I downloaded "rootsh 1.5" via appl.manager.
then "Unable to install 'rootsh' " popped up.
the log-file says: apt-worker: Not handling unrelated package recorder. required disk space: 3156
firmware: 1.2009.44-1 (cannot update this either)

Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

When I try to install the new version of itunes it tells me I need to delete the old verson first.
When I try to uninstall it I get the error message,

Unable to install iTunes 5.0, cannot uninstall apple software updater

I am trying to update iTunes from ver 10.3.3 to 15.5.1.4 with no luck!! I can d/l the file, wneh it goes to install it through the update tool, I get an error saying the resource is unavailable, i have searched my entire hard drive for the file "applesoftwareupdate.msi" and its not here. Trying to remove it will not work either due to missing file. I have tried to manually remove the software tool with no luck. I am using windows xp. Is there anything i can do before i go through the grueling task of doing a full windows recovery?? Thanks for your time.

Cannot Uninstall, Install, or use

Ran the auto update, and now got the following message:
"The Older version of apple software update cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
I have tried just about everything listed in the forums, with no success.

So here I am, stuck with no working software, no uninstall options, and 2 ipods. And, to top it off system restore has failed to resolve this.

Okay. That's usually problems with your installation configuration information.
Let's try the following procedure.
First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes, Apple Software Update and Apple Mobile Device Support.
Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Once you've installed it, use it to clear any existing iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC. Launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.
Next, we'll manually remove any leftover program files.
(1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
(2) Open the Program Files folder.
(3) Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
(4) Right-click the Apple Software Update folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
(5) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(6) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue. (Note: These files may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(7) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
(8) Restart your computer.
Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? If so, reboot the PC again and try launching iTunes. Does it launch properly this time?

Cannot re-install or update Skype

Until about a week ago, everything was working fine. Then I got a notification saying there was a new update for Skype. I tried to install it, but I got an error message saying another version of Skype was already installed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype but it (along with many other applications) does not appear in my Control Panel to allow me to reinstall it. I've deleted every folder and program I can find related to Skype, including sifting through and deleting everything in the Registry, and I still get this error when I try to reinstall Skype. I have also tried to install Skype with the .msi file, and I still get this error. Please help, this is really frustrating.
The error message is Code 1638.
I am running Windows 7.

Unable to Uninstall, Install, nor Update iTunes

I'm seriously at my wits end with this, let me start by saying. Furthermore, it's rather disgraceful that virtually nobody helped me with this issue the last time I posted it. Regardless of such, back to the matter at hand.
I have been trying for months--MONTHS--to get some kind of progress on this. I am running on Windows 8, 64-Bit.
Every time I attempt to update iTunes from the Apple Software Update dock, it nears completion...then an exclamation mark in a red circle appears near both downloads, one after the other, and ultimately fails.
Yes, I HAVE attempted the "Download Only" button. Yes, I HAVE attempted uninstalling from the Control Panel, which leads to the biggest problem in that I can't remove the blasted program from there. I click uninstall, it blinks the "starting" box for a second, then nothing. So, I attempt through the "change" option, only to recieve the message that a problem occured during INSTALLATION. As this is Windows 8, the CleanUp Utility from before and Mr. FixIt both fail to install. So, I finally got ahold of Revo Uninstaller, and after that finally turned something up, it stated that the installation package was missing.
I've searched my computer for iTunes64.msi. It shows up in Regedit--but nowhere else. Speaking of, yes, I have tried the various Regedit sugessions of WOW 64 value changing and such. I've also granted permissions to Everyone on every Apple related file on my computer.
I repeat, I am running on Windows 8 64-Bit.
And please, please do not link me to Apple's site and suggest running from IE or Firefox, I have already tried that--and Google Chrome is my default browser for all, so I've tried from here, too.
I've looked around, and this seems not an entirely uncommon problem. However, none of the discussions bearing the same kinds of symptoms seem to ever be addressed. When iTunes NEEDS to be updated in order to sync with my iPod at all, this is nothing short of a crippling technical error.
Someone, anyone give me something to work with; this is nothing short of infuriating at this point.

Suddenly Cannot Uninstall/Install iTunes :( please help!

After a recent necessary restore, I went to the iTunes shortcut on my desktop to open the application and I receive the error message "that action is only available for products that are currently installed". So I attempted to re-download iTunes, however I am receiving the error message "older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact technical support group." (which I assume is this discussion board because I cannot find help anywhere else on the iTunes site.) When installing it attempts to uninstall the previous application, and the message reads "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. iTunes.msi cannot be found."

I cannot successfully install Itunes update 10.5.1 on my Dell

I have tried numerous times to install the 10.5.1 update in Itunes but am always unsuccessful. I have downloaded it to my laptop and tried to manually install with no success. Do I have to uninstall my old Itunes in order to get the new update? I need the update so that I can update my 2 iphones and ipad.

Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

I cannot successfully install macbookpro updates

I am running on 10.6.8 currently, and have had no problem in the past downloading updates for my mac through the Software Update until now. I currently have 14 items to download (itunes, imovie, quicktime, etc.), and when I click Install Now, it tells me I must restart my computer when the items are finished installing. However, as soon as I click install, the computer goes to the defult purple screen and it asks me to login and put in my password. other options are to restart, or turn off. i have tried all three, and they all do the same thing - nothing. my computer will restart and reopen the desk top but no changes will be made, and all 14 items are still there waiting to download. my internet is an airport and it is working properly. Please help, how can I get Software Update to work properly?

Run software update, write down what applications and version it says you need. Go to Apple support, in the search window type in one of the updates name and version, when it takes you that page download it, set your browser to download to the desktop (this make it a little easier). Do these one at a time, after the download do the install, after a successful install you can trash the installer. Yes this a pain, but I always do manual installs, as it seems to be more reliable. If you are connecting wireless there could be something interfering and causing a corruption, you might want to connect to your router via ethernet, this has happened to me before, hence doing it this way eliminates those issues. I hope this helps you.
You might want to do a permissions repair, this could be causing a problem. Go to utilities>disk utility, highlight your user disk (usually Macintosh HD, or whatever you may have named it, then click Repair Permissions.

Cannot install Java update or uninstall old version (Java error 1714)

Hello,
When I try to install a Java upadate it fails. When doing the installation for the new version from java.com it gives the message (translated form Dutch):
+"The function you wish to use is located on a networked location which is not available. Click OK to try again or type in the field below another path to where installation package jre1.6.0_26-c-l.msi is located"+
When I cancel the installation it gives the following message:
+"Error 1714. The older version of Java(TM) 6 update 31 cannot be removed. Contact you technical support group."+
I tried the solution according to Java located at http://www.java.com/nl/download/help/error_1714.xml where it says to delete the java installation first and then install the offline package. The only problem is that I cannot seem to uninstall the current installation in my remove software list. The version there is called"Java(TM) 6 Update 29". When I want to uninstall this it gives the same message when installing the update:
+"The function you wish to use is located on a networked location which is not available. Click OK to try again or type in the field below another path to where installation package jre1.6.0_26-c-l.msi is located"+
I tried to get rid of the entire java installation by using:
- Scanned for blocking virusses, no virruses found
- JavaRa did not succeed in deleting current version
- Tried installing to offline package, no success
- Running all steps in administrator mode
None of it any succes. None of the Java using websites seem to work anymore and I can't seem to fix this. Anybody know of a solution?

I cannot uninstall or install updated version of iTunes due to "missing .msi file".

I have been having an issue with updating my iTunes for the past month or so, and it turns out my mom is having the same issue. Both of our iPods and iPads immdiatly updated to iTunes 10.7, however both of our computers come up with the same error message saying the iTunes.msi file cant be located. I also cannot uninstall for the same reason. This just started happening about a month ago. I dont understand what happened. When I got to documents however I can see the iTunes setup file right there! Help! Now neither of us can sync.

For those having this same problem, someone else on here had a solution that worked really well if you have Windows. They directed me to a site ---> http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
From there on the righthand side you'll see links indicated by reaccuring double arrows labeled Downloaded locations. Click one of them, proceed to download. Once completed go to Start> All Programs> Windows Install Clean Up.
Click it and find all iTunes files and remove them. After that restart your laptop or PC and then try and download iTunes 10.7 again. It worked out for me really well. (:

I have read the faq & tried numerous time all suggested steps, to no avail
In device mgr, I am unable to uninstall the device, services.exe goes to 50-80% cpu usage for hours & hours, without ever uninstalling my SB
If on the other hand, I try to install with one of the recommended driver, it invariably tells that it need to uninstall a previous driver, then it stays at the uninstall full sreen for hours. Oddly enough, device mgr gives me a code 8 (no driver installed)
I need to nuke whatever's left of the driver, something ctzapxx.exe has not been able to help me do so far
I have spent the better part of the last 3 days trying to get this fixed, you guys are my last hope before I reformat

Thank you for the information, Harry. If you are installing from the HP CD which came with you then let us check with downloading the All-in-One software from the hp website and then check for the result.
First of all you need to uninstall the software which was already installed on your Vista computer , then we need to download the software and install the All-in-One software.
Here are the uninstallation steps to uninstall the software from the computer:
To completely uninstall the software, run the uninstaller at level three using these steps:
1. Turn the All-in-One off and disconnect any USB/Ethernet cable from All-in-One to computer.
2. Insert the all-in-one CD-ROM into the computer. Cancel any installation windows that appear.
3. Click Start on the taskbar and then click Run.
4. In the command box type the following command and press Enter key:
X:\Util\CCC\Uninstall_L3.bat
(X: is the CD-ROM drive letter of that the all-in-one CD-ROM is in)
Follow the above steps to uninstall the All-in-One software and then restart the computer .

FF downloaded some update and now I get error message saying update cannot be installed until I get rid of extra FF copies on computer-but I DON"T have any extra copies. I cannot even uninstall the only FF I now have!

I have a Toshiba laptop, Windows & Home Premium Edition operating system. I had FF 3.6.3 installed and up until 6:00 today it was sort of working properly. I find out later that my huasband cannot even open the browser, as every time he does, a dialog box opens up whcih says "UPdate cannot be installed. Please make sure no other copies of FF are running on computer, then restart FF to try again." But I do not have any other copies of FF. I really do not like it when FF auto installs stuff without my permission. Many times this stuff is downloaded and installed, only to raise havoc with my computer.
