N900 tasks soaking CPU and wrecking battery life

Hi,
I have an N900 and since new I have noticed that the battery life is awful - just a few hours + that it runs very hot.  After a brief investigation I have found a task osso-rss which is soaking the CPU. If I kill if the n900 restarts without it and is normal for a while, then the task restarts.
Does anyone know what this task is and how to get rid of it.  I am on that latest firmware 2.2009.51-1.203.2
Thanks
Simon.

Sounds like the RSS news reader. If you don't use it then just unsubscribe from any feeds, it might be set to update automatically so you can turn that off.
Either way it shouldn't be using much CPU, someone filed a bug report about the same problem. If you use it it could be worth reporting it there https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7835

  • Bug report: Calendar on iOS 5 Notification screen consumes constant CPU and decreases battery life

After upgrading an iPod Touch 3 and 4 to iOS 5 and customizing the notification screen to include the Calendar (synced to an Exchange account), the battery life of both devices seems significantly worse. Removing Calendar from Notifications returns things to normal. I suspect a CPU issue because of the following observed behavior: when the Notification screen is visible, the calendar items are observed to be re-ordering themselves near-constantly (the first item keeps getting added and removed indefinitely) and the smooth scrolling of the stocks notification at the top of the screen is extremely slow and stuttery. Removing Calendar restores the scrolling to normal; adding it back leads to the slow/stutter behavior.
I don't know if this is contributing to the overall battery problems with the iPhone 4S, but it definitely seems to be an issue for upgraded iPod Touches.
    I hope this is helpful.

Similar issue on a 3GS with iOS5. I found that this issue was related to an Exchange event that had been cancelled.  Removing the event stabilized the notifications screen.  Waiting to see if it improves the abominable battery life - I am recharging twice a day.

  • Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.

Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.  Any suggestions?

    As in, shortly after install?
Note after you install Mountain Lion it's likely that the Spotlight index will be rebuilt.  This will take some time and the machine will run hot.  After this completes, which could take 1-2 hours, things should return more to normal.
If they don't, I suggest running Activity Monitor and seeing if you can trace what is eating up CPU cycles.

  • I bought my 15" macbook pro i7 just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quick..at fully charged it says I only have 2:27 of usage time. I didn't pay for that-what can I do about it? I do have Apple care. Thanks.

I bought my 15" macbook pro just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quickly. This started maybe a month or two ago. Its hard to tell. I only noticed the rapid change recently. Fully charged it says I have 2:27 (2 hours and 27 minutes) of usage time...with about 50% screen and keyboard brightness.
I've checked inside system preferences and its cycle count is 261 and full charging cap is 6316.
I have apple care...is this something i can/need to take up with apple. You'd think if you pay the price for these machines you should get mroe use out of them.
ONLY A YEAR I'VE HAD THIS!
My PC lasted 4 years before the battery showed signs this dramatic of wear.
Any help is appreciated, im  new mac owner. thanks.

do you have a mbp with dual video cards? running the system with the higher end card increases the heat and also drains batt power.
i have the 1st gen unibody (2008) with an original removable battery of 311 cycles and 4453 charge. under normal use ill be happy to get 1.5hrs. the mac battery counter thing says i have 3.3hrs though (whatever). compared to me, i think you use your battery more than i do, perhaps its the reason why it degraded so fast in a year?

I upgraded my macbook pro from OS Lion to OS Mavericks. When unplugged, it heats up exceedingly and the battery life is extremely short. What to do?

Installation of the new OSX is very heavy hdd load, in addition spotlight reindexes all the files on your computer - it may be a few hours. If in the future will be the same macbook hot, you should contact your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider.
May be required to clean notebook cooling system.
You can also install any monitoring utility sensors to your mac  such as Hardware Monitor  and look at the value of the temperature sensors.

  • I got my iphone 5 3 weeks ago and the battery life is very short. It drains out very fast. Does anyone know if it's a problem with the iOS or with my phone? Because I'm a bit concerned

I recieved my iPhone 5 3 weeks ago and the battery life completely *****! After doing a few things and maybe using it for about 30 minutes the phone start overheating like crazy then the battery starts dropping very fast. Does anyone know if it's a problem with the iOS or with my phone? And is anyone else expierenceing these problems?

It sounds like you have an app that is incorrectly continuously using data and power... from normal use the phone should NOT be getting that warm... only constant video playing via data like Netflix for example would result in that...
I'd say that you should remove all apps in the recent app tray... tunr phone off... then once you power back on...
Hold BOTH home and sleep wake buttons together until you see a white apple symbol... then release both buttons...
This will ensure you have no apps running...
I've experienced a hang up with mail while out and about that has resulted in this on my iPhone as well... Once I performed these steps it was fixed... it seemed like it got stuck and that's what caused the warm phone and battery drain...
I notived that when it gets stuck (mail app that is) I will see the text connecting at the bottom and it never changes to "updated" like it should... this is my trigger that it's gotten stuck.
Have not really figured out what causes mail app to get stuck yet...

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • Ipod touch 2G overheats and loses battery life

recently purchased bookworm for the touch. I usually listen to tunes while playing most games. I noticed that when I do this with while playing bookworm the back of the touch gets hot and my battery life goes from hours to one hour. By hot I mean kind of uncomfortable to hold hot. Any suggestions?

One thing I can think of is to remove any case on the ipod when you are using so that the heat can escape easier. I notice mine gets pretty hot when I charge and I used to leave the case on and had a few battery-life problems because of it

  • IPhone 5 hotter than Venus and dreadful battery life after beginning to use photo streams?

You may be able to tell from the title i have an issue.
Set up the photo stream today after my bro in law shared pictures. Phone immediately heated up to ridiculous levels and my battery life has been dreadful.
I've had the phone since start of June and had good battery life and no issues with heat, done the ios7 update last week (with no problems) so I reckon the issue is with the photo stream feature but I'm no tech wizard.
I've done a few searches for an answer but not found anything.
    Any help would be great
    Cheers

i am having same problem lately with my Iphone 5 and IOS7. I see my phone gets very hot when using the camera (or the gps apps). but even when I turn the camera off as well as GPS, the drainage is growing and when it gets to 24% it shuts down !!!! dead, I connected to the usb cable and it started but showed 0%.... very frustrating indeed !!!! would I be experiencing same issues with the new 5S I ordered already ??
I see your comment about the "photo stream" - it sounds potential problem - I wonder if any other colleagues will bring this up as well ?!
I turned off the Photo Sharing - will see if it's better, I did not want to turn off the Photo Stream becasue I did npt want to lose all my stored photos in te Icloud.
is there something wrong with the camera ??

  • High CPU Usage and Low battery life

Hi to all, I have this problems, my cpu is always over 40% an battery life is short. Before I installed 10.6.2 my battery duration was 4 hours, now is 2 hours. I tryed SMC reset, but the problem is on the CPU usage.
This are Monitor Utility screen print.

Those permissions messages may be ignored. They are normal.
Because everything is OK in safe mode you need to track down what isn't active in safe mode that may be causing the problem you are having. Of importance are:
    1. Incompatible third-party extensions (drivers) such as may be used for third-party peripherals.
    2. Incompatible items located in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder or /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/ folder.
    3. Bad fonts located in the /Home/Library/Fonts/ or /Library/Fonts/ folders.
    4. Incompatible item in your Accounts' Login Items section.
    5. Corrupted caches located in the /Library/Caches/ and /Home/Library/Caches/ folders.
To test the corrupted cache possibility simply remove the above mentioned cache folders to the Trash (but do not delete) then restart the computer normally. If the problem is resolved then you can empty the Trash.

  • The cause of the whine, heating and short battery life.

It seems like we've discovered how we could fix the whine, heating and the short battery life.
If you take a look at /var/log/System.log
    You will find this line:
    localhost configd[37]: com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DynamicPowerStep load failed
Yes, that's right. Intel SpeedStep is not implemented in Mac OS X.
It seems like Apple wanted to implement it, either the engineer in charge of it was screwed up or apple was hurrying to get macbook pro released...
This also explains why Macbook pro has a higher battery life, runs cooler without whine on a properly configured Windows XP (with updated intel drivers and microsoft hotfix). On Windows XP, when the system is Idle, CPU is throttled to 1GHz.
    So we have two options:
    1. Get Apple to implement it correctly - but so far it doesnt seem like apple is really concerned about this issue. Or rather, they don't seem to care.
    2. Implement it ourselves - A guy called Cryptonome was trying to implement the proper power management for MacBook Pros on Mac OS X to solve these "CPU whine", heating and battery life problems, and he did have some fruitful results, but it seems like he's currently too busy or something to finish the implementation.
Unfortunately I am not a genius so I cannot implement anything like this... anyone?
    What do you guys think?

That's exactly what I am doing : expecting a solution from Apple. And you know what, Apple today released a new system update for the keyboard. This update is for all the MacTels including MacBook Pro. And guess the next thing... This update fix a power draw in the MacBook USB... Great... Oh, no, in fact not so great because this bug is THE bug that allows to stop the whine (through Mirror, etc)...
Is there anyone in Apple that tests fixes before to release them ? Do those engineers working on the whine fix have given a look to that patch ? I really hope that Apple is doing something, but releasing this Keyboard patch for MBP now can mean 3 things (IMHO) :
    - the whine patch is on the final steps and will be released soon, so killing the workarounds for the whine is not a problem,
    - or Apple has a partial (or even none) knowledge about this problem, and they should hire better engineers, because many people made a lot of discovers about this whine, not beeing engineers,
    - or Apple definitly doesn't care about this whine problem, and they will loose myself as a customer (and probably others).

  • Powertop reporting 100% PCI device usage, and poor battery life

I have Arch running on an HP Pavillion g4-1200tx laptop with these specs:
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i3-2330M 3 MB L3 cache
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory
AMD Radeon HD 6470M (1 GB DDR3 dedicated)
A vanilla install of Arch eats up the battery at around 28 watts.
After doing some power tweaks, mainly
    Installing and configuring tlp
    Activating the i915_enable_rc6
Disabling the discrete GPU with vgaswitheroo
and with the wifi/bluetooth radios off and cpu scaled to powersave, it consumes 20 watts and is uncomfortably hot.
    Powertop reports stats as follows:
I think this is because the PCI devices are at 100% use. But PCI runtime power mgmt. is active through tlp. I've tried laptop mode tools but tlp comparitively gives better results.
Here is the tlp stat output.
What should I do to improve the battery life and make it run cooler?

Oh! I thought it was so because PCI was at 100%.
    The GPU is disabled.
    # cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    0:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0

Also, it's not a desktop environment's fault (I'm running KDE); Same amount of power is consumed even when X is not running.
Is there a way to find out why the power consumption is so high?
How much power does Arch consume normally?

  • HT1430 I have the Iphone 5 and just recently updated to IOS 6.1.3 and my battery life is just not what it was with the 6.1.2.  I can start a day at 100% and in 6 to 7 hours be at 18%, (this actually occurred this past Monday) for no reason.

Hello, has anyone had problems with increase rate of battery life depletion?  When I say increased rate I mean loosing maybe 80% in a 7 hour time frame while using the Iphone for nothing more than checking weather or stocks?  This started after I went to the IOS 6.1.3.  Before I could easily get 3 days out of the phone. Now I am wondering if it will hold the charge before I get home from work.

    Hi imobl,
Thanks for your response, I forgot to add that the five 3uk sims we have in use, I have tried all of them none of them are recongnised non of them have pin codes, I even purchased four more sims Tmobile (original carrier) Vodaphone, 3 and giffgaff.
