N8 re-starting or not-starting problem

I have a N8 that worked fine for a few months, then developed a problem.  Several times a week it would re-start for no obvious reason.
Around the time that Anna became available, the phone started to "freeze up", usually from running Nokia Maps.  It would lock up, and not respond to the keys, but I was always able to shut it down and turn it back on.  Sometimes Maps would then work, and other times it would again lock up as soon as I started Maps.  Actually, with Anna I think it got a little better, and didn't lock up as often.
I've now installed Belle, and now the phone sometimes seems to "pause", then the screen goes blank, and the phone starts up again.  Most of the time it comes up and runs, but many times it says "phone failed to start, contact the retailer".
When that happens, the best way to "fix" it is to hold down the power button and wait for the three pulses of vibration, which allows the phone to start up again in a way that it almost always does in fact start up and work.
That's the history, here's my question.  I'm pretty sure I need to bring it in to a Nokia Care Center for repairs, but are there any diagnostic tools available for the N8 that might help me track down what is going on?  My first guess is a memory problem, but while tools for that are available on a PC, I don't think anything like that exists for the N8.
Does the N8 have any kind of log file that keeps track of things like this?
Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,
On my N8 and Symbian ^3 PR1.2 - during the spring and summer of 2011 - I had similar freezes and restarts, usually in Maps or when using the camera, recording different video resolutions between taking pictures. The upgrade to Anna resulted in connection problems, taking a long time to switch between GSM and 3G, and it did not step back and forth reliably between WiFi, 3G and GSM for data or talk. I were unable to locate any log files in the N8 explaining what was going on, and it doesn't seem even a simple "scandisk" tool is available for Symbian phones at all?
After fooling around for a while, it had a refurbish flash of Anna + format of E: and F: - and the phone has been reliable and stable from October 2011 till February 2012 (if I stay away from Swype and beta apps). I don't recall any unresponsive hangs or reboots at all during this time.
I don't know Belle well, but were unable to crash her during a week of intensive use (after a refurbish flash).
So in my experience the N8 must be stable with Anna, when it's had a "delete & restore factory defaults"  + format of E: and F: (or a refurbish flash)
Other thoughts:
A faulty SIM could cause all sorts of trouble. If in doubt, request a replacement from your carrier.
Same thing with a faulty memory card. Try running the phone without memory card for a while after resetting the phone, and format the card in the phone before use. If in doubt, replace it.
A second-hand N8 should be affordable now, for spare parts or replacement. Taking the phone to Nokia Care could be costly, if it's out of warranty?
Best regards
Hans

  • Starting, but not starting since turned on FileVault, installed Mac Office

Guys, I need you! My iBook, Dual USB G3 is acting up. I have never had any problems with it. I recently took all my itunes off, so I freed up like 8 gig of space. She was whirring along quicker than ever. I bought Mac Office and installed it. I also turned on FileVault because of work I am doing. Unfortunately I did both within a few hours of each other. Unfortunately, because I would love to blame Microsoft for this, but I also started FileVault at the same time (about the 5th of Jan). ...and now this computer is almost 6 years old! Anyway, these last few days it has been freezing on me more and more. That's weird. Then this afternoon it froze while I was downloading something. So, I started it up and tried again. The same thing. So, I started it up again. This time wasn't going to try that download. But the screen never came on. Crazy. It made the 'ta da' noise, and the hard drive whirred, but no screen. So, I started it up again. One of the startups led me to the login page once. But once I got to my desktop I couldn't move the mouse. So, I started it up and tried again. I emailed some friends who know a little more, and they suggested a safe start and and a restart and to turn off FileVault. So, after many tries, it finaly started up again, with a jibberished up screen. But it was enough to click on restart. Then as it restarted I tried to turn off FileVault. It was going until it said, 4 more minutes. Then it froze again. For awhile when I turned it 'on' after making the 'ta da' noise, it would accept CD's, and I can turn the sound up and down, but no screen. What do I do now?!
Should I just keep trying to get it up so I can turn off FileVault? Would this be top priority? Should I try a PMU reset?
    Thanks so much

It is really not relevant that your serial number is included, since the program gradually was expanded to include all G3 Dual USB iBooks. The symptoms are what make me inclined to think that there may be a problem.
Here in the U.S., Apple has been making a few exceptions to that three-year time limit.
    Is your external drive FireWire?
Have you turned off FileVault? It may inhibit copying (but, having never used it, I'm not sure about that).
With a FireWire drive, you can make a bootable clone of your hard drive, saving absolutely everything. I use SuperDuper! to do bootable clones.
If it's a USB drive, you can copy over your Home Folder (the one with your short user name and the little house icon). That will get everything except your OS, applications, and peripheral drivers. For a fresh installation (Erase and Install), those will need to be installed from the original sources (discs or downloads).
If you're somewhere where service is hard to come by, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

  • Java Web Start does not start

    Hi,
This is a quite simple question I suppose, but I can't figure out the solution.
When starting my application using Java Web Start 1.0.1_02 the JWS application handler does not show up. JWS does only show a splash picture, then it disappear after 10-15 seconds. No error is written in the Java console window.
No errors occurred when installing JWS and it seems to be correctly installed, and JRE 1.3 is installed. I have successfully used my JNLP file earlier when I had JWS installed. After re-installation JWS does not work.
    What is the error?

The two most likely problems are java version in config files, and proxy settings in config files.
can you run javaws with no args and get up the application manager ?
if yes - look at settings in the preference panel of appman.
if no - look at javaws.cfg manually (in your users home directory/.javaws)
make sure the path to javaws.cfg.jre.0.path="xxx" points to a working javaws executable.
make sure the proxy settings: javaws.cfg.proxy.host and port are ok,

  • 9iAS 9.0.3 / Webcache / Auto-Start does not start!

    Hello!
    I've installed 9iAS 9.0.3 (OHS, J2EE, Webcache) on SUSE-Linux.
I've changed the configuration to use auto-start with the Webcache-Admin-Website and restarted the webcache.
But using webcachectl status shows, that the auto-restart monitor is not running.
"Web Cache admin server is not running.
Web Cache auto-restart monitor is not running.
Web Cache cache server is running as process 8725."
The auto-restart "yes" configuration exists in the webcache.xml - config - file.
So, why is the monitor not running?
    I hope, someone can help!
    best regards
    Harald Gruenn

    Hi Harold,
There's two things which I'd like you to check:
    1. What is the contents of the WATCHDOG element in $ORACLE_HOME/webcache/webcache.xml file? It should look something like:
    <WATCHDOG ENABLE="YES" PINGINTERVAL="15" PINGTIMEOUT="30" PINGURL="/"
    PINGRETRY="3"/>
    2. Are there any messages related to "Auto-Restart" in the event log (default location is $ORACLE_HOME/webcache/logs/event_log)? For example:
    27/Dec/2002:15:20:54 +0000 -- Error: Auto-restart failed to start. /opt/oracle/webcache/bin/webcachemon not found.
    or
    27/Dec/2002:15:28:07 +0000 -- Information: Auto-Restart: WXE-00800 Auto-restart started successfully

  • Java Plug-in and Java Web Start Will Not Start In JDK 1.4.2_03

I can't get the Java Plug-in or Java Web Start to start in JDK 1.4.2_03, but they did work when I first installed the JDK months ago. When I double-click either icon an hourglass displays for a second and then disappears without opening the window. I don't even get an error message.
I've tried reinstalling the JDK three times. On the last reinstall, I followed some instructions on how to completely remove the JDK. Here's the URL of the instructions I followed:
    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-295773.php
    Strangely JBuilder stopped working too.
    I'm running Windows 2000.
    Help!
    Thank you!

    Hi
Once u have got the Certificate from the Verisign there will be 3 chains in that cert(what i think)......Get the other 2 certificates from U r cert(like intermediate and Root)....and install them in the trust and Intermediate folder...
other option is u generate the CSR keeping Sys Date 1 month ahead..( i tried like this only..it worked)

  • Settling Rebate Agreements with Validity Start Date not Start of the Month

    Hello Experts,
I am currently trying to settle a rebate agreement with validity dates November 20, 2011 to December 31, 2011. However, after the credit memo is created, I noticed that the Service rendered date is today's date, but I expected it to be the same as my Settlement Date = November 30, 2011 (a month-end). Please advise if this is normal. If not, please advise how to correct the automatic entry of dates.
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi
Kindly let us know what is the rebate agreement type that has been used for which you are facing problem and for which rebate agreement type you are getting the month end date.Check wheather scale basis is B(Value scale) has been maintained or not for the rebate agreement for which you are getting problem. So check the differences between the two rebate agreement types. As The service rendered date of the invoice line item is used to determine the validity of a rebate condition record

  • Start Patrol not Starting Patrol on PVC300 Cameras

No matter what I try, we cannot get the our PVC300 cameras to "patrol".  This is the case in both the web interface as well as the Cisco video monitoring and recording application.
I have built lists of preset points but the camera never moves when it hit "start patrol".
It works find on "auto pan".
    Any ideas most appreciated.

After you "add" the positions, they will all be in the left box. You'll need to highlight each position and click on "select" so they are also on the right box. The position of each position will be the sequence of your patrol. Click on "save" and go to your home page, click "patrol" and it should go through all the positions one cycle.
    Alan.

  • SOA 11.1.1.5 two Node Cluster BAM not starting on the second Machine

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle SOA 11.1.1.5 in a 2 Node Cluster. Both SOA Managed Servers are coming up fine. BAM Managed Server installed on the primary HOST also comes up fine. But my second BAM Managed Server is not starting. I don't see anything in the logs and on the Console the status is showing as Starting but it never starts. I can access the BAM Console for the one installed on the primary HOST but when giving the URL for the second HOST it doesn't come up as the I don't see an option the server is running.
I have 2 machines for this cluster setup
On machine one with IP Address: *192.168.2.2* all below servers come-up fine
    Admin
    BAM1
    SOA1
On machine two with IP Address: *192.168.3.3* have the below servers and only the SOA is coming up fine BAM not starting
    BAM2 not starting
    SOA2 coming up fine also
After giving user/password this is what I see in the terminal window and it never moves looks like getting stuck:

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle SOA 11.1.1.5 in a 2 Node Cluster.

  • Cssd does not start in non-RAC environment Thus we can not bring up ASM

    Non-RAC environment
    ASM version = 11.1.0.7
    HP-UX Itanium 11.23
After power outage, CSSD does not start on non-RAC environment
Running as root "/sbin/init.d/init.cssd start" does not start cssd
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig delete" and "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig add"
but it did not start CSS
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig reset $ASM_HOME"
It started the CSSD and the "crsctl check css" came back with CSS is healthy
But around 1 minute later it rebooted the server and when it came up again CSS does not start.
They checked /etc/inittab and it looked fine.
Before the reboot we saw this message in the /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log:
Cluster Ready Services completed waiting on dependencies
Again it is a NON-RAC environment. We only need CSSD for ASM. We do not have CRS installed on this server.
Our test system has been down for a week and we did not get the resolution from Oracle support yet !
    Any pointers are greately appriciated.
    Thanks,
    Dzung
