N8 Belle and Network Drive mapping.

Hello! Today I tried to move a large video file from my phone to a pc, but I didn't have the USB cable with me and nobody has the mini-usb cable laying around and Bluetooth is way too slow. Then I remembered using the convenient "Map Network Drive" option. I tried looking in the file browser where it was before, but then after googling it I found out that it was removed in Belle.
I hope it's coming back as I remember it to be pretty convenient as wi-fi is pretty fast and I see no reason in removing features with updates.
Thanks

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

• NAS200 loses User Listing - prevents network drive mapping and display of shares

I haven't seen this posted - my NAS200 has been bullet proof Since Dec 2007 when I got it - has the latest firmware, but lately I lose the drive mapping to thios unit - I cn open the admin console and login but when displaying the user list, I see Error: Cannot find number of users. I al;so see no shares as defined. I have recycled and get this to work for a while but it eventiually (10 min to 2 hours) loses connectivity. I'vwe enabled and disabled guest accounts and other features in options. Anyone have any ideas? Is this syptomatic of a firmware issue or other problem. The disconnect is now very consistent but just started in the last few days.

Since no one sems to have any responses - I'll report that I've reset this device many times - it always works for a while then exhibits this behavior - I can access the unit via web and it shows 'error - no users defined' - share mapping reports similar issue 'no users defined'. This seems to be a result of the firmware 'losing' its user information, causing the drive to disconnect (even using the 'admin' user). I thnik it might be due to a heat problem - after it runs for a while it heats up - the top drive noticably more than the lower drive. My problem was using Raid 0 so I need the drives right where they are. So far over two weeks I've transfered quite a bit of data using a sync tools to minimize duplicaitions and recopying files. This is slow but I've made progress. I let the drives cool overnight for example last night, restarted this morning, copied 4000 plus file (about half of one directory), and using logging can see that it then failed to find the share/files at the halfway point, so its off for the moment. Resets, etc don't help. I've had this since 2007 so its out of warranty but I'm still guessing one of the drives is going bad or the unit is heating on its own and the heat contributes to the firmware failure .... any input Junior Specialists?

• How can I change the BlackBerry Link Network Drive mapping from Z: to something else?

Hello,
I generally have a mapping to my NFS server on Z:, and my iTunes library has a relative path to Z: for all of my music - the fact that Link is automatically picking Z: as my network sync target for my device does not work for me to sync music, or anything really. I can't figure out how to change this value to something else.
I found the registry key: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\Device Manager\Device Settings\<DEVICENAME>\VolumeMapping with a default blank REG_SZ - can I use this key at all to manually change drive mappings for my device? If so, what is the key/value pair I need and will this mess up any assumptions taken inside the Link software for synching?
... Also, I have a Feature Enhancement Request to go along with this issue: Add a "Change drive map letter" button beside the "Turn on wireless connections to my computer" button in Link, and add the same option in the context menu to the 'Device Manager' for the mapping (which currently just says 'Explore').
Thanks for the help,
- Jeff

I do not know a lot about this subject but since Device Manager is not a Device and the BlackBerry Phone is not recognized as a Device in Disk management unless Mass Storage is turned ON it looks as if by design you cannot change the Drive Letter.
Also if Mass Storage is turned On in the Phone Settings File Manager and BB link will not work but the BB Phone will then be recognized as a Device in Disk Management and the Drive Letter can be changed, this has no effect on the Drive Letters for Device Manager.
Normally to change the Drive Letter and Paths of a Device once the Device is plugged you would go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, right click the Device and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
Changing the Registry or Uninstalling Device Manager but keeping BB Link or looking for a Utility that can change the Drive Letter such as the one that many XP users had called TweakUI (only worked in XP) or changing the Drive Letter for your Network may be the only way.

• Network drive mapping Issue in WINDOWS 8 Client

HI,
We have 2 Win2k8 R2 Domain controller. & around 100 Windows XP & Windows 7 Client. All the network mapping which was mapped through Group policy
is worked fine.
Recently we have added 5 machines of WINDOWS 8 Client in our Network. We have observed that in none of the Windows 8 client machines, Network drives are not
getting automatically mapped. I checked through Gpresulr/r to confirm that whether the policy get applied or not, All the Windows 8 client machines has GP Applied.
I have run gpupdate & restart the machine, I have slow the network logging of Windows 8 Client, but it couldn't help me.

Hi,
In Group Policy Preferences,is "Reconnect" option ticked? If yes, please un-tick this option and check the result. Meanwhile, please check the below post which is discussing the same problem in Windows 8.

• Windows Network Drive Mapping properties not being associated with Test Stand deployment

I recently upgraded a TestStand/LabVIEW (Developer Suite 2012 DS1) deployment project from a Windows XP Pro OS to Windows 7 Enterprise. Now, when I run the Test Stand deployment, Network paths that used to be hard coded into my File Globals are no longer recognized. I re-wrote the vi's, and put "File Dialog" pop-ups so that I could see what path the control is being opened up at, and what appears to be happening is the Network Drive that I am defaulted to is appearing as if it is "disconnected" in the navigation window, and the path is defaulted to my root directory. I can navigate out to my network path no problem from the navigation window, and after the first time I perform this user action, subsequent executions open up to the path I have hard coded in my Sequence File Globals. However, if I reboot my host computer, I again have to go through the exercise of manually pointing to the proper network location? If I use the Windows Explorer to check Mapped Networked Drives, everything is properly mapped and connected.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior?

Hi ATE Dude 22,
I have not come across this problem before but here is a document from MSDN and one from NI which discuss file path conventions. From what I've seen, UNC is also accepted under Windows XP so I would advise using it for your file globals.

• Network Drive Mapping for users who have Port 445 (possibly others) Blocked by their ISP to a Server 2008 system

Nice to see my original posts are still up. I was hoping that in the ensuing time someone had found a solution. At least I can now see many other posting the same problems. :) Thought I was losing it for a while.
We have 100% proven that the problem (in our case) is from the ISP blocking port 445 (possibly others but 445 for SURE) with the reasoning that it prevents the spread of some Internet "worms". It also just happens to prevent people who work
from home from being able to map to their network drives at work.
What I was hoping was that eventually someone would comer up with a solution for this short of having to load a server using a different OS from Windows. The SMB protocol is the one needing port 445 as far as I can tell. Not all ISP block
port 445 and the laptops that use those ISP's have no problem. Unless they travel. Then it is "hit or miss" as to whether the ISP for the Hotel they stay at blocks it.
I have run multiple tests to prove that this was in FACT the problem. Even the particular ISP in question which is a very large national ISP company freely admits they do this supposedly to prevent the spread of an unnamed Internet Worm. It also
happens to prevent Business use of their Internet by Home Subscribers at they cannot map to their Business Servers which also need port 445 to map.
I have used WebDAV successfully to get around this but at a huge loss of speed and performance. Cloud services all do essentially the same thing and all have pretty much the same loss of speed.
If anyone has come across a method of allowing a drive mapping to be rerouted to any other port, that is the only hope I have short of changing to an alternate OS for the Office Server and even then I cant be sure until I try if it would help. I read
somewhere about the possibility of routing through a proxy but again, the problem would still be that the requests for mapping are expected on port 445 on the server and they will not get through even to the proxy since the originating ISP is the one blocking
the port from the User's system.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated I have posted this question now for several years with no one yet providing a working solution. Hope burns Eternal though :)

Yes, OwnCloud is an option as well as many others. Even self hosted Cloud services such as the WD MyCloud all work. The problem is speed. JungleDisk is the best I have found so far. I am not sure exactly what they use to allow the
drive mapping but it seems to work faster that anything else I have found.
VPN's don't work. At least none of them I have tried. I can connect a VPN with no problem. But still cannot map a drive over it. Actually, there are some issues with the VPN as well but these are just a matter of methodology.
Mapping to the FQDN works for some people while others require the public IP. Some users on some ISP's can map using the FQDN, others have to map to the IP. That in itself was a bit odd.
I have tried every trick I could find including adding the IP and/or FQDN to the Windows Hosts file on the server as well as on the client systems. This actually did help to get the VPN to connect in some cases. However, it still would
not allow me to map a drive letter.
I can create a Network Place, This also works. But it will not allow me to MAP that "network place" to a drive letter. I have tried multiple utilities that allow mapping of Drive letters to almost anything but they wont work to map to a
Network Place.
The software that needs the mapped drive is a SQL database which runs on port 2004. The program itself has no problems at all connecting to the server to run the database. Even on systems which cannot map to the needed drive letter for the documents
referred to in the database. Users can run it and look up all kinds of material but it it is only a half-solution since the database refers to files stored in a "common-mapped" drive letter. Which I cannot Map.
I have tried every possible configuration of the VPN setup I could find, I have even tried a "Test System" with the NIC connected directly to the T1 Modem. With all firewalls off and no AV software. Even if that had worked, there is no
way I could run like that. But it didn't. Same issues. All this did was put the blame squarely on the User's ISP which was the only reason I did it. I had to rule out even the slightest chance that it was something in our equipment.
This was already almost a certain fact since the same user could take their laptop to a WiFi Hotspot at a fast food restaurant and connect as well as map the drive. As soon as they went back home, no drive. On the ones I could convince to pay
the extra charges, if they switched to a business connection from their ISP, No Problems.
On most MiFi or other Cellular Internet devices, No Problem, Although that had a habit of changing. We had a few that worked for a while, then they got a software update for their MiFi which immediately blocked the ability to map. Others
it would be that some models of Cellular HotSpot units worked while other would not work even if both came from the same carrier.
Coincidentally, we had none of these problems before two other events occurred:
One was the release of Server 2008 R2, (which was a kid of "surprise" change for all of us used to Server 2008 R1. Welcomed changes, but not expected with a simple SP release.
The other was IPV6 finally became a reality: June of 2012.
This left us with much head scratching as to what was the real cause of the problem. It took months to narrow it down to port blocking by the Outside ISP's with a 100% certainty. Even tried reloading a system with Server 2008 R1 just to rule
that out. As well as disabling IPV6 on every network device. The problem stayed with the User when Outside and which ISP they were connected to.
Currently we are using a mix of normal VPNs for those who can run them, and CLOUD access for those who can't. Even this is problematic since we have to keep both the local copy and the cloud copy in constant sync so that everyone sees the same versions
of the same files on each one.
Sorry to make this so long but I wanted to cover everything to show that we tried it all. The only thing left short of getting the ISP's to remove the port blocks would be to find a way to route the SMB file requests around port 445 in some way.
I have been told that this is easy enough if using a file system other than Windows but that is not an option even if true.
Thanks for the updates and ideas. I keep hoping that eventually there will be some secure method for mapping a drive letter that does not depend on having port 445.

• Watch Folders and Network Drives

Hello,
I'm trying to find a solution to this and it's driving me crazy. I would like to use a network drive as a watch folder in PSE. I have PSE3 and am curious if this has been fixed in PSE4 (which removes the network drive after you add it, which is very annoying).
I'm curious if anyone has gotten this to work through either using an NT domain account for the file service or any other solutions.
Any ideas?

Well I finally figured out a way to get this working, but it's truly a pain. I moved all my machines into a domain and ran the "Adobe Active File Monitor" service under a domain account that has permissions on all shares I want to watch.
It doesn't seem to work with mapped drives - instead you have to go in through the network neighborhood, but it does work. At that point you can have PSE watch folders pick up changes on a network share.

• "Files not found" and network drive

I'm new to iTunes, and I think there's something fundamental I don't understand about it. I'm hoping someone here can clue me in.
Here's the situation: I have iTunes 7 on a 2.8GHz laptop running WinXP. It's connected via ethernet-based home network to a 400MHz desktop running WinXP. I have a lot of MP3s and M3U playlists created with Winamp on the desktop, which has a much larger hard drive than the laptop -- IOW, I'm not willing to move the MP3s to the laptop, but I want to run iTunes using the laptop's faster CPU (it also has the high-speed USB port my wife's "new" 4G iPod requires).
So what I did was to point the iTunes music folder to the mapped network drive on the desktop and then import all the M3U playlists into iTunes. So far, so good. I can then sync the iPod and all the songs get copied over. However, the next time I reconnect the iPod, all the songs have the "!" symbol next to them, indicating iTunes can't "find" them. When attempting to sync, I get the message that the songs were not copied because they could not be found. I can manually re-point the files to the directory on the mapped drive, but what a pain! The files in the mapped directory are in multiple sub-directories, but iTunes doesn't seem to have trouble searching recursively through sub-directories, so I doubt that's the issue.
I don't see anything in the documentation about problems of this nature with network drives. Is this a "known" issue in the sense that everyone else knows about it except me? If this has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, let me know.
TIA,
Eric
Dell Windows XP Pro

I too find it disturbing that this software is not "home network friendly" I have a similar setup and have digitized 200+ cd's including everything that my kids listen to as well. There are also several wirelessly connected computers in my house, and the last thing I want is a half-dozen copies of every song scattered throughout the house chewing up disk space. So far, I have 3 iPods in our household and my goal is to centrally store music files and allow network access from remote pc's on my network to sync our iPods with music that we own. Windows Vista has this capability with media player 11, and if I were so inclined, I would buy generic mp3 players that are compatible with MS MP sync, but I would like to give Apple a chance to add this feature. If not, the iPods can always be sold on ebay and replaced with MS compatible devices. I don't really want to do this because we do like our iPods.

• My external drives no longer appear in Finder, BUT they do appear in Disk Utility (and network drives appear also)

Hi folks, I hope someone can assist. I have a Mac Mini 2011 running 10.8.5. All has been well. Suddenly, when I plugged in an external flash drive (USB), nothing showed up in Finder. Things I have done:
Confirmed SideBar and other Finder preferences are set to show/reveal external, network, and internal HDs
Tried multiple flash drives and hard drives, using drives formated in GUID/OSXExtended as well as FAT and NTSF. None show up.
Confirmed that the Hidden flag in terminal is not set.
Note: I can see the drives in Disk Utility, but the partitions/volumes are gray and will not be mounted.
Note: Network drives and internal drives appear and work as expected
Note: My network Time Machine also appears and performs as expected.
The only suspect I can think of is a small, free app I installed this morning called Caffein (which manages the sleep mode).
Also, I loged out and switched to another user account on the same machine (that I use solely for the purpose of troubleshooting), and it was similarly affected.
Thanks in advance!
Dave

• Interaction of Bridge and Network drive?

Hi All:
I just put a 1T byte network attached drive in my system and moved all my
photos and rebuilt cache for Bridge on that drive. I did this so I could
access my files from my main computer or laptop on my wireless network. All
seem to work as it should except that since I did this Bridge is crashing
often. There seems to be no pattern. Sometime with in seconds of opening it
will popup a message that it has a problem and needs to close. Other times
I will be in CS3 editing with Bridge idle in the background and it will do
the same thing. Is this a known problem, or am I seeing something new? Ive
not had a big problem with crashes before. It did crash but not very often.
Now its doing every time I use it. Im running XP on both computers with
2gigs of memory in each. The drivers are up to date on both computers. The
network drive is WD world book. This cant be that strange of a thing to do
so Bridge should be able to handle it.
John Passaneau

In most cases I am doing nothing in Bridge when it crashes. More that half
the time Im in Photoshop editing and Bridge is in the background idle and
it goes by by. One thing I notice, when I restart Bridge it comes up in the
folder or task that was were I was the time before it crashed. That is if I
was in directory A, then went to B and while I was in B it cashed. When it
restarts it will be in A, not B like it normally would. As for the drive
speed when I'm on the laptop it's a wireless connection. On the desk top
it's a hard wired connection to the router of about 6' or 2m you choose.
This is a local network and I'm the only user. I can notice the speed
difference when I load or save photos as there is no way a network drive is
as fast as a local drive in a computer.
But then I'm only using the network drive to store files and Bridges cache.
Photoshop and Bridges scratch disk are on local disks in the respective
computers. The desk top scratch disk is on a separate high speed disk which
is shared only with windows scratch file. These are both older computers
but they fast enough to run Photoshop well. My thought is there is some
interaction between the World Book network drive and Bridge but figuring
out what to do about it is going to be tough. A network drive is in essence
a computer/hard drive/network interface in a box. In this one the computer
is running Linux. In fact I can access this drive from anywhere even here
at work through the network.

• Apple TV3 and network drive

I like Home Share, but when is Apple going to give us Apple TV owners an option to stream our privately owned content from a network drive? My Panasonic Blu-ray player does this, why not Apple TV. Please add this option to Apple TV in the next firmware update? Please? Can somebody from Apple please respond to my request and maybe suggest this option to Apple for future firmware updates? Please? Home Share is cool, but I have to keep my power hungry computer running 24/7. It would be nice to add a 2 drive raided NAS to my network and stream content to my home theater from said NAS, while using my Apple TV. NAS drives only use a few watts from the wall, so this would save on my electricity bill.

The only way currently to do this is to jailbreak your apple tv and run XBMC on it. It can be a little tricky to set up but it is possible. I agree, this should work out of the box. It is not clear why Apple is resisting this add-on. Most folks don't have an extra computer that they can leave running for content sharing. If they do, its an old one that is too slow to do this.'
Probably not what you wanted to hear, but the truth.

• AEBS and Network drive

I am keen to upgrade to the new draft n basestation as I think the ability to have a hard drive connected to it is the coolest feature of all. However I believe I am limited to a drive that connects via USB2.0 as that is all that the new draft n basestation supports. Is this not significantly slower than a FW800 connection would have been? I am interested in the G-Drive 500GB drive but need to make sure I buy the right one.
PowerBook G4 15FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 1GB RAM

Thank you.
I am disappointed that Apple has not taken advantage of the full speed of the "n" and am excited about this feature for having a networked drive attached in my wireless environment. My primary use for this at this point is as a back up drive so while it would be nice if this operated as fast as possible it isn't all that important - just irritating. I would like to be able to use the drive as well or perhaps through a hub have another drive on which to keep music files for streaming into iTunes. My PBG4 only has an 80GB hard drive which is perilously full (only 9GB available) and if I could shift the 16GB of music onto such a networked drive I feel I would get better performance out of the PBG4 when editing video or just using it for general email/internet access.
I do sort of wonder if at some point Apple will release a version of the AEBSn with more options for connectivity which is one thing that makes me somewhat hesitant to rush out and buy one right now, particularly as my PBG4 is not "n" compatible at this point, but given my space issues I am eager to use the network feature. I am surprized that Apple didn't tout this as the best feature of the new basestation.
