N82 black - slow wireless internet connection

Hi
New to the group and just got N82 through Orange.
Really like the phone but disappointed with the wireless internet connecion - one of the features I was attracted to.
I have a Netgear wireless router connected to a cable modem, with a 2Mb cable internet connection. My laptop runs fine on this connecion.
My phone identifies and connects to the WLAN fine through the wizard (phones reports a 100% signal strength from the wireless router) however I get a few problems when trying to connect to the internet:
1) Very slow download of pages apart from the homepage (which I have changed to bbc.co.uk). Most of the time pages hang half way through.
2) Frequent "Internet timeouts".
As the router signal strength is very strong (I am trying this a few feet away from the router) and my laptop connects and downloads just fine I can only think that there is something with the phone that isn't quite right or a setting which needs adjusting.
My router has WPA2 security set up and I think my phone has the latest firmware (v. 20.0.062).
Can anyone help improve my internet experience with this phone?

Thanks very much, it seems to have made a difference. Pages that previously hung now load.
I was hoping to post this reply using my phone but the discussions site doesn't seem to work properly!
Thanks again for your help.

  • Slow wireless internet connection using airport extreme

My wireless internet connection works but is very slow (<80kbs). The problem seems to be with the airport extreme (brand new, purchased in May 07) because my connection is very fast (>6mbs) when i connect by wire to the airport extreme base station. Signal strength is strong, so i can't figure out the problem. Any ideas?

BK37, I hope you've solved your problem by now. But if not, and for the benefit of others reading this post, let me share what I (finally) discovered when I had virtually the same problem, i.e. 8mbps wired speed, <50kbps wireless speed.
I tried literally <span style="font-style:italic;">every suggestion I could find in the Airport discussions. First, I can assure you that changing the channel can give you incremental speed improvements in some instances, but for radical drops like yours, it's not the answer. Nor is turning off ipv6, or changing to WEP, or turning off Remote Access, or moving the AEBS, or or or or or....
With such a radical drop in speed, it's most likely you have a hardware-related blockage somewhere. In my case it was my wiring configuration. My setup was France Telecom Livebox (ADSL modem / ethernet & 802.11g router) --> Ethernet cable --> Linksys RTP 3100 IP phone adapter / router --> Ethernet cable --> AEBS --> 3 Airport Express set up to extend network and run AirTunes. After eliminating every other possible problem, I narrowed it down to the Linksys router, which for reasons I have yet to figure out was trapping the speed to the AEBS. I ethernet cabled both the Linksys router and the AEBS directly to the Livebox and presto! Back to blazing speed.
Hopefully this info will be helpful to you or some poor soul in the same situation, as I would have loved to have had it myself before I pulled every hair out of my head!

  • Slow wireless internet connection after 10.6.4 update

After the initial excitement switching from windows to mac, I'm now having a problem I can't figure out. This problem is mentioned many times in several forums, but I'am unable to find the proper solution.
After unpacking my new MacBook air last week everything worked simple, smooth an correct. Then an automatic update to OS X 10.6.4 was downloaded and installed. I'm having troubles with my wireless internet.
Airport seems to be functioning ok but most sites take ages to load. There's also problems with loading pictures, movies, dynamic contents, etc. Some sites function partially on Firefox, Safari seems to be hanging al the time.
Resetting router, starting MBA in safe mode didn't have any effect. On the ethernet connection the mac and internet is working as a dream. Other windows device also function normally. How do I get my wireless internet working properly??
    Help!

I had exactly the same problem after updating my mac to 10.6.4. I did the usual and trawled the net but could not find a decent fix. It became very very frustrating so in the end I rang apple and luckily I spoke to a technician who had exactly the same problem with his machine. He explained it doesn't effect every mac for reasons I wont go into here but in order to fix this problem 100% guaranteed, you need to do a reformat and a reinstall. This should be done periodically anyway to keep your machine running in tip top condition. I wasn't happy to have to do it but in the end I'm glad I did.
For those who have not done this before see instructions below.
    1. Back up your disk with time machine to an external HD
    2. Boot from installation disk (holding down C)
    3. After choosing english language select utilities from menu bar and select disk utilities.
    4. Select your mac hard drive, erase, and in security options select "zero out disk" and erase.
    5. Reinstall operating system with installation disk, when done update to 10.6.4 assuming that was the system you had installed when you backed up.
    6. Reboot again holding C with installation disk, select utilities then restore option, choose your time machine backup and away you go. FIXED!
It takes a while but you will probably spend just as much time hunting the net for fixes that just wont work and anyway you end up with a clean install that will probably fix other little bugs you were unaware of.

  • Can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

  • Wireless Internet Connection Slow

Whenever I access the internet on my Mini, the speed is slower than my other wireless internet connections on my PCs. Whenever I click a link or type in a URL to go to, it takes awhile for it to connect to the site (in the status bar, it will be stuck on the "Looking up -url-" for a bit); once it is connected, it loads fairly fast.
However, using the same wireless internet network, the internet speed on my PC computers are significantly faster. Is there a way to solve this speed issue? I've gotten used to it somewhat, it would just be nicer if it was the normal, faster speed that it's supposed to be.
    -My ISP is Comcast
-I use Airport Extreme to connect to the wireless network

Might be a DNS issue, like we are talking about in this other thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1619004&tstart=0
If the DNS is misconfigured, the PCs may have different timeout threshholds from the Mac, and perhaps they jump to the next DNS quicker than the Mac does.
Anytime you see lots of "looking up" messages, it's a good bet the DNSes are not configured right.

  • Slow Wireless Internet (BT homehub)

Hello, I have a problem with slow, wireless internet with the BT Broadband Homehub 2 (black). I am using a 1g Macbook 2 running 10.4.11.
A quick summary of my problem: Recently, there was a fault on my line that was affecting my phone and my broadband. BT quickly repaired the fault and reset the broadband as I complained about the speed. Connection monitors and speed tests all say that everything is running fine although I Firefox and Safari are loading pages extremely slowly; streaming of media is impossible and it sometimes times out before I can even send webmail. When I first got the connection it was lightning fast (so much so that friends commented on it when they came over). I have see that lots of people seem to be having this problem with Macbooks and I am 99.9% certain that the issue is a mac software/hardware issue. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested in other threads
1.I have manually entered different recommended DNS figures
    2. I have changed the wireless channels
    3. I have manually entered the DNS figures supplied by the ISP
    4. I have rebooted with default settings
Nothing seems to work. I'm a little bit out of my depth with this sort of thing but I have noticed that the IP address supplied by my router to airport settings doesn't correspond with the IP address in the
ISP info. I tried changing that but then I couldn't connect at all. Somebody must know what is going on here as I've seen this problem quoted on this and other forums. Is it a problem that apple are aware of? Somebody please help as this is very very frustrating.
    Thanks everyone.

Hi Jocksil, and a warm welcome to the forums!
BDAqua, what does you psot mean?
No idea if it worked for the OP, some never return to tell us what happened.
My suggestion should speed up a lot of connections, and never hurt anything, but not sure what the mentioned problem was, but my suggestion won't likely help connecting in the first place, unless it really is connecting, not just getting anywhere once connected.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.254.3.183 behind the scenes.
Feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

  • IMAC Wireless Internet Connection Problems All Of A Sudden

My Imac is well over a year and a bit old and has been able to connect to my wireless internet connection absolutely fine until the past week and a half. At first the connection wouldn't work and when I would turn my airport on and off and reset the router, it would eventually work, now that is not working at all. My airport status is either showing 'airport is turned on but is not connected to a network' or 'airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet'
I have formatted my imac twice and still no avail and the last format I tried to join wirelessly straight from boot but it wouldn't join saying 'there is a problem with the wireless connection and you're not connected to the internet.' the annoying thing is I can see the network sitting there and can't join it, my network is also unsecure so no need to input a password. All my home PC's and my Iphone and Blackberry find the network easily enough, although recently the Iphone has began showing only 1 bar of wifi connection.
I am at my wits end as I am unable to connect at all now, I am all out of ideas and have been bashing my head off a wall for the past day without any connection at all.
My router is a buffalo AirStation wireless G high power model, my IMAC is an intel core 2 duo 20", if you need anymore information of my hardware I will gladly provide it. I'm running MAC OSX Leopard 10.5, out the box as I've been unable to run any software updates as I can't connect to the internet.
Please, if anyone can shed any light at all on this issue I would definately try anything.
    Thanks in advance and regards.

Anytime you see a self-assigned IP address in your network prefs you know it surely is a problem
with your router configuration. Power down all equip ... make sure modem is off for at least 5 minutes
restart modem, restart iMac ... check your network pref on iMac and make sure it's not 169.x.x.x
If so you will need to recapture the settings from your ISP's modem to the Buffalo.
Always use a secure wireless connection (WEP, WPA, WPA2) or else the whole neighborhood will suck down your bandwidth the slow down what your paying for. I use Time Capsules or AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Stations) that allow you to stealth mode and lower signal output and make the device
as a "closed network" ... meaning no one else can see and tap into your WIFI home network!
802.11N is better than G. and especially when you can use dual bands 2.4 / 5GHz to stop various home interferences. The backup of Time Machine only makes life much easier also! Xtech

  • Wireless internet connection is poor, wireless internet connection is poor

    Hi..
I just purchase an iMac desktop and dont know much on how to use them. A couple of questions: when i set up the comp, it suggested that i could transfer my data from another computer to this. Second question is: My wireless internet connection seems to be quite poor? Its slower than what is was on my laptop. I went to apple store, went to poor wirelss conection they wanted my serial number so i did that and it just had the loading symbol for aagggeess and nothing happened? ive tried to call Mac support, it said thats is currently closed but didnt say when they open.

  • Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: Help?

Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: I am in FL using Brighthouse Cable as my internet provider (15MG down). The internet connection speed is slower than a dial up connection when wirelessly connected to my network to my Time Capsule. When I remove the Time Capsule and replace it with Brighthouses Netgear router the internet speed are normal (fast). Additionally, the internet speed is OK when I first hit a website, but the speed degrades rapidly as I access additional web pages. I no longer use my Time Capsule and therefore are not getting my back-up protection. (NOTE: I tried Verizon Fios and had the same problem.) Can anyone help?

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

  • ITunes 8.1 works great but killed wireless internet connection

I installed version 8.1 on both my laptop( PowerBook g4/ OS 10.4.11) and desktop (imac intel / OS 10.5) and after restarting the computer, the wireless internet connection stopped working on both.
I would open Safari and it would be a blank page and and the circle would keep spinning.
So I tried my laptop at a different wireless hotspot and had the same result.
I then tried repairing permissions and I got a list of problems with iTunes/Network Utilities, they repaired and now when I open Safari I get the message that it can not connect to the internet.
I do get an internet connection using ethernet on both.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Did you by any chance also update the firmware on your Apple Airport Extreme (if that's what you have)?
I thought 8.1 killed my connection to my Apple TV, but it was the faulty firmware (see reports elsewhere in these forums).
Now that I have rolled back from 7.4.1 on my Airport I plan to try iTunes again (with white knuckles).

Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

  • Setting up a Wireless Internet Connection on Solaris 10

I am new to the whole Solaris/unix world and I was just wondering how to set up a wireless internet connection with a solaris 10 machine. I have a linksys router hooked up to a cable modem and a linksys receiver hooked up via USB on the solaris machine. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Was the router supplied by the ISP or was it bought separately? Are you able to get online when connecting the Mac directly to the router via an ethernet cable? Either way it's best to check the router settings to ensure they are correct.
I’ve not come across the Zoom routers. Setup should be straight forward though, having gone to their website and downloaded the manual. Do the following:
    1. Plug one end of the RJ-11 cable (included in the box) to the router, the other end to your phone line via the micro-filter.
    2. Plug one end of the ethernet cable (again included in the box) to the appropriate port in the router, the other end to your Mac.
    3. Plug in the power cord and switch on
    4. Fire up your web browser on your Mac (Safari, Camino, Firefox etc)
    5. In the address bar of the web browser type 10.0.0.2 and hit the Return button
    6. A Network Password box will appear. This is to gain access to the router itself. The defaults are, Username = admin, Password = zoomadsl
    7. You’ll now enter the Basic Setup screen. It’s here where you enter the username and password supplied by your ISP. This is NOT your email username/password but your Internet access ones. If you are not sure or don't have them, call your ISP.
    8. Click Save Changes and then click Write Settings to Flash and Reboot. Once the router has reset itself and the Link light comes on and remains steady, you’re online.
    That’s it. Job done
If you still cannot get access it may be worth resetting the router (there should be a small button in the back which requires the use of a pen or pencil to press) re-entering your ISP information as described above and trying again.
Let me know how you get on.

Please, help me to set up wireless Internet connection. My router is WRT54GS. I able to get online when computer is wired direct to VPN internet cable.
First, I can’t open password request screen on http://192.168.1.1.
Second, when "Setup wizard" runs step #6 (“Check the router’s status”), the program asks for the password. Default password “admin” is rejected by the program and I can’t install Linksys software. Just in case I already pressed reset switch on the back of the router but to no avail.

    hi pensive ,
Seems interesting , first do this -  push the reset button on the back of router .
push it till 30 seconds , unplug the power cable and plug in the power cable back in After completion of 30 seconds.
then try to log into , 192.168.1.1 again . with the password "admin".
    see if it reply?
    Else -
    strt>cmd>ipconfig /all - post the result ?
