N900 owners wanted to beta test next Ovi Suite

Cpitchford already posted about this - the next version of Ovi Suite is planned to support the N900 and Nokia is now recruiting Beta testers.

I've been delving into the daemon on the phone that appears to be responsible for "pc suite" communication with Ovi suite / PC suite..
I'd love some linux support for just that.. stuff an entire suite, it'd be good to have some low level support.. integration with existing linux software would be much easier to achieve, then..
It looks horridly complex.. makes debugging a PITA

I haven't heard anything about what actual functionality will be included in 11g.This is what amaze me most. When I look on a particular release specially 9i when they put all the cool feature like dynamic SGA, UNDO, STATSPACK (i know its there in 8.1.7) I was thinking they made it so simple now what else they can put or enhance in it? Then 10g came and once again with super cool feature like ASM, AWR, SQL Tuning which make the job more simpler and something which one couldn't think of. Now once again with 10g I am unable to think what else they can put into it and I am ready for an another excitement ride to explore whats there in 11G and it will keep going on.

N900 and NSU/OVI Suite

i should have my n900 in the next couple days and thought it better to just do an update immediately before using the unit.
when i tried to download the NSU on my booklet 3g running windows 7 home premium, i recieved an error saying that the NSU is not compatible with my OS.
so, am i forced to use the OVI suite in order to do the update on the N900 firmware?

As far as I know, the N900 isn't actually supported by the Ovi Suite yet. I think you need pc suite for the moment.

Flasher is an alternative tool for flashing the firmware on a tablet device that does support Windows 7, and other non-windows systems too.. It might be worth a look. There's no new firmware available yet, any how so may be Ovi support will improve by the time it is released

Does this mean they're going to support text messaging on CDMA phones like everyone else [ie Motorola Tools/Razr V3a CDMA]?

Apparent problem with Ovi Suite and Win 7 64 bit

Apologies if this has already been covered, but i have searched quite thoroughly and i haven't come across the specific problem i'm querying.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, with PC Suite 7.1.51.0, which runs just fine.
I intend to upgrade to the superb N8 when my contract comes to an end in 6 months, so i'm just doing my homework.
Apparently, the N8 will only run on Ovi Suite, NOT PC Suite.
Now if anyone disputes this and can convince me that the N8 works perfectly fine with PC Suite, then read no further, please just respond! (Bear in mind the OS i'm running though).
As nice as Ovi Suite is, i've managed just fine so far with PC Suite.
Otherwise, please let me explain the problem i am having:
I installed Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23. When i run it, it shows the main screen, and you can just make out a small window appearing in the middle saying "Nokia OVI".
It is then that the program stops responding, eventually displaying the error message which reads:
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\...
This appication has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the appication's support team for more information.
Judging by the similar stories of Ovi crashing (not finding one where the program fails to open, though), i think it is related to the fact that i'm running Win 7 64 bit; but i could be wrong.
I have tried installing it in compatibility mode, then (failing that), running it in compatibility mode, all to no avail.
Is this a problem that Nokia know about? If there is an intended fix within 6 months, then that'll be fine.
Otherwise, do any of you clever people know any work-arounds?
Any further questions you need to ask, please don't hesitate.

Pinpointing the problem may be very difficult as Ovi-Suite appears to be extremely unpredictable.and getting Ovi-suit tu run an sync properly seems to be largely a matter of luck.
I have just set-up three brand new identical HP workstations for our Geo-Information Department.
All were set up from the same disk image with only Win 7 Pro Office 2010, then directly Ovi-Suite as our Geo-Information guys insisted on Nokia handsets against our advice.
On one, machine Ovi-Suite crashed on launch and was unable to run at all.
on the second, Sync to OL 2010 failed consistently.
ont the third, everything ran fine with an N97 but an N8 was not recognized
So i got curious and run tests on one machine: I installed the same disk image a total of six times (clean win7-64, clean Office 2010 3 times, Office 2003 three times)
Office 2010
the first time i had the crash on launch, second time OL2010 sync fail, third time it ran ok.
Office 2003
First time notes sync failed, second and third time all was ok.
So the issue is definitely with Ovi-Suite and it appears to be pure luck whether is runs or not and if it runs at all, whether it syncs or not.
Syncing OL 2010 seems to be much trouble prone than OL2003, 64bit appears to be much less stable than 32, onb win 7 it seems to have slightly fewer issues than on XP.
We have NO issues with any other sync software (Palm, BB, Fruit, S-E, Microsoft, even Nokia PC-Suite).
None of the software is run with admin privileges (as we just do not give admin rights to users). If software requires admin rights to be installed, it is done by Data Center employees.
I'm afraid one's best bet to get Ovi-Suite running is trial and error, or if the handset supports it, use PC-Suite, which is what we do.
Ovi-suite users, according to our logs, generate over 70% of our smart phone related support calls, even though they are only 6% of our smart phone user base.
As a result, we currently have all Nokia handsets that do not work with PC-Suite and require Ovi-Suite blacklisted in our organization, meaning we won't support them in any way. Installation of any flavor of Ovi-Suite is prohibited on user PCs as long as it does not become more stable, reliable and less of a resource hog.

Ovi suite problems

My husband decided to sync his E63 on my computer. Since then, i havent been able to sync my n97 mini, as every time i have I've ended up with HIS contacts etc. I really want MY sync stuff back. HOW do I get rid of his stuff on my computer so that I can back up MY stuff?

The ovi suite thats supplied with the phone is a bit unreliable.
Try using PC suite instead or the new ovi suite beta.

Help me !! Ovi Suite 2.2.0.241 can neither be inst...

The upgrad of the OVI suite 2.1 to version 0.241 caused a Vista installation and
a win7 installation to run in problems to recognize a nokia 5800.
After the update: neither the ovi suite 0.241 of the vista OS nor the win7 OS
could recognize the nokia 5800 any more.(driver could not be installed)
I de-installed the ovi suite on both systems and tried to re-install again.
I managed this on the win7 system ( to do this i had to clear all nokia folders and also clean
all registry entrys of the ovi installation).
Finally the re-installation of the ovi suite 0.241 on win7 OS was done.without problems
The great problem is the vista system.
i also cleaned the whole system with entries of the ovi-suite, nokia installation,folders
registry and so on.(i used special software to to this professionally).
Now the following problem resists:
If i want wo install the new ovi-suite i get a screen either to repair or to de-install the
ovi-suite.
Both possibilities lead to an error code 1610/1612.
So i can not install and i can not repair nor can i deinstall the ovi-suite.
I feel sure, that i have cleaned all folders and the registry from the installation of the
ovi-suite 2.1
Please give me some hints what i can try more to manage the re-installation.
My ideas run out.

If you can't uninstall or upgrade your installation you can use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove Ovi Suite so that it's possible to reinstall it. http://www.filestube.com/2889cc34930c97e403ea/go.html . Microsoft used to offer this utility online, but have removed it. The file behind filestube link has Microsoft's digital signature so it should be safe to use.

Nokia 97 mini & Ovi Suite

Hi,
Need some help. Want to download apps to ovi suite/computer then update to phone. Primarily interested in Skype. Also have wifi but not sure how to download to phone using this instead of mobile phone network. Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
OVI Store application upon your N97 Mini should use Internet destination as default connection, so if you go to Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Destinations > Internet - is WLAN = Priority 1? (Options > Organise > Change priority).
Certain network branded versions will always use 3G connection to generate network traffic for provider however.

Older Versions of Ovi Suite

Hello, All I ask is that I want every single version of Ovi suite.
I began using Ovi suite at v 2.1.1.1 version and since then there were plenty of updates, I've saved MDataStore.db3 files when Messages reached 5k, I have 9 of them right now and can't open, cause something changed I put MDataStore.db3 file into C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Data Store\DataBase
but nothing happens.
I just want all the Ovi suite versions on filehippo... thanks..

Hi Svan,
if you wish to save text messages, you can import them from your phone into Nokia pc suite and save them in .csv format which opens quite easily in Microsoft excel. I too remember seeing the save message option disappear when Ovi suite was first released. However, Nokia pc suite is still available for download from Nokia and runs without conflict, even when Nokia suite is running.

OVI Suite problems with N97

Hi,
I have received my new N97 and installed the bundled OVI Suite.
All went well and it found and conected to my phone and I played with it for around an hour or so.
I reconnected later in the day and the suite would not start automatically as before or recognise the phone when i searched for connected device.
I have turned my phone on and off and restarted my PC but it still won't recognise the phone.
I seem to remember having this problem with my N95 and a version of PC Suite but that was a couple of years ago and I can't remember the solution (if there was one).
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ovi Suite Maps Download stops

Hello All,
i got the feeling or problem, that if downloading e.g. the whole europe (3,1 GB) or america (2,4 GB) map, the progress bar stucks at about 50 %. There is no progress after even 2 hours, I did even check 4 hours ... So I conclude that the transfer is stopped! However, the map file seemed to be downloaded completly on the pc (verified this by checking the network traffic in the firewall options). My N8 is connected via USB. So is it a usb transfer problem or some software issues? Any help here or someone noticed this as well?
I dont feel like clicking every entry on europe (about 42) and transfering it manually.
However, in general I got the feeling that the usb connection of the N8 is very slow.
In addition, I would suggest a way better progressbar in Ovi Suite Maps, that tells me the progress (something like X MB out of Y MB downloaded) in downloading a map file from internet, and uploading it to my mobile phone (also something like X MB out of Y MB uploaded, and in addition even a speed indicator - e.g. 3 MB/sek - so I know how long it will still take).
I also checked the update options of my mobile phone, but there I only can download single countrys, not a whole continent . Maybe a additional option for that would be nice, too.

Should not give any trouble..
I personally never had any problems with any updates till now... Not with OVI suite.. Not with firmware update.. Not with Maps update... touch wood...
so.. its your choice whether to take the risk (as you have encountered problem in the past..) but you can't get better without taking them too...
