N93 RINGTONE ISSUES AND GENERAL SLUGGISH BEHAVIOR!...

I've been battling with my n93 for about 6 months now and recently got all excited about the release of the 20.0.058 firmware update hoping it would solve most of the phone's catalogue of problems.
One of the most annoying problems for me was the fact the ringtone randomly switches back to the generic Nokia ringtone for calls, then back to the one i selected. Its not just for certain callers or anything like that, I called my phone from a landline several times without touching the settings and found the ringtone still switched between the generic Nokia ringtone and the specified one.
Also switching between menu's is still slow (very, very slow at times!!), especially going into the messaging menu or selecting 'show' for missed calls, messages etc. This problem also seems to be just getting worse. When I first got the phone, the delay between switching menu's wasn't a problem, but it certainly is now!!
Both these problems have persisted since I've updated to the 20.0.058 firmware.
If anyone has advice on how to solve these problems, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only person that would be grateful if you shared it with us on this forum.

Well my friend, im in the same boat as you, I was waiting and waiting for this f/w. I had oringal phone back in october, f/w ver 3 or something like that, I went to update it at the shop and it came back f/w 11 etc..
I used my phone for about a week and the autofocus stopped and also the button on the side froze. So again it went back, 3-4 weeks later i was sent a brand new phone. I was pleased as I though great the new f/w on it too.
How wrong was i, it was f/w 10 etc...
So after reading many discusions telling us not to goto the latest f/w because of the b/w video and other faults. I waited. I did not want to waste my time to goto the shop and get it sorted as Nokia's website said there will be an update.
Feb theres an update, but its the same f/w which people were telling others to stay well clear of.
So again my phone,
b/w video
b/w pictures (**bleep**) even in colour there grainy and thats in full light.
the sms function don tget me started..
I send about 10 texts in one go, and it fails after the 1st two have gone out.
I have to then goto the outbox, click on each one and then click resend or send again.
While this is going on, I get a message which says I have a new message, I click on show, and then it freezes the menu, I have to turn off and back on again to get the whole damn phone working again.
The menu's are sluggish, not at all quick like the past f/w version.
The batt well it lasts a day, I bought two and a desktop charger to help matters.
Barcode reader, well full light, waiting for 1min and more for it to produce something is so wrong, whats the point?
Ring tones,
Somedays its like the speakers shot, or fuzzy, while other days its fine.
Flash.
Not really much use unless you got your phone in there face, so whats the point in having a light on it? Is is really there as a torch? rubbish!
Profiles:
I do not know, or cant remember if this was an option here, remember the day where you could have it on silent for a specified time? where has that gone or was it not there?
Oh also, if you do a full backup, and then upgrade online, and then restore, all your songs, videos which have keys, will not work again, even if you still have the orginal keys, they will not re-install. (thanks nokia)
For me thats it after a few days after upgrade. I will post more faults apart from the obvious ones.
Smiler
Like someone else says in previous posts, maybe if Nokia juse admit that there flag ship phone is a muk up and do a recall and give out either n93i, n95 or even the n97. This will cut down on time they have to keep fixing the n93 and then can work on other things.
Well Nokia customer service did ring me, very shocked....
They asked me what if any problems i had and gave me a range of questions to answer rating on 1 to 5, 5 being best.
So far Nokia, you dont even come on the rating... your well below.
I suppose its what you get if you buy something for money these days and not on tick or hp. You save up or even just think you got to gave the next best thing (as the adverts say it is!!) and then it isnt, whats that saying?
All that glisters is not gold?
hmm
anyway

  • Apple support issue and general MacBookPro solidity

    The main question:
Can a backup with Timemachine be used to restore a new HD, which unfortunately is already formatted and has content? The backup was from a 500GB disk, the new disk has 320GB. However, the 500GB disk was not full and was less than 320GB.
    Can anybody help?
A more generic question and some background:
About 3 years ago I purchased my first MacBook Pro to allow me to enter the multi media work area. Two years after the purchase the MacBook encountered a problem with the video chip, which requires the replacement of the motherboard. This happened when I lived in the middle of Africa and at a time when I had to complete a movie project. I went to South Africa to buy a new MacBook Pro last February as this was the "cheapest" option. The new MacBook broke down in July - only 5 months after purchase with a known and well documented issue whereby the computer does not start up, but shows a "permit" sign instead. I have moved from Rwanda to Senegal and found an authorised, licensed Apple store. After 10 long and painful weeks the shop finally was able to confirm the obvious and also to provide me with a temporary replacement disk. They were instructed to only physically install the disk, so that everything else can be done via the time machine. However, they ignored the instructions and provided a disk, that leaves me with mostly corrupted applications and documents. Trying to restore them one by one does not result in success and I am extremely frustrated. Obviously the licensed store does not have the capacity and it seems that the MacBook Pro in general is not as stable as one would wish. Any comments - any advise - any help?

    How much less than 320GB?
Generally speaking you don't want the hard drive to get more than 85% full (an arbitrary number that has worked for most people). Time machine stores its data in folders fairly free hand based on time stored, but a mixed recovery may or may not work depending on how different the types of data are together. What kind of data are you wishing to restore?

AppleCare may be your best remediation in this case. Buying it anytime the machine is under a year old gives you unlimited hardware and software support for Apple's own product, though data restore of non-Apple applications is probably not within that coverage. I can't say for certain about that, although AppleCare is known to do data recovery at a fee.
Their nearest contact number is here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
They would be able to tell you what can and can't be done, and if you aren't satisfied with their response, don't hang up, just get a case number and request Customer Relations look into your issue and tell you what's possible.

  • Seemingly random freezes and general sluggishness.

Since I have updated to Snow Leopard my 20" iMac seems to be having some issues. various applications stall (iTunes, FireFox, iPhoto) or completely freeze seemingly at random. Not enough to prohibit use of the machine but often enough to cause concern. I have run DiskUtility to repair permissions, I have cleared out my cache files using Onyx but these stalls and crashes still seem to persist.
I have posted the log from a single start up below. A few start up errors caught my attention but I admit I really do not completely understand what I am reading.
_*Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self:*_ seems this would be console log related
MenuCracker: There seem to be 3 errors in the log related to MenuCracker I have read that this is installed with some software but I am not sure what. I did have "Connect360.prefPane" and "MediaLink.prefPane" set to show their icons in the menu, but this error still persists after I set them to not do so.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

    -------------------

I finally tracked down where MenuCracker was hiding as an invisible file:
    /Users/calvin/.webex/825/Sharing.app/Contents/Resources/WebexAppshare.menu/Conte nts/Resources/MenuCracker.menu/Contents/MacOS/MenuCracker
The key for me was ".webex/825/Sharing.app" WebEx is a service by Cicso the company I work for uses for web based meetings. (www.webex.com)
I had no luck finding an uninstaller from them so I did a search for invisible files. Amazing how many of those there are!
Sure enough there was the .webex folder with a bunch of stuff they installed, probably about 2 years a go when I first use the service. This included this "Sharing.app" file that must have been loading on start-up and utilizing the MenuCracker hack.
First I moved this to the trash. But because it was invisible this did not show up there and did not set the trash menu to allow emptying. Besides, I thought to myself, I should not just immediately delete it just-in-case. So I made a new visible folder on my desktop and moved it there.
I then restarted and pulled up console to review the start-up log. Sure enough MenuCracker has now been removed:

Time will tell if this solves my random freezes. I will give it some time to see and report back my findings to see if indeed this hack was causing my issues.
Thanks to all for the input as well as the side banter about Snow Leopard. That has gotten very entertaining. I understand people are frustrated with an upgrade that causes them problems but to get that perfect world Apple would only allow us to use Apple sanctioned software so that they could test permeation of software/hardware to be sure these things didn't happen. Do you really want that? This is exactly what people are complaining about with the iPhone and iPad. you can't have it both ways now can you.

  • N70 freezing and ringtone issues

Hey there hope someone can help me please. Ive rang orange customer services and spoke to them about my issues with the nokia n70. The phone brings up the nokia logo on a white screen and stays there for about a minute then goes away leaving the phone back to normal. Next i try to change my ringtone but it keeps defaulting back to the nokia tone. Orange customer services said these are known issues and i should get a software update for my phone via the nokia website. Ive tried looking for an update but cannnot find anything.
Please can someone tell me what i can do.
    Many thanks.
    Mark

    HI Mark!
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
Sorry to hear you are having so many problems with your N70. Unfortunately Orange would be incorrect in advising you to visit the Nokia webpage for a software update, there is a patch available for this phone but this is only to help remedy a problem with ring tones not playing.
Your problem seems to be a bit bigger than this, Orange may be correct in advising you that you need a software update. To get this done you will need to visit a Nokia Service Point, if you follow this link: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,8764,76918,00.html you will be able to find the nearest to you.
Right now it isnt possible to update your phones software from the Internet, it can only be done by one of the engineers .
    Cheers
    Karim

    You don't
You have to create a ringtones.  Google will find several ways to do this.
    I use Garageband.

    You can also use itunes:

  • 10.5.2 - Mail hangs; generally sluggish; messages don't display

Since upgrading to 10.5.2, I'm experiencing various issues with Mail.app:
    • It takes a long time to launch, and often hangs without ever fully launching, requiring a force-quit and relaunch.
    • After launching, there's a general sluggishness throughout the app. The initial "checking for mail" sequence takes forever -- sometimes never completing.
    • Often, items I select take far longer than normal to display; messages I select aren't displayed at all; or mailboxes I select -- mailboxes that say they contain messages -- will display no messages. (This behavior is sometimes accompanied by the spinning beach ball, but not always.)
    • I sometimes have to force-quit and relaunch 3 or 4 times before I can actually use the app.
Users on other forums have reported similar issues. Has anyone discovered a fix for these issues?
Otherwise, Apple, we really need assistance, here. Needless to say, this is severely disruptive to our workflow and everyday lives.

My issue turned out to be for more complex than I realized. In addition to Mail.app's sluggishness, all of my syncing (calendars, contacts, mail, bookmarks, iPhone) had also ground to a halt. In System Preferences>.Mac, I was unable to even select the "Sync" tab. (Doing so "crashed" the System Prefs window and made the processor run hot, which made the fan come on.) So, with Activity Monitor, I traced the problem to the Sync Server.
A search, here in the discussions, led me to several users who had identical symptoms after installing Leopard or a Leopard update -- but no solutions. Finally I went to another Apple-related forum and found a solution. Someone there wrote:
+"trashing the ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/ folder did it... Usually touching that folder brings good karma..."+
It seemed like a radical move, because on my MacBook Pro that folder contained over 500 megs of data (although I now suspect it was abnormally bloated). But I had everything backed up, so here's what I did:
    1. I moved the folder, referenced above, to my desktop. (Note that "~" indicates your home folder.)
    2. Restarted my macine.
    3. Opened the .Mac preference pane, then clicked "Sync"
(Note: Previously, clicking "Sync" had been causing the Prefs window, so just being able to bring up that window was a huge victory.)
    4. Clicked the "Advanced" button, selected the MacBook Pro, then clicked "Reset Sync Data" and made sure that I was replacing data on .Mac with the data from the computer (which I knew was good data). In other words, I made sure that the animated arrow was moving away from the computer and toward .Mac, indicating the direction of the data transfer.
(The folder I deleted in step 1 contained a lot of sync data. So without step #4, I was concerned that .Mac -- with its data having been deleted -- might have interpreted that as a signal to delete the data on the Mac. So I performed step #4 to make sure that didn't happen.)
    5. Then I clicked "Sync now."
This was the first time I'd gotten sync to work for at least 36 hours. Also, after the sync was completed, the new "Local" folder, which replaced the one I deleted, only had 62 megs of data. Hence, my suspicion that the deleted folder was abnormally bloated.
So far so good.... I've got sync, and Mail is launching much more quickly now. Fingers crossed, but everything seems to be working well.

  • In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity

[The title of this forum is "Labview Ideas". Although this is NOT a direct suggestion for a change or addition to Labview, it seems appropriate to me to post it in this forum.]
In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity
I'd like to see NI actually start a round-table discussion about VI references, Data Value references, local variables, compiler optimizations, etc. I'm a C programmer; I'm used to pointers. They are simple, functional, and well defined. If you know the data type of an object and have a pointer to it, you have the object. I am used to compilers that optimize without the user having to go to weird lengths to arrange it.
The 'reference' you get when you right click and "Create Reference" on a control or indicator seems to be merely a shorthand read/write version of the Value property that can't be wired into a flow-of-control (like the error wire) and so causes synchronization issues and race conditions. I try not to use local variables.
I use references a lot like C pointers; I pass items to SubVIs using references. But the use of references (as compared to C pointers) is really limited, and the implementation is insconsistent, not factorial in capabilites, and buggy. For instance, why can you pass an array by reference and NOT be able to determine the size of the array EXCEPT by dereferencing it and using the "Size Array" VI? I can even get references for all array elements; but I don't know how many there are...! Since arrays are represented internally in Labview as handles, and consist of basically a C-style pointer to the data, and array sizing information, why is the array handle opaque? Why doesn't the reference include operators to look at the referenced handle without instantiating a copy of the array? Why isn't there a "Size Array From Reference" VI in the library that doesn't instantiate a copy of the array locally, but just looks at the array handle?
Data Value references seem to have been invented solely for the "In-Place Element Structure". Having to write the code to obtain the Data Value Reference before using the In-Place Element Structure simply points out how different a Labview reference is from a C pointer. The Labview help page for Data Value References simply says "Creates a reference to data that you can use to transfer and access the data in a serialized way.".  I've had programmers ask me if this means that the data must be accessed sequentially (serially)...!!!  What exactly does that mean? For those of use who can read between the lines, it means that Labview obtains a semaphore protecting the data references so that only one thread can modify it at a time. Is that the only reason for Data Value References? To provide something that implements the semaphore???
The In-Place Element Structure talks about minimizing copying of data and compiler optimization. Those kind of optimizations are built in to the compiler in virtually every other language... with no special 'construct' needing to be placed around the code to identify that it can be performed without a local copy. Are you telling me that the Labview compiler is so stupid that it can't identify certain code threads as needing to be single-threaded when optimizing? That the USER has to wrap the code in semaphores before the compiler can figure out it should optimize??? That the compiler cannot implement single threading of parts of the user's code to improve execution efficiency?
Instead of depending on the user base to send in suggestions one-at-a-time it would be nice if NI would actually host discussions aimed at coming up with a coherent and comprehensive way to handle pointers/references/optimization etc. One of the reasons Labview is so scattered is because individual ideas are evaluated and included without any group discussion about the total environment. How about a MODERATED group, available by invitation only (based on NI interactions with users in person, via support, and on the web) to try and get discussions about Labview evolution going?
Based solely on the number of Labview bugs I've encountered and reported, I'd guess this has never been done, with the user community, or within NI itself.....

Here are some articles that can help provide some insights into LabVIEW programming and the LabVIEW compiler. They are both interesting and recommended reading for all intermediate-to-advanced LabVIEW programmers.
NI LabVIEW Compiler: Under the Hood
    VI Memory Usage
The second article is a little out-of-date, as it doesn't discuss some of the newer technologies available such as the In-Place Element Structure you were referring to. However, many of the general concepts still apply. Some general notes from your post:
    1. I think part of your confusion is that you are trying to use control references and local variables like you would use variables in a C program. This is not a good analogy. Control references are references to user interface controls, and should almost always be used to control the behavior and appearance of those controls, not to store or transmit data like a pointer. LabVIEW is a dataflow language. Data is intended to be stored or transmitted through wires in most cases, not in references. It is admittedly difficult to make this transition for some text-based programmers. Programming efficiently in LabVIEW sometimes requires a different mindset.
    2. The LabVIEW compiler, while by no means perfect, is a complicated, feature-rich set of machinery that includes a large and growing set of optimizations. Many of these are described in the first link I posted. This includes optimizations you'd find in many programming environments, such as dead code elimination, inlining, and constant folding. One optimization in particular is called inplaceness, which is where LabVIEW determines when buffers can be reused. Contrary to your statement, the In-Place Element Structure is not always required for this optimization to take place. There are many circumstances (dating back years before the IPE structure) where LabVIEW can determine inplaceness and reuse buffers. The IPE structure simply helps users enforce inplaceness in some situations where it's not clear enough on the diagram for the LabVIEW compiler to make that determination.
The more you learn about programming in LabVIEW, the more you realize that inplaceness itself is the closest analogy to pointers in C, not control references or data references or other such things. Those features have their place, but core, fundamental LabVIEW programming does not require them.

    Question
How do I find my tab history? I had hard drive issues and when I launched my browser after getting it back their was no "restore session" option. I know a tab history is kept, just don't remember where or how to exercise it. Thanks

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" if you want to restore multiple windows.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
    Another possibility is to use:

  • Variance between Material Ledger and General Ledger of

There is again a variance between Material Ledger and General Ledger of
7.026,64 (Tcode MB5L) as it was already in $$100036500(G/L).
The strange thing is, that there is only a difference in the GL Account
Balance report (FS10N) for S240077000(G/L ). In the Line Item report (FBL3N)
all documents are available. This issue impacts at least the Balance
carry forward negativ at the year end, because the system will forward
the the amount of the balance for S240077000, which is now 7.026,64 to
    less.
    Ther first investigations results:
    - all Material- and FI documents are available.
    - the variances in June refer to FI-documnets 4900015286 and 4900015293.
    - the documents, e.g. 4900015292 and 4900015287, are correct and was
posted at the same day by the same user and with the same transaction
    MI07.
    - there are no differences for the posted materials identificable from
    the other materials

    Material Ledger/Actual costing  MLAC
MLAC is used where the FG cost varies every month due to external procurement variation.
    Ex: Jan 2011
FG cost of manufcature internally = 100
FG cost of procurement externally = 120 ( Company procures due to capacity constraint)
FG Standard price at the end of month = 110...This is standard price of FG
Due to heavy fluctuations in the month of February 2011 in procurement...
    Ex: Feb 2011
FG cost of manufcature internally = 140
FG cost of procurement externally = 460 ( Company procures due to capacity constraint)
FG Standard price at the end of month = 300...This is standard price of FG.
The variance is very high in Feb 2011 and company want to absorb this variance in Feb 2011 iteslef hence they will use MLAC.
So if the variance is within reasonable limits company usually do not follow MLAC.
Where as if the variance is very high company usually follow MLAC.
In Pharma Industry usually the variance is very high on month to month basis hence they follow MLAC.
Where as in Industrial Mahcineery Manufacturing Company the variance is with in reasonable limits hence they do not follow MLAC. Ofcourse they can use MLAC as well.

  • Problem in Accounting entry - Goverment securiites (ISSUER and COUNTERPARTY

    Hi Expert,
I am facing a problem in investment module, Require your help to understand/ resolve one problem.
We have purchase one central government security from my counterparty for ex. - ABC & Company.(code - 10000)
I have created security id and maintained Issuer as Central government (for ex. - 11000).
Because it is issued by central government.
When i am going to record this transaction in TS01 then i have choose business partner - 10000 as my counterparty because i have purchase from him. Now i will get the Interest from my ISSUER ( central government - 11000). How can we mapped the ISSUER for MY interest income Posting.
It is available in SAP but i am not able to figure out from where I should get this logic.
It is a general practice ISSUER and counterparty will be different for a deal then how can we manage our flow from ISSUER.
    Please help
    Regards
    Gaurav Gupta

    Hi,
In the BP Masterdata/Counterparty role/comanycode tab/Standing instruction for payment details tab... you have a field  "Payer/ee" you can use this field to map a different business partner for settling payment transactions.
Alternatively.... On the Transaction... Payment details tab.. when you choose to make payment via customer... you get this field for paying/receiving through alternate business partner...
You may create different payment details for each flow (If you want to receive only interest from the issuer and not others) to pay / receive differently.
for e.g. To make interest receips from Issuer only (Issuer should also be maintained in the role counter pary) and all other payments via the actual counterparty.
    Hope this helps.

  • Start Up issues and RSD

I've been having fun with my new toy, and as a new user of Mac I have generally been impressed, but this issue is really bugging me. I bought a reconditioned/refurbished MacBook a fortnight ago, and on the second or third day started having problems with start up and freezing. The display gets to the page with Finder in the top bar, but the mouse freezes and nothing seems to unfreeze it including the forced quit. I end up powering off and on again, and the issue may recur another 5-6 times before becoming stable. I have rung the local AppleStore for technical assistance, which involved using the disk utility, verifying permissions etc. That hasn't worked. If I try and connect to the internet after finally getting logged on, part way through the dial up procedure the laptop freezes and again the forced quit doesn't work. I also have an issue that when clicking on a link within Safari eg the User tips library on this site I experience RSD and have to go through the whole rigmarole again of getting the laptop up and running and connected to the internet. i do not have the option of wireless, broadband etc - only dial up. thanks for any insights.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have had some other issues with disk errors which the repairers determined to be software induced, and charged me accordingly to fix - I find it a little difficult to accept that a product which I had had less than three weeks, and to which I hadn't added/deleted any applications etc could suddenly have a software problem and wouldn't be covered under the warranty. The repairer did not address the RSD/startup/sleep problem, stating that it wasn't there and that the software issue should have resolved it. It did the same thing at the front reception, so they kept my little book and replaced the logic board. in the week that I have had it back I haven't had any startup issues and only 3 RSD - generally whilst connected to the internet (dial up). I think I can consider the problem resolved!

  • Hmph. (Jumpy) Touchpad issues and Suspend idiosyncrasies.

(I'll try not to turn this into a novel, but I guess when I have a problem it just happens that I naturally try to describe everything that goes on for full disclosure.  Bear with me.)
I just got a hold of an older laptop, a Dell Latitude C640, and to my dismay setting up Linux on it hasn't been the walk in the park I'd hoped it'd be.  I read a bunch of articles about Linux on this machine before I got it and most seemed to have a pretty easy time of everything.  Of course this might be because the laptop is quite a few years old and older Linux kernels acted different ways, but I guess I assumed that things would be even easier using a modern distro.
    The Touchpad
It worked fine on the install of Windows XP that came installed on it, with no problems at all.  Before installing any flavor of Linux I ran Knoppix on it just kind of to make sure things would go OK.  It was a little dated, being Knoppix 5.10, but I figured it'd do for my purposes.
The first time I booted it seemed to work OK, with the mouse cursor behaving mostly as it should, with a little lag.  I've used this same Knoppix disk on another laptop and it did much the same thing.  After another boot, however, I saw that things weren't going to be so easy.  The cursor immediately drifted off into one of the screen's corners (it didn't seem to care much which one it was in, as long as it was in one) and would refuse to come out.  I could move the cursor a little ways off of the edge of the screen, but not far enough to click anything, and it would immediately go back as soon as I released my finger.  So I tried a few other disks.  First I tried a CD I have for Crunchbang Linux (just a minimalist, Openbox-based Ubuntu flavor), and then Knoppix 4.  Both gave very similar results.  Crunchbang let me have a little bit more control over the cursor for a little while after booting, maybe for about a minute, and then the same behavior cropped up.  I only booted with Knoppix 4 once, but it was pretty much the same deal.
I started reading up on what might be going on and came across a thread on the Linux Mint forums that seemed to be describing an issue very close to mine (though mine is completely unrelated to the AC adapter and persists whether it's plugged in or not).  Someone in the thread suggested it was a kernel issue, since it's definitely not a hardware issue, so I then booted into a copy of DSL I had lying around, which uses the 2.4 kernel.  Sure enough everything worked without problems.  This caused me to believe, going by some of the conclusions from the Lnux Mint thread and apparently mistakenly, that the issue may have been with the 2.6 Debian kernels, so I figured I'd just get Arch installed and see how things went.
After getting X set up and working properly I saw that the issue was going to be much the same.  To get around the cursor being dragged into the corner against my will I found out that if I ran without HAL or that if I disabled hot-plugging I could use the touchpad, although not flawlessly.  Here's xorg.conf:

The "AutoAddDevice" option is the only thing that seems to make any difference in usability at all; without it I can't use the touchpad at all, and with it I can, but to varying degrees.  I've found that right after I boot up everything seems to work exactly how it's supposed to, but shortly after, sometimes 15 seconds, sometimes many minutes, things seem to get kind of unresponsive.  The cursor will go where I want it to go, but it jumps around and does it very slowly.  The mouse buttons also get very unresponsive.  Right click is especially bad, and I often have to hold down the button just to get it to do what I want, but left click is very bad too, requiring me to push the button down for almost a full second, sometimes several times.  Taps on the pad, after things go wrong, also stop being recognized, forcing me to use the buttons (which I'm OK with).  It's usable, but the behavior is not ideal whatsoever—it's rather annoying.
The most aggravating thing, I think, is that I can't seem to find anyone else using this same model that has this issue.  The latest I've seen is from January: An Ubuntu (8.10) user reports no issues and is very pleased (see comments at the bottom of the page).
Suspend (both to disk and RAM)
I actually did install the latest Crunchbang (9.04.01, the 32-bit "Lite" edition) first to see if anything would clear up by installing it rather than running the live CD, but I only had it installed for a few hours.  I didn't really get into messing with xorg.conf that much yet, only really touching "FingerLow" and "FingerHigh" settings, so the touchpad issue was still nagging me.  I did play around a bit though and found out that suspend to RAM and suspend to disk worked pretty much from the go, only requiring that I installed uswsusp.  Issuing a simple "sudo pm-suspend" or "sudo pm-hiberate" put the computer to sleep and it woke back up without any issue at all.
But suspend on Arch is proving to be a pain in the neck.  Suspend to RAM simply will not work; the computer shuts down but will not resume, leaving me only a blank screen with an unresponsive keyboard.  Suspend to disk works (using hibernate-script as pm-hibernate doesn't seem to do anything at all), but it works very poorly; both suspending and resuming take a very, very long time—so long, in fact, that I'm just better off shutting down and restarting normally, since the boot time is better.  I don't know what accounts for the drastic difference in distros, and this isn't the first experience I've had with suspension working on Ubuntu but not on Arch.  What is different in the Ubuntu implementation of pm-utils than the Arch way?  Is it the Ubuntu kernel?  Is there any way to implement the Ubuntu way with Arch (because, after all, I'd prefer to use Arch)?
I'm considering installing Crunchbang once again if I can't get things to work the way I want them to in the next few days on Arch.  And, if I can't make the touchpad work in a satisfactory manner on Cruchbang, I might just have to reinstall Windows.  I don't want to do that.

At least for the moment I've given up and reinstalled Windows XP, but I'm still kind of looking for solutions.  Suspend and hibernate are things I find to be somewhat important, but secondary to the touchpad issues, so I'm focusing on those.
Out of curiosity today I test out pretty much every live CD I have in the house.  I found an old Ubuntu CD for 6.06 (Dapper) and had a little bit of luck with it.  By default pretty much every live CD configures Xorg to use an additional mouse that isn't present; to fix this I edited the "ServerLayout" section xorg.conf to only use the touchpad.  With this old Ubuntu CD, this achieved the desired result (mostly).  The touchpad worked how it ought to with no lag, but a few features were not implemented.
Ubuntu 6.06 used the 0.4.3 version of the synaptics driver; newer Linux distros usually use 0.99 and above.  I tried my Knoppix 5.1 CD again, editing xorg.conf again to reflect the absence of an external mouse, but I did not get the behavior I was hoping for.  When I checked I found out that Knoppix 5.1 came with the 0.14.6 version of the synaptics driver.
Turns out that 0.14.5 was something of a turning point for the driver.
Makefile support for Xorg 7.0 has been added.
Two-finger scrolling and pressure dependent motion
speed have been implemented. A new parameter has
been added to give greater control over tap
    behavior.
I suspect that the problem is coming from the addition of the "pressure dependent motion speed."  I don't know what options control this to toy with them.
However, I'm not so sure.  This sounds like it would be something that would toy with my mind, making me think I'm experiencing "mouse lag" when certain options are really just conflicting, but as I had to point out again on another forum on which I posted this same thread, when using Arch (and the most recent synaptics driver) things started out fine and only after a little while, sometimes less than a minute, sometimes many, would things start to act up.  Either some progress is being made to resolve this problem with the latest releases, or something is going wrong internally that I do not understand.  I just cannot understand why, with the newest drivers, it's only after some use that the problem kicks in while when using all others the problems are immediate.
