N8 superior build quality saved death by drowning.
Yesterday I washed my n8 on a cycle for 20 mins before realizing! Disaster I thought but quickly dried it off with a hair dryer after removing sim and mem card, then putting on a hot radiator whilst finding my driver to remove battery. A night in the airing cupboard and hey pesto booted up fine apart from menu key so soft reset and jobs your uncle fully functional resurrected n8!
I think most phones would have died especially high end smart phones but I believe my n8 survived due to mimosas spirit build quality, which is a good job because losing it would be like having my arm chopped off.
I love my n8 well done nokia!!

Photos app bug resurrects long-removed photos (related to PNG alpha)

Wanted to report/discuss a possible privacy concern and image glitch, and understand it better for submission to Apple's feedback page: the iPad (and maybe iPhone) Photos app will consitently resurrect long-deleted photos in your Camera Roll, under certain circumstances. These are long-removed photos (as in removed many months ago, prior to the iOS 5 update), and possibly only the reduced-size thumbnail versions.
Note: as near as I can tell, the deleted photos were NOT originally from the camera roll! That's where they resurface, but I believe they are photos from other albums, maybe once which used to by synched to iPad but which I no longer synch. So "removed" might mean deleted or it might mean "no longer synched to iPad"... the images are so old I can't recall.
So the bug, I'm guessing, it two-fold:
1) The Photos app (and/or iPhoto during wired synch?) is not fully removing photos (or at least, their thumbs). They're no longer visible in Photos app, but are being retained somewhere on the device.
2) A glitch in the Photos camera roll PNG handling (which I think may be new with iOS 5) causes those old images ro re-surface when you add a PNG to the camera roll. (The old photos were JPEG, but the image that triggers the bug must be a PNG with alpha channel)
I have seen this on both an iPad 1 and iPad 2, running iOS 5.
Here's how to reproduce it:
1) Synch some photos to your iPad, then deselect them for synching and re-synch (so they're not there any more). Also, add some photos or screenshots to the camera roll and then delete them. I say to do both because I'm not 100% where the old photos come from, and I'm hoping this covers all bases! Actually, most people have already done these things in the past, and can probably skip this step.
2) Generate a transparent PNG using the art app Procreate (and probably any app that saves PNGs to the camera roll with alpha channel). All you have to do is scribble somethign into a blank Procreate canvas, then export it to your photo album. There is no need to do anything special to get an alpha channel or PNG format: you always get that. (Unless you used the Fill command to completely cover the canvas.) Now in the camera roll there should be your scribble on a transparent background. You can email it to yourself and see that clearly in Photoshop or Preview.
3) Here's the glitch: look at your camera roll (thumbnails view) and you'll see that the alpha-transparent background of the image has become one of your old removed photos! Tap it to enlarge and the alpha becomes black (which is fine, although it may seem odd if you intended to paint onto the default white canvas). But for just a moment, before you see the black, you will get a full-size glimpse of the old photo. (Or, maybe, an enlargement of the thumbnail?)
4) If you keep saving more alpha PNGs, you'll keep seeing more and different old photos coming back to life in the alpha regions of the thumbnails (and, briefly, at full size).
5) If you delete all those PNGs and then save some new ones, you'll see the same sequence of old photos reappear again.
Needed fix: removed phtos/thumbnails should be properly purged, and alpha PNGs should show simply black (or some default background) at all times.

Ok, I replicated it and I don't like it! I didn't use the one you marked cause I couldn't call it up properly but I did Bing
transparent gifs and loaded up 3, one was totally invisible in the thumbnail and I could clearly see one of my pics perfectly in the thumbnail but when I brought it to page the gif filled the frame.
I have no idea where the pic came from, I mean I recognize it but from where in the album I have no idea.
Oh yeah, I was wrong about the first pic coming to page, it wasn't the same image but a different one...and I have no idea how the one that came up, (what i thought was the underlying pic) did, or how it got there or even from where.
This is some weird stuff though not as weird as that silly *** movie, what a load of tripe; I should have just spent my
time on this, it's infinitely more enjoyable!
Ok, here's the consensus from my layman iPad view:
What happened now and most probably before was a 'transparent gif' or a partially transparent gif like the one I spoke of first that I could see the edge of or the outer perimeter of, the underlining image with the gif taking up say 3/4 of the thumbnail; this it what it was.
This is totally apparent to me now because of your having me import a totally transparent gif which was invisible over my pic, thus the freaky part I didn't like...keying the thumbnail with one thing and ending up with something totally different when brought to page.
Still doesn't explain where this silly iPad is grabbing these pics from?
But here's something funny; my camera roll shows say 9,200 pics but my, 'iMy System' app say I have like 11,300 which I always thought was a fluke, that it was just reading wrong but maybe it's seeing something we're not. What if all those pics we're deleting to save space or just generally culling have never left the system? Maybe that goofy app is really reading the true count!
Those others up above us here who mentioned privacy concerns.. this could be whats going on, there's a ghost
in the machine and it be our old pics and god knows what else floating around in that iPads memory.
Ok, I'm crazy tired and I have to wrap this up. Least now we know how to replicate this but on the other hand I think we opened up an even bigger can of worms... the mystery of where all those images are hiding in our iPads?
I haven't hardwired to a computer since I upgraded to ios5 so whatever's going on here, leastwise for me is iPad
based and can't be blamed for synching issues like you discuss up above unless what I'm grabbing here is old stuff

1st gen iMac G5 resurrecting from the dead? (strange clicking sounds)

I have a first gen iMac (pre-iSight) that I bought a few years ago brand new. But the past 8 months or so I've been having a very strange power problem where occasionaly pressing the power button does absolutely nothing... WAIT! I know you hear about this problem all the time but before you click 'back' I'll have you know I too have read countless of these types of power problems on forums, but this one seems different!
Sometimes after unplugging, waiting for a few minutes, then replugging the power supply (while all other cords disconnected) it'll all of the sudden turn on. I recently checked inside the computer as one tutorial suggested to see if the first of 4 LED lights turn on when plugged in, and it does, meaning it's not power supply failure. The biggest problem with the whole thing is that is that the "unplug-then-replug"(sometimes upwards of 15 times) doesn't always work, and always seems to happen at varying degrees of inactivity depending on how long the computer has been off.
I've been doing this for 8 months, afraid to turn my computer off not knowing for sure i'll get it back on (which can take up to a day sometimes). And my resurrection methods seem to be more and more futile, as today and yesterday i've had no luck. LASTLY -- and this really confuses me -- I usually hear a very faint but rapid clicking noise when I plug in the computer (before I even turn it on, never happens when it's actually on) after its been unplugged for a while. The sound seems to be coming from near the bottom of the computer, so I cant imagine that it's that dreaded "Hard-drive Death" symptom (since the hard drive isnt even running).
Please, if you can, offer me some insight regarding these issues, I've looked everywhere and it seems I'm the only one having them! I'm almost to the point of gasp! actually finally going to the apple store and paying them to fix it.....

DEVELOPMENT: I got the computer on last night (using it right now)! I think it was off for almost exactly 24 hours since the last time I had it running. The most frustrating thing is that I don't really know what I did differently to get it to boot up again. That whole day I was just checking it about every hour or two, unplugging and replugging the power (at one point I opened the back and tried pressing those two tiny buttons under the fan, one is an internal power switch, and the other some sort of reset button, nothing noticeable happened with either, although the clicking sound that occasionally showed up hasn't reared its head lately). I think my computer is almost at its end, and now that its on I'm going to try my best to keep it running. One more slip into a coma and it might not make it out...

IPod Nano white screen of death - RESURRECTED! :D

Alright, here's the deal...A friend of mine has a new iPod Nano and gave it to me because it had stopped working, and was hoping it was worth something to recover. Sorry about the long story!
It _wouldn't_ turn on. But, when connecting it to the computer via the USB dock cable, it comes on for a few seconds on a grey-whitish screen. Then turns back off, reboots, and tries again. Step 1 step 2. Nothing.
Although, 'Diagnostics mode' or whatnot it is, does work however. It would still be a faint grey screen, but whiter and more vibrant, as if it's saying "Hey, I'm alive! I'm alive!!!" and I can go through settings and make it (sometimes) change colors, and reboot the iPod.
I was thinking since iTunes never recognized it (It was plugged in the whole time) that I would drown in just for the sake of it.
Well, 3 hours later after attempting to kill the poor thing, it... resurrected itself.
I'm serious, it really seems to have unbelievably done it. When turning it on, I get 2 beeps, but no restart loop, the LCD stays on the white screen though, BUT, here's the good thing.
NOW, I hear the system 'click' sounds when using the buttons and such that it's going through the menu, good news so far! It seems like it because after the 'boot' sequence (it appears to boot very fast, strangely).

So I suspect that somehow, this method of submerging it under water, letting it dry, blowdrying it, and then leaving it in the heat, somehow restored the SD chip inside of it... possibly only for now... I'm going to use this moment to hopefully get all data off the device, and see for one last time if it's fully restorable...
I have the power! Ok, so I hooked it up to the wall charger (just put the wall connector on the USB cord) and it now beeps two times, and after about 30 seconds or so, I get to the main menu, screen still white, but I can certainly hear the click letting me know I'm 'navigating' the iPod. It doesn't appear to have any music on it, or maybe it does, but I need to connect some earphones first. Or, it supposed to be display the 'sad iPod' icon, but I just don't see it, therefor, I'm blind as to the status of it.
I likely guess it's the battery, since every time I disconnect it, it goes dead. Yep, just looked back, still on. Yep, still menu clicking. Yep, I can start it with no problems now. Any clue what I can try to do to resolve this? Obviously it's turning on, and it seems to be doing something, it boots, (apparently) so that's a good sign.
Please, is there any hope at all in this iPod? At all?
AND, IT JUST BEEPED 2 TIMES AGAIN! And I was just typing... why did it do this? (Funny thing is, how it still works!) Is that really the menu button clicking? That would explain it, I mean it only plays the menu clicking sound AFTER about 30 seconds of it 'booting' to the iPod firmware, so it obviously has some sort of life to it. If I hook up my earphones... Holy Mac! I hear music! It's alive!!! It's alive!!! Oh my man!!! Yes!

The sad thing is, it still has the white screen of death, and the battery is apparently fried still (or needs a good 24-hour charging).
This iPod has been sitting dead as a dud in the storage room for a good 1 year or so, unused. And now it came back to life in a flash. Unbelievable.

Your problem was moisture. It was wet inside and sitting around for a year let it all dry up.
If you get this kind of thing happening, speed the process up by putting the iPod into a zip lock baggie with a dessicant (you know those little silica pouches) or even some rice to absorb the moisture. Let it sit for a few days and it should dry it all out.

It even erased all my backup data on my Passport drive. The Passport drive shows all of my downloaded backups from 2011, but when you double clickon the various backup dates, they all show as empty. I was able to restore my music by downloading a 3rd party application, but my pictures are gone. I was having a conversation thisweekend and an eavesdropper said she has the EXACT same problem.

Actually, it is more than that. If you read the licensing agreements for any OS version or app obtained at the app store, it will become clear: the license for any app or OS obtained at the app store is not transferable. Hence it is tied to your Apple ID and will remain so - it cannot be removed.
You are supposed to remove anything obtained at the app store from the computer before giving/selling it. Your father will also not be able to reinstall the OS if need be.
Which OS version was on the Mac originally? You will need to use internet recovery (Command + Option + R) to erase your drive and then reinstall the original OS (if Lion or later). If it came with an install DVD, boot from that, erase the drive and reinstall. After that, your father can very easily download/update/reinstall any OS or app using his own Apple ID.

You can try putting it into Disk Mode

If that works, you can see if the computer will recognize it when connected, either in iTunes or by the system.
NOTE: You can also try putting it into Disk Mode WHILE it is already connected to the computer.
If the iPod is recognized, you may be able to use one of the third-party methods or utilities to transfer song files from iPod to computer. You can do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer" to get some links (add "mac" to the search if your computer is a Mac).
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library, then sync it to the new iPod.

"Resurrecting" trusty G4

Hi all, I'm hoping you smart folks out there can give me some advice. I've decided to resurrect my old G4, which has been patiently waiting in its box for a new task since I got the G5 a couple years ago. It occurred to me that I can hook it up to my TV to do light surfing, download movies and watch online TV reruns from the comfort of my couch. So, I'm half way there now, and I need some direction.
Here are the basic specs of the machine (from System Profiler):
400MHz PowerPC G4 (AGP Graphics)
Video card: ATY, Rage 128Ps
OS 10.2.8
Internal HD is only 21Gigs (wow, and that was huge when I got this machine!)
Here's where I'm at. I've hooked up the TV to the graphics card via a DVI (on the computer) to HDMI (on the TV) connector. The TV can now function as the monitor for the computer. I suspect when I get the right connector for the sound that that will work as expected as well. I'm disappointed that the screen is fairly low resolution (it's an HDTV) and that it's all stretched out.
So here are my questions:
1. Can I update the OS to say, 10.4 or even 10.5? Will the 400MHz chip support that? By updating I think it will solve the problem of the tv screen looking all stretched out. I'm guessing I don't have the right driver and that 10.2 doesn't have it (as it only gives me three options and the highest res still looks bad).
2a. The HD is pretty full. My plan is to either wipe it out when/if I install a new OS or to at least uninstall much of the software and delete all the old work files. (I'm pretty sure I won't be needing Quark v4 anytime soon.)
2b. How much RAM should I have to comfortably run OS 10.5? (I'm sure I can find this out elsewhere, I'm just on a roll.)
3. Right now it's not connected to the internet at all. Would it be better to have it hardwired or wireless? (And if wireless, since I have my G5 hardwired, can I use the airport card from the G5?)

Thanks, Sig. Don't want to put too much money into this project. We'll probably go hardwired, just looking for an excuse to avoid the crawl space, lol. Of course, the DSL modem and wireless router are about as far from the living room as possible, and in the basement. My husband says his laptop wireless connection (windows-based machine) works only in certain parts of the house, a certain distance from the router. Seems like hard wiring is the least expensive, and the surest way to a reliable internet connection.

Fried hard drive. can I sync ipod to itunes and resurrect former itunes?

The hard drive on my old computer fried taking with it my itunes library. Is there a way to sync my ipod with my new computer and resurrect all of the songs in my library to itunes?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Cost to resurrect iMac DV?

i have read the suggested work-arounds to resurrect a dead iMac CRT (caused by not doing firmware upgrade prior to OS X upgrade). i'm not sure if i have the skills necessary to do this myself. has anyone had their dead iMac to a certified apple tech for this repair? if so, how much did it cost? i'm trying to decide whether this will be worth the time/effort/$.

This is relatively easy to do and should not cost agreat deal. You will need to be able to hook your computer up to an external monitor. Then you will need to install the firmware update before installing OS X.

Resurrecting split sound files

This question has been answered in various forms, but I need a little additional information.
It has been asked previously how to restore files that have been split into data and resource forks. I have been able to restore Word documents and older QT Moov files by simply changing the extension on the data file.
Since I couldn't get AppleTalk to communicate over Ethernet between OS9 and OS 10.3, I copied the info off my old PowerMac using a Zip drive, copied it to a PC, and loaded it on the thumb drive to transfer to the iBook. I know, I know, two steps more than I needed.
I have been able to re-combine data and resource forks for .wav, .snd, and .au files by simply copying both forks to a thumb drive, at which point I was able to copy the merged file back to my hard drive.
But once I copy them back, I can't find a sound format that will play, .au and .snd files won't play through Quicktime, .wav files won't play through iTunes. Any idea how to resurrect these files?
I've tried to follow the RsyncX procedures, no luck. If there's a step-by-step procedure out there to bring sound files back together and get them to play, if someone could post a link, that would be greatly appreciated.

I was able to use Audacity's "Import raw data" to bring them back to life.
A couple are indeed corrupted, not much I can do about those.
I tried opening the snd and wav files directly through Audacity, and the program automatically suggested the "import raw data" command. It took a couple tries for each to get the correct sampling rates, but the process really isn't that difficult.

Map Representation help, resurrecting Molez

I have searched the web and the forum for this, I even searched under scorched earth as that is a similar problem, but I haven't found anything.
I am resurrecting an old DOS game called molez for a class project. The problem I am having is an efficient way to represent the map. For those not familiar with Molez the map is a single screen the starts out nearly full of dirt, with a few rocks and holes in it. Your mole starts out in one of the holes and the goal is to kill the other mole(s). The dirt can be destroyed by the weapons, the rocks cannot. Molez is the grandfather to Worms however it is real time, not turn based.
I have thought of useing a 2D bit array (not sure how, maybe an array of BitSet objects).
I will have to do colision checks on the map constantly for up to four moles as well as many projectiles. Does anybody have a good idea for a data structure that would work better than the aformentioned array of BitSet's.
I don't need code, but if you know of a useful object in the API I've missed I'd appreciate it.

I don't think the Area will work, it looks like it keeps track of a Shape and the 'terrain' in my game would get broken up to much.
The terrain is very much like scorched earth, in fact I did some searching for scorched earth solutions hoping to find something that would help. The 'terrain' layout is almost the same, just imagine that instead of haveing the surface somewhere in the middle of the screen, move the surface above the screen and put the tanks in a couple of little holes below the ground. (if that makes any sense)
I think I've started on a solution, not real sure. I'm creating my own class that keeps track of a 2D collection of bits. If it works out I'll probabaly post the source here in case anybody else might find it usefull.

It just means that you want to reset it for some technical reason by holding down the lock and home button for a few seconds till it shuts downs and the apple logo pops up which then you let go. Note: nothing on your phone will be deleted.

I'm sorry no-one has answered you yet - I'm afraid I don't know the answer to the question: but I wanted to put into your mind that starting up with AppleWorks at this stage isn't a good idea. The program was 'end-of-lifed' years ago, it won't run on Lion, and some of the document types created in it - Databases in particular - cannot be opened at all by any other program whatever. Word Processing documents can be opened in Pages, and Spreadsheets in Numbers (with some reservations in both cases), but building up a collection of AppleWorks documents at this stage is going to lead to problems later on.
It's difficult to know what to recommend for a PowerPC machine that would still be compatible with modern ones. An older version of Microsoft Office, perhaps, if you can find one which will run on PPC; but most of the modern Word Processors are Intel only. This is something you would need to investigate.
