N8 widget vs.. Application

Hi All,
Just got the phone and love it.  I get the application vs. widget thing, but still have a few questions.
Can you add an application to a home screen WITHOUT the shortcut widget?  I love the TopApps widget which came loaded with the phone.  However, it's only available as an app on the Ovi Store.  Does that mean: 1) I can't find it as a widget.  2) There's a way to load Apps as Widgets? 3) Is it an RSS feed in which case does anyone know where the feed is?
How do you know if an item on the Ovi Store is a Widget or App?  One would think there would be a section of the store for each.
Finally, is it possible to move a widget from one home screen to another with removing and readding.
Thanks...

FYI...this worked from Nokia support!!!'
We are always pleased to be of assistance to all of our customers. In response to your inquiry about widgets, if I may verify, is the catalogue that you are referring is when you want to edit the Homescreen? If yes, for you to have the topApps on the widget catalogue, please uninstall it first then reinstall again. Please follow the steps provided below:
1. Press the Menu button.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Then Application manager.
4. Look for TopApps.
5. Touch and hold the said application then remove or uninstall.
Reinstall again the said application. Once it was installed, press options on your homescreen and check if topApps is now on the widgets catalogue.

  • How can I use widgets as applications OUT OF DAHBOARD ?

    Hello dear friends,
How can I do to use Widgets as applications *OUT of Dashboard* ?
I know there is a way, and I've noticed TinkerTool can do it, but how to proceed ?
I think I should ask them directly, but I didn't for the moment,
and I'd rather prefer to proceed with an Apple solution

Does anybody have the solution ?
    Thank you for responding

  • Widget-small application: A timer

    Hello,
I was somehow disappointed not to find any timer or countdown clock on my nokia 5800. But maybe there is such things to download and to install as a application. Any advices, help, suggestion ? Thanks

Have you tried looking through Ovi store? https://store.ovi.com/
Search countdown or timer. There's a few results.

  • Time tracking widget/ application??

Hi...I am looking for a time tracking widget or application. I work in a manner similar to an attorney where I track billable hours by assignment. I am not looking for an app that I have to click a timer. Just one to simply enter a date, short description and hours worked. I am looking for a stand alone app that is NOT tied to some online service. Any ideas??

You might want to look at Mac time tracking application OfficeTime (http://www.officetime.net). It has overwhelmingly positive comments on VersionTracker and MacUpdate.

  • How to get a list of every application on my computer?

I'm trying to figure out how to get a list of every application on my computer using applescript. I know it is possible for the system to do this, as evidenced by the dialog you get when you use the "choose application" function. Other examples are doing a spotlight search for "kind:app" or programs like Namely or QuickSilver.
Is there a way to do this in applescript? The only solution I've come up with so far is to use the command:
<pre>set everyapplicationaliases to choose application as alias with multiple selections allowed</pre>
and manually select all on the resulting dialog. I can then take the results and go from there, however there are a few significant problems with this approach.
    1. It requires user interaction. (I have an idea for some future applications that could use this functionality if it can be done without user input.)
    2. It's horribly slow. As a test run I choose all the applications from the dialog, extracted some basic info and put the result on the clipboard. It took a couple of minutes to complete this relatively basic task. In comparison, running the aforementioned spotlight search took maybe ten seconds.
    Thanks in advance!
    best,
    peter

For these specific queries my results are...
set appList to paragraphs of (do shell script "mdfind \"(kMDItemKind = 'application'c) || (kMDItemKind = 'widget'c)\"")
    3082
    set appList to paragraphs of (do shell script "mdfind \"(kMDItemKind = 'Application'c) || (kMDItemKind = 'Widget'c) ||
    ((kMDItemContentTypeTree = 'com.apple.application') && (kMDItemContentType != com.apple.mail.emlx) && (kMDItemContentType != public.vcard))\"")
    3115
I think I finally found some numbers that make sense!
When I search for Kind:Application by the Command+F method in the Finder, I get a total of 2521 items, of which 2477 are "Applications" and 44 are "Other".
(Just by eyeballing it, "Other" seems to include some Classic Apps and some .bundle files.)
The total # found by this method (2521) plus the number of Widgets found using mdfind (318) equals the number of total number of items found by spotlight (2839).
I also noticed that these numbers almost equal the spotlight number:
    mdfind results for kMDItemKind:
    Widgets: 318
    Applications: 1684
    Classic*: 795
    and
    Command+F "Other" items: 44
    3181684+79544 = 2841
It may be a fluke that this is so close to the 2839 spotlight gives, or maybe there's an overlap somewhere...
Tying this back into my initial question, it seems like the original mdfind command for Applications is probably the best answer for what I was looking for,
since I wasn't really thinking about Classic apps and Widgets anyway.

  • Widget creation on Flex builder and related problems - need some help

    Hi all.
I am trying to create a widget like application and it seems
I have made a mistake. As you know, desktop widgets are like small
stickers, they do not appear on taskbar and can be hidden or
    docked.
The problem is that I created an AIR application using Flex
Builder 3 Beta and now I cannot find how to make that application
behave like custom-shaped window. My app appears on Windows taskbar
and I don't want it. When I drag the window (which is a custom
shape) it shows that nasty dragging rectangle around it.
As far as I found out (and tried it) I need to use cod like:
    var initOptions:NativeWindowInitOptions = new
    NativeWindowInitOptions();
    initOptions.systemChrome = NativeWindowSystemChrome.NONE;
    initOptions.type = NativeWindowType.UTILITY;
to hide my window from the taskbar. But it seems I cannot use
such a code for class mx:Application. Or can I (would be grateful
    for some idea)?
    The main question is:
if I want to migrate my app to that NativeWindow based
solution - then NativeWindow is not an mx class and I cannot find
how I will use Flex Builder Design mode to arrange my GUI elements.
Is it somehow possible to wrap my mx:Application inside
NativeWindow and do not have to migrate the design from mxml files
    to pure ActionScript?
The second issue - if I want to use some kind of subforms -
like widget settings window - when I move that window with the
mouse, it is being clipped to the region of my Application. Does
that again mean that I need to use NativeWindow for creating such a
    "Widget settings" dialog window?
Thanks for any ideas (and especially for useful links and

After installation or when clicking the appliication in the start menu, it should start and display a tray icon. No tray icon is displayed and I don't think it's even running at all.
I am running Java Version 1.6.0_13, Windows XP Pro SP3, Yahoo Widgets 4.5.2
The following lines are saved to the log when attempting to start the Widget Foundation.

    Hi Olivier,
When you tried to install SAP Widget Foundation as standalone application following SAP Widget Foundation User's Guide - [https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/20e64a36-6f34-2a10-0bbb-aeac6101b93c], did you get the installation result saying "SAP Widget Foundation installed successfully"?
If you got the success message, then try this:
Actually when you go to Start Menu -> Programs->SAP Widget Foundation and click there, a Batch file starts to run, which inturn displays the icon on the tray.
What you could do is, Go to the location where you have installed the SAP Widget Foundation, usually C:ProgramFilesSAP Widget Foundaiton and double click on the "run.bat" file. This may work.
If you did not get the success message, then there would have been some problem during installation, you could uninstall and re install it again.
Let me know if this works.
    Regards,
    Shilpa B.V

  • Dashboard (Widget) turning ON/OFF automatically...Please Help!!

    Everything was working fine yesterday...
I don't know if these two events are related, but today when I turned ON my computer and tried logging online I saw that Comcast had turned OFF my Internet Connection because of a late payment. Moments latter, after I made the payment and got my internet re-connected again this started happening...
I logged online and for a minute or so it was fine, then all of a sudden there was a weird brief moment were I did not have any control over my computer... I thought something was being installed without my consent. So I tried logging OFF but the computer was Frozen, So I Shut down the computer manually using the ON/OFF button on my Display.... I don't remember exactly all the details of what else I did, but a few minutes latter I turned my computer back ON...
My (Widget) dashboard window and the Volume Indicator started turning ON/OFF automatically. And now it's happening every few minutes and I can't control it.
If I'm on my Desktop screen the Finder Window pops open prompting me: "you can not use the name that begins with Dot." The Keyboard keys Freeze and I have to randomly hit a bunch of keys or shut the computer down to use it again. As I was typing this email it would interrupt it and add one of these numbers (.0 or 3) to were ever the cursor was currently at. The mouse seams to work OK, but sometimes it freezes too.
And, If I'm online the browser would freeze whenever the Widget application automatically started turning ON/OFF on the screen.
Here are things I tried that I thought would fix it:
    1. I trashed the widget preferences from my User/Library.
    2. I trashed the widgets I thought were causing the problem.
    3. After the above did not work, I trashed the Dashboard Widget Application thinking it would be Deleted out of my computer. Unfortunately that did not fix the problem... I found out that the Widget dashboard Application is still somewhere in the sub layer of the system.
I don't know what is going on and need some help here...
So, can anyone Please help me out.. any Step by Step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

    Power Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    Power Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi Frank, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First thing I'd do is Run Repair Disk from your Tiger DVD or discs that shipped with your Mac.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
Next, I'd try to repair this with 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Using widgets on the desktop

Some large display iMac users may want to use Dashboard widgets on the desktop. There are commercial applications to do this, but for a new, free app, WidgetRunner is worth a look. It allows you to specify whether each widget should float on top, act like a normal window, or be pinned to the desktop:

  • GMail Notifier & GMail widgets not working

    Hey there...
For some strange reason neither of my GMail notifier or GMail widget works on my 20" iMac Core Duo. And yes they DID work yesterday. Hmmm... I have repaired disk permissions, AppZapped GMail notifier and reinstalled (same with the widget), and they still wont work!
The notifier won't show new mail, and the widget just keeps flashing the gmail logo as if it is still trying to access gmail to see if i have new mail.
Could it possible be a blocked port or something?
    Cheers in advance.

You are not alone and it is not the fault of your new toy!
We are all having this problem - Google has been aware of the problem for atleast a week and is supposedly working on a fix.
You'll notice the issue can be reproduced in google widgets, the application GmailStatus and all the other 3rd party programs one can use to check their Gmail - It's not you - It's them : - )

  • KDE Konfusion: 1 panel needed to be recreated; toolbox non-responsive

I've been using Arch for about 2 minutes and KDE for about 2 seconds.
I should say that I'm not confident I understand KDE's terminology yet and the more I read, the more confused I get. I'm somewhat frustrated by KDE's built-in help because it seems only to explain the easy things and never the difficult or detailed ones!
So I configured my desktop (I think it is a desktop - or is it a "containment" or "plasmoid"?) as follows:
    - 1 panel at top left of screen containing three different launchers (menu, kickoff, lancelot) so I can try them out, knowledge base widget, various application launchers
    - 1 panel at top on right of screen just to left of the desktop toolbox (not sure this is the word - it has a cashew and sometimes the word "desktop" and cannot be moved or altered as far as I can tell) containing other widgets including the system tray, notifications, monitors, clock, navigational stuff (activities, dashboard, show desktop, pager) etc.
This seemed to work fine until I started up today. The right panel continued to work fine. The left panel responded only to right-clicks. Left-clicking on the leftmost widget changed virtual desktop. Left-clicking on others either did nothing or also changed to the same virtual desktop. The desktop toolbox was entirely unresponsive initially although it now seems to also take me back to the same virtual desktop if I click on it.
    Rebooting did not help.
I removed the left panel, added it again and reconfigured it. That now seems to be working - at least for now.
The desktop toolbox remains unresponsive and I cannot, as far as I know, remove and replace this. I have tried various somewhat random configuration changes but nothing seems to have any effect whatsoever.  Right now, left-click on the cashew takes me to the same virtual desktop. Right-click is just like right-click anywhere else on the desktop.
One thing I've noticed is that the word "desktop" no longer shows up all the time. Also it no longer looks as 3d as it did before. It used to be slightly deeper than my configured panels but now it looks more like just another very small mini panel (which doesn't do much).
When I shutdown last night, plasma crashed. This seems to occur more frequently than I like (ever since I installed Arch - before I'd made anything really by way of changes to KDE). Every time, it takes me through a process of requesting and gathering bug info and then announces that there's not enough so it isn't worth sending a report to the developers. I don't know if this latest crash is connected to what I'm seeing or not.
I am not sure what the difference between the "Desktop" and "Desktop Icons" activities are but "Desktop" seems to be the default one and I think I'm just staying in that activity. (I did try switching just to see if it made any difference but it didn't help.) I mention this only because I'm not really clear what activities are and so I'm not sure whether it might be important or not.
I realise this sounds very confused. That's the result of spending the entire day trying to figure out what is going on with man pages (are there such things for KDE?), help centre, google, arch's forum/wiki search and random trial-and-error. I mention this only because I suspect it will look as though I haven't bothered trying to find the answer which I'm sure must be obvious really. (I'm sure there was a simpler way of rejuvenating my left panel than removing it and making another, as well!)
Any pointer would be extremely welcome.

Thanks. ihatethecashew sounds great. RIght now, KDE has randomly decided to not let me install further widgets so although it is built I cannot use it. But I expect it will randomly decide otherwise at some point.
On reboot today, my left panel was again not usable. So I decided to remove it again and add everything to the right panel. Maybe having more than one is a problem?
I appreciate the link, too. I think I've found parts of that site when googling for things but not the introductory page which you linked to.
Also, just after I installed ihatethecashew, the toolbox cashew randomly responded again although it has now refrozen.
I'm pretty sure there's some logic to this - I just haven't a clue what it is yet!

  • Cannot create file when trying to download

Have an early 2006 iMac 17 inch with Intel chip running OSX 10-47 using Safari
Quite suddenly, when I try to download anything (widgets, any applications etc) I now get the error message "Cannot create file" and am unable to download.

    Chris
Intel chip iMac 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Early 2006 iMac

It still sounds like you are trying to download to a
folder with insufficient permissions to allow you to
    create files.
Try creating a new folder on your Desktop, say
Downloads for example, and change the Safari
preferences so that this is the download location.
Now when you try to download, does it still fail?
If it does fail, try using Safari in another user
    account.
This will help us to know whether your problem is
local to your account or system wide. If you don't
have another account you can use System Preferences
    -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to
    remove it if needed)
OK I followed the suggestion and created a new folder for downloads in my own home directory as suggested and lo and behold, I can now download again!
    Thanks!
However, how did I suddenly lose permission to download to my desktop?

  • N97 access point options

Is it possible to set my n97 so that whenever it is in the range of my home wireless network it uses that for access instead of 3G network?  e.g. for when it checks email or uses facebook etc?  I was reading about the access groups in the manual but it didn't seem to want to do what I was trying to achieve.

you need to ensure that each of the widgets or applications are set to use "internet" group as the means of connection, if this is the group where you have set all your access points.
I have a further question petrib in relation the Messaging built in application.  I have managed to get MfE working and it correctly uses the "Internet" group to access packet data, and correctly switches between my wifi and 3G conections.  Excellent!
BUT in default messaging where I have added my gmail account there is no option to select "Internet" under Access Point in Use.  The only available options are "Default connection", my home wifi name or my 3G internet connection.  If I select default connection, then my gmail account will only try to connect to wifi and not switch to 3G when out of range.
Why can't I select the Internet group for my default email account but I can for my MfE account? grrrrrr

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Assuming that AirPort Utility for Windows is sufficiently similar to the version for Mac, launch that program, enter "manual setup" mode for your AirPort Extreme, select the "Advanced" pane, then click on the "Logs and Statistics" button. In the resulting window you can see "Wireless Clients" under that tab and "DHCP Clients" under that tab. The "DHCP Clients" list may not show computers that are using a static IP address.

  • N8 Tries to connect to net all the time

I've tried everything. I have even deleted the access points in Destinations for all my Celullar data.
This is what I have done (step by step).
Issue - Trying to totally kill Cellular Data connection
    Steps taken
    1. Switch network to GSM only mode (EDGE will still be available apparently - Whay is that?)
    2. Went to Connectivity settings and changed the data usage in Home Netwrok to "WLAN Only"
The double arrow is now gone (no data connection) but I am now getting this error message (as if it's trying to cycle through all the available operators access points settings such as internet, WAP, MMS and Streaming) and since I only allowed WLAN, can't find anything so getting this Connection Failed, Acess Denied box near the Signal bars
So I figured that some widgets or application is trying to access the net.
    Steps taken
    1. Removed ALL Widgets except the shortcuts and things that I know does not need the net.
Still not working, still getting the Connection error ...
    Steps taken
    1. Removed the GMail mailbox since there is no option for Manual retrieval for Gmail (what the heck is up with that?)
Still not working - Still getting the error.
    Steps taken
    1. Rebooted the device and saw that Whatsapp is running automatically from restart. Checked the settings. Yeap, it's setup to look for Cellular Signal. Changed that to Wifi.
Still getting the damn error!!! Maybe need to restart the N8
Now waiting if I am still getting the error .......
Any other apps that I should look into? I've only downloaded like 15 apps since I bought this.
I get a strange feeling that with all this issues I have, I now see the wisdom in Apple Review Process for their App Store. All sort of cow dung is in the Ovi Store and it's causing all sort of grief to the end user.
The pendulum is swinging so far to my iPhone it's not even funny.
EDIT: Just as I post this message, I get the error message again .... seriously Nokia? Come ON!!!! Give me a toggle button to kill Cellular Data and make sure that once that is off, I don't get all sorts of error message.

WhatsApp tries to connect to the internet constantly, no matter what you do.
I had it installed and it was doing the same thing, it didn't stop until i uninstalled it. There are other Apps that do this too, but I don't know what they are.
It's not the phones fault that you downloaded an App that requires the internet, and its not Nokia's fault the App requires the internet.
