N91 Hard Drive Tools

I was reading the user manual/help files in the Help menu on the phone and I came across the Hard Drive tools section, I read that theres many options, such as Defragmentation and other useful disk utilities.
But, I've checked my Hard Drive and I only have one option and thats the Format tools.
Does anyone have all the options enabled or just the Format option?

Hi Liam, while it is true that formating the HDD with Windows is different than the format in the device that doesn't mean it will break anything. With TWO big exceptions:
1. VERY IMPORTANT. The N91 DOES NOT support NTFS file format. This is the normal file format for Windows XP. IT supports FAT32 so you have to formal in FAT32 and not NTFS. IF you format in NTFS the HDD will cease to work PERIOD! So be sure to format in FAT32.
2. Also I found out is that when you format using the N91, the HDD gets folders created, but if you use Windows no folders are created.
Finally, it should be noted that HDD get fragmented over time and can get some errors so using "Error checking" and "Defragmentation" from Windows (selecting properties then tools tab). So these are useful tools to improve the performance of the HDD.

i know this is a bit if a dumb question seeing as the phone has not been released, but does anyone have a clue what sort of hard drive this phone will use? i mean, if it is like a 2.5" one then it can be removed and replaced with a larger one right? even if its a 1.8" hdd this can be removed to. think about what you could replace it with, a 40gb hdd? that would be sooo cool

N91 Hard Drive Issues

Ok so last night I was installing music to my N91 via bluetooth. The phone shut off and shut back on and when it did everything that was saved to my hard drive was gone! All of my music, images, apps vanished.
I checked the hard drive and the memory used is 846mb but I have no clue what is being used.
Have there been any other issues like this and if so is there a solution?

I'm actually doing that as we speak (or type). When I connected it I saw a folder with no name, just a dot (.). Don't know what that is but I get an error message when I try to open it.
I'm doing a scan and recovery. If I format the phone's hard drive won't that erase all of the data?

I have formatted my cell , but after that also it is showing same msg and only using ph memory.....

Did you also formatted the hard drive?
What is your FW version? *#0000#.
The latest is 2.20.008 on N91 4GB.
I guess the problem you have told was visible mainly on version 1.00 or 1.10.

N91 hard drive dissapeared!

Hi folks
can any1 help me.i transfered some music files onto my n91 and now the hard drive doesnt work-it was a bit dodgy before (in message settings,when trying to change from phone memory to hdd it would keep reverting back to phone memory)but now theres nothing showing up on the gallery,all the games have dissapeared-it still shows in memory details that memory in use is 3327mb and 511mb free memory-ive not tried to reset as there are resent video and photo files that i don't wanna get rid of!!(also when trying to link it to pc it doesnt bring the drive up!)

One thing you can try is to reset the phone using the instructions you can find in this post :

However please be aware that doing so will wipe ALL the data from your phone such as information in your calendar, contacts and so on.
In order to save your data you can use the PC Suite application to save and restore the data from your phone - this software can be found here :

One thing to note is that as part of these diagnostics, you should NOT restore any backup or install any software on the phone as you could be putting the problem back onto the phone.
If this doesn't work then it's likely you have a hardware fault and you should approach your local Nokia Service Centre to get your phone fixed.

Hi I have a problem I go to transfer music suddenly there was a power cut of electricity when I wanted enter into the music player I have this message can not access to hard drive replace the battery cover I followed these instructions but not the phone blocks

The n91 4GB wid firmware v2.10.013 does not have any hdd errors or problems becuase the firmware is stable if people who have n91 4GB wid firmware below v2.10.013 den dey are going to get a lot of hdd problems coz wen dey use format option on n91 it doesnt format da hdd properly n dat leaves it to faulty corruptions so hdd does not read correctly. so therefore your n91 8GB firmware v3.00.060 is the first firware for n91 8GB.
Try flashing it to other country variants eg instead of Euro1 try France. Euro 3. O2 network etc dey might have da fix for it.Message Edited by shayesta on 09-Mar-2007

Why Do I have a Question mark on my Hard Drive Tool Bar

I have a question mark on my hard dive tool bar, not sure why and do not know how to get rid of it, when I click on it it tells me the item can't be found, also I have a photo icon on the tool bar as well, I have added a screen shot, any ideas how to get rid of this?

To delete that question mark, just hold the Command key and drag it off the Finder, so that question mark will be removed. That's caused when the item you had there is deleted, so Finder doesn't find it and it shows the question mark

kinda sorta off-topic from motherboard stuff, but what the heck... not sure where else to ask.
Anyone have a link to a really good, thorough error checking scandisk type program, and a really thorough defragger?

I have found most tools/untils cause more problems then they fix. The classic example is Norton System Works. I have fixed many a computer with problems of the BSODs just by removing Norton.
The best option, especially with XP, is to use what is native to the O.S.

Help with installing new hard drive and transferring data?

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch mid 2009 that is running OS X version 10.6.8. The hard drive is full and I have a new one I'd like to install, but I am awfly intimidated. I'm hoping that someone could shed some light on kindergarten-style step-by-step instructions on how to make the switch. I'm mostly concerned about the data transfer part. I've found a handy video about physically installing the drive, so I think I'll be ok there.
Here are the items I have in preperation for the switch:
• 1.0 TB Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM Hard Drive
• Portable bus-powered USB 3.0 storage solution (to turn my old hard drive into an external hard drive)
• Tools including a small phillips screwdriver and some Torx Screwdrivers
• Time Machine Extermal Hard Drive with all of my backups
Here are some things I have read that I find to be confusing
• Some suggest I should transfer my data from the old hard drive to new new one BEFORE I install the new one. (I'm not sure how that works.)
• Some suggest upgrading to the latest OS X before transferring any data. (Would that be Mavericks? I haven't upgraded to that yet. Is that necissary?)
• Some suggest that I will need the MacBook Pro's installation disk to make the switch. (I don't know where that disk is. Do I really need it?)
If anyone can clarify any of the above issues that I've listed as confusing, that would be great. Also, if anyone can help me figure out what steps to do first, second, third, etc., that would be great.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro. An aftermarket drive I bought has now thrown up a rather serious bad block error message on my SMART utility app.
I have 2 other dives but am a little sad as now I am down on a 2TB drive. (all work safe).
Is there anything I can do to this drive or is it now a paper weight?

Use WD Lifeguard, best tool for your Black Caviar. After years of using drives and seeing bad or even weak sectors I know that has worked while zero-all with Apple Disk Utility does and did not.
SoftRAID 4 is $139, though, and FWB HD Toolkit or Silverlining when they were $99+ hard drive tools, SoftRAID does monitor in the background for sector failures.
Depends on how many spares and how many used. Most people say dont' use it, WD Black 1TB $139 (same as SoftRAID).
I've heard SMART Utility program is one of the better for scanning media. TTPro 6 has gotten better but while it ujse to at least detect media errors it didn't do anything there and then (in old days needed to know and could use the sector ID to manually attempt to read the data, mark as defective and assign one of the spares).
So if you have Windows or you can burn an ISO of lifeguard.

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

I have monitored the SMART status etc. of my internal drive with smartmontools for some time. Occasionally, I would see an error or a failed self-test but later testing always succeeded and things did not seem to be problematic.
At the beginning of this week, I started to see a lot of failed self-tests (though some still passed), a rising number of bad ("pending") sectors and reallocation attempts (though no reallocated sectors) and various other errors. The computer seemed to have trouble reading from the disk at times and Carbon Copy Cloner reported two I/O errors when cloning (a later clone succeeded). fsck showed errors although running fsck -fy repeatedly seemed to resolve them.
The Apple hardware tests initially reported an error (2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6-Master) but I hadn't realised I should disconnect peripherals before running it so I did that and repeated the test which found no issues. I ran the extended test a total of three times with no errors.
As I continued to have problems, I booted from my clone and had Disk Utility wipe the drive by writing zeros to it. (I thought trying to get it to write everywhere would either finish the drive off or force it to reallocate the bad blocks. As I understand it, in normal use, the drive won't reallocate the blocks unless it can recover the data in the hopes of reading it at a later time.)
I then continued monitoring the disk using smartmontools. At this point, short self-tests succeed but extended self-tests "disappear". They don't fail, they simply vanish. They begin and smartctl shows the test in progress but then no error or result is logged - it is as if the test was never run. The first time I did this, I got an error saying the SMART attributes could not be read but subsequent tests do not trigger even an error. Short self-tests continue to pass.
There are now (according to SMART) zero bad ("pending") sectors but zero reallocated sectors, which seems odd. The raw read error rate fluctuates (zero one minute, many thousands a while later) although I am not sure it did not do this before.
Disk Utility claims the disk does not support SMART status even though smartctl clearly shows it does. Disk Utility claims the volume is "OK".
I ran Tech Tool Deluxe 3.04 from CD and 3.1.1 from my clone. In both cases, I ran all available tests on the drive. No problems were found.
I am seeing some problems even while booted from my clone - yesterday, the system froze completely and I had to force a shut-down by switching off the power (fsck then found a minor error but repaired it). Just before this happened, I was unable to mount a disk image and was trying to rectify the situation when the system froze. It is possible that the errors fsck corrected were implicated in the freeze, rather than caused by it, since Disk Utility found and repaired similar errors for the other two clones I have (on different partitions of my external drive - yes, I know this is sub-optimal).

Self-tests 1-8 were all run after I erased the disk. The others were run before I did so. Not listed are the extended self-tests I've started since erasing which, as I say, have simply disappeared.
The checksum error regarding the log is normal for this disk. At least, I've got that error ever since I started using smartmontools for monitoring so I assume it is normal. (I installed this version of the software in about April 2008 and have used it since.) Also, starting offline testing has never succeeded on this disk (I think I checked into this at the time but can't quite remember - this is not new, anyway).
Questions
how should I interpret all this? (Why does Disk Utility say SMART is not supported while smartctl clearly shows it is at the same time? Why do the extended tests simply vanish? Is the drive definitely dying?) I do not want to replace the disk unless I absolutely have to because I understand that replacing disks in 12" PBs is no small matter and cost is an issue. I do not want to replace the machine unless I have to because cost is an issue and, also, I really like this computer and have no idea what I would want in its place, even if expense were no obstacle.
if it isn't clear whether the drive is dying or not, is there some further strategy I can use to establish this?
if the drive is dying, is a machine of this age worth repairing and, if it is, under what circumstances is it worth doing so? For example, it might be worth doing if you can do the job yourself, but that might be quite impractical for non-expert (not to mention, inexpert) users.
if there is a hardware problem (which I obviously think is very, very probable at this point), is it definitely a dying hard drive? (I've seen people write ominous things about disk controllers etc. which I gather are more serious - or less repairable - than a "mere" dying disk.)
what questions should I be asking you and what are the answers to those questions?!

The 12" PB internals are a bit more complex, for PB's. If you don't want to replace the hard drive yourself or pay someone to install it, you could always get an external firewire hard drive, and use it to boot from and for general usage. Would have to be firewire, since the PB won't book from a USB device. Have you called any Apple Authorized Service Providers to see what they would charge to install a drive for you? Whether you bought it or they supplied it? You can find a local one in the US at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/

Hard Drive scanner/diagnostic tool?

Hey all,
I have a 21" i3 3.06 Ghz iMac. I got it in 2011 and the warranty has expired.
Anyway, I notice that every few months after clean installing Snow Leopard, my hard drive would be come corrupt necessitating a complete reinstall of SL again.
This occurs every few months. The OS is up to date, no malware, no weird software of anything installed. Basically, everytime I boot up, it'd take about 5-10 minutes as it does the gray screen with the spinning wheel with a progress bar at the bottom of the screen.
I have tried repairing permissions and scanning for errors using disk utilities within SL and via my SL install disc. However, I am unable to repair disk because it is corrupted.
Is there any other HDD scanning tools that I can use to see whether or not my hard drive is defective?

I'm probably a little late to this discussion, but thought I'd throw out the information anyway, especially since "Linc Davis" mentioned failing cables.
First, it does sound like your drive is bad, not a cable. The reason I say this is that if it was a cable problem, unless it was really, really severe, it wouldn't always appear when the unit is starting up.

I've had both a bad drive on one unit, and a bad cable on another. The difference is that a drive with bad sectors on it will always fail whenever the sectors are accessed, whereas bad cables, usually with intermittent connections (think of a loose light bulb) will appear whenever and wherever they care to.
I had a system a long time ago with bad sectors in the OS region. When the system started, it would always either lock up and try incessantly to boot up, or it succeeded the boot process would get screwed up because it was reading bad data. In this case I replaced the disk. Scannerz docs say I probably could have reformatted and zeroed the drive to re-map bad sectors, but I didn't know any better at the time, and it also gave me the opportunity to get a bigger drive (this was a long time ago, and I dumped a 10G drive for a 40G drive - laugh now if you want to but 10 years ago that was a big deal!)
We got Scannerz because they have (or had) a video on their site that showed test results on a unit with a failing cable (can't guarntee it's still there - it was months ago and their web site seems to be undergoing constant modification). We were using a much more expensive tool and it was giving us results that I can only call idiotic. On one test the drive came up with problems at locations A, B, C, and D on the drive, on the next test there were no problems, then the problems were at locations P, Q, R, S, T (the letters represent sector locations). It made no sense. Scannerz apparently targets these types of problems and my company's techs were able to isolate it to a crack in the plastic cable connecting the hard drive to the logic board.
Some people claim it's too hard to use, but I don't see how. Look at the comments on it on CNET for example. One guy says you need to be a genius to use it, another almost implies a 5 year old could use it. The tool is testing only. It doesn't claim to do anything it can't.

What's your OS? Acrobat 8 is not compatible with any modern OS.
