N82 using sat-nav without A-GPS

I have recently purchased a Nokia N82 and for the next couple of weeks will be using it with a Pay as you go account.
I have used the sat-nav but find it quite expensive using A-GPS. Can anyone please help with a couple of questions?
1. Can I use the sat nav without A-GPS? (so to work like a regular sat-nav unit)
2. If so, how do I turn it off?
Many thanks!!!

You can use it without A-GPS but it will take much longer to get a fix (could be a few minutes if you are in a built-up area).
To disable it:
Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods > Assisted GPS > Disable

Can I use a sat nav app on my iPad Air without 3G or wifi

Why are you commenting on a thread that's more than 6 months old? If you'd read my response you'd see I had not intended any sarcasm. Neither is it my fault that someone posting may not have fully thought through what it is they're asking which is the advice given by these Forums prior to posting.
The 'i' prefix in anything Apple makes stands for 'internet' which is common knowledge. SatNav can't possibly work without having some kind of network connection either through Wi-Fi or 3G. As I understand it asking that question is a bit like asking "can I fly to any country in the world without using a plane?".
It's OK to ask what most perceive as a 'dumb' question and it's equally OK to respond by asking if it's a serious question. There are a lot of time wasters whom have nothing better to do other than asking questions that require no answers or have no answers. "Serious or non-serious techies" like me (which I'm not) like to give something back to the community of Apple Users because (in the main) we want to be helpful.
Again no sarcasm intended to anyone.

  • N95 8GB - Pay to use sat nav?!

Am I missing something? I paid a fair wedge for my N95 8GB, and one of the things that attracted me to it was the built in sat nav.
Today I go to use it properly for the first time and find that I have to pay to activate one of the most obvious functions, namely the navigation to a destination!! Not only that, but this cost is only for a limited time period then I have to pay again!
I really hope I'm missing the point and someone can tell me what I'm missing, or guide me to an alternative app I can install?
    Thanks

    Couldn't agree more my man.
Well.... Being a Moto / SE fan myself...
Against my better judgment - I let my wife buy an N95. One of the major selling points (To her) was the built-in GPS.
I'm sorry - But I have a problem shelling out a grand on a phone, then to be politely informed that it will cost a further $100 per year to use the navigation system. (In Aust.)
Without the $100 a year subcription - the GPS is useless! (I'm sorry Jericho - but if the thing can't tell you how to get from A to B - Then it's NOT a navigation system)
And PER YEAR? So do we get a different voice every 12 months?
Will work better in 5 years time? (After all it will be a $500 investment by then)
THEN - my mate goes and buys the far cheaper (and theoretically lower spec 6110 Nav) - guess what? Route-66 included - WITH voice guided navigation out of the box? No extra charge to you sir...
What am I missing here NOKIA? Did I just buy the more expensive phone to get shafted harder?
Yes I know I can go and buy route 66 or Garmin XT - But when I can purchase a navteq based handheld for $170 (I have one in front of me) - where is the justification?

  • Sat Nav without data charges?

Hi, would love to know how to use the sat nav w/o connecting to the net, I have disabled assisted GPS - is this enough? I dont want to eat into my data useage each time I use the sat nav...I'm sure it can be done but cant remenber how! FYI its a C6.
    Thanks in advance folks

You have to disable all other positioning methods apart from Integrated gps.
You also need to pre-download the map data and set Ovi Maps to Offline.

  • Using Sat nav only on iphone 3g or 3gs.

I am going to buy iphone for using as sat nav when cycling abroad. I dont want to have a phone contract yet because i dont need internet usage plus its very expensive.
If i buy the iphone and want to use tom tom sat nav app, how do i get the app onto my iphone if the iphone doesnt have any contract/internet connection?

Just sync it to your phone through iTunes.

  • N95 Sat Nav help

    Hi
I am not sure if this has a really simple answer (ie pay for it) but downloaded the UK map last week and have tried ever since to start using the Sat Nav.
What ever I tried it just didn't get a GPS signal... Next I tried using my separate GPS receiver and blue toothing it to my N95. It paired perfectly but still no GPS signal received.
Is this because the guys at Nokia want more of my hard earned cash for using Sat Nav?
    Any help appreciated.
    A.

    Hi adrianwalsh
You only need to pay if you want "voice navigation"
Go outside hold phone with keypad slider open at 45 degrees, don't cover the "#" key as GPS antenna is below this. you need view of clear sky away from buildings and trees.
I suggest you open GPS data application to monitor situation.
Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > GPS data > Position > Open > Options > Satellite status > Open:
You will see 5 empty rectangle outlines, you need a minimum of three solid black rectangles for triangulation, but usually get four for lock-on postion.
If you don't get any solid bars by 20 mins your GPS isn't working!
Start Maps on N95 and get satellite lock-on (RED CROSS on satellite icon bottom right disappears) location is then saved on closing application (get message above globe on screen)

  • Phones with Sat-Nav

Hi, I am trying to upgrade to a phone with sat-nav, however I can't seem to find out which phones are capable of Sat-Nav. The Nokia website doesn't really have flashing lights with a banner saying "use sat-nav on this phone".
Can anyone tell me what phone you are using sat-nav on, does it work well, and would you upgrade anything on it, in order for it to work more efficiently?
    Thanks

All the Nokia Smartphones are capable of running Sat-Nav programs, including the 6600, 6630, 6680, N70, N90 & 9500 to mention a few. I think that I am right in saying that if the phone has a memory card slot, then it is a smartphone. Perhaps someone could correct me if I am wrong. You can also check the websites of the Sat-Nav software companies for compatible phones.
There are also a number of different Sat-Nav programs available including TomTom Mobile, Route 66, Navicore and Wayfinder. For reviews of the different options have a look at www.pocketgps.co.uk and look for mobile phone navigation reviews.
Beware though that there is an issue with using TomTom on the N70 where the bluetooth connection between the phone and GPS reciever keeps dropping so if TomTom Mobile or the N70 are your favoured options, consider a different phone or Sat-Nav software.
The pocketgps website is an excellent resource of Sat-Nav advice including forums on any issue you can think of.

  • Nokia N95 Sat NAV

I have recently upgraded to nokia n95 black, i want to use sat nav on it like you use navigation device (Tom Tom) does any one know how to use it and how much will it cost me.

  • Hi. Can you tell me if using the sat nav functionality on the in-built maps app on my iphone 5, uses just GPS (hence no cost) or GPS and data roaming, hence a running cost for the extent of my journey?

    Hi
As the tile says, I am looking to find out if I need to purchase an actual Sat-nav app or if I can use the inbuilt functionality and not incur additional data charges
    Thanks

The built in Maps apps requires a data connection to download mapping data. So, if you want to avoid data costs, you need to purchase a navigation app that stores the data locally on your phone.

i have 5 html pages that share a common header, footer, and sidebar. how do i use my nav bar to change the content of the body without duplicating a lot of code? thank you!

i inherited the website. It’s for a non-profit and is not very
sophisticated, and neither am I in webdesign. It currently has multiple
pages that are identical except for that body section, so whenever i change
the navigation (in the sidebar) I have to update every html page.  I want
to have one basic page, and just call in the different body content based
on the link the user selects from the nav bar. How can i do that using a
    script? i am using Dreamweaver.

  • Best iPhone Sat Nav for light use

I have to change cars this week, my current car has intergrated SatNav, new one won't.
So was thinking of getting a Sat Nav app for my iPhone 4. I currently have N-Drive but now can't find it on the app store. Is this good enough for me?
I would say that I only use it once in a while really, not heavy and everyday use. I've had Tom Toms and they see fine, but they are £50 for UK map only. Co-pilot is £20 big difference.
I like POIs as often go for trips with family, Co-pilot doesn't seem to allow you to load your own though?
Is map share on Tom Tom whereby it updates maps for corrections from users often? I think TT allows own POIs to eg from Pocketgpsworld?
I also for the few occasions like speed camera database, which I believe Co-pilot and TT do.
So any others? What are they all like as an expeience on a relatively small screen (integrated one was 6" screen)
    Cheers

Motion X GPS Drive app for .99 cents (US). Cheap, excellent, and only pay as you need it for the data which would be IDEAL for your use. I'm like you. Just need it once in a while.

  • I wish to use my new ipad regularly as a sat nav in my car. Would I definitely need a cellular ipad for this or would tethering between my iphone and ipad work?

I wish to use my ipad regularly as a sat nav in my car. Would I definitely need a cellular Ipad or would tethering between my iphone and ipad work just as well ?

I would suggest that u get the cellular wifi model because it has a built in gps when there is no cellular coverage the gps will still work as it gets it signal directly off the satellite when ur tethering your phone to your iPad on the wifi model only  I'm not too sure if it will work if u have no cellular coverage someone may more info on this subject.

can i use my playbook as a GPS without wifi niether bridge connection?
    please help me!!!
    Solved!

@vanawful, the GPS capability comes from the TI WiLink 7 chip (WL-1283) that provides all the wireless capabilities for the WiFi-only PlayBook.
Although the jury's still out on whether different units may behave differently, so far it appears likely every unit *can* work, under the right conditions, but problems in the software (OS level) or possibly in the chip itself (nobody's saying yet) mean that it's quite unreliable.
There is no need to have WiFi enabled for it, and I've used the GPS frequently now with WiFi off and no nearby hotspots, no tethering (I don't even have a smartphone), and just the GPS running.
If you pick a clear day (i.e. no big rain clouds off to the south, etc), are out in the open without buildings or other things blocking the view of the sky, make certain you are not covering up the lower-right corner of the PlayBook where it appears the GPS antenna is, run the Compass app, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes (if this is your first time using it) so it can find and download ephemeris data from each satellite, you should see it start reporting lat/long positions after that.
If you do this, and it doesn't work, try again. Then try again. Maybe try another time. Preferably do this on different days too, and possibly after a reboot. Yes, it appears to be that flaky sometimes...
I've written my own GPS recording app (no fancy map... just records the readings) and done numerous tests at this point. The readings, when they arrive, are generally exceptionally good. The main problem is getting them to actually arrive and, so far, I've found nothing that can force the issue. Even with my own app, I sometimes have to start it up and leave it alone for some minutes, 4-5 times, before I get the first reading, and there are days I've just given up and moved on. The next day it will simply work. It's largely random.
The three single biggest things you need to remember to get any readings: be outdoors away from big buildings, don't pick a heavily overcast day, and do NOT hold the unit with your right hand covering the bottom right corner (when held in the default landscape orientation with the cameras on top, that is).

  • 3rd party sat nav for e51

i am looking for a 3rd party sat nav that is compatible with my e51, i understand that i need an external receiver but am not sure which one would be the best for my phone?
ideally the mapping of the sat nav would be topographical as well as street mapping to maximise its use.
any ideas outhere would be appreciated.

    Hi mal5336
An indication of your worldwide location may help in choice of application here as some providers maps are better for particular regions. Nokia do produce two external Bluetooth GPS receivers LD-3W and LD-4W but cheaper alternatives are available, but it would be an idea to try before you buy as software updates to Nokia devices have been known in the past to introduce compatibility issues unfortunately.
