N91 firmware update & Live 8 Videos

Hi,
I want to preform a firmware update on my N91, but I am worried that I might not be able to play the Live 8 videos that came with the phone if I do so.
I have backed up the memory (but not the hard disk) using PC suite, and copied the .dcf files from the hard disk to the PC. Is this enough to ensure I keep them, or are they stored somewhere else? Will I lose them when doing a firmware update?
Thanks,
Martin

Hi
Yup. 2.10 seems to be now rolling out (it will probably take about 2 weeks to get to all countries and operators like 2.00 did).
I bet this resolves the issue with some 3rd party applications not running, sms slow down etc
I loaded it and actually bought the BestTaskman (because so many people talked about it) and it works (it a good app too)

  • N91 Firmware update...?

    My Nokia N91 has firmware version V1.00.028.34 (29-03-06) RM-43 but after browsing through the forums i see there is a version 2, dating back to last August. But when i try to update the firmware via the Nokia website, it says there is no new firmware upgrades available. Is there anywhere else i can source version 2 from?
    The old text delay keeps settling in after a while, resulting in me having to back up the hard drive, and format it, which resolves the problem for a few weeks, then happens again, along with "memory full" to which i try a hard reset/format on the phone's memory, but get no results.
    anyone help?
    ~~~Kinnes~~~
    No, unlocking will not make it possible to upgrade actually.
    The product code is what makes NSU recognize the device,
    Some have said that it's possible to change it (in some service centers), but that this will/may invalidate the warranty.
    Sorry I don't know what else that can be done.
    640K Should be enough for everybody
  • N91 Firmware update with Mac OSx
    How do you update firmware on the N91 with a Mac running OSx (Tiger)? Any help much appreciated!!!
    You don't, I'm afraid. At least not by yourself or without a PC with Windows, as the update software is Windows-based.
    You can take your phone to your nearest Nokia service/repair center, though:
    http://www.nokia.com/repair
    Or you could find a friend, relative or colleague with a PC running Windows.
    You can try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and see if that will let you restore and remove the jailbreak:
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/06/24/iphone-dfu-mode-explained-and-how-to-enter-dfu-mo de-on-your-iphone/
    Some jailbreaks cannot be removed and in some cases will permanently disable your iPhone. If that happens to you, then you will have to buy a new iPhone; Apple will provide no support, warranty or out-of-warranty, for a jailbroken iPhone.
    You're on your own from here. We can provide no further help with a jailbroken iPhone in these forums.
    Good luck.
  • Firmware update incomplete - now no video!
    A friend brought me their flat panel iMac after a firmware update went wrong. They said the instructions were to hold down the power button until the bar appeared, which they said they did. But now iMac displays absolutely no video. I can hear the startup chime, I can hear the hard drive churning along like a champ, but absolutely no video! I tried rebooting the iMac with an original Leopard disk - nothing. I'm now in the process of reinstalling Leopard via target disk mode but something tells me that isn't going to solve the problem either! Because as strange as it seems there was video in target disk mode either. Just a black screen and the white light to tell me it's on.
    My questions:
    1) Is it possible to fix this firmware update?
    2) Can the firmware be overwritten or undone?
    3) Can any of this be done via target disk mode?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    The little information that you are giving us is not much to go on. This is the Intel Apple Discussions forum. Usually Intel iMacs are not referred to as flat panel. The flat panel iMacs were G4 PowerPC iMacs. But if this is an Intel Mac, then there is a firmware restoration CD that can be downloaded from Apple Downloads, burned to disk and used to restore the firmware on an iMac with an interrupted or unsuccessful firmware update. The CD image can be downloaded and burned on a PPC or Intel Mac, but these can only be used on an Intel Mac to restore the firmware. The link is for Firmware Restoration CD version 1.6, but if the iMac you need to repair is not listed, use the links to go to version 1.4 or 1.3 to get the correct one for the model you need to repair.
  • Desktop video firmware updater running my MBP at Full Capacity
    Hi guys,
    I don't know what I did, but my MBP 13" Retina Display is running at full capacity with fans at full! When I go to check in the Activity Monitor it tells me that the "Desktop Video Firmware Updater" is running 97% of my CPU, How do I make it stop o fix this? Thanks!
    When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
  • Firmware update for n91
    My nokia software updater tells me there are no available updates for the n91(current versio 2.00.052), but i heard about a version 2.10.013. This version has issues with a few 3rd party tools which the later version does not. My product code is 0537293.
    I have an n91-5 RM-158 model. Is the firmware update out, and how can i update it?
    That is very strange.. I have the phone from India and the code is RM 43.
    And as of today the 2.10 is not yet authorised by Airtel atleast.
    Arun, what type of problems are you facing...
  • Installing N91 firmware on V1.10.030, RM-158, 19.0...
    Hi,
    I do not have internet access at home, so I saved the firmware from the Nokia website on a CD ROM in a net cafe to save on and to install from my PC at home.
    I do not know whether the firmware installed or not, as I never checked the version I had before installing. The N91 never displayed any messages and never showed any reaction to advise that the firmware had been installed.
    Can I install the firmware upgrade in this way and should it be successful on a PC without internet access?
    How can I tell if it were installed or not?
    Problems I encountered:
    Originally I was going to return the mobile to Nokia in the USA (I purchased my SIM free N91 from www.mobilebee.com), but MobileBee.com advised that my problems stemmed from the fact I had not updated the firmware.
    Nokia Europe told me I would have to return it to the USA where it was purchased, a cost which I would have to bear because of Nokia's shoddy workmanship.
    The problems I was encountering were:
    If I slid shut the music control panel over the digits panel during a call, the N91 would drop the call;
    I installed over 2 days and 14 hours of music (approximately 800 songs at 128kbps, AAC files), but noticed they were progressively disappearing, or displaying exclamation marks and not responding to "play" commands;
    I tried sending picture messages, but the hard drive was saying it was empty and/or no images were available.
    Incidentally, I think it is disgraceful Nokia is selling a product that is clearly not ready to perform the functions it advertises.
    Firmware updates are acknowledgements of failings in the original software of the product and the fact that there have been several over a short space of time is a damning indictment of Nokia's pursuance of profit and turnover over quality and customer satisfaction.
    In Ireland Nokia can be held accountable for misleading advertisements and claims about the product's abilities under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980. Let this be a warning for future releases of mobile phones.
    Hi
    I am a bit confused since your title shows RM-158 which is the GSM only version sold in China or APAC. Is thie mobilebee selling you APAC market devices? If so then when you update it will put the APAC or China Sw on it.
    1- Hanging up a call with the slide is how it works. However if you hold down the left soft key and close the slide it holds the call. Standard S60 slide action (see quick guide)
    2- AAC files. What did you use to synch the old Nokia Ausio manager or USB MAss storage.! Indicates the file is gone but the library has not been updated. Did you do a full synch that removed songs from the HDD but you did not refresh the library
    3- Update - In any event try this from a blog from a PC with internat access, it goes over the internet to get the sw for your phone
    I just upgraded my N91 with the official SW from Nokia and its GREAT!. Now I can update my own N91 when new Sw comes or refresh my device if somehow I screw it up:
    1) Make sure you have the latest PC suite (6.81)from : http://europe.nokia.com/A4144903, or other local regional sites.
    2) Install the Nokia software update application sw from http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate (note you need 256MBytes of RAM on your PC)
    3) Then program your phone
    a) Backup your phone memory (ROM) using PC suite (to preserve your DRM activation keys etc).
    b) Copy your files (Music, Videos, Documents, Images etc) from the device HDD to your PC (recommended to use USB Mass storage).
    c) Copy your applications, themes etc (original SISX, Java etc files before you installed them) from your HDD to your PC (Do not simply copy the installed directories/files over)
    d) FORMAT your HDD
    e) Proceed with SW update (note you need to be attached to a charger and not in offline mode. Do not answer or make call or disconnect the device during this process)
    f) Reset your phone memory by typing *#7370# (code 12345) (recommend this just to be safe)
    g) Restore your phone memory using PC suite
    h) Copy back your HDD contents from your PC to your clean HDD
    h) Re-install your applications/themes
    I have nad very few problems with my N91 so good luck
  • *** E51 GREAT PHONE BUT NEED A FIRMWARE UPDATE... ...
    Hi
    TO THE NOKIA FIRMWARE UPDATE STAFF:
    I bought that great phone NOKIA E51 but it needs a FIRMWARE UPDATE because the built'in camera gives photo(and videos too!) in VERY VERY "green" color that's too bad (MY OLD 6630 , so only 1,3 megapixel is best in photo quality against my actually E51..!)
    *** SO PLEASE REMOVE THE GREEN COLOR TENDENCY IN THE PHOTO! ***
    ANOTHER AND LAST problem I have noticed during mine along E51 testing is the integrate REAL PLAYER VERSION has VERY VERY big problems during *MP4* VIDEO PLAYBACK (MP4 VIDEOS MADE ON PURPOSE FOR MOBILE), VIDEO APPEARS In jerks (ESPECIALLY IN FULL SCREEN!) And SOME TIME IT BLOCKS DURING PLAYBACK!
    *** SO PLEASE A NEW VERSION OF REAL PLAYER IN THE NEXT E51 FIRMWARE ***
    FOR ALL THE REST THE E51 PHONE IS GREAT AND PRICE TOO (200€ IN ITALY), I BELIVE IT'LL BE A BEST SELLER -BUT- ONLY IF THE PROBLEMS I LISTED ABOVE WILL BE CORRECTED!!
    i got latest firmware version: 100.34.20
    Hi,
    I wrote to Nokia regarding this issue using the Nokia India site, and the Nokia for Business site. I also sent an email to [email protected]
    Here is the text of the email:
    Hi,
    I bought my Nokia E51 four days back, and I am VERY happy with the
    phone. However, I feel that there are some shortcomings with the
    phone, which need to be addressed by firmware upgrades. I am listing
    them here:
    1) The camera has a VERY noticeable green tint
    2) The video playback in full screen mode using RealPlayer is VERY
    slow and choppy
    3) In the "Missed Calls" part of the call log, there is NO way to
    determine WHICH number of the contact was the call missed - "Mobile
    Number", "Tel.(home)", "Tel.(office)" or what? The only way to
    determine is to call back using the same screen, which is VERY
    counterintuitive!
    You can have a look at some more people agreeing with me here -
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=communicators&thread.id=14028
    and the problem 3) described in detail here -
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=communicators&thread.id=15956
    Apart from these 3 problems, I am VERY VERY happy with the E51 - it
    lives up to all the promises it makes! Way to go, Nokia! I request you
    to address those 3 issues as fast as possible!
    Thanks and regards,
    I request ALL other users of the phone to please contact Nokia similarly, to have these issues resolved ASAP. If someone can suggest more ways of contacting Nokia regarding this issue, please tell me! Thanks!
  • N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's sup...
    Seriously don't hold your breath for too long... Nokia are truly awful at this, they treat the customers who buy their most expensive handsets with such apparent contempt it is nothing short of disgusting.
    I bought an N93 which was quickly superceded and completely forgotten about. To this day it is riddled with bugs and problems, as well as lacking so many features which were added to later models of phone when there was no reason other than Nokia not providing an update or releasing the software as individual updates.
    The N95 is not much different unfortunately. It is unstable and full of bugs, including frequent crashes, abysmal memory availability and management as well as annoying things like the the system ignoring key presses every so often. For all those people who don't experience any of this, lucky you! There are far too many people who do however...
    I'm sure some bright spark will come on here and point out in some way how I'm wrong, that Nokia are too busy working on new phones, that we've had a firmware update or two already for the N95 or something else. The simple fact is that Nokia are marketing the N95 as a computer, even to the point of the having the advertising slogan "It's what computers have become" but in fact they are treating it like a throw away mobile phone. Even Microsoft provide better and more frequent updates to their system than this! And that really is saying something!
    What a shame that they have locked down the system so much, there is a tonne of talent out there in the opensource community who could make this potentially amazing platform truly outstanding. Nokia sure as hell don't seem to have the inclination!
    When will you get your firmware...? It has been over 4 months now since they last updated the N95-1. I am beginning to get the feeling that this one has just been chucked on the heap as the N93 was... the parallels between the N93/N93i release and the N95/N95-8GB situation are rather strong. After 10 years as a loyal Nokia customer I won't be making the mistake of choosing them again!!
    The supposed October 28th deadline has come and gone. I have emailed Nokia 5 times and been ignored, for over 3 months now. I have called everywhere I can and get the stock response "we don't know that" or "we only get told that a few hours in advance". Assuming any of that is actually the honest truth, it makes Nokia look pretty poor in their organisation of information and product support.
    The sad fact is that even IF this firmware comes out, the chances of any further updates are extremely slim. Of course you could argue that there is a lack of commercial incentive for this. The N95 platform is so jammed full of technology that it has the potential to last for 4-5 years as a perfectly decent phone and mobile computing platform, with the right system updates of course. The industry makes no bones about the fact that it wants people to upgrade every 12-18 months, it's how they make their money. This is not conspiracy theory, just a sound bit of reasoning as to why we're not going to get a long stream of support for this phone.
    I read with interest that Google are launching an open platform and SDK soon. Much as I am wary of google, being the corporate giant that they are, this at least is the beginnings of a truly open platform which hopefully users will be able to work with and improve in the way that manufacturers like Nokia simply don't want to. That is of course until the phone manufacturers who move to this system lock it down like Apple have done with the iPhone and prevent free enterprise and development.
    I know we live in a capitalist society, but sometimes consumers are pushed just a bit too far. It is NOT acceptable, nor environmentally friendly to push out and make obsolete technology which costs as much as a reasonable spec entry PC once a year on us.
    I doubt Nokia will read this, even if they do it'll just go ignored like all the other complaints from the customers they have let-down like this.
    I'm sorry but "be patient" is just not sufficient here. It has been over 4 months and these are some MAJOR bugs in the phone.
    Let me detail my day so far with my N95, for those of you who are not familiar with these problems or who think that perhaps this is just a disgruntled customer who has an overinflated sense of importance.
    All of this is on an N95 replacement (the first one's earpiece broke) which I have had for under 2 weeks now. It is the latest firmware and there is NOTHING installed on it, it is as it comes...
    * Full charge overnight with the phone off.
    * Switch the phone on.
    * Check my emails (I was sent a small mpeg video (700k) which I download to the phone.
    - WiFi connection is lost 4 times and I'm within 3 metres of the aerial. N95 fails to find my access point for as long as a minute after losing the connection, when everything else in my house can see it.
    * Check FaceBook mobile in web browser.
    * Read BBC news headlines in web browser.
    - clicked on 3 minute news video headlines, realplayer loads up, runs out of memory to play the video. Realplayer closes, taking the web browser with it.
    * Try to play the video I was emailed. N95 doesn't support uber-standard MPEG files, so...
    * Browse the web again, searching for how to play the MPEG.
    - someone suggests renaming the file to .3gp to make RP load it. I'm dubious but it's worth a go. I go to the menu to access the file manager. I rename the file and click on it, still no joy.
    - I close the file manager and go back to my browser, except not - it closed without warning because the memory ran out (presumably)
    * I give up trying to browse the web and lock the phone.
    * I need to make a call. I press the buttons to unlock it and mess up the timing (my fault completely)
    - I keep pressing the buttons in quick succession in my impatience (which is just pointless I know, but I was in a hurry and fumbling with it).
    - Having pressed the buttons about 8 times the phone unlocks but the screen goes dark.
    - I press the camera focus/shutter button lightly to "un-sleep" the phone. It lights up for 2 seconds and goes dark again.
    - I repeat this 3 times and the phone switches itself off!!
    * The phone restarts automatically but once rebooted is slow and laggy, missing keypresses all over the place so I have to switch off then on again... it is normal (as normal as it gets) after this.
    * I go to my PC and write this!!!!
    Absolutely ALL of this is stuff the phone is supposed to do with its hands tied behind its back. I have not used any 3rd party software and never tried to use more than 2 applications at a time - the N95 IS a multitasking phone and so should handle a lot more than this!!!
    This behaviour was present on the previous handset too, on both the firmware versions it had on it during its life. My current handset came with an 8-point service engineer inspection saying it was in full health...
    Be patient? Even if I was prepared to mutely wait for 4+ months patiently whilst such dreadful bugs plague the phone, I am an N95 user who is concurrently paying off a contract on an N93 phone, costing me £200 ($400 US) in monthly rental for a phone which became unusable (due to signal issues on the network when I moved house to a different part of the country). Be patient? It is now about 14 months since I got the N93 and just over 12 months since the firmware was updated on that (I quote from the firmware date on my N93). Nokia dropped that one like a hot stone and completely screwed everyone who had bought it. Be patient? You must be kidding me! When Nokia, despite an all-singing-all-dancing website cannot ever be bothered to make even the most non-committal of announcements about firmware on it's own forums, why on earth should I be patient? I understand as a programmer myself all to well that things can slide and problems can delay things, but at this point I can't even find solid information to say there will be another update for this, let alone when it MIGHT arrive or what it will HOPEFULLY include... and as I said in my original post, I have telephoned and been fobbed off and had 5 emails ignored (not including the ones about the N93 which were also ignored). And yes, I did get the received message report from Nokia's own system saying someone would come back to me.
    I'm sorry to rant at you, I'm sure it's not your fault but be patient? Just not acceptable any more!
  • Lip Sync Problem AFTER LG Firmware Update on some HD Channels
    I have an LG HDTV, model number 47LH90, and I'm experiencing lip sync issues even after they gave me a firmware update to solve the problem.
    I've noticed the problem appears to be most prevalent on the History HD channel.  Most other channels seem fine now following the firmware update from LG.  Any reason why this is  happening?  I have a couple thoughts to add for Verizon personnel:
    1) The Motorola STB/DVR I have from Verizon let's me choose my output as 720p, 1080i, etc.  It would be nice if it would also allow a pass-through option to just be whatever input the feed is.  For example, sometimes I wonder if this issue is because the DVR is trying to take 1080i input to the STB and convert it to 720p output to the TV, which somehow changes data lengths and results in some lip sync issue.
    2) I have a PlayStation3 that I bought to use mainly as a Blu-Ray player.  The PlayStation Audio/Video to my TV using the HDMI cable works great, with no lip sync on Blu Rays, Hulu, games, etc.  I know this lip sync is sometimes more prevalent on LG TV's, but it would seem to me that if PlayStation's can produce lip sync-free content, surely FIOS can too.  Perhaps they could upgrade their hardware and use the latest standards.
    3) I'm using the same make/quality/length HDMI cables on my PlayStation3 and STB, HDMI 1.3a.
    I would love to see some updates that address this issue as soon as possible.
    1CoolMom wrote:
    We frequently have a similar/same problem but do not have a HDTV or programming. We have a  QIP6416-2 hooked up to a 12 year old Sony large screen TV (we won't buy a HDTV until Verizon gets a better, higher capacity DVR or until out contract is up and we can move on).  Often when we are watching a taped show (we tape almost everything) the sound and picture will get out of sync.  Think bad Japanese movie!  It makes me crazy as I read lips but my husband, although bothered, doesn't want to kill the DVR after a few minutes. We have found, by trial and error, that if we exit the show and then resume play the sound and picture return to normal. It also happens when we rewind on a currently playing show.  It happens almost every time I rewind a long ways (I do this when I watch 2 shows at once).  It is harder to get back in sync when this happens but it sometimes works if I watch and jump forward to be close to live and then jump between shows and only have to rewind a short ways.  I used to routinely watch 2 shows at once but now the aggravation factor makes me either tape everything or just not watch some shows I like.  I posted to let you know that it may not be the LG update and may be the DVR.  Try out my tricks when it happens, and if they work, I would blame the DVR.
    Thanks for the suggestion.  My problem actually seems to go away when the show is recorded versus live, at least sometimes, but not always.  Although, I've found that stopping playback, then resuming, or similar behavior can help the problem as well.  I just want my TV to work without having to throw salt over my shoulder.
  • Nokia N91 Firmware
    i Have a n91 and am very happy with the handset other than with one bloomin problem,
    my firmware version will not allow any sis or sisx file installation particularly with themes which is annoying.
    i know that nokia have come out with a new firmware upgrade in other parts of europe and my questions are this
    1. is it available over here in the uk yet?
    2 does anybody have a clue how to find out exactly where the service cemters are that can do the upgrade on site with in a few hoursplease don't recommend the search facility on the main nokia site as all it does is mainly bring up a lot of shops which staff have no clue how a firmware upgrade is done.)
    3.does it matter where you purchased the phone from and will it invalidate your warranty?
    ps like the layout of the forum and the easy way u can navigate the site.
    Like I said, the Themes or any other application has to be for S60 3.0 otherwise it will not work.
    Also you should install the theme in the Phone memory and not the HDD.
    Another thing I found out is that if the Theme is meant for the N80 it may not work with the N91, this is due to the different resoulution screen.
    I don't think that a Firmware update will fix this. Hopefully the Theme developers will test their themes in N91 and/or 3250 (same resolution).
    I've downloaded and installed at least three themes in my N91 with no problems.
    640K Should be enough for everybody
