[N85] USB charging problem

Hello all,
I tried to charge my N85 with an [non-Nokia] USB battery charger (Lenovo 90W Slim AC/DC Combo Adapter) via the Nokia Connectivity Cable (CA-101) to keep down the amount of chargers I have to carry.
But except of asking, which data connection profile I want to use, there is no charging at all.
Am I doing something wrong or is the N85 only chargeable by the original Nokia wall charger?
Thank you
sicut

@sapporaby: Are you sure you have read my post completely? "Apple" is a brand o usb charger that does not work with my Nokia N85. It's a brand like "Kensington", with a usb charger that do work. Both usb charger worked with my old Nokia N95. I just want to know whether someone else has this problem usb charging problems too or if only my problem, and to make know @sicut that he is not the only one with usb charging problems with his Nokia N85 and his Lenovo charger.
@sapporaby, is it "apple" a word taboo for you? Why "kensington" is not taboo? Why "lenovo" is not taboo either?
1. I have had every Mac made since 2003.
2. I am typing this on a Mac now.
3. I have had and still have every iPhone made.
4. Same with every brand iPod.
5. I am running Apple software right now and the Nokia for Mac software.
Is that taboo enough for you? DON'T ASSUME because now your taboo question is moot.
As for your the Apple charger does not work issue, my question still stands. While your Apple charger may have worked with your N95 there is no reason why it should work with your N85. Are they the same phone?. Is the N85 made by Apple? No again. Does the Apple charger supply the same charging voltage as the Nokia charger that came with the phone? These are issues that come into play. What is so hard to use the cable that came with the phone. It seems, and maybe I am wrong but you and the OP are making a mountain out of a moe-hill.
Just use the cable that came with the phone, in the USB port of your computer and be done with it. I am having a very hard time trying to understand what the problem is with using the cable.

  • N86 USB charging problems

The N86 uses its micro USB port as the main point chraging but, for some reason, only accepts from the included charger or when the included USB cable is connected to a PC.
I bought an external USB battery from Amazon that I used during travel to charge my iPod and other devices that use USB charging, but the problem is that it doesn't charge the N86 no matter how many times I try it. It also didn't want to charge when I connected its USB cable to a USB wall plug.
The output of the battery is upto 1000mA which is the same the max for the USB port.
Can anyone can shed any light on this matter?
    Thanks in advance!

I recently bought the HAMA "Piccolino" charger kit with both a "100-240V socket to USB" and a "12V Car Cigarette lighter plug to USB"
At first no luck charging my N86 8MP
But after shorting pin 2 and 3 in the USB the charging works
It seams that the phone don't see the charger when pin 2-3 is not in data mode or shorted.
Pin 2 and 3 are the two middle pins in the standard USB plug.

  • GXone Commando usb charging problems

Something strange about usb charging via cpu. If your phone is off it will not charge via usb to cpu. If your phone is on it will only charge if you select mass storage? Will not charge if you select charge only. **bleep** people at two Verizon stores were no help!

To the OP, 91Fatboy, have you tried the suggestion provided by JCF484?

"you might want to check the USB controller in your device manager and see if has the yellow triangle indicating that there is a problem, if there is just right click on the port with the yellow triangle and click uninstall then reboot your PC it will reinstall itself then try the steps i have done. Please forgive me if you already know how to deal with a bad USB port."
If these steps or troubleshooting did not resolve your concerns, please let us know and we'll be more than happy to assist you further.
Also, there is a difference between the USB charger and a wall or vehicle charger. The USB cable is meant for data transfer and provides only enough wattage to do so. It will charge your phone slower because the wattage put out by the USB ports is very much less than that of a wall. This is why it would not charge your phone when it was completely out of charge.
In closing, most phones are programmed now to charge only when on. I realize this may mean a longer charge time, but on the iPhone for example, if the phone is powered off when plugged into the charger, it will power itself on. This cannot be changed.
    Thanks,

  • Droid X - USB charging problems?

Is anyone aware of USB charging issues with the droid X?
i'm an IT consultant, one of my customers recently got a droid X.
the battery died on them when on the road and the phone would not turn itself on.
when connected directly to a USB port on a PC or a generic USB car charger (where it provides a usb port to plug your typical data cable in to), it did not show the graphic that the phone was charging, nor would it power up.
This was a big issue, when on the road they need to be able to plug it in to a usb port in their car or a computer and be able to turn it on and talk while it's charging.
I tested with other phones (samsung galaxy s, blackberry storm) and it was able to charge fine off both this PC and charger so i know it's not the port that's the issue.
When plugging it in to a wall outlet, it showed the graphic that the battery was at 0%, then it would power up.
i let it charge for awhile and after that i was able to transfer it over to a PC and it would stay up and it would be charging.
Why wouldn't it just charge and power up when originally plugged in to a car charger or a computer's USB port?
For other phones on the market i've been able to just plug in to the computers' usb port and it allows you to turn it on and it charges, etc.
It almost seems that the Droid X really requires more power than a usb port provides.
    thanks.

Business people who are on the road all day cannot afford to have their phone not boot until they can use a wall charger if the battery dies, it's as simple as that.
Both Verizon and Motorola should make this issue well known instead of acting like it's not a problem and it doesn't exist.
Verizon support had no answers and referred me to motorola.
Motorola tier 2 support had no ideas and recommended that the phone was defective and we should work with the carrier to get a replacement.
From what i'm reading it is a known problem and they should be very up front when someone calls about it rather than starting the blame game between the carrier and manufacturer.
People are entitled to their opinion on if a phone not being able to boot off of usb power is a good idea or not, no need to get upset.
Personally I think that standardizing everything on usb makes sense so that customers could boot/charge off of any device that has usb or a wall adapter that provides a usb port.  Things are starting to move in that direction with newer cars including USB ports for charging purposes,  etc.

  • USB charging problems

Okay, this one is odd; I searched the forum but couldn't find exactly this problem.
When I plug my iPhone into a wall socket with my regular charger, it charges just fine.
But when I plug it in to my computer via USB, it doesn't even RECOGNIZE my phone and fails to charge.
HOWEVER, if the phone is DEAD and I plug it in, it charges until it powers up, then it stops, leaving it in the red.
I've tried restarting computer and iPhone, resetting, changing USB ports, but no go so far. It sounds like a software problem but I'm baffled.

Charge the phone using the adaptor and then try to connect in recovery mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • N85 - USB charging

I have tried to charge the battery of my N85 via a USB cable but find that I get no response. The battery charging symbol does not indicate that anything is happening and the battery charge level does not increase even over a protracted period. Apart from establishing a connection with the computer's USB port, is there anything else that I should be doing?

Try another port on your pc. Only certain ports of every pc has enough power to charge something. On mine, only the two front USB ports can be used for charging

  • C5-00 USB charging problem

Just discovered that my C5 cannot be charged using USB wall chargers. Tried apple, philips, belkin chargers- none of them work with C5. When plugged in, there is no notification or beep but a mild shock can be felt at the back cover! Strangely, it works fine with computer USB ports.

apple, philips, belkin chargers- WONT WORK.

  • Blackberry tour usb charging problem

A few days ago I tried to charge my tour with a (cheap or thinner) usb cord and it would not charge.  That night my phone did not charge correctly and then the next day I observed my phone sometimes showing charging when it was not.  Now my phone will not charge at all when connected to the usb wall charger, nor the computer with the blackberry provided usb cord and all peoridically I get this message
"The charging source connected to your BlackBerry device cannot charge your battery.  (More Information)"
Then "Some USB hubs might not provide enough power. Plug the hub into a power outlet (if available) and reconnect your BlackBerry device.  Try connecting to another USB port (different computer, USB hub, or travel charger).  Verify that your USB cable is securely connected to your BlackBerry device and a USB port.  Verify that your computer is not in standby.  (OK)"
Since I have tried to connect it with different cables to different computers and also to travel charges I seem to have run out of options.
Here is where I stand, taking the battery out for a while and replacing it did allow me to connect and charge to the computer but as soon as i took it off it gave me the error message and reverts back to the old mode.  I also can still charge the phone with my craddle.
Since I was able to back my phone up I would not mind trying to do some sort of clean wipe (like you can do with the computer) but I cannot figure out how to do that.
My phone is out of warranty,  Although I am somewhat curious if I get an year extended warranty through my CC or not.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank You

That is really strange that the battery replacement didn't fix the issue
Options / Security Options / General Settings / Menu / Wipe Handheld
Make sure you have all your data backed up, contacts, and know which apps you want to download again..this will wipe everything. I would call in to vzw and see if your phone does have TEC on it and then you can just get a free replacement if so. If not you can purchase a CPO device (usually half the cost of full retail)

  • USB Charging Problem

I have replaced 2 Ipod 60G photos and 3 USB chargers and it still would not charge from the wall. It charges charge from the computer. I borrowed from my friend the fire wire charger and it charged OK. Is this the software or hardware bug? Why the Apple did not include the firewire charger in the first place? I have to buy the fire wire charger separately. Unless I had 2 Ipods defective...
    Thanks for the help

Try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.
Make certain your USB cable is connected to one of the PC's main rear USB ports. Not a USB hub, nor a monitor USB port, nor a USB port on the front of the PC.
    Download Desktop Manager from here:

  • Unplug the computer USB charging problem?

If the iPhone 4 often have iTunes on your computer without charge, then disconnect theUSB charging, there is no point lower right corner of your desktop icon "Safely RemoveHardware, and out of the media" to direct removal, it will not be on the iPhone 4Influential? or iPhone 4 itself on the removal of USB are designed??
I'm from Taiwan, may not translate well
    Huang.JyunSiang

If you remove the charger the computer will continue to run on battery. When you reconnect the charger the battery will begin to re-charge from whatever level it was at. Once the battery is fully charged the charging circuitry shuts off the charger to prevent over-charging and unnecessary charge re-cycling. The charger will turn back on once the battery level has dropped below 95 percent.
To get the best performance from your battery as well as maintain an accurate measure of battery charge you should calibrate the battery periodically.

  • 1520 USB charging problem

I have a 1520 that wont charge over usb using the supplied charger which works as I've tried it on another phone. It either stays at a percentage and doesn't move or actually discharges whilst plugged in although every indication is that its charging normally, wireless charging works though. Anything I can do or is it back for repairs ?

Try to press and hold the power and volume down buttons for about 10-15 seconds until the phone vibrates. You may have to reset the date and time after your phone restarts. Hope this helps.

  • Ipod touch usb charging problem when battery is low

I have a fairly new sony vaio laptop with usb 2.0. I've had a 16g touch for about two weeks now and it appeared to charge fine till today. Today was the first day I used it enough to get its battery below 20% (you get a warning) and when I plug it in to my laptop it syncs as usual and the battery charging icon even shows up but after 4-5 hours, the battery graphic is still red -it doesnt seem to have charged very much. I've tried rebooting (both the touch and my laptop) as well as charging my other ipod (a second gen nano) to prove that the ports are fine but that doesnt seem to have fixed this issue. I'd like to know if
    1) This is a genuine battery issue/bug and I need to get the ipod replaced
    2) I need to get an ac charger
    3) Anyone has any other creative fixes...
    Thanks,
    Shishir

You know I had my Nano do that a couple of time now that you mention it. It would sync with iTunes and everything was great (at least I thought). I use my Nano with the Nike+ thing and I belong to a few running challenges so I sync almost daily just to upload the running data. Well one day it went dead and I thought "there's no way" because it would get synced and I'd usually leave it on for a while. Well I check and sure enough it wouldn't charge. I tried all the ports and nothing. Tried my daughters' Nano and it wouldn't charge. Ended up charging my dead Nano on the PS2.
For whatever reason it just started charging again.

  • Usb ipod problems

It recognized the new iPod as "Unknown Device" in Device Manager... I went through all the steps I found in the Apple support network - and to no avail...
There's always that unrecognized yellow exclamation point on the question mark icon, even though the iPod is charging fine... What to do?
    Thank you in advance
    Ran Bleich

I have exactly the same problem, my 4g 20 gb Ipod will report a fully charged battery when I connect it to the Apple USB AC adapter (or any other AC USB power adapter), connecting it to my Laptop USB 2.0 port gives the same indication, however, the battery is not really charged, upon disconnecting the cable from the AC adapter or the USB port, the battery icon reverts to its former status (almost completely discharged). The only way I can charge this Ipod is to connect it to a powered Firewire port or dock the Ipod in my Altec Lansing InMotion speakers, I know the USB AC charger used to work before I updated Ipod with the latest updater, I did the update just after it became available, I am not sure if this problem was caused by the update or not, I don't usually have to use the USB ac adapter, so I can't tell if the usb charging problem appeared right after the update or much later.
It would be much appreciated if somebody posts a solution for this...

  • N85-3 USB Charging failure

I started with 11.047 and just installed 20.175.  Most of the time, when I would plug in the USB cable attached to my PC, the phone would indicate that it was charging... for about 2 seconds, and then indicate that it was not charging, despite a need to do so.  After the firmware upgrade, this behavior has gone from some of the time to all of the time.
So, as I sit here with a dead phone that refuses to charge, I query if this is behavior seen by anyone else, and/or something to be fixed in another future firmware release?  As much as I like this phone's features... I require it to do some basic things well, such as charge without complaint.

Does the charging work with the wallcharger that you have in the sales package?
If the battery is totally dead it can take a few minutes (let's say up to 15-30 minutes) until the charging process is visible. If you connect the usb cable to your PC you should see the white indicator light in the Navi Wheel.
The N85 will only start USB charging if the PC fullfils the usb spec.

  • E7 USB Charging does not work when keyboard is loc...

I have noticed that if the usb cable is connected when the E7 keyboard is locked, the phone does not charge.
Is this a bug or an "undocumented feature"?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just tested it on mine it charges without problems, btw I checked it by connecting to a PC in Ovi suite mode. I presume you face same problem using wall charger and PC USB charging. Restore it to factory settings and check(*#7780#), worth giving a shot. If it doesn't help take it to a Nokia care center.
