N8 losing C drive space. Guardian app?

I wonder if anyone can help.
I’ve noticed over the past few days that my C: memory seems to be dropping.
I don’t have any new programs or installs, and can only put it down to the Guardian app which I notice is very “image” hungry.
Checking the image folder with “X-plore”, I see many stored images courtesy of the Guardian app.
Has anyone else noticed this and is there any other way of this app not storing images to C: drive?

Well that's the strange thing. No options exist in the app so I deleted it. I then deleted the images with x-plore. It's freed up Just under 15mb.

  • Managing Hard Drive space

My computer's hard drive space had been constantly shifting. For a few weeks, after removing files from my computers, I had been slowly losing hard drive space anytime I use an app, later to recovery bits of space. However, during this week, i went through a collapse of losing almost 300 MB of HD space. Then today, I lost 1 GB. I figure it might be from updating steam (although that was done the day before), but I am really freaking out from this. Can anyone suggest how I can manage my HD space?

your hard drive space will constantly chage in size depending on what you're doing.
if you have 2GB or 4GB of memory - part of your hard drive is being used as a swap file.
check your activity monitor and see how much swap file is being used by your hard drive.
mine show's zero because I have 16GB of RAM

The Hatter..This may be helpful information. I go to force suit and there is both Safari and "Safari web content not responding in red" and this may
be the problem. I delete files and I get up to 50 to 50 MB and then it goes right back down to zero with no use on my part. I made a mistake by

it did not find anything...Thank you, again.

I have macbook air mid 2011 .. Now i am losing my hard drive space without any apparent reason..I am not downloading anything not i am adding anything still that i am losing my hard drive space for no apparent reason..pls pls help..

I have never heard of a relation between the enabled state of Time Machine, and boot. Its probably coincidental.
Try booting in Safe Mode (hold down shift key, whilst booting). Then check for apllications in your Users & Groups preferences that are starting up with login. Disable all startup apps, then eanable them one at a time, booting normall. See which app is possibly hanging.
You can also try doing a Repair Permissions and Repair Disk on your startup drive. This must be done within Disk Utility when booted to your Recovery Partition. To boot to the Recovery Partition, hold down the OPTION key while booting, and select the Recovery Partition drive to boot from. Then run Disk Utility.

  • 10.5 Server losing drive space - logs

I have a G5 that has been running 10.5 server for a couple years now. Last week we had a power failure and when I restarted it could not log in as it could not find the user. (when I logged in as admin the user account I'd had for years was just gone!)
So, I reinstalled the server software (I keep system on one drive, data/files on a second drive for events such as this) and got all of my share points, etc all setup again.
So, after 3 days I notice that the system says it has Zero space left on the startup disk. The startup drive has 25GB of space and ONLY has a fresh 10.5 server install with the combo update applied. I restarted and immediately had 15GB of free space. After 3 hours, I have 5.6GB of free space!
The server log states a bunch of stuff about LibClamAV:

This sequence is repeated and each time it does I notice the drive space goes down about .02GB
What do I do from here? Do I have to update this ClamAV manually? Why isn't there an Apple software update that fixes this?
TIA - I know just enough about the server side to get by, but this is beyond my scope.

Yes, if you want to keep using it. Apple has always been bad at keeping third party software up-to-date.  You can find instructions at Updating ClamAV on OS X Server >= 10.5.5

This is something different. Looks to be a permissions problem while trying to create a temp file while trying to scan a file (probably needed to decompress the file first). I can only guess that in the process of changing accounts it's lost track of what directory to use for temporary files and does not have write access to that one.

Sep 11 11:24:18 Graphics com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.clamd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
This is the clamd scanning daemon crashing, probably because it was unable to scan the file so it crashed and launchd has it on the "keep alive" list, so it restarts it. I don't know whether this particular problem will be fixed by updating the engine. I sort of doubt it. Have you tried repairing permissions?

  • G4-OSX10.2.8- Loses disc space until apps crash

    Hi -
As I run applications throughout the day, my computer seems to lose disk space rapidly, until the applications start crashing and I have to restart.
    For example,
6 am - Start computer, do a command i on the HD - it says 3.5 GB available
6:01 am - start photoshop/illustrator, I look at the OSX HD - it says 3.1 GB available
7:00 am - start InDesign, quit Photoshop, says 2.6 GB available
    7:30 am - illustrator/InDesign start "Unexpectedly Quitting"
8:00 am - All programs are closed - my drive says 2.2 GB available...
So - I restart, and then it happens all over again (although with all programs being used - this is just an example)
I've ran Disk Warrior/TechTools/Apple Disk Utility/Verified Permissions/ - until all errors were gone (several times) and Optimized the drive.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this and/or what I could do to fix it?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Tricia

I know that OSX uses HD space for Temp Files and Cache Files and Virtual Memory when your Main RAM gets low from Apps.
I know specifically with Photoshop you can set it in the prefs of as to how Much Disc space it uses for its Temp use. Also in the photoshop prefs you can set how much Ram you want it to use as well.
If you got 768MB RAM and your Photoshop is using at default 512MB for the app, then your OSX might slow down, as it has less RAM to use, therefore the HD gets used up for VM use and Temp/Cache files are created.
I go into photoshop and set via its Prefs to use no more than 150MB. come on unless you are editing 200MB Image files with 20 different filters, not many people will need Photoshop to use that much memory.
Also I use an app called Macaroni, it lets me run my cron scripts anytime I wish. Using Macaroni allows me to clear out my systems Temp/Cache files (daily/weekly/monthly), especially if you dont leave your Mac on at night.
if you regularly turn off your OSX Mac at night, its likely the Cron utility scripts are not running, which means your Systems Temp Files and Cache Files are building up enough so that your are losing valuable HD space.
Another app that could help is System Optimizer X. It has some features that let you manually clean out your Cache and Temp files without using the terminal.
as for more RAM. more the merrier. I put 2GB in my G4 Dual MDD and it runs faster and snappier than it ever did before.
RAM is cheap now. 2yrs ago when I bought a 512MB DIMM for my Mac it was almost $90. 2 months ago when I upgraded from 1GB to 2GB, I got 2x 512MB DIMM's for $45 each. your Mac will love you for it...and do yourself a favor dont buy "cheap quality ram" Crucial sells some of the best quality Apple RAM...I learned that the HarD way.
one last tidbit, am curious why you partioned the Heck out of your 80GB HD? maybe your Mac is getting confused with all those partitions. HD's are cheap too. You can get a 120GB int ATA100 for around $60 now, keep your main Hd for the system stuff and main apps, and use your new Hd for storage and files.
    Oh and Good Luck.

  • Mail eats up hard drive space

My wife is using an iMac G4 (the first of the flatscreen types), and generally only uses Mail. Safari, iPhoto, and iTunes on it. It has an 80 Gig hard drive. In the past month, I have had to delete more than 20 Gig of space on the hard drive because something was eating up hard drive space.
Today, I was able to narrow it down to the Mail application. When no apps other than the finder were running, the hard drive stayed at a constant remaining size. With Mail running, I found that the hard drive was losing about 10 meg every thirty seconds, even when there were no new messages to be received. In one hour, the hard drive lost more than 2 Gig of available space.
I have performed a search for all files and folders on the hard drive that have 'Mail' in the name, but found nothing that could use up as much space as has been lost on the hard drive recently. Last week, we deleted all messages that were more than 100 Meg in size, but that didn't help much.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be doing this?

Mail just reports normal retrieving and sending of messages through the two accounts, although it did briefly try to sync with .mac until realizing that that account isn't on this machine anymore.
The following processes are there, too:
    pmTool
    mdimport
    VShieldCheck
    mds
    hpdot4d
    SystemEvents
    EyeTV Helper
    SystemUIServer
    WindowServer
    update
    syslogd
    kernel_task
    and, of course, Activity Monitor.
(some of these would appear and reappear occasionally)
Since my original post, I have deleted all of the non-English languages from Mail, and I also turned off the automatic checking of the servers for new messages. Although that did free up more than 22 gig of space, it's still being reduced fairly quickly. (Since I started typing this paragraph, the hard drive has lost .03 gig of free space, and I'm a pretty fast typist...)

  • Is there a discrete, limited space for apps on the macbook air?

I bought a new "air" for my wife and she loves it but ...  Yesterday a message popped up about insufficient space for apps. The box popped up repeatedly and could not be dismissed.  Today, on "spec" I deleted the Google Chrome app and restarted the machine and now it seems OK.  I want to know more.

    Darrell Mcdonald wrote:
The computer has 128GB and when I checked I found about 100 available. However, that was after we got it started again.  When the message was appearing we could do nothing with the computer.
I realize this is a small "hard drive" but she has had it only 2 weeks and it is not loaded up (yet).  What I really want to know is if discrete sections of the solid state drive have been pre-designated for certain tasks. Specifically is there a limited amount of space given to apps?
No, there is just 'space' and you can put anything you want in it.

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.
    Please Help!

You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

  • Limiting the hard drive space on a managed account

I'm setting up a managed account and want to limet the amount of hard drive space the person gets to use
mac minni solocore   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Once again, a macosxhint comes in handy. The hint describes one way of converting an existing account:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031104223355900
Setting up a new account is easier. Just create a disk image of the desired size, making sure the name of the mounted volume is the same as the user's "home" folder (the name of the disk image doesn't matter). Uncheck the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox in "Get Info", and make sure the user owns both the mounted volume, and the dmg file. Place the disk image in the top level of the user's "home" folder, then change the ownership of the user's folder to "system" (root).
Then, from an "admin" account, enter the command below in "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app", substituting the user's short name for 'username', and the correct name of the disk image:<pre style="overflow:auto; padding: 5px; width: 500px ; font-size: 10px; border:1">sudo /usr/bin/nicl . -create /users/username home_loc '<home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/username/diskimagename.dmg</url></home_dir>'</pre>But as I mentioned, there are drawbacks to using disk images and it isn't all that effective unless you hunt down every last place on the system where the user has the privileges to save files (including everybody else's "Drop Box" folders. I only mentioned it because it does get brought up as a strategy.

  • I had no hard drive space on my computer when I synced- Lost alot of info

While syncing my Iphone 4 a while back, I stupidly ignored a warning that said that I did not have enough hard drive space on my computer. It said that some of my info will be lost. So I did it anyway. When it was completed about the only thing that made the sync was my contacts. Everything else was gone, apps, music, photos. I manually installed music & photos but my text messages did not come back. Someone told me to back it up from an earlier backup which I did find in my Itunes folder but I have been kinda timid about doing it. Should I rename this back up (or Iphone) Or what the **** do I do to get back my older text messages that go all the way back to my first Iphone from June 2007?? Help..

    Welcome to the discussions!
463GB sounds about right for "backup" space on the 500GB TC disk. Time Capsule usually "reserves" about 8-10% for system operations, etc. On a 1TB disk, the usable space on my Time Capsule is about 928GB.
If the Time Machine is not backing up to the TC, try resetting as follows:
Open System Preferences and click on Time Capsule. You will need to select the disk that you want to use and click Use for Backups. This should get things going again.
If no luck, then go Hard Drive > Library > Preferences and delete the com.apple.timemachine.plist file and start the process above again.

  • Missing Hard Drive Space + Other Issues

My Macbook's been acting funny lately - it wouldn't always come out of sleep, and every now and then an application would crash but its icon would stay in the Dock and there would be no way to get rid of it. When I tried typing in my password on the login screen (when it was coming out of sleep) the field would keep losing focus and delete everything in it. I have the 120GB hard drive (It says 111, but I assume that's the 1024 vs 1000 thing), and about a year and a half ago it failed, but I brought it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one, which has been working fine.
The macbook had been doing some weird stuff, so I've been using the computer I'm typing on for the last few weeks, but two days ago I decided to reset the PRAM and SMC and try using the macbook again. It was working fine, but then I locked the screen and did something else for a while. I went to go shut it down that night, and it wouldn't show me the login screen for unlocking the screen, and it showed me the spinning cursor instead. I just shut the top, and the next morning it was just giving me a black screen when I opened the top.
I held down the power button to shut it off, and later in the day turned it back on again, and it seemed to be working. I was running a few applications (Firefox, Bitpim, and Transmission) when it started crashing again. The menu bar didn't work, the dock wouldn't show, keyboard shortcuts didn't work, etc. I shut the top and went somewhere for a few hours.
I came back, and was going to shut down the computer by holding the power button, so while it was still in sleep I unplugged both of my external hard drives. When I unplugged the USB one it turned on the computer, so I opened it, typed in my password, and plugged the drives back in. The computer seemed to be working again, but about a minute later a window popped up saying my startup disk's space was low. When I'd shut the top that morning there had been around 40 - 50GB left, but now there was about 500MB left on the disk. The size of my User folder was still the same - around 20GB, and I'm trying to see the size of the System folder now, but the hard drive is being extremely slow. I'm also trying to use Disk Inventory X, but it's taking an extremely long time (like 10 minutes for a file that's only a few KB).
The dock also seems to be "frozen" - no new applications I open show in the dock, even if I'm using them, and when I clicked to open them in finder they showed up in my recently opened folder in the Dock, but didn't actually open. I clicked on them again through that folder and they actually open, but it still doesn't show them in finder. Applications that I've quit (and their process is gone in Activity Monitor) are still in the Dock with the little dot under them that they're open.
The Macbook is still under warranty, but I live far away from the closest Apple Store, and it would be difficult for me to get anyone to drive me there, so I'd prefer some sort of a solution where I wouldn't need to bring it in (But I know I'll probably need to, and I will be able to, just not for a week or two).
Are any of the problems related? Is there anything I can do on my own to fix it? Should I try rebooting it, even if the hard drive is almost empty (Doesn't that cause problems booting it?), or should I wait until Disk Inventory X finishes first?
Edit: There was a folder in /Volumes that had the name of my external hard drive, and had some files in it (The ones that were being used in Transmission), so I deleted those and got the hard drive space back. All of the other problems are still happening though - my dock is still all screwed up, etc.

    Also, some more details:
I while ago I tried rebooting and it just gave me a gray screen and played the startup chime over and over, but I held down the power button and tried again and it worked. However, when I boot it stays on the gray screen for a while before it shows me the apple logo, then it stays on that for a while before it shows me the spinning thing that it's loading. Also, once it boots it hangs on a blue screen for a while before letting me log in.
When I look in Console there's always a million "Feb 5 18:19:58 localhost kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: family specific matching fails" for every piece of hardware from every boot.
For a while when I tried verifying my hard drive using Disk Utility it crashed the computer. I've tried repairing permissions, checked my SMART status, and used various maintenance tools.

  • Losing Hard Disk Space

Hi All. I'm seriously losing hard disk space on my Macbook Pro 17 and it's been doing this heavily since I installed Lion.
My laptop has a 160GB hard drive. Out of this, I can add up only 70GB of files. Add another 20GB of free disk space so that totals 90GB. What's happened to the remaining 50GB hard disk space? Are there invisible files being written that I need to look for? Please help as this is really frustrating. Even using WhatSize doesn't add up to all the hard drive space I should have.

    Naz Hussain wrote:
On mobile backups I only have 1.3MB. I use Time Machine but that goes to an external hard drive.
By default, Lion on notebook computers will also save backups to your local disk. If you have many large files that are changing, that could account for your space.
If any software is creating directories then I can't see it.
The curl and ffmpeg make me suspect that you have some torrent or peer-to-peer software. Such software would generate many large files that Time Machine's local snapshots would backup. It would also be likely to save such files in temporary directories that are hidden.

  • If i download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space?

If I download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space on my mac?

iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
    Photo Management
    Non-Destructive Processing
So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
    The procedure would be to
Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
Review and select in the Manager
Trash the unwanted with the Manager
Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.
