N8 Sudden Decrease In Battery Life

I have had my N8 for years and have loved it every minute.  Through ^3, Anna, and Belle i've always had 2 days of battery life with average use (power saving off).  Last week however, my N8 suddenly had battery issues.  There were no app, firmware, or setting changes preceding.  So it's not anything obvious draining it.
When I charged the phone overnight (wall charger), I'd wake up in the morning and see Nokia Battery Monitor showing that the phone stopped charging prior to 100%. For example it would state: "Charged xHr yMins ago to 95%" or "98%".  Occasionally it would also show up at 100%.
With this also came a drastic sudden drop in battery life.  I would see approximatley 14-15h of life, and now I'm down to about 9-10.  When looking at NBM stats, it would say "Background" used >100% of battery life at times.  Under background would be things like Messaging, Music Player, and Notes, which is completely wrong.  See below:
Here's what ive tried so far:
1) Use AppStop to kill all background apps, no effect.
2) 7370 hard reset to clear everything and go to factory settings.  Wiped phone, mass, and card. No effect.  Used AppStop to get to bare minimums.  No effect.
3) Reinstalled Belle via Suite.  No effect.
4) Let battery drain until it shut off, then used wall charger while phone stayed off overnight. Nope
5) Let battery drain down til shut off, then used USB charging. Nothing. Repeated this hoping it would "recalibrate" battery levels.  Nothing.
Nokia Energy Profiler Stats:
Ran this for about 20 mins to get some stats:
1) Idle draw with screen on is about 0.20-0.30W, 15% CPU consumption.  Occasional spike up to 30%.
2) Idle with screen off is barely 0.02W, 3-4% CPU consuption.  Occasional spike.
3) Based on the power consumption, it still estimates that I should get 40+ hours of battery life on a full charge.
Battery lasting less than a day?  I feel like an iPhone user.  I get that I could always turn 3G off or power saving on and stretch it a bit more, but that's not a fix, it's just a Band-Aid over a bigger issue.   Anybody have ideas?  Should I buy a new battery and replace it?

Updates:  So I bought a brand new genuine BL-4D hoping it would fix the problem.  Nope, didn't happen...though the battery seems to now charge to 100%.   EIther way this leads me to believe it's not  a battery problem.  Unless there's an issue with the charging circuit, this I"m back to a consumption problem.
So I tried another belle refresh and a "Factory Settings" restore from the menu, didn't help.  Not sure what to do now, as Battery Monitor doesn't really point me to anything that's killing the battery.  So I decided to do more research with Energy Profiler and ran it for approx. 50 mins to see what the consumption deal is.
I exported the data as a .csv and cleaned up the data.  I've attached the power and current graphs.  In both graphs you see that there's very low consumption immediately after starting the measurement and locking the phone.  Afterwards, there are two distinct idle consumption values, approx 42mA (.16W) and 130mA (.49W).
An average 42mA power draw would give me approx 28.5h battery life (1200mAh/42mA=28.57h).  However an average power draw of 130mA would result in a 9.2h battery life.  The actual average of all my Current data points is approx 99.9mA, giving me 12h of battery life, which is about what I'm seeing at the moment.
I know my idle consumption is lower with 3G off and even lower with power saving on, but I haven't gotten the chance to record these measurements yet.
I'm still not sure what's causing a high idle power consumption, any ideas?

  • Will Windows 7 via Bootcamp decrease the battery life or speed when running OSX?

I know that when Windows 7 is running my battery life will decrease dramatically, but I am curious is I need to worry about battery life when running OSX, or even the speed of my notebook.
    Kyle

No need to worry, Bootcamp is a separate bootable partition and OS X isn't even running, the two operating systems have nothing to do with each other.
Now if you run Windows in OS X using virtual machine software, it's very much possible the extra CPU load could shorten the battery life as your running two operating systems at once and virtual machine software in addition to other software running.
However it's much safer, easier and more convenient than the hassles of Bootcamp and handling malware infections there, as OS X is always in control of the hardware.

  • Dracstical decrease of battery life

hi. i bought the macbook pro during last summer and i am not happy about the battery.
now it showed me only 83 % current capacity from design capacity.
what is even worse is that last two-three days my battery lasts only 2-3 hours with the same current capacity as before, so something should happen in the system.
    thanks for advices.

I would get Apple to inspect it again, maybe with a different tech or store. My 2012 13-inch non-Retina MBP is 10 months old and still shows 97 percent health in Coconut Battery.
When you talk to the techs, be sure to use the proper nomenclature so they know you are serious. Battery life is the time in years and month before the battery is no longer usable. Battery runtime is how long the computer runs on one charge.

  • Sudden overnight poor battery life

I have always thought that my Z1 compact had a great battery life. At least compared to my Galaxy S2.
With normal usage (light for me, just FB, Whatsapp and a bit of SMS and browsing) it would last 2 days and when in stamina mode its life would, according to the phones estimated battery time, last 11 days.
3 days ago i went to Germany (i live in the UK), i went to bed that night and plugged the phone in to charge using a decent quality power socket converter. The next day I noticed that it was draining its battery much faster. I'm lucky if i now get a full day through normal usage and in stamina mode i now only get 2 days.
I can't work out if this is possibly due to a damaged battery or possibly that it was the first time I had used it on a roaming network. I've been using 4.4.4 for a few months now so i know its not due to a system update, or an app update as i turned auto-update off to avoid a big bill while away.
Just from looking at a few stats and going through some menus has drained 10% in 1 hour.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thank you.

  • Iphone 4s- What is up with the fast decrease in battery life?

Is there going to be a fix to the battery life issue on the 4s?

i think it's icloud. When i updated my iOS in my iphone 4, I had the same problem. but when i turned the iCloud off and restore the phone properly it's good now.

  • After software/firmware UD, battery life decreased significantly+overheating problems

    Specs of my laptop:
    13 inch late 2011
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4gb 1333 MHz DDR3
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Hi, a month or two ago I did a software/firmware update (the thing that automatically pops up once in a while and asks if you want to update). Before the update, I was getting 7-8 hours running safari on a bright level (more than half) which was awesome!
Anyways, after I did the update, my battery life decreased significantly. If my brightness was at half, I got around 2.5 hours MAX. If I ran word and safari it wouldn't even last two hours.
Along with the horrible decrease in battery life, my laptop now gets really hot, really quickly, even if I'm only running safari on a low brightness. Sometimes the fan vibrates becuase it's working so hard...it's NEVER done that before.
I took it into the Apple store 'genius' bar, since I still have the warranty and the person that helped me offered no resolution. He told me that my battery still has life and didn't know why my laptop did this, laughed...and then dismissed me (rude). haha
    system report of the battery:
    Firmware Version:          201
      Hardware Revision:          000a
      Cell Revision:          158
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5281
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5333
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          392
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12457
I'm not sure what any of this means, but the 'genius' told me my battery still had a lot of life.
I just want the battery life back.
Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?
    Thank you

Hi, thanks for your advice. I just tried resetting and it worked momentarily (battery life improved, fan stopped making so much noise) UNTIL I put my computer to sleep and opened it again... when i first reset, battery life said 5:48. The fan was fine until I put it to sleep (closed the lid and opened five minutes later). Now it's heating up again and the fan is going crazy (making that buzzing noise), battery life is at 2:40 on same display brightness (half). I only have safari open....
Is there anything else I can try to do? Not sure why this happens after I put it to sleep. I don't want to have to reset my computer every single time I open it.
    thanks
EDIT: after posting this, not even five minutes later my battery time dropped to 2:07 and is funneling down as I type.

  • Why is the battery life dropping so fast on my iphone 4s. Just started all of a sudden today, never did it before. I already double-clicked the bottom button to see what was running and nothing was running. I checked multiple times and turned apps. off.

All of a sudden today my battery life just started dropping off on my iphone 4s. I charge it every night. I double clicked the circle button on the bottom to see what was running and there was minimal running but i turned them off anyway. I checked back in a little bit, the same, turned the couple things off again which were like phone and messages... nothing major running. Battery percentage still plummeted til it just turned off.

Are there apps on your phone right now?
I think one of your apps is causing this.
The only way to find out is to delete them all and then add them one by one to see what app maybe causing this.
Especially if you've gone thru 3 iphones already.
When you restored as new - did you sync back your stuff - apps/music or did you restore from backup?

  • Why is my mac's battery life decreased and got slower after upgrading to lion?

    Thank you for helping,
I am using MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and beginning of this summer I upgraded it from snow leopard to lion (from apple store). After installation my mac got slower,it consumes the battery very rapidly and starting time increased. I searched the reason on the net and this time I did a clean installation. I but the problem insisted. last week i updated to 10.7.5. this time i see that coloured spinning wheel even i logging in. I did all the updates and battery calibration as mentioned in apple support communities but nothing have changed. I don't use any grafic programs etc. I only use safari, firefox, iphoto, iwork and microsoft office for mac. My english and my computer knowledge is not very good. So, if you answer my problem please will you explain as much as simple.
    Thanks anyway.

    A couple of things...
...first, you might want to make certain that your internal drive is selected as the Startup Disk under System Preferences. If it's not, this can sometimes lead to a problem of your MBP 'searching' for a boot drive at startup. Second, you might want to read ds store's article - Why is my computer slow? A very handy reference guide with some good tips.
As to your decrease in battery life - that has been reported by some users as a problem with both Lion and Mountain Lion. See the "More Like This" to the right of this page.
Can't offer any real solutions - read Mr. store's article and see if you can find anything that helps. You might also want to download the free "Battery Health" from the App Store and keep an eye on your battery when you're using it.

  • BB TOUR SEVERELY DECREASED BATTERY LIFE AFTER 5.0 OS UPGRADE

I have read several other posts on this subject, but want fresh input here. Since upgrading to the 5.0 OS a couple of months ago I have noticed a big decrease in battery life. It used to last 2 days off a full charge and I do a lot of data, calling, etc. This was not a problem with the 4.7 OS. I got a replacement battery, then bought a spare battery, then got a replacement Tour last week as it is under warranty and Verizon convinced me it was the device itself.
The new Tour came with 5.0 loaded and the battery life is the same. I now am convinced it has to be the 5.0 OS, because we shouldn't have to go through all these power saving strategies that we didn't have to before the upgrade. I like some of the things that you get with the 5.0, but if a battery that doesn't last a full day is the trade off, no thanks.
Anyone know of any other fix, or is it best to downgrade back to 4.7?

I have the same problem.  I have the 8900 and just upgraded to v5.0.0.822 this week.  My battery only last a 1/2 day (from 7 am to 3 pm) when it use to last 2 days before the upgrade.
I have my screen lighting set to 10%.  This helped in the past with battery life.  The only processes running in the background are:
    Call Log
    BlackBerry Messenger
    Home Screen
    Browser
    Messages
Any solutions?  Is there any type of help desk I can call?

  • Battery life on brand new 13" retina MBP disappointing

Waited a long time to buy the Haswell retina 13" MBP with improved battery life ('9 hrs wireless web'). So far I'm only managing 5 hrs max. And all I do is browse the web and some text editing. Anyone else disappointed? Not sure if I should go have it looked at or if I just fell for another marketing spin. I imagine being told even 2 hours is still 'up to 9 hours'. Grr.

I've actually noticed this problem.  Sometimes I'll have 10-12 hours and then suddenly it'll drop to five.  I'll turn off wi-fi, bluetooth, set the brightness to two or three and close all programs, and barely see any change.
Last night I did some investigating and found that the kernal_task was eating up CPU cycles, running at 100-110% non-stop.  I restarted the machine and the kernal_task went back to normal and stayed there for a while, and my battery life showed HUGE improvements.  I think it might actually be related to the keyboard/trackpad issue others have seen because I've noticed (anecdotally) that the decrease in battery life usually follows the unresponsive spell.
I'm planning to test and document this weekend so that I can report it to Apple.  I'd suggest that you look at the Activity Monitor for the kernal_task when you're getting poor battery life and see what percentage it's running at. I suspect you'll see it's high.  When it's running normally, I get crazy good battery life.  If you find it is, take screen shots and report it to Apple.  Runaway kernal_task is not a new probelm with a new OS.  It's been reported in most of the other major releases.

  • Battery life and Heating up problems

After updating to mavericks , it seems that my macbook pro is always heated and the battery life got shorter even if I'm not using any app... anyone could help me ?

    Hello Jeskar,
    It sounds like you are seeing a decrease in battery life after upgrading to Mavericks. I would start by resetting the computers SMC, and evaluating the issue for a bit to see how that worked;
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You may also have to use the Activity monitor to see if you have any run away applications.
OS X Mavericks: About the Battery Status Menu
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5873
When one or more apps consume higher than average energy from the battery, the menu shows "Apps Using Significant Energy" with a corresponding list of those applications.
Some apps may use significant energy depending on what they are doing. This is normal. For example, if you are compressing video in iMovie, or playing a graphics-intensive game, the app may use a higher amount of energy than other apps. If you are trying to conserve battery power, quit apps listed in the significant energy section.
If you suspect that an app is appearing in the significant energy section because it is not functioning properly, try quitting and re-opening that app. If the symptom continues, open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder to troubleshoot further. The Energy tab of Activity Monitor displays the Energy Impact of each open app based on a number of factors including CPU usage, network traffic, disk activity and more. The higher the number, the more impact an app has on battery power.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • What is the Best Usage to Prolong MBA Battery Life?

    Hello,
    I have a new (1/27/2011) MacBook Air 13" (4G, 256G, 2.13Ghz CPU).
This is being written: 4/29/2011. For some time my charge indicator has not gone above 99% except very occasionally, and then, very briefly. I have noted an apparent decrease in battery 'life' (how long I can run the laptop from full charge to full discharge). Although I usually have only a browser (multiple tabs), WiFi (no Bluetooth) and, sometimes, a word processing application open with brightness at about 60%, but  I don't usually get, lately, more than 5 hours max. For example I have running since fully charged (99%) for 2:40 min with the usage pattern described above, and I now have 39% power showing.
My normal usage pattern is to charge the battery fully and then let it discharge completely. If possible, I let it rest for at least a couple of hours fully charged on the charger, and fully discharged off the charger. This is not always possible but I probably do it 40 percent of the time, at least.
"About this Mac" (More Info) shows 66 cycles and Full Charge capacity as 6354 mAh and a capacity of 94%. CocoBattery 2.7 shows 66 cycle and 6352mAh, and age of the Mac as 19 weeks.
I feel that this decrease in ability to hold a charge is excessive compared to what Apple indicates is normal (80% loss in 2 years or 300 cycles). At this rate I will be at 80% of original capacity in 9 months, and 80% of capacity in about 200 cycles.
I have read several of the excellent posts on this forum as well as the Apple info on batteries, battery cycles, and laptop batteries referenced here, but still am confused as the best way to proceed in order to prolong battery life.
Would changing my usage pattern extend the working life of my MBA? Specifically (but not exclusively), would I be better off running on the charger more often, even if I were unable to fully charge or discharge the battery each time? As I understand it doing this will decrease my cycle count per unit of time, but it will also mean that I more frequently begin charging (or discharging) before current capacity (no pun intended) has reached maximum (or minimum).
If the battery were more easily replaced, I would be less concerned (though not happy ) for, otherwise, I am truly pleased with this elegant and generally capable computer.
Any information anyone can provide would be very much appreciated.
    Pete

    hi,
so what would you suggest to do here then. let it get to 50% then run the battery down and at say 5-%ish re-charge it fully.
is there anything i could switch off on my phone to save battery power. ive taken off he location services apart from ym locate my iphone, stopped the fetch new data and set it to manaul . this is also the same for the icloud as well.more or less everything has been set to manual or set to off ??

  • Battery life drops after Mountain Lion and then hard drive crashes. Coincidence?

On October 20, I purchased and downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2009 MacBook Pro. I soon began seeing a decrease in battery life. When hovering over the battery icon to check the time left, I noticed it said "Service Battery". The notebook otherwise seemed to operate normally. I should also note that I've never had any other problems with this MacBook Pro. By November 18, without any other problems, the hard drive crashed and was irreparable, costing me over $200 for replacement. This should not be a part that needs replacement on a 3 year old computer. Coincidence that these events happened so close in sequence, I think not. If the battery problems are known to Apple through the discussions on the Support Communities, why hasn't Apple issued a patch 4 months after the release of Mountain Lion? The new hard drive was installed running Snow Leopard and I intend to keep that OS. It's really a shame because ML has some nice features that SL does not offer. I also will not be purchasing any new Apple OS until the program has been out at least a year to allow Apple to work out the known, potentially costly problems that they seem to knowingly ignore. I'm a loyal Apple customer but this incident will have me thinking twice before running out to purchase any of their products and software immediately upon release or even a few months after.

Have you followed these instructions, specifically formatting your new HDD?
