N8 Feature or Flaw

If I place the N8 on a table camera down, I can't hear the phone ringing as the speaker is an integrated in the camera face, so naturally I turn up the ring volume. If I place the camera screen down I can hear the ringer but can't see the notification light.
This seems rather odd to me? Would it not have been a better design to have the sound emitting out of the top or bottom edge of the device?
How about a firmware upgrade that will also use the charging led as a notification light that will then be visible when the device if screen down.

It's not like that camera bulge is at the center of the phone so if you put the phone face up shouldn't you still be able to hear the phone clear? You should know better since you have the phone I'm just guessing, no if you put it on a surface like a blanket or couch yeah probably the speaker gets covered up but on solid surfaces you should still be able to hear.

  • Finder Date Format

How can I change the date format in Finder??
Now the dates appear like : November 15, 2005
    I want 11/15/05 or maybe 11/15/2005
Or is this one of those many areas where someone at Apple decided they should tell us how our finder looks. Does anyone know if change the country setting from US to some other country would do this?

    This gets stranger.
I changed the long date format to: mm/dd/yyyy
(for example: 11/17/2005) and most of the date formats did change, Except that I have a comma after the date I can't get rid of. And the "date created" column when I display my desktop is using the full date. all other dates are in the long format I specified.
The dates feature is flawed as well as poorly designed. I as a user should be able to specify how I want dates displayed without having to change global settings which can screw up other things.

  • Office 2008 - What for?

What's the big deal with Office 2008? From what I've read, I don't see any really good reason to buy it. Can anybody tell me why I would want it, given that I already have Office 2004, Pages, Keynote, Numbers etc.
Is there anything that it offers that make it a 'Must Have' App.?
    John

Well, "must have" might be a strong phrase... I'm testing it now and don't see anything extremely new, save for a more stylish look.
I was a "power user" of Office 2004 from the start, but with an upgrade to an Intel MBP and Leopard, I've since switched to Numbers and Mail in place of Excel and Entourage.
I tried to make the switch to Pages, mostly because Office 2004 crashed with terrible frequency and I was losing a lot of valuable time and work (I write for a living).
But a few things made that switch premature.
First, Pages export to ".doc" feature is flawed. It works great for simple documents, but anything over 20 or so pages with embedded graphics would crash Word for my PC-based recipients. I found a workaround which involved exporting, opening in Word, re-saving and then opening in Pages, and then re-exporting to .doc again... but that's a hassle.
Second, for all of Pages wonderful features, it lacks two that facilitate the writing of large documents -- split-screen windows and Notebook Layout View. Both are implemented in Word 2004 and Word 2008. When Pages gets those features, I'll make the jump. Until then, I'm stuck with Word. And the main promise of Word 2008 is that it might crash less than 2004 did, so... there you have it.
If you don't think you'll use either of those features and you don't write complex documents, I'd recommend just going with iWork '08 instead.
    Hope that helps!
P.S. Meanwhile, something Word doesn't do that I wish it did, is use Apple's Dictionary.app in place of the one provided by Microsoft. Apple's app is far superior. If anyone knows how to make that happen, please let me know.
P.P.S. If you try Office '08 and get the spinning beach ball every time you open, try tossing the .plist files for the individual Office apps. You'll find them in your Library/Preferences folder. It fixed an annoyingly long startup-time in Word for me.

  • Can't control volume on toslink ?

I have the Apple TV connected to a Linn Movie Di (5 channel amp) via the optical connection. I'm getting audio, but the volume is constant--changing the volume level on the amp has no effect? Has anybody seen this problem?

as an A/V professional, i would consider this feature a flaw with the comcast box. when you program your cable box's remote with you TV or stereo system's code, the volume control then defaults to the TV/stereo's volume control. if anything, each product should only have gain adjustments in the setup menu to allow devices to be balanced to each other.
as a linn owner, you should have some regard for sound quality and understand that if apple did provide volume control for the apple tv to the masses, that thousands of people would have the volume on the apple tv very low and the volume on their stereos cranked up very high... creating a gain problem and thus reducing fidelity.

  • Serious flaw with new "Package" feature?

How could this have been overlooked?
The Flaw: The new package feature doesn't consider linked images that are in opactiy masks. They are not copied to the new folder.
    Can anyone else confirm this?
    To test:
    Create a new document.
    Link unique image-1
Create a rectangle with a fill
Link unique image-2 into rectangle's opacity mask
    Save file
    Then choose Package, everything checked
When I do this, only 1 image is copied into the new links folder, image-1, while image-2 in the opacity mask is not copied and simply links to the original file/path.

Thanks, just submitted the bug, shown below. Hope it's fixed soon, was looking forward to this feature.
Might also request a feature. I wish the "go-to-link" in the links window actually goes to  linked files that are in opacity masks, selecting it, not just center over it and leav you guessing which shape the opacity mask it is in.
    ******BUG******
New "Package" feature in Illustrator for Creative Cloud users does not package linked images that are in opacity masks:
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create new document
    2. Draw Rectangle and fill with color
    3. Enter Rectangle's opacity mask
    4. Place linked image (JPG, PSD) inside opacity the mask.
    5. Exit opacity mask
    6. Save file to desktop
    7. Go to File > Package
    8. Check everything, such as to copy links and create a links folder.
    9. Save to new packaged folder
Results: New folder with only the AI file and text report. Report shows there are no linked images.
Expected results: New folder with AI file, Report file that mentions linked image, and  a sub-folder named "links" containing the linked image in the document.
If the linked image is placed outside the rectangle's opacity mask, then Illustrator will copy the linked image to the new packaged folder. As is, this feature is broken. The first document I tried had 30+ linked images in opacity masks, none were packaged.

  • E90: physical design flaws (but good features)

I come from owning and using the 9500 Communicator and I recently 'upgraded' to the E90. I don't know how I managed to get one, what with all the 'production' issues of this model and the lack of stock, but I have had the 'low baseline' E90 for a few days now. I would like to make some comments and see if anyone else agrees/disagrees (and if Nokia is listening...)
    The Major Design Flaws are:
    1. Silvery, shiny bits that get scratched and worn.
Why? The Communicator is a niche market that is going to only appeal to previous Communicator owners or techs who need computing power in a PDA. So why make it with shiny bits when we are all boring geeks? Within a couple of days I have scratches everywhere and reports of the inner cursor pad being badly worn... I've had the 9500 for over 2 years and it look pretty new. A colleague has the 9300 for the same amount of time and it looks pretty dog-eared!
    2. Camera lens is in primary place for a finger to smudge it.
Why put it there or why put the inner cursor pad there when anyone using the cursor will have their finger wrapped around and touch the lens?
    3. What with all the problems of the keys scratching the inner screen why reduce the baseline?
With the baseline reduced the two inner pads in the corner do nothing as they do not touch the (reduced) profile - and hence the screen scratch problem (?)
    4. Minor manufacturing problems?
Uneven feet (it rocks!) and microphone/speak buzz problems?
The good points are the new features (although not some changes especially when they were so perfect and useful in the 9500!)
    1. Big outer screen.
    2. Good resolution of screens.
    3. Quad band. 3G, etc.
    4. GPS. Maps, etc.
    5. Better media facilties and support.
    6. Better browsing and WLAN support.
    7. Better camera.
    8. Good hinge.
Last thing, how is Nokia going to compete with Apple (iPhone in particular) if Nokia 'PC' suite is not available for the Macs?Message Edited by son_t on 31-Aug-200709:08 PM

Really I respect you but I really cannot stand such low technical cultured objections.
Well, I am not an MD in Mechanical Engineering, but I am looking at the facts. 9300i was much lighter than E90 and so is the SE p990i. If it is not a material problem, maybe it is a design problem. Maybe they put too much dead weight in. As an example, I think that, if Nokia used the same keyboard as on 9330i, the keyboard would have been much better and the phone a little lighter.
I did not want to be offensive..
    I argue on solidity of 9300, personally I had 9300 and 9300i..
The first also had a crack starting from an inner edge. The plastic used was not so good for me. The external cover soon became worn at the corner...but was lighter.
The keyboard of 9300 was good..really good, but E90 is better: you can also retro illuminate it!
Dead weight??? You have to know the weight optimization is one of the thing a designer perform. This process take not so much time, using Finite Element Analysis Software. It is a iterative process. It seems you miss the E90 has some metallic parts (it is a plus) and the plastic and the finishing is at highest level.
Considering what is inside the E90 I found the overall dimension and weight are a great success!
Let's see reliability of the finish, let's see reliability of the keyboard..time will give us the answers.
I only agree about some minor design faults like the pad touching the inner screen.

  • Find my I-Phone feature flawed?

IS it just me or does the "Find my iPhone" feature have a flaw in that it can only connect to a wifi it recognizes.  If stolen, then unless it has been in public wifi areas and connected prior to the theft - and the person possessing the phone goes to that public WIFI area - it will never connect to a wifi to be found.  The likely hood of that scenario is slim and will never occur if the original owner never connected to public wifi's.

Find My iPhone will work with a cellular data connection too.
If the phone is running iOS 7 and Find My iPhone is activated then Activation Lock renders the device useless to anyone who does not know the password.

  • Restore key is a flawed feature

I have formatted and restored my computer several times. I know the drill. I have book marks, addresses, etc.
NOWHERE DID ANYONE SAY THAT I HAD TO SAVE MY FLIPPING RESTORE KEY FOR SYNC.
Now I can't create a new account because my email address is "in use." I can't use my email address to access my account because I don't have the flipping restore key.
In short, Sync is now a useless piece of junk taking up space on my hard drive.
    Good work Mozilla.

    # click "Set Up Firefox Sync" to go to "Firefox Sync Setup"
    # click "I Have an Account" : Connect
    # click "I don't have the device with me" at the bottom to enter the account settings
The "I have lost my other device" link to reset the sync key only works if you have entered the correct user name and password for an existing sync account.
You can also delete your current sync account to start anew with the the same e-mail address.

  • Keyword behavior -- flaw or feature?

The hierarchical keywords in Aperture are nice. There are some behaviors that I have noted and I wonder if this is by design (intellegent) or an oversight.
First: In the Filter or Smart Album HUD you can select items by keyword. If you have nested keywords then the hierarchy will appear in parentheses, for example Dog(Mammal). I have noticed that this only works if your nesting hierarchy is two levels deep. Once you nest deeper than that the parentheses disappear and you see just the subordinate keyword--in this case "Dog". I am guessing this is by design? A long chain of nested keywords might mess up the presentation.
Second: When a keyword is first applied to an image then made a subordinate keyword by moving the keyword in the HUD the higher level keywords don't get assigned to the image. Example I apply the keyword "Dog" to an image then move the "Dog" keyword to become subordinate to "Mammal". The keyword "Mammal" is not applied to my image. If I reapply the keyword "Dog" after it is a subordinate keyword then all the parent keywords are applied to the image at the same time and I can search on those by using the "Find text in image" entry fields.

Odd, as I seem to see at least teh direct parent keyword even if that keyword is three levels deep.
Second: When a keyword is first applied to an image
then made a subordinate keyword by moving the keyword
in the HUD the higher level keywords don't get

I think that is more by design, think of that Keyword HUD as not a link to keywords in your images but a place to store master keys until they are used - so changing structure of keywords has no effect on any exiting images until you re-apply keywords.
The reason I think this is by design is it removes the ability to make vast mistakes very quickly, instead you have to go through an extra stage or two. I think they are afraid some people might change the leywords all around (or remove them to clear the list) not realizing they might be altering how a lot of images are tagged.

  • InDesign auto-size frame feature not working in real time in InCopy why?

We have just recently migrated from InCopy CS4 to CS6 to take advantage of the new features like the auto resize frame option, however it now seems that this feature is not working in real-time.
Basically the steps are needed to be complete before it auto-resizes the frame in InCopy, we use both layout and assignment based workflows:
    1. From an ID document ('doc1'), exported a 'layer' to IC, certain frames are set to auto-size in height using the text frame options. So that editorial can review and make changes to text and the frame should resize according to the specifications set. IC stories are saved to a folder located in a content folder inside the top issue working folder.
    2. Editorial opens the IC software, then opens the ID 'doc1'. Check’s out correct .icml file and makes edits to frame with auto resize.
    3. Frame does not resize according to text frame set options and InCopy file does not respond in same fashion as InDesign.
    4. Change only occurs when InCopy file is closed and updated in InDesign, which is frustrating as this feature would save huge amounts of time serving editorial requests.
Has anybody experienced this type of workflow problem? If anyone can provide mw with some pointers as to what can I do to get this to update in real time perhaps run a script? Update file in InCopy and refresh I will very much appreciate their assistance. I have run out of ideas.
    Thanks!

We've had all sorts of problems with this feature as it should've worked straight out of the box but after some testing we have found that its something to do with the way you open the actual file in InCopy. Which is far from ideal and should have been UAT by Adobe before release.
This will not work consistently work if you open the designed .indd or .icma file in InCopy using the file open command within the application.
If you need this to work, the InCopy user has to open the .indd or .icma file by dragging and droping from OS windows explorer into InCopy, we use Windows 7 acrros all the teams. Check out .icml files add text changes to the set auto resized frames, this process will expand/collapse the frames to fit the content but as you have to use the drag and drop method to open the .indd and .icma file, 2 users cannot access the same time doc at the same time (a serious flaw in the programming architecture!) which stops people working in parallel. Save changes, check in .icml content and close .indd or .icma.
However the flaw comes in if you then open the .indd and .icma file in InCopy using the file open command within the application, before an InDesign user opens and saves the file (updates the design). The corrections added in the previous stage above, will not show the frames expanded/collapsed to take in the added text and instead show over matter???? The only way around this is to ask an InDesign user to open, update and save the design that way the InCopy user will see the same result no matter what file open method they use.
Another suggestion is to design the page to have some of the auto resize frames anchored within main body of text and that way the frames will expland/collapse when checking out and editing the content. However, this does cause issues with InDesign crashing etc. so we have tried to stop this method within the working group.
Have you experienced other more serious issues with InDesign crashing consistently when re-importing .icml files? See other forums here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/671820?start=80&tstart=0
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5045608#5045608
As far as we can see this is a major flaw in how the application(s) work, we have an enterprise agreement with Adobe and purchase a large volume of Adobe products globally but so far the technical support team are unable to find a solution to this and I'm not hopeful of any resolution soon even with the new release of Adobe CC.

-mic should act as 2nd speaker when not used as mic (if possible)
-Bluetooth not finding any devices (at least for me)
-No undo, especially when editing your contacts makes it a nightmare
-Add Field entries made under Contacts editing should be stored so user can easily use the entry again
-Contacts need a default Comments or Notes label
-In Contacts, user should be able to move/sort/arrange custom labels to their liking
-option to hear sounds every time you press a button, not only keyboard
-ability to choose sound for a particular function, for example, say you didn’t like the “New Voicemail” sound, you should be able to change it like you can do in a Treo
-certain photos won’t show up ONLY in “Add Photo” mode when editing Contacts, you just get a black screen
-iPhoto should not come to front of screen when syncing (it does for me in a Leopard seed I’m using)
-Ability to check for new mail every minute, not a minimum of 15!
-Option to keep current screen on when phone is locked for a certain amount of time, like a Treo
    -Wallpaper slideshow and video capability
If Apple thinks that they can intentionally leave “key” features out of the iPhone just to make us think that the iPhone2 is a “significant update”, then Apple isn’t the company I thought it was. Make your phone the “best” it can possibly be for the time it comes out. Don’t leave out “standard” smartphone technology that will make people think twice about trashing their Treo or Blackberry. Adding true GPS or upgrading the internal memory is a different story, but things like the inability to copy and paste, the inability to record video, and the inability to use voice dialing should definitely not be issues with iPhone’s release, especially due to the fact that Apple had more than six months to test the thing. I really hope Apple fixes a lot of these “flaws” immediately or else iPhone won’t be as successful and as respected as it could have been.
Just trying to help. Please forward this to the appropriate iPhone Development department.

  • Top 10 Most Reasonable Feature Requests for BlackBerry 10.3

Real DNA wrote:- In this post I am going to list some of the most reasonable features that I think would be doable and useful for the next installment of the BB10 OS. I'm going to leave out any concept-like ideas and or major overhauls and focus on things that I feel could become a reality.
    1) Ability to hide shadow boxes around app icons on home screen
Michael Clewley already hinted that this ability would be in 10.2.1, but during some of the leaked builds and announcements, it doesn't really seem like it will be coming in this release. If it doesn't come in official builds of 10.2.1, then it should be very likely to appear in 10.3. In the meantime, an easy way to get rid of the shadowboxes is by using a dark or black wallpaper
    2) Ability to adjust App grid sizes on home screen
Following up on the first point, so far there are 3 app grid configurations for BB10 devices: 3x4 on Q devices, 4x4 on the Z10 and 5x4 on the Z30. Having the option to pick between those layout and potentially adding more (3x3 or 5x5) seems like something doable. Now for Q devices it might seem like something a bit unnecessary considering the already cramped screen size, well you would be right in thinking that except for this...is an image I will post in my album.
Granted, that's a bit impractical, but it was pretty nice having the option to basically have 4 or 6 columns. Since they've done it before and the BB10 phones have bigger screens, why not?
    3) Ability to hide icons
Another feature from legacy devices was the ability to hide redundant or just rarely used icons from sight. It would certainly be a good way for me and other people to not have a folder like this...also an image.
    4) Limitless Folders
BlackBerry, why are we limited to only 16 apps per folder? Something like this is pretty simple since you could literally put EVERY SINGLE app you had in one folder in PlayBook OS and BB7. (I've done it before)
    5) Customizable Fonts
Something I that I think was a bit underrated in legacy devices was the ability to customize fonts. I loved having a crisp and professional Times New Roman font or Sans Serif when I wanted to play around and experiment. I don't have a problem with the standard BB10 "Slate" font, but options are always nice.
    6) Customizable LED
I know this is something a lot of people have been wanting for a very long time, so 10.3 might finally be the time for it. There are plenty of very good apps that do this, but when I realized that LG's Android JellyBean skin on the G2 had the ability right out of the box, I figured now would be as good a time as any for BB (who's most notable for the LED notification light) to have it built in.
    7) Battery Saver Mode
Z10 owners, I know you would really appreciate this. Introduced in BB OS 7.1 was a battery saver mode to help increase the longevity of your device when it gets to a certain percentage. And with me having a Curve 9350 with a measly 1000 mAh battery at the time, this was a life saver.

How to Change your BlackBerry Homescreen Tile Layout - N4BB
Granted, that's a bit impractical, but it was pretty nice having the option to basically have 4 or 6 columns. Since they've done it before and the BB10 phones have bigger screens, why not?
    3) Ability to hide icons
Another feature from legacy devices was the ability to hide redundant or just rarely used icons from sight. It would certainly be a good way for me and other people to not have a folder like this...
I would be able to squeeze out a couple more hours of extra use with the mode enabled at 40-50%. For Z10 owners especially, this feature could potentially wipe out one of the biggest or only real major flaw: the battery life. This could also be great for the Z30 and Q10 owners already getting stellar battery life.
Universal Dark/Light Theme and Dark Hub option
This one would be huge in terms of aesthetics and potentially power saving. (Form and function at its finest) For all users having the ability to customize all of the native apps or specific ones to be light or dark adds a nice amount of customization to the devices. Having a Dark hub seems like a great way to increase battery life even more especially if the device is used mainly for communication. If you spend most of your time in the hub anyway, you might as well preserve battery life while enjoying the sleekness it brings.
    9) Landscape Home screen, Peek, and Flow
I'm not going to mention the fact that the PlayBook and Torches could do this because that would be beating a dead horse. I, however, will mention two great benefits it would bring:
    1) Playing games, watching videos, or typing using the landscape keyboard layout - Its a minor annoyance to have to turn the device back to portrait orientation or have to leave the app completely to view where and who my notification is from. BB Flow is arguably a way to differentiate from the normal way of doing things, the "in and out paradigm" if you will, so having this essentially nullified when the device is in landscape just seems counter-intuitive. Keeping the flow consistent enhances the user experience and it just seems more cohesive overall. Also its a bit weird returning to the home screen while your device is in landscape and its set to portrait. Granted the actionable notifications help, but the full solution is best.
    2) HDMI out/ Miracast "Mobile Computing" - One of the things that former CEO Thorsten Heins really talked about was the ability to simply plug into a monitor and have your phone truly be your home/ office/ mobile computer. That's great, but it doesn't really work when my output on a widescreen monitor only takes up maybe a third of the screen real estate (not that big a problem for Q devices). Having a landscape home screen just makes sense if you use or potentially want to use your device for something like that.
    10) Android 4.4 Kit Kat Application Support
BlackBerry is pushing this Android runtime really hard as far as getting more apps and making sure they run as smooth as possible, so it just seems like a no-brainer for them to stay as up to date as possible. Considering the BB10 upgrade cycle 10.2 in September/October and 10.2.1 in January/February it should be expected that a 10.3 release would be in Spring or an early summer. By then Android Kit Kat should have a decent amount of marketshare among android users, so most apps should be updated to support it by then.
That's my list so feel free to tell me what you think or if I missed anything REASONABLE. Some honorable mentions would be customizing the bottom dock, an equalizer, further pull down enhancements and integration with Skydrive and Google Drive in the native file manager.

    - ability to choose deletion of an email on handset only
    - desktop software working with all older BB's allowing drag and drop type of transferring data, contacts etc. (BB link doesn't recognize my old Storm)
    - auto power on/off
    - contacts syncing with yahoo & Outlook (almost two weeks trying to work around it and no luck)

  • How can I delete temporary files in FF. This is very simple in IE but feature cannot be found in FF

IE has a simple means to delete both cookies and temporary files. I can delete cookies in FF but there is no way found to delete temporary files. This is a design feature flaw I assume since I cannot imagine this feature is not in the design..just can't be found. I have no idea about the educated guess of "installed plugins". My use of Firefox is just plain vanilla. I've never added any plugins to it.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Our EFFECT COLOUR CORRECTION COLOUR BALANCE  feature doesn't work on solids. Any clues?

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a light sabre effect. He has followed a series of instructions from the net, but no matter what we try the solid will not change colour using the EFFECT > COLOUR CORRECTION > COLOUR BALANCE feature on the layer.
On the linked page is the file + full instructions:
    http://beyondthewallmedia.com/?q=aftereffectsproblem
Could someone more experienced with After Effects please help us out and tell us why this feature isn't working in this project?
"Using your mouse to slide the numbers, drag the 3 “Blue Balance” labels to the right, up to 100 is you wish. This should start to change your glowing white lightsabre into a blue one. Play around with it, till you have the colour you want. You can slide the “Red” and “Green” Balance labels to the left to lessen their effect too."
Would really value someone taking a look at this for us. Thanks.

I agree with Mylenium.  There are some serious flaws in the instructions.  With no colour in the solid, Color Balance will have no effect.
But your project is also incorrectly built, according to the instructions: you've duplicated the mask 5 times, rather than the layer.
In the precomp, make your solid blue, with just one feathered mask, duplicate the layer 3-5 times, switch all to Add transfer mode.

  • Is this a bug or a flaw in my install?

I just finished a new computer build. Therefore, a new install of PS CC2014. OS is Windows 8.1.
When I open Camera Raw, start processing a picture: If I try to use the "Adjustment Brush", regardless of the diameter I choose, the area that is "adjusted" is not under the selected area shown by the circles. It is about a full diameter away from the shown centre, at about a 45 degree angle down and to the right (like, about 4 o'clock).
I also notice that the "Spot Removal" tool is doing a similar thing (selection off set). All other tools seem to be ok.
If I reduce the size down far enough, at some point the circles turn into a double lined cross. At that point, the selected centre is correct,  but if I increase the size, as soon as the circles, denoting the selected area, become visible again, this anomaly occurs.
I've never heard of this before and my previous installs of PS have all been ok.
Has any one else encountered this? Is it me or a bug or my install?
Thanks for any help on this.
    Derek.

I think we can eliminate the graphics card as a suspect (and therefore its driver).   I just re-connected my monitor using the internal graphics processor. The Intel 4600.  Not fantastic but actually has better features than the card I had hooked up before. (I might as well stay with this for now. It's an HDMI hook up.)
    The problem is still there.
This gets more curious all the time.  At this point It would seem that the the likelihood of this being a bug is more or less zero, as myself and one other individual are the only ones reporting it.
So, I'm thinking it has to be a flawed install. Maybe some line/lines of code are corrupt, if that can happen while still maintaining the rest of the programs integrity.
    Any other thoughts anyone?
    Derek.
