N81 "possessed"

All,
I'm trying to solve a weird problem that started to happen with my 3 months old N81 phone.
Last Thursday out of the blue, my # keys and navigator on my N81 stopped responding. I left the phone on and then my screen started act on "invisible" key strokes randomly like the phone is "possessed". Turning on and off the phone and removing the battery multiple times did not help. After several hours it just stopped acting weird, it was working fine. So, then I turned BT off. Phone was working fine until Sunday, when it did it again briefly. At that time I just recharged the phone and it was back OK. Now this morning it happend again when I was trying to make a call. I was able turn to phone off, but I can't log in, because I can't enter my pin# since the keys do not work.
Do I have a virus in my phone or is something else going on with it? Any one any ideas or advise??
Thanks for all your help, Jari

Ummm, but how about this statement?
I basically agree that Symbian 9.x is extremely secure. However I think it is dangerous to make statements like "... And there's not a single instance of a virus. Not one. because the OS makes such existence impossible." There is no such thing as impossible and you should never say never.
I can think of several methods malware could be introduced on OS 9.x based platform. Although all of them are quite unlikely, but if there was an actual virus outbreak I think the threat might be a bit more serious than outlined in this article. Here's why:
1) Your average user does not pay attention to various warnings shown by the operating system. What is worse, all the numerous warning and information dialogs Symbian requires even legitimate applications show, have got people used to pressing "yes". (Windows Vista is nearly as bad in this extent.)
2) Sure, even if the device is infected, "a working device is only a hard reset or card format away". Only?!? For many of us, having your device hard reset is not simply a minor inconvenience. Of course you can disinfect a compromised PC too by format and reinstall, but what about all the data that gets lost in the process?
3) If the malware takes advantage of a vulnerability in the OS, the only way to solve the problem for real is to do a firmware upgrade. Even though the vendors have set up sites where end users may update the firmware by themselves, how many of them actually does that? There are a LOT of people out there who don't even know they are using a Symbian based mobile phone, let alone that there would be a site to do firmware upgrades.
Feel free to hit the KUDOS button if you think I deserved it.........

  • At a loss. Wiring a possessed house I think! Input needed

    Need some help.
I know and have done a lot of networking No pro, but self taught. Did run Ethernet of my whole house (ex wife's house now ) pre wifi days. Running wires, using switches and routers. All worked. Have down a ton of wifi - all Apple gear for myself in my location, friends and family. Good to go. I currently run a bunch in my home for iPhones, computers, netflix, itunes server, Air Video for all devices. Flawless.
So I'm not a dummy at least. So……
To my dads house. My on going project for a year. Great house. Big. Hand built back in the '50's. All plaster. Well made.
1- His office - cable modem to Airport Extreme - named BASE. Across this room, one Airport express (all AX are older g units) for the stereo from computer.
Now when I try to extend this network only for him to use his iPhone with Apple Remote to control music, I have now bought 5 Airport Expresses - the signal will not carry for more than 10 feet at best in this house (it's possessed I swear). NOT KIDDING.
I put an Express 10 feet from the office to a kitchen, why because any further I get no signal connection.
From this Express another one 10 feet for a den.
But the signal is so weak it doesn't work.
The house is plaster - I guess very well plastered and who knows what metal lathering is behind the plaster? It's a ranch.
What could possibly abort wifi signal like this. Oh, I might add, no iPhones work in the house either. We're in NY.Long Island. Major ATT signal. Nada in house. Go outside no problem.
So I'm going to tackle this again this weekend. Start from scratch. Any insight? I'm asking because I'm at a loss and think I'M NUTS! LOL
What would make wifi not carry for any distance? Lot's of windows in the house too.
I'm on the verge of telling him to have cable run another wire and modem to the other side of the house.
I'm stumped. I was going to post a few times but can't imagine why I can't get this working. Feel like a dunce.
Right now he tells me it's no connection in the den. The last AX extender not 10 feet from him.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to metal, water also will cause significant reduction in signal. The higher the frequency, the worse the problem. (One of the reasons why in the past submarines needed to surface to use their radios.) Perhaps the plaster or wood is exceptionally wet or the particular plaster they used has a high metal content. You may want to try using only 2.4GHz instead of 5HGz because lower frequencies penetrate walls better. I'm grasping for straws, but I'm not sure what else you could try short of tearing down walls.
I will tell a story of one wiring job I did. My boss gave a quote and approval sight unseen. He normally didn't do this but due to various circumstances and time constraints, he took a gamble. The job was to install a DSL modem and wireless router for a doctor's office. The modem and router were in the managers office. The reception area in the next room would have two workstations about 15 feet away, connected wirelessly. The doctor's office would get one laptop connected wirelessly, about 100 feet at the other end of the building. The building was all wood construction so no one foresaw what happened next. The manager's computer was fine since it was wired. One of the wireless reception workstations was fine with full signal strength since it was a line of sight through an open doorway to the router. The other reception workstation was working but only had 50% signal strength. (Not line of sight to the router.) The doctor's laptop had zero bars. I moved the laptop next to the router and got 100% signal strength. I walked the laptop next to the workstation with line-of-sight, and still got 100%. I walked to the other reception workstation and got 50%, same as the workstation. I walked out of the reception area turned left and started to walk down the hallway to the doctor's office. I took no more than 5 steps and got zero bars! I walked back a few steps and the meter jumped to 50%. I had to do this a few times to fully convince myself. It was only a chance conversation I had with one of the nurses who recalled that the former occupant of the office was a dentist. So we surmised that the room that the router was in might have had the x-ray machine, so they would have lined the walls with lead or whatever. In any case, we ended up having to pull wires. But we learned that regardless of what it looks like on the outside... But this does sound quite similar to your experience.
There's also the time that my coworkers found that the whole wall was 1/4" steel plate. The walls were covered with drywall so we didn't know it was there until we ruined a half dozen drill bits. It seemed like it was armor plate steel. We think the building used to be a indoor gun range or something. And there was the time that we encountered hardened concrete walls at an office using a former military building. Fortunately neither of those had Wi-Fi but we likely would have had signal problems in both cases. It taught us that we can't assume and needed to do a thorough inspection ahead of time.
So while I don't think the house is possessed, I do suspect that the original builder used some funky local material. Maybe he was a conspiracy theorist and has tinfoil in all the walls.

  • Is there a way of finding out what has been accessed on my MacBook Pro whilst in the possession of an apple authorised service centre?

    Hi Guys,
I'm a bit new to this discussion group thing although I've been using Macintosh computers for many years (showing my age).
I handed my MacBook Pro to be repaired at an authorised apple service centre. When I handed it in they said they needed to keep hold of it to run some diagnostics and requested my password. I've owned various models of mac for the the past 17 years and this is the first hardware problem I have encountered, hence I have never bothered to set up user accounts.
As I live in quite a remote part of Sweden I am paranoid that some untrusted technician is going to make a copy of my music (11,000 tracks) or share some of my personal information (scanned copies of my birth certificate, passport, certificates, photos, etc.) on the web. Is there a way of finding out what activity has taken place whilst they've had it in their possession?
I appreciate any advice you guys can offer.
    Thanks!
PS: I've already thought about the 'recently opened' menu and The machine in question is a MacBook Pro 17" (2011) running OS X 10.6.8 (need Rosetta).

I am paranoid that some untrusted technician is going to make a copy of my music (11,000 tracks) or share some of my personal information (scanned copies of my birth certificate, passport, certificates, photos, etc.) on the web.
If you put your info into the computer and hand it to another, you have to assume they will copy everything.
Why are you putting scanned copies of valuable identity information into a computer than can be hacked, stolen, lost or compromised by a dirty tech?
    Have you lost your mind?
Is there a way of finding out what activity has taken place whilst they've had it in their possession?
No. The tech would just deny it if he did, or tell the truth which the answer would be "NO" in either case.
The employer won't ask that sort of questions without solid proof, less they make a enemy of the employee and/or risk being sued for defamation of character.
It's not like they bother to have a team of people watching over his shoulder that he doesn't stick a USB thumb drive of your data into his pocket to take home.
I am paranoid that some untrusted technician is going to make a copy of my music (11,000 tracks)
If it's iTunes music, it has your personal ID embedded into the song files. Most IT techs know this though.
I appreciate any advice you guys can offer.
Too late now, all you can do is not worry about it.
Take your personal info out of the machine and if you need it, burn cd/dvd copies, a few USB thumb drives, Iron Keys or self encrypting external storage drives with key and/or keypad.

  • Can not open Web from Nokia N81

    Hi
My Nokia N81 worked fine until today
I just connected it to PC Suite and made a synchronization - now I have folowing problem - I can not open web-browser any more.
When I go into menu and then try to open Icon web - screens becames blue (desctopimage) for a second and then I'm landing again in menu just as it was before click on icon
What can be the reason of this problem?
Similar happened also with N-Gage Icon. I've tried it with memory card and without it - the result is the same - I can not go into web-section of my Nokia

    Hi,
It seems that some faults has occurred during
the synchronization. You should re-set your
internet settings. If the issue persists your
    phone will need reformat.
    Regards.

  • HOWTOs to setup VoIP don't work on my N81

    Hello,
I have a Nokia N81 and I want to setup SIP on it, using my VoipBuster account.
I've successfully configured this account a thousand times on different systems, but it seems impossible to get it to work with my Nokia phone, even after following the HOWTOs everybody reported to work with their phones:
    http://www.poromenos.org/node/74
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/751303.html
I am 200% sure that I've entered the details correctly and added the relevant profile in "Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Internet Tel.", but when I go to "Tools -> Connectivity -> Internet Tel.", select my home network and try to connect, I get this error message: "Unable to connect to the connection network". And if I try to call a number via "Internet call", I get "Internet telephone service not available".
What may be going wrong? Does this /smartphone/ store error logs like operating systems do (they may help to find the problem)?
The other weird thing I've noticed is that the phone *always* overrides "Transport Type" to "Auto" in both the proxy and registrar sections. I've tried many times to set it to UDP, but it always sets it to "Auto".
Just in case: I can use this account with the software I have installed on my computer (from the same network) and my Nokia phone has no problem to access the Internet via my home network.
    Thanks in advance.

i have model A1458...been acting possessed.... apps opening and closing on their own...zooming in and out... not always responsive to my touch... what could be the problem?

The two most likely culprits would be a faulty cable/charging block or a bad digitizer. Try charging the device with a different charger and cable. If the problem goes away, then the problem is with your charger. If it does not, try the basics of resetting, restoriing from back up, restoring as new. If you still have the problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store for evaluation.

I have recently purchased a new lap top. Both my wife and I share our Itune music. When I purchesed the computer I was able to authorize my itunes account on it and move my purchaced music over from my iphone. However, I was not able to move my wifes music over because she has too many devices authorized under her account. Most of those computers are no longer in our possession and have been thrown out. How can she deauthorzise computer we don't have in our possession anymore without deauthorizing them all?

Authorizing deauthorizing has NO effect at all on your itunes library.  You lose nothing.
You should also alwasy have a backup copy.
    You MUST deauthorize all.
You have the only answer there is.

  • XPLITE ON ASUS EEE WONT INSTALL N81 DRIVERS

I have been trying to set up my wifes n81 to act a modem for her asus eee. The asus eee is running on xplite(condensed windows xp.)When the phone is connected to the asus by usb cable it recognises it and seems to be trying to download drivers but eventually a ballon comes up saying that drivers could not be installed. I am assuming that the relevant "software" to download these drivers has been cropped for the xplite. Can anyone tell me how to add this missing feature or where to go from here. I have managed to pair the n81 as a modem with my laptop running full Vista and so a guess xplite is short of something. Thanks in advance. Jim

You don't need to install anything, ath9k has been part of the kernel for a loooooong time. Rather than trying to install random drivers, you should diagnose why wireless doesn't work out of the box. The first place to look is dmesg, so after you try to connect, run dmesg and then post here it's output.

  • Macbook purchased in June acting possessed, not sure what else I can do.

    SPECS:  MacBook Pro, 2.5GHz Intel Core i5  4gb 1600MHx DDR3 RAM, 500gb HDD running OS X 10.9.4
Okay, so my family purchased me a new MacBook back in June, after my other one died after nearly 5 years. Right out of the box I had problems with it. When I first booted it up, it froze and crashed. After I finally was able to reboot it and get it up and running, it was extremely slow and would constantly freeze. I immediately contacted Apple Support. Unfortunately, I was stuck home after knee surgery and couldn't get it to the store, so they remotely checked my computer out and deemed it was "fine". Okay. They informed me about the warranty, yadda yadda.
So the problems continued, I re-contacted them and they instructed me to take it in for service as soon as I could. I had to wait a bit for my knee to heal up before I could get myself over to the mall. I went, they ran some tests and also declared everything was fine. By this point, my computer was routinely crashing, failing to start up properly, and started just doing.. strange things. They recommended I back all my photos up to an external HD (which I did), bring it back another time and have them completely wipe and reset it. Did that about 3-4 weeks ago.
I've essentially left everything alone besides putting some of my photos back on from the external HD. Not long after they reset it, it's back to doing all sorts of crazy things. I haven't even been able to use this thing besides being a thousand dollar Facebook and email machine.... try and do anything else and it crashes or freezes. I can't even use iPhoto to edit photos because it immediately locks up and I sit there for 5 minutes per photo watching the dang pinwheel go round and round. Now the computer overheats and the mousepad has become possessed. I've started recording some of the bizarre things it does, and showed them at the Apple store and just get a "hmmm..." from them... I can be sitting here watching Netflix and besides barely loading half the time, the mouse just spazzes out and goes all over the screen clicking on things. Trying to type this out is already a nightmare because the mouse just shoots all over the place, clicks on things, highlights things, erases things and goes over to the other dashboard screen... so I'm constantly having to sit here clicking ESC to come back to where I was. The brightness will change from time to time too, and the plugging in/unpluging the power adapter instantly sends the computer into a frenzy (yes, I am using the charger that came with the computer, and it is plugged into a surge protector). When I try to regain control of the mouse, it still shoots all over the place and clicks on things.
I don't know what to do. I've deleted everything, reset everything, put on a firewall, etc. I tried to boot in Safe Mode and it won't work. The computer has a mind of its own. I think there has got to be some sort of problem with the logic board, I don't know what else it could be. I find myself having to hold down the power button to shut it down because it absolutely refuses to shut down if I click on the shut down option on screen.. it pretty much just tells me NOPE.
Please help. The Apple Store/Support said there is nothing more they can do for me because my family apparently purchased it through Best Buy, so they said they don't cover things bought through 3rd party. I wasn't aware of it and not sure if I should try going through Best Buy? I am on the other side of the state from my family now, and none of them are particularly gifted with computers, so not sure if how I would get the receipt from them if that's what I need for Besy Buy, or do I just go there ? I've never dealt with Besy Buy before, but can only imagine how awful that's going to be....
    Thanks so much.

Thank you for your reply. I figured I had the one year Apple care warranty regardless, but when I expressed wanting the laptop to be replaced since it seemed defective out of the box, they told me it was pretty much my problem to go deal with Best Buy and do an exchange through them. My last MacBook really had no major issues until it died after 5 years.. very disappointed in how Apple has been handling it this time around. I have another Genius Bar appointment for this Thursday, I guess I will try yet again to see if they can make this right.

  • It's like my computer is possessed

Today has been a day of whirling beachballs!!!
I've done two things in the last two days that might have some bearing on my current problems. First, I added four Maxtor OneTouch 4Plus External Hard drives. Some program on the Maxtor keeps trying to sync the drives. I've thrown away every Maxtor ap I can find and it still pops up on restart and I've had to restart a ton of times today!!
The other thing I did is run software update yesterday. I think it included QuickTime 7.4.1, Safari 3.1 and a security update.
Anyway, now my OS is possessed. The problems I've had today are almost too numerous to mention! Early yesterday I tried downloading the MacBook Air tour video. 184Mb. It downloaded fine but got about 90% of the way through unzipping the file and locked up. Then Safari, the Finder and iTunes followed. Nothing would force quit either. I finally just held down the power button. A little later, while trying to work on my website Safari quit again and again it seems like half my other programs followed. After being forced to do the power button hard shutdown again I restarted. After working again for a short while the Spotlight and Find functions both quit. I couldn't search anything. Photoshop started taking seven or eight minutes to save a file!! After restarting again, all the apps, folders and stationary pads I keep in my finder window all disappeared. Later Final Cut Pro locked up (actually FCP's locked up four or five times now). I tried to force quit and the force quit didn't work. It wouldn't even come up on the screen. I'm having every restart contested by the mirror agent. I can't get my .Mac account to stop syncing and, with all the crashes I've had, there's not much for it to sync! Still, it's running constantly and won't respond to a "Cancel Sync" command.
It's like every program on my computer has gone nuts! I tried repairing permissions and the Disk Utility froze up. I've ditched my preferences on some of the programs but nothing seems to help. Everything I touch turns to mud!
Any ideas what I can try?
    TIA,
    Peter

petemay, when I just now saw the subject line for your post, I thought you must be suffering from the same problem as me, because I too feel like my computer is possessed! And sure enough, I learn that you also just ran Software Update and installed the most recent Security Update along with other files.
    See this thread of mine:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1459413&tstart=0
I too have a Seagate drive (with 4 partitions/volumes) in an external firewire enclosure, but I don't think that's part of the problem in my case (I often have it shut off, and the problem persists whether it's on or off). I am now convinced (after reading various Security Update-related posts here) that the source of the problem is the 2008-002 Security Update.
I have been getting endlessly spinning ballz whenever I attempt to save or download a file (even a tiny jpg or text-only web page). Force Quit eventually works after quarter-hours and half-hours --kinda-- but it's barely worth the pain of waiting for it to do so. The Force Quit dialog box regularly shows 3, 4, or 5 apps (usually including the Finder) "not responding."
What will it take to get Apple to fix whatever's been messed up by that **** Security Update? So far, none of these hangs has brought up the crash report dialog box, and anyway I understand that those crash reports are not read. How do we bring this to their attention?

  • Help! I think my CD/DVD drive is possessed!

My CD/DVD drive (Philips CDD5101) has started opening and closing over and over again, seemingly with a mind of it's own.
The problem is also intermittent. For example, when I logged in this morning it started opening and closing, I restarted and it stopped opening and closing, but the drive did not show up in System Profiler. I restarted again, and it started opening and closing again (after rebooting), but then stopped after a few minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It opens once and closes once at boot or it keeps opening and closing multiple times?
If it opens and closes once then you probably don't have a startup disk selected in the startup disk preference pane. Select a startup disk and see if it stops the opening and closing.
