point was invited to update flash, but adoble site says there is no suitable version for the device. Following this the "Movie Teasers" trailers started to fail and lockup with "ERROR". This may be pure coincidence of course. I seem to be be doing and awfull lot of restarts of a device <24 unpacked.
I thought the N8 supported flash!
Versions - Anna 022.014, date 2011-07-05, custom version 022.014.226.06
Be very pleased to hear any comments.

Good question.
My main motive for choosing an N8 was the camera, I've not owned a smartphone before and I'm normally in front of a PC anyway, so arguably I don't need a smartphone, but I do need to be familair with them. I also need to take product shots for the web and although I have a Canon DSLR there are issues with close ups and flash indoors.
So the camera was a plus point, and the N8 seems to have the best (allededly). But I needed also to find it at a price that reflected where I thought it stood in the market place, and hardest of all, I needed to find someone actually offering it on contract at a sensible price.
I found a good price, a very good price, eventually. I think on balance I can live with the current known short comings (no flash support and possibly locking up on movie playbacks sometimes). I can still work out how to configure our small company email and mobile synchronicity using the N8, and we already have a couple of Blackberrys.
So yes, I'm going to keep it, at this price. But I advised my daughter (mid 20's) to get a Samsung Galaxy S2, and she did, and its amazing, and it supports flash, and so far she has no issues with it whatsover with it.
Don't get me wrong, overall I'm pleased with N8 even with its limitations, but then I'm paying a low price, had I taken it at a similar price to the S2 then I wouldn't have hesitated to send it back.

  • My iPhone thinks I'm abroad and won't play BBC iPlayer app

I downloaded the new BBC iPlayer app on Monday.  Tuesday is when I tried to use it but it tells me I'm outside the UK and it won't play.  It tells me the same when I try the web-based iPlayer.
    It works fine over WIFI.
I reset my network settings - no change.
I turned off data roaming  - no change
I checked my IP address (I am Orange), it lists a static IP based in the UK with Orange network details on it.
I have a friend who works for BBC conent and he checked my IP with their iPlayer tool - my IP looks fine to them.
    I called Orange.
I spent half an hour on the phone to a woman who didn't seem to even understand how apps worked. She directed me to a link on the Apple Support pages which doesn't even work.  "They don't deal with 3rd party apps" was the last I was told, despite the fact I'm sure the problem is with the phone not the app itself.
    I am frustrated.
Anyone got any idea why my phone would be showing (to the BBC iPlayer) that I am abroad?
I cannot check the UK specific content for 4oD or ITV Player as they will only run on WIFI, and my WIFI connection does not appear to be the issue.
Could Orange be re-routing outside of the UK and coming back to the UK...and that's what confusing it?
What can I do to fix this?

That's what mine said too when I went direct to their checker.
But I use the Speed Test app and that shows a different IP address, one which links to Orange in the UK.
At the moment it's giving me 31.81.44.53, but that Ip2location site gives me 50.19.92.191. Google tells me I am on 50.16.198.92.
    I am confused and frustrated.
I did several full restores yesterday, several times when the phone restarted it gave US as the defualt locaiton at startup, but this morning when I just did a settings wipe, it gave me the UK, and I thought that had fixed it.  I didn't.
    Very odd.
Gosh I thought I solved it then, one of the sites told me my app Onavo was creating a proxy. Deleting the app didn't help - may have to delete the profile which may be buried elsewhere on the phone. Oh, it's in the General tab under profiles - if you have a profile at all.
Cannot confirm if this works yet as I only have 2G at home but if you have Onavo, I think it's creating a proxy server connection (directing you to the USA). Delete the app, delete the profile and please let me know if it works for you!
Can't be more than 99% certain, but removing my Onavo profile has now given me a UK IP. Should work!

  • DVD drive won't play brand new store bought DVDs - makes grinding noise

I just bought my iMac last September and it was going great until the last month or so. First it started making noises when I inserted a new DVD and was slow to start, but it still worked. Then it started taking longer and sometimes rejecting the disc once - I'd re-insert and it'd be fine. Later it started rejecting more than once before it would play and now it seems to have stopped altogether and generally won't play any DVDs. I do watch a lot of movies, but even with a little more than average use it still seems a bit ridiculous that the drive would die or burn out in less than one year, right?? Has anyone else had this issue and/or resolved this issue? I'm new to Macs and haven't had to call the service people before but have heard others say they've had issues with the store service - should I call AppleCare instead? Any suggestions/tips/help would be appreciated. Thx.

It happens. Just be lucky it's still under warranty and give Apple Care a call.

  • Wmv and avi Won't play on new iMac

I used to be able to play wmv and avi on my old G4. I can't play either now. Technically an avi file will open and play on Real Player, but as it "plays" is has neither images nor sound. wmv won't play at all. When I try to open them in Quicktime I get a message that they're not movie files. I downloaded and installed applications called DivX and 3ivx, which apparently are supposed to play wmv or allow Quicktime to play them, but so far they don't.
When I try to drag a wmv file to the DivX converter, I get an error message with that says "The movie could not be converted. It contains no recognizable movie. (-2048). This happens with both new wmv files I download on my iMac, and old ones I transferred from my G4.d
When I drag an avi file to DivX, it says it has converted it, but then it "plays" the way it did on Real Player, with neither image nor sound.
Well it just "converted" an old wmv from 2001, and now it's "playing" without image or sound!
Well I THOUGHT I'd downloaded 3ivx, but it installs a 3ivx folder in my Applications file that doesn't contain the 3ivx application so far as I can tell. The two applications are Get 3ivx! and Uninstall 3ivx.
Can anyone help me out here?

Ok, with the AVI files that say "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." I can't do do that. With the file that gives me sound but not image, it says that the format is Indeo 3 (Perian). One that plays but has neither sound nor image says the same thing. Another that plays with neither sound nor image says IV31. Does that mean anything to you? Thanks.
I don't actually know what a codec is either.

  • Safari is not working. Many (not all) graphics not shown, won't play video, says Flash is missing, will not respond to login or query submissions. Firefox seems OK. Help?

This seemed to happen as I was working today. Pages are not fully loading (spinning wheel on tab never stops) and most graphics don't show. Videos are not playing and game sites say I need Adobe Flash. I tried downloading Flash, but that just didn't happen either. At the same time Firefox seems fine, including loading the same games, playing video, logging in and queries.
It seems like a bug, but ProtectMac Antivirus has screened several times today with no threats found. (Also says its software is up to date as of today.)
I don't want to remove Flash if its really installed and working.
Should I uninstall and reinstall Safari?

    Hi Jonthan ...
    ProtectMac Antivirus
First, uninstall the ProtectMac Antivirus >   http://www.protectmac.com/support/faq.html#qt18
If you want to have a/v software installed on a Mac either ClamXav or Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac  Edition are far more compatible with Apple native applications such as Safari and both are free.
Then try troubleshooting Flash. The plugin you have installed now may be corrupted.
Uninstall then reinstall a new Flash plugin >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the currently installed plugin first.
Now relaunch Safari. From the Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try a video and see if pages load as they should.
    And go to:   HD/Library/Internet-Plug-Ins
If you have ClickToFlash installed, that can prevent Flash content from loading.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info.
If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
And check to make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.   Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

bought new Macbook air. iTunes songs show but are grayed out and won't play. original account on old mac.  how to make air priority account and allow to play songs?

Did you use Migration Assistant to move your content?
Select the folder with the tunes - do a Get Info - for that folder(s) - at the bottom in 'Sharing and Permission's - select the lock icon and unlock the folder (your admin password might be required) - set the privilege for you to Read and Write - select the gear icon - and 'apply to enclosed .......'
You should now have access to the files.

  • ITunes rental won't play on new computer

I rented a movie three weeks ago. Last week, I bought a new-to-me (used) computer and transferred all my content to the new machine. I have purchased iTunes Match, and all my books and music and almost everything works. But when I tried to play my rented movie on the new computer, I got a message saying it wasn't authorized to play on this computer. It's the same Apple ID and all my other content works on the new machine.
Brilliant me, I thought I would just delete it and download it again since I haven't watched it. Now it's just gone.
Any ideas? I have another rented movie still in my rentals folder, but it won't play either.

Yes, I am getting the exact same message. It says:
Could not play the rental “The Cove” because it is authorized to play on another computer or device.

  • Music won't play on new iPad?

I transferred everything from an old iPad to a new one via iCloud.  Why won't music or videos play? I don't even get thumbnails for the songs/videos, and they can't be clicked, even though everything from the old one shows up on the new one.
Is there a step I'm missing here?

Have you considered wiping the iPad and starting all over again? Do you have more than one backup in iCloud!? If you do, it might be worth a shot restoring from another backup.
Perhaps that backup that you used was corrupt for whatever reason, so maybe you would have better success with another backup.
Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Some DVD's won't play on new MB

Got a new MB, 10.4, core 2 duo @ 2GH, 2GB RAM. Fully patched to the latest.
First DVD I put in produced a message saying the DVD region code needed to be changed. Never saw this on any player before but I changed it to region code 1 (or whatever Canada and the US is). The DVD played then played. The next DVD in the series (The DVD's were a TV show from netflix) would not be recognized. I then played the DVD with no problems on an older iBook G4 and our standalone DVD players. So, some DVD's will play and some will not be recognized. All DVD's are same format.
Any ideas before I call apple support would be appreciated.

    George
The problem you're experiencing is the main reason I dropped Netflix.
MANY of the Disks we received were unplayable on my better halfs iMac.
Several wouldn't play on ANY player in the house, due to scratches, chips or cracks.
Hopefully it's Netflix disks and not your player.

  • Purchases won't play on new mac

I just got a new macbook pro, and my purchases were done on some archaic account I had when I had AOL. each time i try to play my purchased music, which I transferred over from my iPhone on a 3rd party program, it says I need to authorize my new computer to play them, then brings up my old AOL account username. I somehow magically remember to password to it, but then when I enter it, it brings up a message saying "blah blah you need to update to an itunes account" and then when I click the "Update" button to do that (even though I already have an itunes account, I just don't think it's all synced up with my old AOL account), it takes me to a page titled "Let's get started" to get my apple ID. Problem becomes, every time I press "continue" it says "an error occurred. the iTunes store couldn't process your request. please try again later." but I've tried several laters, and nothing happens.
help :[ I just want access to the music I already paid $500+ for...

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

  • Music won't play and is flashing?

My iPhone is flashing and generally acting strange. I have noticed since trying to play music - the screen is jumping around/flashing and flicking from song to song?

Yes, as a matter of fact I did.  Hopefully it will work for you and others as well.  The trick is you must have a backup dated before you did the update.
I fixed it reliably with these steps below (on both my iPad retina lte 3rd gen and my iPhone 4S):
    1. Have a backup dated BEFORE the update (preferrably by several days).
    2. Apply the update to 6.0.1
    3. Observe your music not playing for unknown reasons.
    4. Do not break your device in frustration or switch to Android.
    5. Restore your iThingy using the backup you made prior to applying the update in step 2.
    6. Your music should now play, after it finishes downloading.
Note that I did this all over the iCloud.  I have not tried it with direct or wi-fi sync.  Your mileage may vary.
    cheers,

  • Older itunes files won't play on newer computer (Windows XP)

About a year and a half ago, I uploaded my CD collection into my itunes library on a Windows 2000 equipped laptop and then backed up the library onto CDs. Since then, many of the original CDs are gone and the laptop has crashed. But at least I have the backed up music saved on CDs, right? Fast forward to now; I downloaded the latest version of itunes onto my PC and try to play these backup CDs, but I am prompted (with exclamation points) to insert the original file.
What can I do to play my old music? Is there an earlier version of itunes that will recognize these older files?

Are you sure you're selecting a song that was copied to your computer (and not one from a previous attempt)? Just a thought.
If it's still not working, you'll need to copy the files to your hard drive manually.
Open My Music, or whichever directory you want the files to be in.
Then open the CD in a different window.
Click and drag the files/folders the My Music window.
Go into iTunes and add the folders as described in the last post. You'll also probably want to uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" so the files don't get duplicated and take up more space on your hard drive.

  • Bbc news video

hi i am new ive had my imac duo about 2 weeks in general im finding it great but when on internet annoying me a little first up i cant play bbc news video weather etc says i dont have mime plugin ?????? , also i cant get mail to receive google mail , it can send but wont receive also some sites with security like when paying a bill wont load up ?????? then next time will, and last of all i can no longer get my hotmail to work with msn messenger can someone advise me please thankyou

    Hi acemelhaz,
hi i am new ive had my imac duo about 2 weeks in general im finding it great but when on internet annoying me a little first up i cant play bbc news video weather etc says i dont have mime plugin?
I believe BBC Weather uses the Real Player plugin for its video content. What you need to do is install it, but because it's written for the PowerPC, you'll also need to run Safari under Rosetta for compatibility.
also i cant get mail to receive google mail , it can send but wont receive..
Did you follow Gmail's instructions to the letter?
also some sites with security like when paying a bill wont load up?
How should I put this? Some sites are written with Windows/IE-compatibility in mind, which doesn't necessarily amount to Safari-compatibility. For the time being, as a Mac-user, you'll have to come to terms with the fact that there will be a handful of sites which won't work with Safari. That said, where Safari fails, other browsers such as FireFox, OmniWeb or Camino might in some cases. The trick is to use what works for a given scenario.
Some sites specifically check for your browser's user-agent, refusing access unless it detects what it's looking for. If that is what's happening in this case, then you could try spoofing your browser's ID. Enable the Debug menu by quitting Safari and entering the following line in the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/)
    defaults write com.apple.Safari EnableDebugMenu 1
When you open Safari, you should see a 'Debug' menu to the right of 'Help'. Near the bottom of that menu, you should be presented with a 'User Agent' dropdown menu, allowing you to change the browser ID reported. Changing that to 'Windows MSIE 6.0' would be your best bet in most cases.
then next time will, and last of all i can no longer get my hotmail to work with msn messenger can someone advise me please thankyou

  • Unable to play Sky News videos with Firefox

    Can play BBC news videos.
I have removed Ad block plus to no avail
I have un checked block pop ups
I have deleted all history and cache from Firefox.
Sky News videos play on Internet Explorer.
I have all the latest updates.
I unchecked Hardware acceleration but to no avail.
My Flash player is version 12.

Your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • BBC News clips won't play

Video clips in BBC news items keep coming up with "Content doesn't appear to be working. Try again later" when I try to view them in Pale Moon (Firefox by another name) but they play with no problem in SeaMonkey. A setting isn't right in Pale Moon but I don't know which one. I don't often watch clips but every now and then there is one of interest.
I haven't installed any Add-Ons or Plug-Ins over and above any that come ready installed apart, maybe, for Fox-It, my .pdf reader.
Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to resolve it please?

Ok good luck with the repairs.
