N8 - Default Browsing Application

Hi,
I've downloaded Opera Mobile 10, and been using that. It is so incredibly much better than the default browser I can't even describe it. However, if I open links through mails etc, it always uses the built in browser even though I've changed it to Opera in Default applications. Any way of fixing that?

If you search the forum you'll find this topic has been covered several times recently.
Basically setting it as default doesn't work properly and it's unclear if it's a symbian or an opera problem.
You may be able to find more info on the opera forum.

  • If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
    UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
    Test Cases:
    All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
    Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.

  • Could not initialize the application's security component when clicking on a hyberlink from LotusNotes, default browser Firefox

I have Lotus Notes 8.5 installed on Windows 7 computer.
    Firefox 4.0.1 works fine.
But when I change FF as default browser and launch a hyperlink from My mail client I get an error "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behavior when accessing security features."
After this error I can open tabs but no website will work.
But if I close Firefox and reopen it will work.
When Firefox is running, if I click the hyberlink from my mail client, it launches without error message and works fine.
Gave Write access to profile folder. replaced cert8.db etc, but it is not helpful.
    I installed Firefox 4 - same.
Installed Firefox 5 beta - same.
Installed Firefox 3.6.17 - error message is there but Firefox keeps working after launch.

In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
Open Finder and use one of these:
    * Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
    * Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.
    * Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    * chflags nohidden ~/Library

I am deploying an application using firefox. I am using the mozilla.cfg file to lockdown firefox and I don't want firefox to be the default browser.

Try the option to "Force Firefox to make itself the default" as shown in this article - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_browser
Another possibility is your email application may be hard-coded to use IE.

  • Recently, whenever I try to open Firefox, I get a dialog box: Exc in ev handl: TypeError: brw is undefined (JavaScript Application). Firefox is definitely my default browser

    Question
Recently, whenever I try to open Firefox, I get a dialog box: Exc in ev handl: TypeError: brw is undefined (JavaScript Application). Firefox is definitely my default browser.
    After clicking OK Firefox opens.

Doesn't work out for me either, so I keep it disabled, because it slows down the searches, and it won't stream its additions onto the pages after the first page of search results. Streaming or page zipping allows me to scroll down to the next page of search results without selecting the page number.

After restarting my computer, the mail/internet browser/pdf viewer applications keep reseting themselves to the default applications:

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
For default PDF settings; You can use Preview to view several types of image files, including JPG, GIF, TIF, PSD, PICT, PNG, BMP, and SGI. You can rotate, resize, and crop images, and you can convert them to different file types.
You can also use Preview to view and search Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
Preview is also used to preview documents before you print them. In another application, choose File > Print and click Preview. Preview opens with an image showing what the printed document will look like.
You can choose to open all PDF documents in Preview. In the Finder, select a PDF document, choose File > Get Info, click "Open with," choose Preview from the pop-up menu, and click Change All.
To learn more about using Preview, open Preview and choose Help > Preview Help.
    For default browser and e-mail:
    Setting your preferred Internet applications
You can choose which application opens when you click an Internet address link in a document (such as an email message), open a Web Internet Location file in the Finder, or click an email address on a webpage.
For example, you can make Safari your default web browser and Mail your default email application.
To set Safari and Mail as your default Internet applications:
Open Safari, then choose Safari > Preferences. Click the General icon, and then choose Safari from the Default Web Browser pop-up menu.
Open Mail, then choose Mail > Preferences. Click the General icon, and then choose Mail from the Default Email Reader.
Learn how to change the default Mac OS X email and Web browser applications with Mail and Safari, in Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
Note: If you are accustomed to using Internet preferences in earlier versions of Mac OS X, note that Internet preferences is not included with Mac OS X 10.3 or later. In Mac OS X 10.3 or later, use Mail and Safari to change your default applications.
Choosing an email application other than Mail
    1.
    2. Open Mail (/Applications/Mail).
    3. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
    4. Click the General button.
    5. Choose your desired default email application from the Default Email Reader pop-up menu.
Note: You may need to set up the email application with your email account information. This information is not automatically exported from Mail.
Choosing a default Web browser other than Safari
    1. Open Safari (/Applications).
    2. From the Safari menu, choose Preferences.
    3. Click the General button.
    4. Choose a different browser from the Default Web Browser pop-up menu.
Safari and Mail shouldn't be deleted

After changing your default application, you should not delete Safari or Mail, even if you do not plan to use them. You will need them if you wish to change your default settings in the future.
    Hope this helps...

  • Can't open links through applications - xdg-open default browser?

Trying to open a link through an application such as Pidgin gives me the following error:
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: firefox: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: mozilla: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: epiphany: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: konqueror: command not found

    /usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: links2: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: links: command not found
...and then shows me the following in the terminal: http://gyazo.com/aa5232a846762f42edc95994f8a2a15c
It doesn't even try to open it with Aurora which is what I have set as my default browser in Xfce settings.
xdg-open http://www.google.com produces the same effect.
This only happens since I did a fresh Arch install a few days ago.

There are so many wonderful tools in the *nix community, xdg-open is really not one of them (IMO).  It is drastically overly complex - it's just a really convoluted shell script, open it up in an editor sometime.  This complexity leads to countless situations in which it will produce undesireable behavior.  I may be the least "unix-like" tool on my computer ... or at least it was until I removed it and replaced it with a much simpler version.
Admittedly this is the jumping-ship option.  Or really jumping-ship while tossing a molatov cocktail back to watch the whole ship burn ... but it works.  The skeleton of my replacement script can be found here.  Customize it to your tastes once, then plop it in xdg-open's place and your set.  Just keep a copy around to re-replace xdg-open if/when it gets updated by pacman.

  • Open default browser from a java application

How is possible to make a java application that open an html file in the default browser ?
    Thankyou
    [email protected]

You can do that by running the command "start <url>", for example using Runtime.exec().
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start http://java.sun.com");Jesper

  • Make firefox handle URLs from other applications, when not the default browser

I know there is a preference for this SOME WHERE because I saw it. Now I want to change it.
I want to toggle whether clicking on a URL in some other app (like my email) will be handled by the Macintosh Default Browser (Safari) or by Firefox

Only the default browser can handle links automatically.<br />
That is handled by the OS and can't be affected otherwise.
If you do not want to change to default browser to Firefox then you need to drag the link in a Firefox window or otherwise open the link in the preferred browser.

  • Connecting to a website with default browser

Hi I am kind of new to Java, anyway I have written an application that displays information from a database in a table. I wanted to be able to right click on a particular entry and then connect to a website based on the key field. Does anyone know how to start the the users default browser, from within my application (eg netscape) and then connect to the specified site
    Cheers

You might want to take a look at BrowserLauncher. It is a much better method than runtime.exec.
I dont have the link to the site with me, but search at Google for BrowserLauncher, you should get the link.
I think it is also registered at sourceforge.

  • How to change the default browser in Xfce

    Hi all,
I just installed Arch and am still using Openbox, but I was looking for info on how to change my default applications. After reading through several posts and documentation pages, I came across two handy files in my /usr/share/applications folder called, simply enough, Preferred Applications. For other newbies out there trying to change their default browser and having trouble succeeding with
    $ nano /usr/bin/xdg-open
this seems to be a pretty quick fix. It feels pretty obvious, so I'm not sure if it's a warranted post, but I know it was a neat feature to discover and thought others might benefit.

You may want to mark your post as "[SOLVED]" so people that are looking for this info know that it is not just a question that has not been answered. And so people that are looking to help don't open and read through to find out it is not needed.
Or edit the title of the post to say "A way to change..." or something so it looks less like a question.

  • How to change default browser to Firefox.

    Hi,
I've upgraded our Solution Manager 7.0 to EHP1. Most of the applications that I use: sld, smd, user admin, etc. run fine in my default browser, Firefox.
But when I use a workcenter, RCA for example, and I open a webdynpro application which runs on a separate browser window, Internet Explorer is always used. How can I change this behaviour to choose the right default browser ?
    Regards,
    Joan

    Hi Joan,
You can set in your Firefox. Go to Tools->Options. Choose the Main tabs, then press button Check Now in system default and if your firefox not set as default browser you will be asked to change the default browser from IE to firefox. I've been using firefox as default browser to test workcenter service.
    Hope it helps.
    Rgds,
    Desty.

  • Ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox although my mac switches to the firefox window as this is my default browser- what to do? Previously this has always worked without a hitch...

ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox athough my mac switches to the firefox window as i have this set to be my default browser- what should i do?

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • Firefox is my default browser but when I click on a link in mail it no longer will open.

Firefox is my default browser. It always opened links from email in Firefox. Now, suddenly, when I click on a link in email, it no longer opens. If I make Chrome default, it will open in that browser. I've tried switching back a couple of times after reboot, but links no longer open in firefox. I don't know what happened to change it.

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

All of a sudden (I think after the last firefox update) links in other web pages won't open firefox to access the page when firefox is my default browser but works when I change my default browser to Internet Explorer and I can't figure out why. Help!!!
