N900 - How to update software and Reset ALL data.

If you have tried to reset an N900 from the settings menu on the device, you would have noticed it would have left all your data intact.
Sometimes you want to start from scratch and delete all data in one go.
Here is how you do it.
Its quite extensive, but comprehensive.
From a windows PC
You first need to download three pieces of software.
The first software you need is called "Maemo Flasher", and this is the program that needs to be installed on your PC and can be found here:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php
Download the latest version of Maemo Flasher (which is currently 3.5 at time of posting this), and make sure you download the .exe file (maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2.exe).
Install that file.
Next you need the software for the N900 itself.
That can be found here:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php
This page will ask you to enter your IMEI, with very clear instructions on where to find it.
Follow the on screen prompts until you reach the download section.
There are two pieces of software you need to download from there.
eMMC content - This is the package to erase all data held on your 32GB storage.
The Operating System.
OS 2009
PR 1.1.1
PR 1.2
There are, unfortunately, 3 different names for the OS.
Latest version is "PR 1.2 version 10.2010.19-1".
Download the latest eMMC package available, It's version 10.2010.13-2.
The OS is a little more difficult to figure out which one you need.
The notes alongside the software lets you find the right package easier.
I found the best way to check is to do the following: (On the N900)
Menu
Settings
About Product
This will show you this image(or similar)
Note the Version number on your N900's screen.
Download the OS package that matches the Version on your device. As shown in the image above, using the red text as an example.
For people that purchased the N900 in the UK, the OS package will probably be the same as the red text. But make sure you check.
Software downloads complete.
Place these two software packages in the following location on your PC.
c:\program files\maemo\flasher-3.5
You should now have two .bin files in the directory above.
Next steps.
Updating the N900 OS
Your battery needs to be 100% full to prevent any crashes which could leave your phone dead.
Turn your N900 off.
Press and hold the U key on the keypad.
Insert the USB cable (a USB symbol should appear on the top right of your N900 screen, and also the Nokia logo in the centre).
You can now let go of the U key.
On your PC: Navigate to the Start Menu and select Run.
In the Run box, type: cmd. Then OK
In the command window, type: cd\program files\maemo\flasher-3.5
Type: flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11.203.2_PR_F5_203_ARM.bin -f
(the file name above may be different to yours, you will need to replace the filename with the filename of the software you downloaded).
This image below shows the completed update of the OS, in the command prompt on your PC. This would have now removed any Apps you may have installed on the device, and reset the homescreens to how they were when you turned it on for the first time.
Your personal data, such as Contacts, Images, SMS will still be on the device.
So if you want to remove these aswell, follow the next steps.
Resetting the Mass Memory
Your battery needs to be 100% full to prevent any crashes which could leave your phone dead.
Turn your N900 off.
Press and hold the U key on the keypad.
Insert the USB cable (a USB symbol should appear on the top right of your N900 screen, and also the Nokia logo in the centre).
You can now let go of the U key.
(If you have left the command prompt open on your PC from updating the OS in the previous section, ignore steps 5,6,7)
On your PC: Navigate to the Start Menu and select Run.
In the Run box, type: cmd. Then OK
In the command window, type: cd\program files\maemo\flasher-3.5
 Type: flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.41-1.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
(the file name above may be different to yours, you will need to replace the filename with the filename of the software you downloaded).
This image below shows the completed reset of the eMMC (32GB HDD), in the command prompt on your PC.
This would have now removed any data you had stored there. Including Music, Photos, Contacts, SMS..
The complete reset of your N900 is now complete.
I hoped this has helped.
My posts are my opinion and in no way the direct views of Nokia.
If my posts are helpful, please give me some KUDOS using the green star on the left.

Hmm, it's odd, because the wiki.maemo and another thread here say it works fine on 7. I have put flasher into xp compatibility, but the cmd box has no way to change it - at least, if it does it's through a back route that i'm unaware of.
Attached the screen i see
Edit: what "run" dialog box? is that the cmd box?

What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? If the iTunes icon and cable then the phone is in recovery mode, in which case it's too late to take a new backup or to copy any content off the phone - you will have to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and reset it back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to the last backup that you took or just resync your content to it

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Updated 2.2 Iphone Software and lost all contact information! HELP!!

I have the old 8G Iphone and updated the new 2.2 Iphone software and lost all my contact information, video, pics, etc. I tried to hit restore and it did not bring anything back. Does Itunes save info as a back up? HELP!!
    Anthony

In regards to contact info, the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer.
With XP, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or with the address book used by Outlook Express, which I believe is named Windows Contacts.
Photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer, as with any other digital camera.
Music and video transferred to your iPhone should remain in your iTunes library on your computer, and the same for photos that were transferred to your iPhone from your computer.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup of your iPhone, which is updated if needed as the very first step during the sync process - if any of the data included with your iPhone's backup has changed since the last sync.
The backup stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, call favorites, contact info, and photos that were captured by your iPhone, but it isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup only for the last two. As already provided, contact info is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer, and photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer - as with any other digital camera.
You updated to 2.2 from which firmware version, and did you sync your iPhone with iTunes immediately before installing firmware update 2.2 to update your iPhone's backup if needed?
You can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. This will completely erase your iPhone followed by re-installing the current firmware version, which is 2.2. After 2.2 is re-installed, you will be prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. After your iPhone is restored from your iPhone's backup, this must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer your selected iTunes content from your computer to your iPhone along with any photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
If your contact information and photos that were captured by your iPhone are not restored from your iPhone's backup and you didn't sync contact information with a supported application on your computer and you didn't import the photos that were captured by your iPhone, this data will be lost.

  • Recently downloaded new software and now all of my wife's contacts appear in my contacts. How do I change this?

Recently downloaded new software and now all of my wife's contacts appear in my contacts. How do I change this?

I suggest creating a separate AppleID for iCloud for each individual and using the same one for iTunes. By having a separate one for iCloud you can keep your contacts separated, have more iCloud storage (5 gigs each instead of sharing 5 gigs) and each have your own iMessage contact. Otherwise you both will be able to see each others imessages. You can still use the same AppleID for the iTunes Store to share music and app purchases. The iPhone "Settings" has different location for inputting your iCloud and iTunes AppleID.

  • How to update software on multiple iPhones using same iTunes account?

How to update software on multiple iPhones using same iTunes account?

    SeanB15 wrote:
Here are more details on my situation which should help clarify things...
I purchased three iPhone 4 models back when they first came out (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library.  The problem is (as I understand it) that I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct without wiping out the separate contact lists, etc. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates and still be able to manage separate contact lists, etc. If I go this route, I assume we will lose all the apps on phones #2 and #3 that we have been "sharing"... correct? Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. Hopefully, one of you can help me??
we have 2 iphone 4's synced to the same itunes account for apps and music since the day we bought them, but each has a different icloud acct. they have both been updated on the same itunes account with every update that has come out since we bought them in december of 2010. nothing on either phone has ever been lost or duplicated. having said all that, maybe i'm missing something here, but we have had no problems. we do have itunes setup to sync manually. i do believe i'm a piker compared to lawrence finch, but i'm just telling you what happens in my house. maybe check with apple? is there a store near you?

  • Update is resetting all data on phone to blank?

    Model 6500s-1/Type - RM-240/Nokia PC Suite ver 7.1.62.1 software
I am told by the service people that once you update the phone's software, it resets all the data on it: contacts, messages and files (calendar notes fo all kinds)/
My big question is: IS THIS TRUE?
If so, then what's the use of it? Pray tell!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From the FAQs:
    The FAQ is contradictory somewhat:
    In some models,
    and
"... updating erases, but it warns you... "
"If you use your device to update its own software, user data is not deleted."
OK, so let me get this straight.
If I update the ph on its own, it's ok w data, while in some cases, when updating and the data will be erased, the software is warning about it (again, from the FAQs ), so you get an escape chance.
Now, when updating the Suite, once you connect it to the ph, it updates the ph, and so the danger of erasing data is there (in the appropriate cases)?
    Is that correct?

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

How to update software without wi-fi? It shows message that first connect to wi-fi then update even if I have 3G net on my phone i5.

    Hi Parmkshinde,
Here's why you should use Wifi to do a wireless software update:
While you'd be able to download an update over 3G/4G, the updates are so big that you'll be waiting a really long time (also, you'll eat up a ton of your monthly wireless data), so Wi-Fi is much easier here. You should also make sure you've got plenty of battery life. The download and installation process can take some time, so if you've got less then 50% battery, you may want to plug in to a power source.
    Hope this answers your question!
    Cheers,
    GB
