N900 Vs. iphone

I have been a die hard fan and user of Nokia since it launched 5110 in around 2000. Since then I have used almost all the top models from Nokia. The only phone I liked really were 6610 & E 71.
I got N900 and try to convince myself eveyday that its the best phone or internet tablet I have ever used.
But today it disappointed me very badly. My mate is a big fan of iphone and we always have argument which one is better. I always said N900. But today when he was with me I tried to open Many/all apps eg telephony, calendar etc. But it took tallest 30 sec to open any apps. And made me feel so embarrass. I discos from 3G , no apps running in background, but opening any apps taking so long is unacceptable, even after overclocking @ 900Mhz. I have used the iphone 3GS and its not bad at all. I know its made my apps but this is what we want afterall. isn't it. An app which can show a timetable of train/bus in 10 secs rather than opening full website taking 5 mins to do so. And many more.
I don't know what to say. I love N900 but I guess its not for use in public. Better use in private.
I know now many ppl here will jump on tell me to do this and that and tell me its all my mistake to buy it.
But anyone HONEST tell me if I'm wrong practically which one is better?

i don't have the probllem with the resistive touch screen either. infact i love it than capacitative. but the thing is now you go on any website and they have their apps made for iphone like banking, local stores etc. i know we can access full webpage but don't you think its more convenient to have the things in apps where you can do the things in few touches rather than going through the whole webpage.
my N900 sometimes takes ages to just open telephony (sigh). a yellowpage apps will pick your location straight away in the iphone and you just have to type the business name and here you go. you have all the info and contact and no can be dialed from the app whereas on our N900 its a very slow process of opening the web site then zooming it to fill the info of name and location than copying the no pasting in the telephony and calling. and if some how you loose the no than have to do the whole thing again. all the major banks in australia, India USA provide banking apps for iphone. allt he major airlins have apps for iphone. where you can check schedule, check in on iphone. you name any thing and they basically have an app. you go to another city and can order a pizza from dominos with that little app rather than going to the webpage and filling out all the details. it does have the apps for a common man which are needed for day to day business.
mbox where you can take a pix of a docs and save as pdf or send it as a fax or receive a fax direct on the iphone. docs viewer and editor app for which you dont have to pay anything whereas for our N900 it $15.00.
Microsoft was big b4 but since apple have got iphone in the market their worth is now 226 billions which says it all.
I'm not saying iphone is the best and N900 is not, but as a user of both the phones i think iphone got got more practical apps to be used on day to day basis than N900, but still love my N900.

  • Nokia N8 Flash compatibility with streaming video ...

Wondering why I can't watch streaming video sites like Justin.tv on my new N8 but can view them just fine on my E71.  When trying to watch a channel on Justin.tv, It states I must upgrade my flash player.  How can my brand new phone's flash not be compatible yet my 2 year old E71's flash works just fine.  By the way, I was using Skyfire on my E71 to view these sites and although you can download Skyfire for the N8, you can't access anything because it's not set up to work with a virtual keyboard...  I figured the N8 would be ready for any website out-of-the-box.  Talk about disappointed.

Hi, I've been testing couple of devices with the flash movie site Veoh. I've tested N95, N97, N900, Iphone 4,  and  7230 and one more older model of Nokia.  Only N900 and Iphone 4 worked well with flash videos on Veoh.com. No doubt, IPhone 4  gave the best experience with Veoh. It is the only recommend phone to use with that site.
All other Nokia phones expect N900 could not show the flash movies on Veoh.com. All Nokia phones were tested with original default web browser of  Nokia in out of the box condition. Now I'm figuring out how C5-00 Symbian 60 third Generation phone works with veoh.com. More on that at C-series section here. So far I can only recommend Iphone 4 for fun with movies. No secret any more what is behind the  Apple Inc.huge success.. Just like their computers their phone is excellent.
I will test C5-00 with the above mentioned skyfire web browser cause  it has the same OS as E71:
    C5-00
            * S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2
            * Symbian OS version 9.3

            * Size: 2.2"
            * Resolution: 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA)
            * Up to 16.7 million colours (TFT)
    E71:
        * S60 3.1 Edition, Eseries

  • Why no maps for algeria?

    i have nokia n8
    iam from algeria
and i  mouve always to tunisia
i use gps on n8 but ther is no mape for algeria and tunisia   ..why ??? i have google maps but its work bu connection
and if ther is any maps to can add it to nokia maps then i can use it gps free without connection
openstreetmap is this work on nokia ???

I personally made a similar question on facebook discussions of Ovi by Nokia. I asked the same thing that when the map of Pakistan is going to be available through ovi suite. They replied that the Nokia team is aware. They will start working on it after they get sufficient data about road maps of Pakistan. So, you just have to wait for it..
    here's that direct facebook link : http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=7213672274&topic=15825
And please every one, dont get too angry if nokia dosnt published any map yet. And if you talk about sales, Nokia's market is much more in India then Pakistan.
They even have their saperate Nokia company which is nokia India. They even support ovi music store. They create Nokia Mobiles them selves as made in India with a specific indian code. they also have managed ovi maps them selves with voice guidence.
If you wonder that Urdu voice guidance is available but not Pakistan's map. That's because urdu is also spoken in india.
So, we all should give some time to Nokia to work on it instead getting angry or change the whole phone, just bcuz of lack of Maps.
If you want it, get Google Maps.
And dont think i belong to india.  I m also a Pakistani from its capital, Islamabad.
Even If in whole Pakistan, people stop using Nokia. Its still not gonna change its highest market. It would be just a minor loss.
And other part is that Nokia is best in Hardware. like camera, sound, flash web browser even better gaming with N900 than iphone 3gs .. who will change his phone just for lack of GPS.

How is it that the full version is available for free for Android phones and not for nokia n8?
it's just how the developers decide to price it.
It was a similar situation with the N900 and iPhone, £1.50 on the N900 and £0.59p on the iPhone
Also, the Android version is Ad supported which is why it's free

  • How to transfer only contacts from iphone 3Gs to Nokia N900 phone ?

    Hello,
How can I transfer my all contacts from iphone 3Gs phone to Nokia N900 phone ? is there any way to deal with issue ?
    Thansk,
    PRANAJ

If you want to know how to transfer contacts from Nokia to iPhone. A computer is necessary.
First, you should connect your Nokia to the computer and then transfer your contacts to the computer. Then connect your iPhone to the computer, transfer contacts from computer to your iPhone.

  • The n900 can't die, it can do everything

Well alots of you guys lost hope in the n900, after everyone said that nokia "killed" it, really ??? look where the device is now,
you can get android 2.2 via nitdroid, you can overclock to 1 ghz in a push of a button, you can have up to 9 homescreens with desktop+,you can watch most of the flash 10 animations and videos on the web using 'tweak flash version', you can remotly control your pc via vnc viewer
, you can have remote xp !! via rdesktop, you can jailbreak your ps3 using your n900, you can run like 6 OSs on the same device (froyo, windows98, mac os, ubunto, eclair, donut, debian...),you can have extreme speed with the custom transitions in the blac plastic theme, you can do voice guided navigation with modtana, you can control your tv with irreco, .... and this is only a strat or an introduction to what can device really do,
the n900 is like 2pac, they killed him too soon, but we all listen to the 2pac rap, now after 16 years of his death,, most of the people still thinks that he's the best rapper ever, so is the n900, best smartphone/computer/tablet/thingy ever .
long live maemo5 and the mighty n900, it can do everything...
Reality is wrong....dreams are for real... 2pac .
don't forget to hit that green kudos

I wouldn't go as far as to say the best phone ever made..... not now. 6 months ago, maybe.
A lot of manufacturers have taken some of it's best features and only slightly improved on them. The screen for instance.... The iPhone 4 screen is actually only another 32 pixels per inch more than the N900, and others are still trying to beat the resolution but ending up with devices that could double up as surf-boards.
The web browsing, despite Flash 10.1.xx is still very cumbersome on some of the rival models, simply because at this moment in time Flash 10.1.xx is so buggy and troublesome as a plugin, I'm certainly not in a hurry to get it on my N900.
I'd say the N900 broke the mould, just like the Commodore Amiga did in the 80's. Anyone remember that one? It was the machine that started the high end graphics and 3D video editing race, it also invented the multimedia race. People in their thousands sold their PCs to buy the Amiga, because they got fed up of playing Falcon on a 4 colour display. In reality it "kickstarted" the home computer market.
As for the N900, I'll remember it as I remember the Amiga. The N900 has proved that Nokia can make a mobile computer, and in that respects it will be the device to compare other mobile computers. It's opened up the full web experience for handsets and it's driven the final nail into the coffin of the antiquated WAP service, thus dragging the networks screaming and kicking into the 21st Century. Some of them are putting up a fight with restrictions and blocks, but the more handsets we see with full web capabilities, the more they are backing into a corner.
The Commodore Amiga, and indeed the CD32 (the grand-daddy of the console market) have pride of place in the Science Museum because of their cult status. I think the N900 should join them for the same reasons.

  • MeeGo on the n900?

With Intel and Nokia working together on a new Mobile OS, where does this put Maemo updates for the n900 in the future?  It will start to come out in Q2 2010, so will it work on the n900 as it stands?

Slowly ramped down? I think you're under estimating Nokias ability to drop a current device like a hot potato!! It'll disappear over night!!
From the looks of things Meego is a fairly different beast to Maemo.. I expect some serious differences.. the package system is RPM (which I detest with a passion) as opposed to Maemo5's "deb" format.. so not only will the contents of packages be incompatible, you wouldn't be able to install them anyhow!
Of all the little side projects I have bubbling away (I'm doing some funky Maemo5 development on the train to and from work at the moment) I'm already anticipating dropping Maemo5 for Meego/whatever when the SDK is out.. I doubt we're going to see another Maemo5 handset, so honestly, what's the point of developing for it!!
The N900 is funky toy, and packages will be available for some time yet.. but it's not going to reach a saturation point.. not many developers will be "oooh.. should we support Maemo5 and Maemo6" when the next device comes out, especially when they might already be asking "should we support android, iphone, winmo 7 and maybe even S60/Symbian^3?" two Maemo platforms is just not healthy for anyone..
You could try selling it, but who'd buy something that might be end of life in 3 months.. or you could spend the time enjoying it and its quirkyness until the Nnextdevice appears and upgrade to that!
That's what I'll be doing (why do I keep giving Nokia money?!)
Who knows, maybe another manufacturer might make a Meego device that trumps the next Nokia device.. If Meego isn't Nokia only, other people might be making bigger better shiner devices (ones whose USB ports aren't held in place with luck)
Granted you might loose all the fabulous PC software Nokia provide by jumping ship... wait.. wait a minute.. none of their PC software works with the N900 anyway!!!
Still, it'll be interesting to see what happens!! I knew the N900 was a stepping stone so I'm really not fussed.. but at the same time, I can appreciate others might be seriously upset..
I bought an N97 with its pittyful internal flash storage.. less than 6 months later, the N97mini came out with double the capacity making the N97, for the first time, usable!! was a irritated.. very.. was I surprised.. not at all.. c'mon, it's NOKIA!!! It's what they do!!
Maybe intel will drag them kicking and screaming into some sort of order!! That'd be neat!

  • How to save the n900

yes nokia is making a big mistake killing the n900, come on, its not only the best device by Nokia, its one of the best devices ever, so i don't any idea why nokia is planning to kill the maemo 5, and leave all the n900 users with 10 apps from the ovi store, so i was doing some thinking and here is what you have to do nokia, first of all you will need to do something to win you some money and sell even more n900sbefore you revive it, so here is my idea, launch new n900s with different colors, lets say white, gray, the n97 mini colors, even a 2 tone colors would be nice, than start reviving the device, its not cool living a high resolution, 3d accelerator phone with that small number of apps, i'm not saying we want the meego on the device, but you guys should start working on putting the games we've seen in the ovi store( that rollecostar game...), and than we want that flash 10.1 on the device, and java would be nice, (go to www.mobile9.com and the n900s section is full of apps, but they r all java), and how about a decent section in the ovi store for the n900, its an open source ! the android is an open source, and it has 10000 times more apps than the n900, so yes more games and apps please, and i have a nice idea two, how about a n-gage section for the n900, for more games and apps, i mean if you guys started launching more apps and games on this great device, it won't heart, because first of all all these games will be supported on meego, so you will be saving some time, and second of all i'm not saying all the apps and games we want are going to be free, the n900 is a great device, the maemo5 is awesome, and the interface is amazing, and i will like to see that the ovi store now has google maps for the n900, nimbuzz for the n900, fifa 10, need for speed shift, asphalte, flash player 10.1 beta, fring, rollercoster, document editor, twitter, facebook for n900( a good one with chat and all that like on the iphone), opera mobile 10, a call recorder, snaptu, a clock widget, ea mobile games, .......... i bet nokia will make a lots of money out of the ovi store if they did this, and they will sell tons of n900s. so please nokia try doing something for this wonderful device.
Reality is wrong....dreams are for real... 2pac .
don't forget to hit that green kudos

    1. nokia dont make most of the ovi store apps. those apps are made by third parties and are then scrutinised by nokia before they hit the ovi store.
    2. n900 is pretty much entirely open source. if you want open source apps, go to the apps manager and download section.
    3. n gage games arent really that great.
    4. facebook... just use the actual page, you can do everything you can do on a pc.
    5. there are call recorders and clock widgets in the apps manager sections. abi word is in the extras devel (or the other section)
    6. and half of those apps youve mentioned would need to be created by their respective companies, or a company that has the licence to redistribute them, like gameloft. last time i checked, nokia doesnt own fifa, of need for speed, so they technically dont have the rights to it.
and flash 10.1b is extremely buggy, especially with hardware acceleration enabled. perhaps it will be ported once they fix the bugs.

  • Unable to connect to wireless Network Iphone 5

I just bought the Iphone 5 two days ago. I am having a lot of issues connecting to every other network but my own network at home
At home I am using a N900 Cisco Router. The security settings on it are WPA2, My verizon carrier update is version 13.3 and I have updated to IO6.0.2. I have reset the phone to factory defualts, I have reset the network, I have powered off the phone and done everything I could to get them to work on this network.
Personal. Now I have been to my girlfriends parents and many other places that are public and even after double checking the password. the Iphone 5
    From Trouble shooting:
I have noticed that the Iphone 5 doesn't seem to like many security options on the routers. Even on my new router I tried several different security options and it seemed to like WPA2 the best. Othrwise I was getting major issues.
The iphone would connect sometimes only to be slow and not connect. The wifi signal would keep being scanned and would go out and come back in. The signal strength also qould keep fluctuation even when near the router. My brothers same andriod device was doing the same thing. My brothers Iphone 5 was doing the same thing when using the different networks.
Apple there is a major problem here that needs to be addressed when refering to wifi. Considering most carriers now charge for data it is important that if I have access to all the wifi networks I can connect too. This is a major issue that needs to be resolved and looking at the forums it is not an isolated incident.
Recomendations: People who call in with this issue, need to have phones replaced if not able to patch, Since no patch exists at the moment, it would be prudent to offer people who are having trouble a credit towards their wireless bill by working with cell providers and to have apple issue a version of an RMA number. Until the issue is resolved. I have 17 days to return my phone to verizon and I am going to wait to hear back. My girlfriend is in the market for a new phone and we can't have issues with a wifi connection especially when charges are going to ensue if we go over our data. Plus the unavailability of a network in areas my cell provider is not able to help with is important. We as apple users need immediate attention to this matter and it is not a matter of how the phone scans for networks. It is an issue with connectivity and how it is communicating with certain encryptions with the routers. Fix need asap.
This issue is also not localized to the Iphone 5 as it is happening on the Ipad 4

Hi, I have the same issue as you with my iphone 5, when i connect to my router at home I only get less than 1 megabites, but with my other iphones (i4 and 4S) don't have this problem, I can get up to 15 megabits. I sent my i5 to apple care and they said that my phone is ok and returned it to me without fixing it.
I live in Spain, so it is possible that in ihe US Apple is more carreful with its customers and will fix this problem!!!

  • Which is better, Netgear N900 or Airport Extreme?

Which is better, Netgear N900 or Airport Extreme?

    Gpcn,
I'm going to highly recommend the new Airport Extreme. I've been having all sorts of wifi and networking issues because of the saturated 2.4 GHz spectrum in my surrounding neighborhood.
I finally bit the bullet on friday night and purchased the Airport Extreme. I could not be happier!
I used to top out at around 8 Mbit/s download and 1 Mbit/s upload with my older Linksys setup. Now i'm getting 40+ Mbit/s and 2 Mbit/s respectively.
Not only that, but i'm no longer dropping my wifi with my devices (latops, iPads, iPhone, etc). It's very consistent and the speeds are amazing!
Sure it may be pricier than others, but it's worth every penny. The setup is very easy and you get Three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices as well as built-in NAT support for security. You are better off getting the Airport Extreme.

  • Reading emails sent from iPhones on Nokia N8 Belle

My phone works well and receives "normal E mails" and attachements.
However E mails sent from iPhones display the header and any attachements, photos or security/copyright message.
My complaint is that the text of the message is missing. Once downloaded there is no option to refresh
or download again. I do not remove messages from the server with the mobiles only with the PC.
When message is fetched by a PC the text is there. It also arrives on my N900.
I could not find mention of this in the discussions.. Thanks in anticipation.. Nokpiks

If you don't want to install what is offered, you can go to SW updates > tap on three horizontal line icon at bottom right of screen > Settings > Auto-check for updates = OFF
You also need to temporarily turn off mobile data and restart to remove the notification.

  • Transfer photo tags from N900 to N8

    Hi,
the title says it all. On one side you have the N900 with photos taken and tagged and on the other you have the N8 where you want to transfer the photos with the tags.
If the photos are just copied to the N8, you will not have the tags recognized for some reason although the tags are to be found in the EXIF, checked some photos copied in the N8 from the N900 and they all have the tags in it.
Creating the tag afterwards in the N8 does not help either.
    Any suggestion welcome.
    Best regards,
    Max.

Use Image Capture app to upload photos and transfer them to any new or existing file or location. You can set IC to remove the photos from iphone or any other camera cards after transfer. After previewing and deleteing unwanted photos, transfer good ones to iphoto or other app. I clear my cameras quite often after taking 100s of photos each day. Enjoy.....

  • N900 Software support is shockingly bad!!!

Nokia. Why release a phone with no/very little software support? It's been about 4 months since the release and it's still not much better!!!
I replaced my Iphone with the N900 because it's meant to be an Iphone beater, but the truth is looking sadly the opposite.
Nokia Map loader is not working and the PC Suite has bugs and it's complicated having to switch between PC Suite mode and Mass Storage mode. What's happened to my free Navigation?
Come on Nokia this is embarrasing, I absolutely love this phone and I want to recommed it to my friends, but with the software situation that's not a possibility.

    N900 Personal Review
Hi all, I would like to make some comments about the New Nokia N900.
    Shortly the phone SUCKS!
I have been a Nokia user for about 10 years, and for the past 3 I have been using the NSeries, I started 3 years ago with the N95, then moved’ on to the N96 an now as you can see I have had the chance to use the N900 even though my original plan was the N97. The reason for this is that I contacted my provider (T-Mobile UK) as I was due an upgrade, and was told that they didn’t do this handset directly, but I could get this phone if I did the upgrade though Carphone Warehouse (Don’t even get me started on them) any way I contacted Carphone Warehouse and told them that I was due an upgrade and wanted the N97, the idiot on the phone started telling me that the N900 was much better and that it was faster and all. I told him I would have a look into it my self, at least to read some comparisons online. After having read the comparison on several sites, on “paper” the N900 sounded much better, faster processor (N97 is about 400Mhz, N900 is about 600Mhz), more RAM, the use of a Linux based OS and so on, sounded great, I accepted the upgrade with 14 days exchange if not happy.
Well I have used the phone for about 3 days, and let me tell you what I think…
The device is not as fast as people say, you would not think that there is about 200Mhz speed difference between them and that the N900 has double of the RAM then the N97. Yes it does allow you to open several tasks at once, but the CPU drain off more demanding applications is definitely noticeable, for example when running a YouTube page in the background with a video playing and opening other apps, the music temporarily stops just like the N95/N96 did/do.
The fact that it’s a new mobile technology makes it also not very popular right now and there is lack of application unlike the Symbian OS used by the N97, even Nokia them self are not up to speed, the OVI map on the N900 is version 1 point something and is really useless, unlike version 3.03 (3.04 BETA out too) of the N97 (don’t forget that I am using the N97 as a Symbian comparison).
The firmware upgrade is very complex for general users, this includes having to use a Flashing Tool and command lines, I had some issues at the beginning and I am an IT technician. The NSU (Nokia Software Update) didn’t detect the new version available even though the phone was delivered with version 1.x and the version available was 3.2x.
Even the phone “Hard Reset” is complicated, once again you have to use the Flashing Tool and download an other file called EMMC that should technically erase the 32GB memory, but be were, after having used this file my contact were still there and some other information were there too such as my OVI e-mail account and my SKYPE account details, there was also a file from the sketch software that had not been deleted and had to do so manually.
Talking about SKYPE, many sites when comparing N97 to N900 state that the N900 has SKYPE and some other software unlike the N97, well I use to use SKYPE on the N95, it may not be inbuilt but no one says you can’t download it, I use to have SKYPE Lite with many more features then the “messaging” SKYPE inbuilt in the N900. I also use to have 3 different versions of Opera, Windows Live messenger, the IPlayer application, an application provided by SKY TV to control TV listing and Remote Recording, Google Map, Google YouTube application and much, much more, most probably you wont find half of those for the N900, but you don’t see anyone stating that anywhere.
The N900 also lack the option to create folder to organize your applications, any application is “plonked” with the rest in a random order and there is nothing you can do about it, apart from creating a short-cut on one of the 4 useless screens and try to organize it that way.
It also seem to lack the use of the SIM contact option, all you can do is copy from the SIM but not use the SIM storage, now my SIM allows me to store 200 contacts, this would A) save memory on the phone, and B) be used as a back-up of the numbers. I normally use it as B, I back-up the numbers on the SIM (apart from the PC) because the SIM does not die as easy as the phone, lets say (and this has happened to me before with the N96) that the phone drops in the bath, the phone would most probably short and die, but if you had the numbers on the SIM you can move to a back-up phone no problem, same as if you drop the phone and it brakes.
An other issues I had with the N900 is that when you create short-cuts on one of the 4 desktop, you cant align the items, so you may have one up, one down and so on, you would think that they would have a snap to grid or something, but no such thing.
The battery is worse then any phone I have seen, I have lost a “line” while playing only 2 YouTube videos over 3G network hardly anything else running, now the videos were about 3 to 5 minutes each so lets say I lost a battery “line” in 10 minutes, I guess with-in 1 hour your battery would be flat.
The battery charger is not a standard Nokia one (pin) but it uses the same socked of the USB cable, maybe they run out of money while designing, who knows, the only good thing about the charging is that you can charge it while connecting to the PC via USB.
The keyboard misses the mouse pad that we have on the N97, and even thought the device supports on-screen keyboard too, I have noticed that many of the application only support the normal slide-out keyboard, application such as the OVI map (while using the search address option).
The messaging options are very limited too, IM and SMS is all included in an option called conversations located in the main menu, as far as I have seen you are also not able to select multi items when trying to delete them, and this does not only happened in the “conversations” section, I had to delete all the inbuilt songs 1 by 1 and several other files 1 by 1.
The camera options are very limited too, and the picture quality is very poor as far as I can see, I have taken better pictures with the N95 2 years ago.
There seem to also be a limitation when trying to edit website short-cuts name on the desktop, the name is basically what ever the site owners use as a title for the site, for example YouTube uses “YouTube – Broadcast Yourself” and that’s what the phone seems to use as a desktop short-cut title.
The 3G seem to also run slower on this device, web-page loading time between this phone and the N95 seems to be slower more then faster.
And this is what I have discovered in 2 and a half days of using the phone, I don’t even want to imagine how dissatisfied I would have to be if I had to keep this phone for 12/18/24 months, luckily I have the 14 days to exchange and will contact Carphone Warehouse in the morning to arrange an exchange for the N97, I have already taken my SIM card out and placed it in a spare N95 I have at home, that’s how quick I want to get away from the device.
My general advice would be to stay away from this phone and technology at least for now, and not to always believe what is stated by device specs on “paper” as sometimes it’s not all as expected.
This phone reminds me of a scene from the film “Bad Boys 2” when Will Smith is driving the black Porsche with Martin Lawrence.
Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence): You mean, y'all paid, what, $80,000 for this car and you ain't got no damn cup holder?!
Mike Lowrey (Will Smith): It's $105,000 and this happens to be one of the fastest production cars on the planet. Zero to sixty in four seconds, sweetie. Limited edition.
Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence): You damn right it's limited! No cup holder, no back seat. Just a shiny **bleep** with two chairs in it. I guess we the balls just draggin' the **bleep** along.

  • N900 so close but so far

I am so frustrated with Nokia.  I have the n97 and whereas I find it reasonably functional - as many other users I have found it to be full of bugs and annoyances which Nokia seem unable or unwilling to address.
So I have been waiting on the n900 to be released because it really does have the hardware to do it justice.  I have watched a lot of videos and read a lot of reviews on the n900 (as I did with the n97) and I just feel so "meh" about it - which I actually find quite sad.
I am a big supporter of FOSS and GNU/Linux so firstly the idea of Maemo is appealing to me.  It seems on the most part Nokia have got it right - but then we come to the big problems...
Why no capacitive screen????  This is the one thing which is likely to force me NOT to buy the n900 - the videos I have seen show the resistive screen really seems to destroy the n900 user experience - why Nokia?  Why have you completely destroyed what should be a great piece of kit by going with a resistive screen?
Second, the portrait mode issue.  I have to say i rarely use my n97 in portrait mode but I do use it and to have that prospect removed is actually very annoying.  I know they claim this will be fixed in Maemo 6 but surely it could be fixed with a patch for Maemo 5 instead?  XRandR is very mature, there doesn't seem to be any logical reason to me as to why it has not been implemented correctly in Maemo 5 (or ported to whatever GUI system Maemo uses (I am making the presumption it uses a form of X)).
So as the title of this thread states - they came so damn close to producing the device I really want - but the two major problems I see with it are likely to stop me buying it and waiting for something else.  I hear Archos will be launching a new PMP/Tablet in 2010 which also offers cell capabilities, it will be interesting to see if they address the issues raised by the Nokia n900.

I had a play with one in the flagship store in NY and actually think the experience is pretty good, certainly more like what the N97 should have been. I agree with you that the choice of a resistive touch screen is a poor one and also that it's crazy for Nokia not to fix the portrait issue before release of this device, it certainly makes the device feel like a stop gap until they release a Maemo 6 device. Two other issue that I had were the choice of 3G operating frequencies where it only works with T-Mobile (which seems to be a pretty unique combination of 3G operating frequencies) and that the build quality of the device felt very plasticky. To be fair this last issue could be restricted to the preproduction models only, I certainly hope so.
After my experience with Nokia and the N97, I would suggest to anybody considering the N900 to wait at least a couple of months to see how the device performs, if there are any game stopping bugs/flaws, and that the device has the appropriate compatibility (like Mac OS X syncing). Don't make yourself a Nokia beta tester bunny.
