N8 - Downloaded OVI maps won't work offline

I have recently downloaded two map sets, so they could help me find my way outside my homecity. Since I downloaded them, I expected to have them available even without a network, simply because there's no network in many places I go to.
However, I can't check my position or the streets or such if I have no network. Is this how OVI Maps is supposed to work? Online only?

@tuxette
If you are without network access so Assisted GPS cannot be utilised, you are totally dependent upon Integrated GPS positional method and due to compromises in GPS antenna size/position within candybar form of N8 this may be unsatisfactory; ironically the E7 a similar Symbian S^3 has been reported as being better in this respect than N8.
You could find that using only Integrated GPS (found in Menu > Settings > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning methods) that it takes 20 - 30 minutes outside away from tall buildings to establish first positional fix, although subsequently it would be easier.
Although no longer officially supported by Nokia there is nothing to stop you enabling Bluetooth GPS and utilising a Bluetooth GPS receiver, although this rather defeats the object and compatibility of said unit can also be an issue.

  • If Nokia/Ovi Maps won't startup

    This problem is usually caused by corrupt map data.
    To fix this issue, you first have to delete the current map data. Using File Manager, delete the "Cities" folder on your memory card/mass storage.
    Then start up the Nokia Maps application and download a few kb of map data so that it recreates the folder and file structure required for the map data.
    Finally, reinstall your map data and voices to the phone using Ovi Suite or in the case of the latest Betalabs V3.06, using the Update function direcly from the phone.
    This solution has been known to work with V3 when it too fails to start. With V3, Both the "Cities" folder and the "qf" file need to be deleted. The remaining procedure is as V2 above.

    Hi thakaran
    If it wasn't for the loss of data I would suggest that you carry out a "hard reset" with device off hold down green, red and camera keys while pressing power button until Nokia "shaking hands" appears which will make your phone revert to out-of-the-box condition. This will revert to OVI Maps version pre-installed in phone firmware, you may need to delete E:\cities + .qf file from memory card. You could always download OVI Maps update directly:http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/software/maps_i nstaller_3.04_10wk17_b07_s60_5.0.Nocs.sis

  • Ovi Maps won't open in Nokia 700

    I bought Nokia 700 2 months ago and I have been using Ovi Maps perfectly until last week, when after plugging my device in to my laptop I got a message that I should update the Maps application. I followed the instructions but there was not enough disc space, so the installation stopped. I unplugged the device and made some space, then plugged the device again and performed the update.
    After that, I can use the navigation application as well as the check-in application normally, but the Maps won't open from the icon. I tried reinstalling software, reinstalling the maps, nothing. I cannot find the Ovi Maps version as the application does not appear in the Application Manager. I open the Maps settings, I can see the maps I have installed, but no info on the version.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks!
    Solved!

    OK, I think I solved the problem.
    I had to open Ovi Store and download an update of the Ovi Maps (v3.09). It took some time but it now works fine. I couldn't find this update elsewhere, only through the Ovi store.
    I hope this hels you as well.

  • Ovi Mail won't work on 3120c

    I have been trying in vain all day to get email to work on my nokia 3120 classic, to no avail.  I have registered for ovi mail and it works fine on my PC, however it just won't work on my phone!  I have tried using the settings as shown on ovi support site but it's hard to know if I am doing it right (though I'm pretty sure I am, and I have changed everything around a million times but it's not working, no matter what) as they all have different names etc. In any case when I try to connect to my mailbox it just says "connecting to mailbox" for about 2 or 3 minutes then stops, offline, never connecting.  Incidentally I have the same problem with Opera Mini (installing forever, never completing just eventually stopping) though I have read in other topics that it just doesn't work on the 3120c.  Someone please help!  I have trawled the internet for an answer and I have tried everything but it just won't work!

    I have had the same problem and just solved it. My home wireless is with ATT and they told me they have been receiving a lot of problems with users suddenly unable to gain access to wi-fi in their home. When we checked my wireless home connection the I.P address on my ITouch was incorrect. The prior IP address was not correct and 'somehow' got corrupted...no one knows how that happened. My cust service rep was excellent and walked me through renaming my wireless hardware as well as changing my channel - and it worked. we changed the name of my wireless modem/router, then changed the channel...to a different number than it was. You are correct in that the problem is with home service. my rep actually took me to an ip address ---numbers not a www address where we made the changes- I hope this helped. If I can be of assistance please let me know.

  • OVI Maps has stopped working

    I bought the E71 about a month ago and OVI maps worked fine until a few days ago. When I start Maps it finds my current location. I then search for a location and it gives me the option I require. I then select 'Drive to' which is where it goes wrong. It then hangs saying 'Waiting for GPS' Initially a screen popped up asking me to accept and 'drive and walk to' licence and give options to purchase an annual licence, etc. Now it doesn't even do this..
    Version 2
    I'm in a good coverage area with strong signal.

    It seems to me like you are still using V2 and you don't have a navigation license. Did you realise that an update with free navigation is actually available for the E71. Use the link below, select your phone, download and install. This should fix the fault as well.

  • PS downloaded via CC seemed to download fine but won't work. Won't even open a file/document.

    I recently got a new computer and I have CC so I downloaded the CC app and downloaded LR and PS. LR runs/works fine. PS seemed to download ok but won't even open a new file:picture. I am very frustrated as I have spoken with CC tech support and they were of no help, in fact that didn't even have a clue how to navigate Windows 8! I have been working on this for a week and now very behind on my editing. Not sure who to call or what to do. Please help!! Thank you!!!

    What does the crash report say about the name of the faulting module?
    Yes, crashes like that are usually due to the video card driver. (though I was guessing from the original description that the image was just not drawing)
    Have you tried disabling GPU drawing in Photoshop before opening a document?
    Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

  • Downloading Ovi Maps 3.3 For N97

    and dont show me the 3D land marks =S
    anyway way to fix it ??

    My N97 has the latest software. I cannot install Ovi Maps with free navigation v.3.03 via my phone software updater.
    First, I got the a message saying "not enough memory - delete some data" - I have 29 GIGS in mass memory and 73 MB on phone memory.
    THEN I reinstalled the old version of Ovi Maps and now begins the install (nearly to the end for about 30 minutes) and NOW I get the message “download failed.” Tried it now 5 times (restart phone, etc).
    When I tried to download the new map app via Ovi Suite (I have the latest version), the new Ovi Maps version does not show up at all in as an "update."
    When I attempt to download the new Ovi Map app s via the web, it points me back to my N97 to download via the phone software updater (so caught in a loop).
    It is forcing me to download via my phone sw updater, yet fails every time.  What do I do?
    PS: I always have problems like this with this stupid, expensive phone and wish that I had never purchased it and I am sick of having to come to this board to do anything with this useless POS phone!!! Thanks for listening,
    A very annoyed US Customer.

    Connect the phone to PC  and thru' Windows explorer first delete the 'Cities' folder and the 'qf' file..Disconnect the phone..
    Open Maps on phone and click on the spanner icon-->Internet-->Online and come back to menu..wait for about a minute and then close the application.. Now connect the phone again to PC and try downloading the Maps data thru' OVI Suite as you tried before..

  • Google Maps won't work on Curve 9300

    I know there are a lot of questions about Google Maps, but I have tried every solution I could find online and nothing works for me.
    I am able to download the Google Maps application, version 4.5.3. But when I try to load the application, it says "Network Unavailable: This application requires a data connection, and some Blackberry devices require reconfiguration to work properly. Please visit www.google.com/gmm on your computer for more info."
    I visited that website and it doesn't give any more information. I have an unlimited data plan through WIND and I am able to access the Internet browser perfectly fine, so the data connection shouldn't be a problem. I have tried downloading the application through my mobile network and my wi-fi network, as well as running it through both networks. Nothing works. Can anyone please help me out? I appreciate it!

    You must have the BlackBerry Data Plan. Not a generic unlimited data plan.
    I am not sure who your "WIND" carrier is, but I know the Greek carrier WIND dropped support for BlackBerry about a year ago.

  • EL Map won't work with numerical index - works with string

    If I populate a map with a numeric index, the values won't appear when I refer to it as ${myMap[0]} in JSP. In my servlet I populate myMap by doing a put(0,value).
    However, when I do a myMap["index0"] or myMap.index0, it works! I simply change the line that populates the Map to put("index0",value).
    Why won't it work with a numerical index? Does it have something to do with JDK 1.5's autoboxing? I cast the 0 to an int in the put( ) method, but that makes no difference.
    What could be happening here? Does it work for you?
    Thanks.

    Whats causing this?
    Basically autoboxing puts an Integer object into the Map.
    ie: map.put(new Integer(0), "myValue")
    EL evaluates 0 as a Long and thus goes looking for a Long as the key in the map.
    ie it evaluates: map.get(new Long(0))
    As a Long is never equal to an Integer object, it does not find the entry in the map.
    Thats it in a nutshell.
    JSP page demonstrating this:
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"%>
    <%@ page import="java.util.*" %>
    <h2> Server Info</h2>
    Server info = <%= application.getServerInfo() %> <br>
    Servlet engine version = <%=  application.getMajorVersion() %>.<%= application.getMinorVersion() %><br>

      map.put("2", "String(2)");
      map.put(new Integer(2), "Integer(2)");
      map.put(new Long(2), "Long(2)");
      map.put(42, "AutoBoxedNumber");
      pageContext.setAttribute("myMap", map);
      Integer lifeInteger = new Integer(42);
      Long lifeLong = new Long(42);
    %>
      <h3>Looking up map in JSTL - integer vs long </h3>
      This page demonstrates how JSTL maps interact with different types used for keys in a map.
      Specifically the issue relates to autoboxing by java using map.put(1, "MyValue") and attempting to display it as ${myMap[1]}
      The map "myMap" consists of four entries with different keys: A String, an Integer, a Long and an entry put there by AutoBoxing Java 5 feature.
      <table border="1">
         <tr><th>Key</th><th>value</th><th>Key Class</th></tr>
         <c:forEach var="entry" items="${myMap}" varStatus="status">
         <tr>
           <td>${entry.key}</td>
           <td>${entry.value}</td>
           <td>${entry.key.class}</td>
         </tr>
         </c:forEach>
    </table>
        <h4> Accessing the map</h4>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap['2']}"} = <c:out value="${myMap['2']}"/><br>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap[2]}"}   = <c:out value="${myMap[2]}"/><br>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap[42]}"}   = <c:out value="${myMap[42]}"/><br>
        <p>
        As you can see, the EL Expression for the literal number retrieves the value against the java.lang.Long entry in the map.
        Attempting to access the entry created by autoboxing fails because a Long is never equal to an Integer
        <p>
        lifeInteger = <%= lifeInteger %><br/>
        lifeLong = <%= lifeLong %><br/>
        lifeInteger.equals(lifeLong) : <%= lifeInteger.equals(lifeLong) %> <br>
        That at least explains what is going on.
    Not sure exactly what I would do to "fix" it. Would have to look at what the requirements are. But basically I think it would end up as having to use Longs rather than Integers as keys in the map, meaning autoboxing could not be used.
    Cheers,
    evnafets
