N8 Ovi Maps Lags Actual Location

I thought I read about this problem somewhere but cannot remember where.  I tried searching but did not really find an answer.
When I use Ovi Maps on my N8, either just as a map while driving or to navigate, it appears the icon representing my current location is always a little behind my actual position.  For instance, when my car is in the middle of an intersection Ovi Maps shows that position only after I am a few car lengths past the intersection.  This happens at all speeds.  I have it zoomed in a fair amount so that I can read all the street names.  This makes it hard to navigate where there are roads really close together since you cannot easily tell where to turn.  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Jay

The latest version from the Ovi store did not correct the issue.  I also uninstalled Nokia Bubbles (along with downgrading Qt framework) and still have the problem.  I just installed the latest Ovi Maps from Beta Labs and also upgraded my maps, still have the problem.
As mentioned I have the zoom level set to where the red triangle is about twice the size of main roads (not sure how to read the gauge - might be 230 yrds or so).  I have the map auto-rotating around my position.  In non-navigating driving (i.e., no destination set) the red triangle is centered on a side road when I am completely thru the intersection, sometimes by a car length.  This may not sound like a problem and most times it is easy to figure out, but where I live there are side streets very close to one another and at times it is difficult to know which one to turn.  Also, the rotating/scrolling of the map does not appear to be very smooth or quick, but I am not sure if that is how it is supposed to work.  Also not sure if there is some delay when the map moves (i.e., only every half-second it is updated, etc.).
Anyhow, I am trying to figure out if it is a problem with the N8 GPS, other N8 hardware, etc.
Thanks

  • Route tracking with Ovi Maps without internet conn...

I have been trying to find an app, which would track my  route without connecting to the  internet. This is important in two cases: 1. when there is no service (in the mountains, for instance) 2. when it is prohibitively expensive (like abroad). It is great that I can download Ovi Maps for any location in the world, but I cannot really use it as every app that I know is trying to connect. I found one app, which came close, Parking 2. It does use Ove Maps and one would think that you can track back your car looking at the pre-loaded maps, but this is not the case. It still connects and then loads the maps (which are already pre-loaded on the phone!). And if there is no connection, there are no maps.
Does anyone know of a free or paid app, which can do exactly that: track your route based on the pre-loaded Ovi Maps without connecting to the net?
Thank you in advance for any info

@optiplex - I Understand where you are coming from. It sounds fairly simple. Unfortunately, the maps that ovi has for places like ladakh and other places in the Himalayas are fairly featureless. There are no contours on the map for where the terrain is mountainous. For instance, I have planned an expedition in the Tsomoriri - Peldo - Skarchyu sector. The Terrain ranges from 15000 ft to 22000 + ft. Straight line just aint gonna work. If the map were bit more detailed then I could actually set way points to the destination and then work one way point at a time. Unfortunately, while I am happy that the GPS on N8 works wonderfully well without GPRS/3G or any cellular network, the ovi maps are a let down, in that they are not very detailed. (not talking about cities and towns and not referring to drive navigation at all which according to me works beautifully.)

    1. OVI Maps and Sport Tracker does not need Internet connection if you did the setting correctly.
    2. Sport Tracker will record your trail. The trail can be shown on the Sport Tracker maps. The trail record can also be exported out as KML file and on the PC screen, display the trail on Google Earth.
Unfortunately, I don't think you can use the trail record to guide you back to your starting position while in the mountain.
So how about this method using OVI maps.
    1. Set your Walk navigation to "Straight Line" instead of "Street".
    2. Record your starting position as a Favorite on OVI Maps.
    3. Walk into the mountain.
    3. Use OVI Maps to navigate back to your starting position by selecting "Walk to". OVI maps will show how far and the built in compass will show you which direction is your starting position.
Not sure whether this is what you needed.

  • HT202570 iPhone map navigation are not accurate compared to the actual location

The navigation arrow is always late compared to the actual location. its late around 3 to 4 seconds and I have tried on the two different iPhones that with the same result I reset location settings I reset the phone but no luck.
does anybody have the same problem and any ideas how to resolve them?

The co-ordinates you posted are not very accurate (hopefully you edited them), there probably should be more digits after the decimal point for greater accuracy.
It seems like Apple Maps can search for Lat/Long but is unable to show it for a dropped pin. I'd suggest you get another app from the store…
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/find-my-latitude-longitude/id668745605
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/location+/id482094847
There are many so search around
It's also worth noting the location services doesn't just use GPS it also uses wifi & cellular towers to get a rough location in situations where GPS is not available (like indoors). GPS also takes a while to get a true lock, it can be upto 12.5 minutes because go how the satellites work. You will need to maintain a clear view of the sky for long enough to get accurate values.
Assisted GPS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
P.S. Google maps in a desktop browser will show lat & long values, just be aware that there are different co-ordinate systems too - if things don't work make sure you are using the correct one

  • Help me locate this place for my Ovi Maps ?

    Hi
I'm trying to search for this place in preparation for when we drive there in rental car from the airport:
Evans & Tselepi 21-26 Aghios Nikolaos 72100, Crete, Greece
Ovi Maps can't find it via online search - not sure if this is related to greek-english translation issues.
Can someone advise me further  ?

  • Ovi Maps on N97

I updated(being the operative word rather than upgraded) Maps to Ovi Maps and lived the interface and the maps being a little lot clearer on the N97, but when i tried using it with downloaded maps it always seems to be behind in location or thinks you are still making a manouvre even when you have made the turn and 10 metres down the road.
It just seems to be alot slower and less responsive than Maps 2 or N96. I know the N97 has a 'slower' CPU than than the N96 but not justifiable that it should lag behind so much. Anyone else noticed this? I know I sometime drive fast, but I dont break the landspeed record either.
    N95,N96 and N97

So far, I find no problem with version 2 as supplied on the N97.
I've used the N95 for the past 2 years, and updated Nokia Maps as least twice, probably 3 times in that time. I saw the Ovi 3 ages ago, and was tempted to install it on the N95, but I was so pleased to get Nokia Maps v 2 working so well on the N95 that I decided to keep it. So far I've decided on the same philosophy for the N97. I don't find it laggy so far. I do miss Ann though lol. I must see if I can download her from the Maps site. I feel I'm being unfaithful to her. And it's pervy having a guy nagging me.

  • HELP- Ovi Maps - Not accurate?

Just acquired my X6 phone last week...with importance on choosing this model being the Sat Nav package. First thing I did was downloaded latest Ovi Maps etc and have been trying system out over last few days. (Using UK Maps in Central Scotland) However...I'm having lots of varying problems continuously including:- 1) Routes are often completely wrong...taking you in the wrong direction, miles away from the route that it should calculate. 2) Big lags in messaging and corresponding map data appearing on screen. e.g. You arrive at a roundabout... before you get any voice instruction at all. Then, you've passed through the roundabout and heading merrily on your way...yet the voice instructions are only beginning to tell you that you are approaching the roundabout... and which exit to take. I mean ....way too late. 3) General lags can be as much as 300 meters. e.g. Map is 300 meters behind your actual position. Then it catches up...only to fall back again. 4) Also seems to show up occasional side roads and junctions which don't even exist. 5) Suddenly...for no reason announces "recalculating route" and appears lost for a while before getting back to where it should be. 6) Other spurious, non sensicle voice commands - e.g. turn right - whilst traveling along a stretch of motorway! I've tested running alongside my old Sat Nav system and also a Tom Tom which work perfectly...but Ovi Maps on my X6 is so far out... it's totally usable. Do I have a problem with my phone...or is it the OVI Maps system faulty? Anyone else experienced this. Solutions? HELP PLEASE!

    Hi Comodo,
    Two examples:-
Trip 1 - from Postcode - G62 6RA to KA12 8RR: Completely wrong route calculated (which I followed out of curiosity) taking me in a very long indirect route. I could find no logic to it at all. Also got badly lost with ridiculous instructions at various sets of junctions and roundabouts when joining the M8 motorway near city centre Glasgow.  There were a great number of errors during this journey. (The interesting thing was that it calculated the same journey in the opposite direction correctly)
Route 2- from KA8 9AE to KA12 8RR  - various problems and errors including lags and delays in info and incorrect instructions or very late instructions particularly at roundabouts.
Thanks for your interest. What do you reckon?

  • C6 Ovi Maps/Navi works, connecting to Nokia Accoun...

    Greetings,
The location sharing feature seems really cool and I'd like to use it with my new Nokia C6. Ovi Maps and navigation works fine for me, however it will not login my Nokia Account. That whole menu is quite buggy actually. It does not "forget my account" either, but if I click it then restart my Nokia, I can re-add my login details... then it attempts to login, but nothing happens. I left my phone to try and login all night, in the morning it still said "Connecting to Nokia Accounts.." and if I cancel it, i will have to click "forget account" and reboot nokia again to make it reappear. Several attempts didn't work though.
I've updated to both latest Symbian version and Ovi Maps.
Is there another Nokia Approved App that would let me share my location? (as often and automatic as possible)
    Thanks in Advance

I re-installed the phone's firmware and this has fixed the bug!

  • OVI Maps has stopped working

I bought the E71 about a month ago and OVI maps worked fine until a few days ago. When I start Maps it finds my current location. I then search for a location and it gives me the option I require. I then select 'Drive to' which is where it goes wrong. It then hangs saying 'Waiting for GPS' Initially a screen popped up asking me to accept and 'drive and walk to' licence and give options to purchase an annual licence, etc. Now it doesn't even do this..
    Version 2
I'm in a good coverage area with strong signal.

It seems to me like you are still using V2 and you don't have a navigation license. Did you realise that an update with free navigation is actually available for the E71. Use the link below, select your phone, download and install. This should fix the fault as well.

  • N97:Ovi Maps crashes after a few seconds

On N97 I had Ovi maps working like a breeze for some weeks now. All of a sudden I see this behaviour. Open Ovi Maps, see the main page, click on My Location the map appears a message about connecting might cost you something and the Ovi Maps disappears.
What should I do the get Ovi Maps working againg. Oh, btw Internet works just fine.

The original maps app that came with the phone will always be there (like music player or photo viewer or web browser) Maps 3.04 works fine on my N97. Best way to install is to remove (as you said you did) all Nokia/Ovi maps from Installed Applications, then download Ovi Maps 3.04 Beta from Nokia Beta Labs. Then use Nokia Maps Loader on PC to first remove old maps, followed by downloading and installing the map data for your region onto the phone (the stuff the Maps app uses to find where you are and to navigate) to avoid having to download 'on the fly', this speeds everything up and avoids data usage. Maps should then work fine ! Well it works for me !!
    Good Luck

  • Nokia OVI Maps - Free Navigation

Nokia OVI Maps - Free Navigation
Mobile navigation for everyone, the Ovi Maps takes you where you want to be and shows you what you want see, with navigable maps for over 70 countries worldwide. All this with only one click. And it's all free.
    - Free Drive navigation
    - Free Walk navigation
    - Free maps and map updates
    - Free Events guides
    - Free Lonely Planet guides
    - Free Michelin guides
You thought Garmin and TomTom were in trouble when Google announced its free Navigation service? Wait until investors hear Nokia's news.
Reuters is reporting that Nokia will offer free navigation on its smartphones. However, instead of just the US (the current Google limitation sans hacking), Nokia will be demonstrating its reach by offering free turn-by-turn directions in 74 countries and 46 languages - a move that should cover 20 million smartphones globally with Ovi Maps available in over 180 countries.
Update: The original San Francisco Chronicle report has been pulled but Google cache caught a bit more saying that Nokia's navigation service is "capable of operating completely offline" unlike Google Navigation which requires data connectivity.
Update 2: Nokia just made the download link live. Hey, where's the N97 and N900.
Update 3: And it's official. Starting today, Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation is free across the globe. Drivers receive turn-by-turn voice guidance including lane assistance, traffic information (in 10 countries including the US), and safety camera and speed warnings while pedestrians will be guided on shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones in over 100 cities across the globe. It all works offline too, which should extend battery life and keep that navigation humming even while puttering about in data dead zones without racking up international roaming charges (take that, Google). From March 2010, all new Nokia GPS enabled smartphones will come installed with the new Ovi Maps application and pre-loaded with local country map data and walk and drive navigation with access to location-aware Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost. Additional premium guides like a weather service and events / movies are also included. Just 10 devices from Nokia's massive catalog are available today a list that includes the N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic and X6.

  • Ovi map search offline problem

Whenever I search for a location offline on my E72, I end up with no results available.
After fiddling with my phone for the better half of a day (including first using online search then turning off the internet to use offline search), I tried deleting all the maps on my memory card and installing only the maps for the areas I need through the OVI suite. Having read earlier threads on this topic, I was sure to wait until the index files were fully transferred.
Now the offline search works, but only for locations within my own city. For locations in the neighboring city, though only a few dozen miles away, I end up again with no results available.
Is this normal or is there any other way I can try fixing it? Thanks.

    Hi sherryglass
Unfortunately I think it is also related to size of country, as with world maps on E72 I can do detailed search of UK "Offline" but say for example USA it has to be "Online"; that said access point in OVI Maps application can be via WLAN or network.

  • OVI map problem with E52

    Hi,
Iv been using E52 for the past 11 months and loved the way OVI maps worked but about 2 months back i had some serious problem related to keypad and since the customer care couldn't fix it they replaced it with a new E52. I am not able to use OVI Maps properly on this new E52 meaning my current location is being shown and also in the search option I am able to search for places but when I am selecting the location and opting for drive to or walk to option then the waiting for GPS option keeps me waiting forever. With my previous E52 this problem never exsisted and the route map was created immidiately. I dont mind using the map service over the GPRS instead of GPS. I have updated the firmware and also installed the latest nokia OVI map software, updated the maps but still facing the problem.
    Please Advise.

    @Manish4ever
    Welcome to the forum!
I am assuming that you will have the same functions as on my E72 a similar S60 3rd FP2 device.
Suggest that you go to Menu > Ctrl. panel > Settings > General > scroll down list to "Positioning"  > Positioning methods - temporarily disable ALL except Integrated GPS, go outside away from tall buildings if feasible, open OVI Maps application and wait 20 -30 minutes necessary for it to establish very first positional lock.
