N8 - some music is "unknown"

Hi all,
Is there a way to "hard reset" the music library on the N8?  The reason I ask:
When I got the phone, I also got a 32GB microSD card and transferred my music to it (takes up ~96% of the card; it's around 4700 tracks).  No problem.  Then every once in a while, I get more music, and transfer the new tracks to the microSD card as well; also no problem.
Until the last couple of times, where the files transfer to the phone no problem, but they show up as "unknown artist" and "unknown album" on the phone, and the album art doesn't show up.  Instead of track names, the music application shows filenames.  The music does play though.
I tried "Refresh Library" a few times and each time it thinks for a while and then says "1 song added" but never adds any of them.
I don't normally use Ovi Suite to do anything with the music, but just for fun I fired that up and checked out the music library on the phone.  It shows the same thing that the phone does (which makes sense, I suppose): all of the tracks are there, but these new ones (and a few others) are "unknown."  Ovi Suite (3.0.0.282) doesn't give you the option to edit metadata, and neither does the N8.  For fun, I transferred the tracks from the phone to the computer using Ovi Suite, then opened them up in an MP3 player on the computer (MediaMonkey) and it showed all of the correct metadata.
Since almost all of the tracks show everything correctly, what I'd like to try to do is wipe out whatever internal list the phone has of the tracks so that I can do "Update Library" and see if the clean sweep picks it up.  Any hints on how to do that?  Or other ways around this?
Thanks!

Nobody responded to this but there have been other threads for other phones that seemed related.  For posterity: I resolved the problem thusly:
1) Connect phone to computer in USB Mass Storage mode (not OVI Suite).  This will make the phone do funny things, but (unlike previous models such as the N97) all of those things appear to reverse themselves.
2) Go to the G and H drives (Mass Memory and your micro SD card, if you have one) and in each go to the Private directory and delete the following three subfolders: 101ffca9, 10281e17, 10282bc4.
3) "safely eject" the phone from the computer.  For good measure, after the phone was done re-finding itself I rebooted it but that may not be necessary.  In either case, give it a minute or so to play with itself.
4) Go to your music library; it will be empty and the phone will re-scan and find the music.
That seems to have worked for me.  Hope this helps someone else ...

  • TS3212 I just purchased a new iphone 4s and I am trying to load some music from my itues. I am getting a message that says not enough space. I checked my phone and it shows i have 5.1G available. do you know how to fix this problem?

I just purchased a new iphone 4S and I'm trying to loan some music from itunes. I keep getting a message that says not enough space on my phone. I checked my phone and I have 5.1G available. I deselected all the songs on my itunes to try and get it to sync and I keep getting the same message. Any tips?

    Hey csumner1,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are receiving a "Not enough free space" alert when attempting to sync your new iPhone 4s. The following article may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
    Resolution
Try disconnecting and reconnecting your device, then syncing again to solve this issue.
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
    1. Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    2. Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    3. Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    4. Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
              - If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
    5. Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
              - Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
              - Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
              - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
              - Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    6. Restore using iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

I have forgotten my security question answers. I have never had to use them while purchasing, but I tried today, and they asked for them. So I now can't buy my music which really *****, because I am sitting in the hospital waiting room wanting to get some music, and I can't now. Is there a way I can get around that? • I have some music from CDs and recent purchases from iTunes on my iPhone 4 that are not synced with my iTunes account on my computer.  How can I sync my phone and iTunes on my computer without losing what is on my iPhone?  (original computer was stolen)

I have some music from CDs and recent purchases from iTunes on my iPhone 4 that I would like to sync with my iTunes account on my computer.  The CDs were on my original laptap also, but it was stolen and I set up the iTunes on my new computer.
When I try to sync I get a message indicating that the iPhone iTunes will be replaced with the computer iTunes.
How can I sync and retain both iTunes?

Music is designed to sync in one way only, and that is from iTunes to the phone. There is the expectation that you would backup the computer to save this data. There are 3rd party solutions to try and recover music from the phone to put back into a blank iTunes library.

  • I bought and downloaded some music off of the internet on my laptop that uses Windows 8. How can I get my music to open automatically in my itunes instead of opening in the music app?

I bought and downloaded some music off of the internet on my laptop that uses Windows 8. How can I get my music to open automatically in my itunes instead of opening in the music app (the orange sqaure with headphones)? Currently I have had to often downloads and sift through all my files to find the ones I want to open into itunes, and it's irritating.

Media is only where the user puts it.
Installing iTunes does not and has never caused media to magically appear on the computer.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer (or backup of the old computer) to the new computer.

  • Sharing Music Help! 2 Users Accounts, 2 iTunes accounts, share SOME music??

Hi - I'm new to Mac and iTunes all together (finally joined the cult... and love it!)
Anyways, My ideal setup is to have 2 User Accounts and 2 Separate iTunes Accounts so my bf and I can buy our own music, obtain separate libraries, yet share SOME music. I want to see all of MY music in the Music Library when I log in, but I still want to be able to transfer some of his music to my phone's playlist and vice versa.
Currently, our Itunes libraries are stored on each of our user profiles /users/name/music. When I log into iTunes, I see my music and [if his user account is logged on] I can see his under SHARED. But that doesn't allow me to transfer his music to my playlists and in the end, my phone.
I read Apple's how-to on pointing each of our iTunes to Users/Shared and but then whenever I'm in iTunes it would just be a huge pool of both our music and I have to weed through all of his.
Any suggestions on how we can both maintain our separate libraries/accounts but share some music (not just listen to each other's music).

In the Finder. I should have said "In the Finder, create the folder /Users/Shared/Music".
In case it wasn't clear, all of the instructions should be carried out in the Finder. iTunes should definitely not be running when you move your library and create the aliases.
    A few additional points:
    1. There's nothing significant about the folder location /Users/Shared/Music. You can substitute the name of any folder you want, provided all users will be able to read and write to it.
    2. Beware of having two or more users accessing your shared Music library *at the same time*. (Since you mentioned you want to share your music between two users on a single MacBook, I assumed only one user would access the library at a time.) This only becomes an issue if at some time in the future you share a library in this way between two computers over a networked drive. If two or more users are making simultaneous changes to the same iTunes library, they will stomp all over each other's changes, and very likely corrupt the library. Note that it's also possible to corrupt your music library if you both are simultaneously logged in on your MacBook via "Fast User Switching", and are both simultaneousy running iTunes and making changes to the library. So don't do that. (Not that you ever would.)

  • HT201272 I purchased some music on my iPod touch and want to download them to my iPad mini also but I can't get the purchased section to load at all anyone else had this problem?

Ok so I have an iPod touch 4th gen and I purchased some music on it. I also have an iPad mini and wanted to download it onto there also. Problem is that no matter how many times I try I can't get my purchased music section to load. I get the big at the top where you can select all or not on this iPad and the alphabet down the left hand side and the little loading thingy appears but nothing ever actually loads no matter how long I wait. It also sometimes just crashes the whole thing and kicks me out the app. Any suggestions? I've tried turning device on and off, it has the latest software iOS 7 and I've tried resetting all the settings already also as well as logging in and out of my Apple ID.

  • IPod classic displays 'No music' after sync, HDD problem? Geschiedenis • Verwijder  So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn't find any files on the iPod anymore. H

So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

    Hello Chance1985,
Sorry for your wait. Okay so let's try re-connecting with iTunes on your computer and syncing your device. This may give you all your stuff back. Sync in Music tab.
