N900 - refuses to switch on

I had been using my N900 for 2 weeks without any issues. I never updated the software. Last night I was trying to take a picture and opened the camera lens cover. Accidentally I pressed the power button instead of the camera capture key while trying to take the picture. The display went off. I also found the phone felt warmer than usual. I took the battery out, put it in and tried again. No success. This time the phone did seem to be getting hot. I took the battery out and tried several hours later. No effect - the phone wasn't feeling warm either. I tried both the USB and wall charger - the LED was glowing green, but the phone wouldn't turn on. Now even with the charger connected, the LED doesn't glow. Being a Sunday, I can't contact Nokia Care till tomorrow. Breaks my heart to think the hardware could get messed up so easily. We've had several Nokias in the family but not a high end one like N900. I've tried everything suggested in other forurms (including Maemo). I tried to update software with NSU. The NSU can't even detect the N900 when I connect it to the USB port. Probably suggests the battery is flat. I don't have a 5800 to try and recharge the battery externally - its shocking to know the phone can't charge if the battery is flat. If a laptop can why can't a "smart" phone? Anything else I can try?

I'd like to see what happens when you use a different, charged battery on your phone before I said for certain that it is dead.. but it sounds more like a hardware failure.. and those tend not to occur as a result of firmware bugs or pressing the wrong button..
It could be you have a duff device..
I've heard of loose magnets on the keyboard so it couldn't tell it was fully open.. power buttons that failed so the device would turn on then turn off again.. back cover sensors that couldn't tell the back cover was present (which means the microsd slot won't work) dead LCDs that have a single bright line and not much else.. GPS not working.. *MICROUSB PORTS FALLING OUT OF THE PHONE*
the N900 doesn't have the greatest build quality and things can and do go wrong.. new firmware might not help your device, but if you can charge your battery and then it seems to work again, it might stop it doing this.. if it is a software fault.. which is might not be

my lapto hp 650refuse to boot, fan refuse to start but charging and the power light is on.... please somebody help i can afford to loose my laptop..........

Try a hard reset.  Take the battery out and unplug the power adapter from the notebook and let it sit without power for a minute.  Then leave the battery out and plug in the power adapter.  If it powers on, reinsert the battery and it should be fine.

  • Browser locale refuses to switch back to en-US

I was testing out my extension Context Search X in Deutsch, and when I changed general.useragent.locale back to en-US, all the extensions still have their ui in Deutsch. I have restarted Firefox many times already.

Maybe the browser caches the locale folder although I think it shouldn't. How do I make it refresh all the folders affected by the locale switching?

  • Itune 8 refuse to switch mode

    windows xp user here.
i just used itune before and i like the mini-mode.
i just upgrade to itune 8, run it, in minimode. i cannot get maximize the window. everytime i try, my computer crashes.
    please help

I'm having the same problem with Itunes crashing during startup of the application, but in my case Quicktime also reports a similar error when I try to start that application. I had instigated Genius mode in Itunes when I last used it after switching to v8.0
I've tried going to add/remove programs for both quicktime and itunes and the both report fatal errors when trying to re-install. The error quoted for quicktime had the code 2869.
Any ideas on how I could fix this? Thanks.

  • Ipod refuses to switch to manual download!

    Hello,
Even when I hold down the command and option keys continuously from the time I plug the ipod into my mac, itunes begins an automatic download. Help!
    Thanks

    Hi Jenny,
I have a similar problem, and posted it weeks ago but got no answer.
When I connected my G5 iPod after installing the new iTunes, I got a message that iTunes is 'updating the library on my iPod.' I was concerned that it is auto-syncing, so I force quit.
When I held down the Option-Control while connecting, it did the same thing. I even tried creating a new user, but same thing happened.
To add to the puzzle, I get a screen when my iPod starts the updating (before I force quit) that shows I have ticked the 'manage music manually' box, while it is updating my library. This never happened before.
When I connect my iPod to a PC this does not happen -- I get a dialog box that I can "Cancel"
Is updating a library different from auto-syncing? I have never auto-synced because my songs are on 2 different computers.
Does iTunes ALWAYS give you a warning before it erases ANY songs on iPod?
I hope someone out there can solve this puzzle. I would like to update my iPod software but cannot do it without iTunes, so its a Catch-22.

  • N900 dead

Please excuse me if this topic was already discussed, but i have followed these other ones and none of them was exactly my case:
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=topfaq&thread.id=168
    /discussions/board/message?message.uid=589647#U589647
I have received this week my new N900. Everything superb until last Friday when I was in my car listening music through the A2DP profile (stereo bluetooth), received a call, was using also 3G and all this meanwhile the N900 was plugged to the car charger (borrowed from a N97). That was quite usual with my HTC Diamond. But suddenly when I left the car the N900 bricked, so I restarted but since then the only thing I could see is the NOKIA logo with the white wallpaper.
Later at home i tried to remove the battery, put it back again, plugged to the adapter and i could see a small usb logo on the right top corner. Then I followed the guides found here to flash und update the firmware (flasher-3.5 and so on, with my windows 7 pc). First I reinstalled the latest firmware file (.bin) and it seems to be OK, with no error comand. Then I rebooted the N900 but the result was the same, it stopped 30-40 segs later and switch off. I though it was also necessary to do the eMMC, so i repeated following the new steps, but in this case i found these messages from the flasher:
    -USB not found
-USB raw data transfer EP found at EP2
-SU_GET_UPDATE_STATUS_REQ terrminated with error code 1.
I have no idea what do they mean but the case is that now I can see no usb logo on the top when I plug the usb adapter (either USB or AC), so it is now impossible to comunicate with the pc. I have tried again to remove the battery, even in a Nokia center with another battery from the 8500 which i didn't know was the same, but no result. The most strangest thing is that the N900 refuses to be charged as once it is plugged to the AC, a yellow light appears and on the screen I can only see the nokia logo on a dark backlight (as I said, with no usb logo now), but 30 segs later it is continously switching off.
I am already mentally prepared to ask Nokia for a replacement, but I still resist to accept there is no solution to revive this little but complex device.
Thanks in advance for your help.

As cpitchford  mentionned it, the N900 does not behave well with a low battery. I've experimented a similar problem a while ago when I left my N900 turned off for quite a while. It seems it did not like it as when I tried to load the battery again, nothing happened (even the orange charging light was off). I replaced the battery with a brand new one, and it worked again.
Today as I was using FonJoikuSpot on my Nokia 900 (I'm using this solution to get WiFi access at home using my unlimited data plan and it consumes a lot of battery), it suddenly went off. I could see the Nokia logo on the back screen of my phone. I removed the battery, put it back and tried and turned on my N900. Nothing happened.
The guy at the Nokia Care Point (not a Nokia employee) told me that my Nokia was dead. I explained that I had a similar problem in the past and it was fixed with a new battery. He just smiled at me and went to attend another client.
So I'll try and order a new battery (again...) and hope that my N900 will come to life again!
I'll keep all of you posted on whether this solved the problem or not.

  • WinXP-SP2 refuses to allow screen resolution above 640x480

I've had WinXP on a Bootcamp partition for more than a year, working just fine and used occasionally. Yesterday I booted it up & the screen resolution had changed to 640x480. I tried changing it back to the native resolution of my Samsung monitor (1900x1200) using both the Win control Panel "Display" and also the nVidia control panel. XP stubbornly refuses to switch to the higher resolution, even after rebooting.
Windows issues like this, appearing for no reason I can find, are why I bought my MP in 2008. Does anyone have any advice (other than giving up on XP)?

Sorry I haven't reported back in a while. I keep thinking of things to try but still haven't solved this issue. These are the things I've done:
    Booted to XP Pro, then:
    1. Went to Hardware Monitor & tried changing resolution in Display "Settings" menu. No luck. As soon as I clicked on "Apply" the setting changes back to 640x480 resolution. Re-booted into XP Pro with no change.
    2. Went to Hardware Monitor & tried the regular "Install Display Driver" routine with Windows searching for the driver. No luck. Still didn't change resolution after reboot & attempted resolution change in "Settings".
    3. Tried changing resolution with the nVidia control panel. I clicked on the correct resolution in the list, but as soon as the window closed & I re-opened it, the resolution had changed back to 640x480.
    3. Inserted original disk with driver for for my Samsung monitor & tried "load driver from disk". No luck. Same result - resolution would not change after reboot.
    4. Went to the nVidia website & found an update for the driver on my 8800GT. Downloaded & attempted to install. Windows reported something to the effect of "That driver is already present".
    5. Tried to make changes by booting in VMWare Fusion. The resolution reported there was higher than 640x480, (don't remember what it was though), but NOT the native resolution of my Samsung (1920x1200). Unable to use "Settings" to make a change.
I wan to avoid an erase & reinstall (read: "Hassle with both Windows & VMWare"), but I'm running out of alternatives. One thing left to try - Two years ago I got a program called Winclone & made a couple of clones of the windows partition, several months apart. I've never tried actually installing them (stupid!), but this might be the time. Whatever I lose in that process shouldn't be devastating, just annoying. Is there anyone here in the Forums who has used Winclone successfully?
Or is it just time to bite the bullet & let Windows go? I only use XP for generating fractal images & occasionally doing some 2D drafting with a very old version of AutoCad (v14) which I dearly love. Very occasionally I use it to access websites that won't work with Safari & Firefox. A small voice in me says that I should try "7" on my Mac because all the reviews seem to be quite positive, but I'm not convinced that the expense & hassle would be worth it.
Sorry this is so long. I wanted to include all the steps I tried. Thanks in advance to anyone with ideas or comments.

  • Battery refuses to work on Macbook Pro 15 " late 2011 model

Hi my Macbook pro 15" late 2011 model is just over a year old. This morning it refuses to switch on. It works with the charger plugged to it and although a green light comes on the report states there there is no battery. The battery icon has an X in it. Pease could someone help. I have tried resetting and shutting down.

  • 7380 keeps switching itself off

My 7380 keeps switching itself off - sometimes when its not being touched, sometimes when the controls are touched. It then won't turn back on. Taking the sim card out and putting it back on sometimes works, and the phone will restart, but not all the time. Does anyone else have similar problems?

I've had repeated problems with my 7380 doing the same thing. I received my first 7380 on 26th April and it only switched on twice before refusing to switch on at all. Orange replaced this phone and I received my second 7380 on 28th April.
On 9th June my phone started switching itself off. The problem's getting increasingly worse and now it doesn't stay on for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. So far I have been able to switch it back on again without too many problems. Orange have promised another replacement which will arrive tomorrow, but I'm extremely disappointed. If the next phone fails then I too will be demanding that Nokia replace it with a different model.

  • My iphone has switched itself off and will not turn on

Help!!!!, My I phone has switched itself off for no apparent reason today and now refuses to switch back on again!, hit has been working fine and is less than a year old.

Reset the iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

  • Recommend me an HDMI switch

I have an Apple TV 2 and a DVD player going into a TV with a single HDMI port. I have tried an automatic switch based on generally positive reviews on Amazon <http://tinyurl.com/3kufjjo>. I found that it simply refused to switch to the Apple TV while the DVD player was plugged in. Since it's a cheap switch, I'm happy to move on to something else, without wasting a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this one.
So, can anyone recommend an HDMI switch that has worked for them with this kind of setup? I'm feeling inclined toward a manual switch, but if there's an auto switch out there that is established as working well with the Apple TV, I'd like to know.
    Thanks.

So, can anyone recommend an HDMI switch that has worked for them with this kind of setup?
Only HDMI switch I've used was the Rocketfish from Best Buy ($99). I used it to connect Dish TVRO, BD, DVD, and TV to plasma HDTV. Chose this model as it included a remote control that allowed you to operate in either auto sensing or manual control modes. Worked well enough in the auto mode most of the time. Did have problems with power outages scrambling the auto sensing once or twice. Have since switched to Pioneer 1120 A/V Receiver which includes its own switching.
